  • LEARN MY WORKFLOW FOR EDITING VOICE AND AUDIO IN ADOBE AUDITION! | In this Adobe Audition tutorial, we’ll take a look at creating a preset that will take your audio, strip out background noise, and compress and normalize your audio levels to a great volume level for use online for any audio, film, or video project.

    In this Adobe Audition tutorial, I’ll go over my basic audio process using Adobe Audition to reduce background noise, normalize the levels to boost up the audio level, compress the peaks to help even things out, tweak and reduce background noise a little more, use the equalizer to give the audio some spice, boost the audio level again by normalizing, and then a series of things to limit the audio and compress peaks to get everything where we want it to be and make sure we’re not blowing out the speakers of the people listening to our audio. I hope you enjoy the tutorial!

    This video by itself propelled me into being able to use Audition really, really effectively. After watching I spent hours with various samples (Using this as a baseline) while experimenting with different settings and effects. The ones I couldn't figure out, or didn't understand their purpose, I researched. Getting started in the audio space can be incredibly daunting, I had watched other videos and attempted to do the research on my own but there were a lot of cases where people simple started by more or less jumping into the deep end and using terminology that people new to it, simply don't understand. Can't thank you enough for putting this together with that in mind - I can effectively tune my audio to produce the exact results I want, remove sounds I don't want, clean it up, EQ it effectively ( Whether that's simply adding Roll-off's or Passes or adding punch into the low-end of a voice, etc.) and more or less do whatever I see fit with any audio file I'm given/record.
    Just wanted to say I appreciate it. Thank you.

    Your narration skills are great, but I really question your EQ settings. I think your After is not really better than the before. I'd cut some of that low end and instead of a mid dip I'd play with a slight BOOST somewhere between 1K and 2K depending on your voice, for you probably down closer to 1K.

    • @tutvid
      @tutvid  6 років тому +72

      Thanks, Michael! You might be right about that. The lows are kicking a bit, probably too much. I love comments like this, we now know the tools and your input will be helpful in addition to what anybody can watch in the video. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, man! 🍻

    • @fogpeople
      @fogpeople 6 років тому +11

      No prob. I think when you find that mid-freq boost point you'll find you won't need to apply the normalization process so much. I think the multi-pass noise reduction is a pretty good idea too, but you could probably apply more than 10dB reduction on the first pass, especially if you hug the noiseprint a little more.

    Wow this was really helpful! I used to use a simple headset and Audacity for recording audio. I recently invested in a nice condenser microphone and started searching for tips on improving my recording quality. I have the full Adobe Suite package but never used Audition until I ran across this video. And wow I don't know why I haven't played around with this program sooner. 😆The difference in sound quality is night and day!

    Thanks. Maybe I'm going crazy, but it almost sounds like this is meant to make your voice sound deeper, crisper and while I appreciate that it may make my voice have some depth, I don't speak that deeply. lol It makes male voices sound more intense and I think it kind of makes mine not sound like me. Playing with the EQ part really helped though.

    Mine keeps evolving, but currently, its:
    1) Increase volume by 4-6db (because I found cleanup plugins like louder sound)
    2) noise reduction. (Waves)
    3) De-Ssseer (sibilance)
    4) second noise reduction (CLEAR)
    5) decrease volume by 2-3db
    6) EQ
    7) Compress at -20 Thresh, 2.5:1 ratio, 3db knee, 0 attk, 40 releas
    8) Volume adjust
    9) limiter to -3
    Everything is really small adjustments, so I preserve as much of the original sound, but get rid of things I don't want. Unfortunately, I have to manually de-Click with the Spectral editor, because i haven't found a good one that doesn't make the sound a bit synthetic.
    Mouth clicks are my bane, currently.
    I will give your chain a try. Always willing to try something new. :)

      99.9% of the time, it is the monitoring gear that fails to deliver the true and flat profile of the capture that leads the listener to failure in analyzing recognizing the true sound image. In short, replace your studio monitors or studio earphones for a better set. A good start is the Audio-Technica M-50x studio monitors.

    • @chrissnyder4439
      @chrissnyder4439 6 років тому +21

      So the fact that his audio typically sounds better, but just this one example sounds terrible, it's a failure of our equipment? No, try again. On a side note, I am listening to this through my M-50x's and everything else sounds just fine.

What I believe can skyrocket you is if maybe you show an example (befoe and after) of what we will be working on first and then continue with your lecture. Hi!
    This is a great tutorial. I'm expanding into Audition from Audacity now, and this has shown me some pretty nice tricks as well as made the Audition UI a lot less intimidating!
    Quick question - at the end of the video, after you've applied all your base editing, you discuss using a limiter if you've got some excessive peaks, saying a few times that you should do this first (which I have often found to be helpful); but, in actual fact, you're applying that limiter after all the processing has been done.
    Do I understand correctly that that was just to demonstrate how to actually apply a limiter, and that the best practice is still to perform this prior to any normalization, EQ, or compression?

    Hi, I got here to learn something but instead I saw how NOT to edit vocal :) Your voice after your editing sounds worse than before. And despite great mic you should invest in pop filter, because it can make your voice immediately much better without any editing :) It's very hard to call professional a voice with plenty of pops and hufs that are impossible to get rid of in editing. That made me stop watching you after maybe 30 seconds. So maybe you should change the title to just "Audition CC tutorial" :)

      It happened with me too. It may be related with your Sample Rate, Bit Depth and other audio settings. Try to record favorite and remember what settings did you use. I use "44100 hz, Mono, 32"

      Try and take the noise print out of the favorite sequence and do it manually for each clip. I found that works best for me.

      Fav not working for another file. Even after taking a separate voice print.

    Thanks for this! One question - does the preset favorite then include the sampling of the background audio? Or do I need to sample the noise print myself BEFORE I run the process? Ideally I'd have a first step in the favorite where it takes a sample from the first three seconds of the clip but I'm not sure if that's possible.

    Thank you so so much for your tutorial! Would you change anything in your workflow if you would master your audio for an audiobook and for a female voice?

    Great tutorial man! Thanks. I really wanted that overcompressed 80's CD loudness wars sound and I think I found it. I ended up with this favorite for my voiceovers:
    Amplitude and Compression->Single-band Compressor (-12dB?, 16x, 5ms, 50ms, 0dB)
    Filter and EQ->Parametric Equalizer->Loudness Maximizer-> 6dB@100Hz, 6dB@6000Hz
    Amplitude and Compression->Hard Limiter->Limit to -3dB
    Reverb->Reverb (700,10,1812,50) 95/5 dry/wet
    Amplitude and Compression->Normalize (-3dB)

    I like the tutorial; however, I think that a pop filter is important here, and not having one is a detriment.
