The Rest Is History makes me SO happy! I bought Rubicon years ago and loved it so I knew who Tom was but if you read a lot of history you kind of assume all historians are kind of academic and stodgy and all the same. Dominic and Tom crack me up and they talk about history like how my friends and I might. Can't get enough of this podcast - keep it up guys!
I have become completely addicted to this channel. The only thing I would ask is for you to add in your comments a list of the authors and books that you talk about. For instance the one by ???Helen Caster???? I will order that one as soon as I can find it. Thanks !!
If you join the TRIH club you get a weekly email which includes a book list. Thanks to which I can tell you it's The Eagle and the Hart by Helen Castor.
This is, by some distance, my favorite podcast. I was thrilled to find it on UA-cam, and yet I didn't enjoy watching it. This is to say nothing unpleasant about you as performers or people, but the density of information; changing alliances, 80 people named Henry and Edward, family trees, and a dozen other noble families and that's before including France! It's much easier when I'm only using one sense to process it all rather than two. But that's just one man's opinion, I'll follow just as loyally, but only by podcast.
There a nice bit to mention is John of Gaunt. Father of Henry IV but grandfather of the brilliant generation as known in Portugal. Their mother was Philippa of Lancaster, Queen of Portugal. It seems that John educated well his children as they shone in their times. The most significant grandchild is Henry the Navigator who organised and programmed the discoveries. A bit like going to Mars in Medieval times.
Technically, the Portuguese royal family were the most legitimate heirs to the Lancastrian claim to the throne after Henry VI’s death rather than the Tudors but they never asserted it.
Rixhard II and Henry IV are basically Harvey Dent quote: "You die a hero or live long long enough to see yourself become the villain". While he was alive, King Dick the Second was seen as a tyrant but as soon as he died, suddenly gets a cult of personality and praised as a saint, with Henry IV becoming tyrant and regicide.
What got me was that he had himself buried alongside his uncle the Black Prince in Canterbury even though he usurped and subsequently murdered the princes son
Your series on the Pelasgians is amazing. It is unique on UA-cam because you are the only one putting the pieces of the puzzle together and making connections. The only thing I would disagree on is the digamma F. Digamma simply means a double gamma γγ which would be pronounced as a g in English. The description given of the Pelasgian is a gamma with a triangle on top.
the comments in this comment thread applying modern opinions to ancient history are quite hilarious. a few folks even seem to be irked about it😂. jee golly folks its a history podcast about England, done by English historians?
Shakespeare was an Albaphobe. Not content with maligning MacBeth and Lady MacBeth, he also accuses the Scots of interfering in in England. That's rich as England has spent most of its history interfering in just about every country in Europe's politics.
Henry Bolingbroke's take over is no less important than Henry (7th) Tudor's defeat of Richard 3rd. The legitimaticy of a King is based in n his ability to take and hang on to the throne. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.
On Glyndwr having supernatural powers angle : where I come from in Wales there are tales of a supernatural trickster (who often defeats the devil) whose name is Jack O’Kent. Anyway , there is a suggestion that maybe this is/was/could be a memory of Glyndwr in hiding after the revolt.
I am very fond of the tv show "the hollow crown" which has got a top notch acting and very good editing. But of course I am not a historian. What do you guys think of their screen adaptation of Shakespeare ?
King Charles is by far the most underrated, he essentially created modern British politics and how we view ourselves as a country - or at least contributed to it more than a lot of kings
That's a bit like saying King John is underrated because we got Magna Carter. If you screw up so epically you plunge the country into civil war and something comes out of that it isn't exactly an achievement.
@@xplorer841 the fact it didn’t happen in battle it was in the next village over (where the local council bull dosed to build a bypass) and if the Normans landed in pevensey as suggested they’d of had to force march about 30 miles in a day over serious terrain to sack the settlement of Hastings in the same morning - impossible unless you’re a Zulu lol
I think blaming Richard's exile of Henry on jealousy without mentioning that Henry was part of a conspiracy is misleading. The other conspirators were executed but Richard spared Henry because they were cousins.
Henry represents a return of authority by consent to Britain. Remember that the Anglo-Saxon kings were chosen by the witan and the will of the public played a much greater role in English society than under the Normans and Plantagenets even with Magna Carta.
Great stuff! Never knew about this part of English history. My curiosity was raised given I visited Alnwick recently. You are doing great service given how poorly the English education system teaches history. I am not surprised by Shakespeare given he lived during Elizabeth 1st and James 6th and 1st. I would suggest you give a view from the Welsh and scot side once you done with the main theme. It will give a good 360 view. I guess you wil be trotting off to talk about Prince Hal as Henry V. Take your time. The war with the Percy is something I was not aware until recently.

Richard 2 - England's biggest dumb ass of king after Æthelred ? Even John only ended up signing a Carta. It seems so avoidable.
Plus John had a legitimate son/heir along with Will Marshall to serve as his son's regent. King Dick the second just did not care.
