@@Lophophorawilliamsii I say it is a good quality paper. But keep in mind, it has a grainy texture. This allows for adding multiple layers. It won’t give you a smooth result right away
This is great!! You’re a great artist. Could you share more about Toned drawing paper, please?I have no idea of what the benefits/drawbacks of using grey vs tan color paper.
@@tbuva02 hi, I’m confused because I thought I replied to this but maybe I didn’t. First off thank you💜 and I haven’t used grey paper yet however for charcoal it would be great because there is black and white charcoal, so you could create highlights and shadows while the grey paper acts as a good midtone. Other toned paper like tan/cream/neutral browns often looks good with a colored portrait of a person or animal :)
@@AlexisCassandraArt as for "solvent" for blending with graphite & colored pencils I use baby oil..pleasing fragrance & no petroleum based. Also a water solvency tends to wrinkle or buckle paper. Paolo

The Legion paper that you draw the Frankestein, was the best paper and the one I would choose for what you draw, mediums you use etc. Another brand that I like is Daler Rowney. I didn't expect that I would like their heavyweight papers, more than Canson drawing papers but I did!! I like both the smooth and the fine grain. Great papers for Polychromos! Their sizing is way better than Canson, means they don't smudge as easy, as also the paper takes panishment without any sign of damage. Charcoal worked fine on the Fine grain.
This is so indepth.. There are so many papers on the market and its often hard to choose.. i tend to use a lot of hot press but some of the brands are just way out of my budget price range. I am still on the hunt for the best possible paper, without having to break the budget.. Great review and I can see you have experiemented fairly extensively.. thank you for that. You did a great video on the various papers and your artistry is soooo accomplished! Thanks so much. I did have a question. I've been using Strathmore "Sketch" 9 x 12 and it seems to be ok for my purposes. I'm a beginner trying to learn how to do portraits and they've just been graphite so far with slight bits of colored pencil. but I wanted to do abstract expressionism in something bigger so I bought a type of paper called Newsprint that is 12 x 18 and I was wondering if you thought this was suitable for a finished drawing? I was just buying this "Newsprint" (only 37 lb) because it was cheaper, but my first abstract drawing (in pencil and charcoal) impressed myself and some friends so much it made me wonder if the type of paper it was suitable for a finished drawing. I since purchased some 60 lb 12 x 18 paper that is white. The Newsprint paper is off-white, which perhaps could help some drawings in the manner you pointed out when you talked about toned paper.
Thank you for watching!! Sketch paper and newsprint can be quite thin. If you find the paper crinkling or unable to take layers, it means you should upgrade to a thicker one. If the 60 lb paper works for you that is great. I find that I have a heavier hand and therefore use a lot of mixed media paper, Bristol paper or hot pressed watercolor paper because they are thicker. One thing to watch out for is texture. If you want a smoother surface, some Bristol and mixed media paper will be too “toothy” for you and it’ll be harder to fill in white space completely. If you store your artwork in a portfolio, you won’t have to worry about your artwork on thinner paper being damaged over time!
Thanks for this info. I appreciate you sharing this. I work in acrylic inks, acrylic and oil, so this is very informative for me. I subscribed to you. Will pop in regularly.
Informative video. You do amazing art. Love those portraits of Kylo Ren, Thor and Starlord. Love the 300 Series Strathmore smooth Bristol...it's my go-to for mostly comic book art (Pencil and pen/ink, with either colored pencils or markers). Thanks for posting. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you for the support:) I'm very glad you enjoy some of my fan art, I haven't been as inspired to create it lately with movie theaters being closed and releases being delayed. I agree, Bristol Smooth works especially well with fineliners and markers!
Heres what i would recommend as of lately: colored pencils- hot pressed watercolor or bristol vellum 500 series drawing paper pens or marker-smooth paper, like bristol smooth or cardstock charcoal pencils- a thicker drawing paper or thinner mixed media paper (doesn't need to be too thick or textured) graphite pencils- medium drawing paper works okay. sketch paper might be too thin for shading

Hi, I tend to use the mixed media paper with charcoal because it usually has texture the charcoal can stick to. Bristol vellum surface probably works fine too!
There’s no straight answer so sorry for the essay😂 IMO Bristol smooth/plate surface or a hot pressed watercolor paper like Arches work best to get a smooth result with graphite. Bristol smooth is great because the pencils glide onto the paper beautifully, the downside is you can’t layer a lot because the paper is too smooth to hold on to many layers of graphite. But you can get a smooth and dark look right away with minimal blending. This paper also works well for pen or ink, but not charcoal or carbon. Another option is Arches hot pressed watercolor(or other 100% cotton hot pressed wc papers), this ones a good option if you love layering a lot and if you sometimes incorporate charcoal/carbon into your graphite work. It has a little more tooth to it and the surface isn’t slippery like Bristol smooth(so you have to work a little more to blend), but it’s not super grainy like a mixed media paper would be, it’s still smooth to the touch. I prefer the latter since I like to use charcoal along with my graphite, but if you’re after ultra smooth I’d maybe start out with Bristol smooth because you can get a small cheaper pad of it to try out first (like strathmore 300 series) and hot pressed watercolor paper is much pricier
I tried doing a drawing on Pogahontas.. the hair became good, but the tons of erasings the paper was exposed to, broke the surface of the Canson Bristol Smooth paper, I tried to do the drawing on, so lots of more colour was shown, and it was harder even with lightest possible pressure, far too much pigment visible on the paper
Hair and portraits in general are not easy! Smooth surface paper doesn't give much leeway either. Once the paper is "burnished", it can be very difficult to add any additional layers!
@@AlexisCassandraArt I was trying back then to make the drawing with coloured leads, closest to the one in the area, like the Disney company do themselves for their art, so the lines aren't as clear. charcoal pencils- a thicker drawing paper or thinner mixed media paper (doesn't need to be too thick or textured)
