How to convert a cot tent to a roof top tent in 2021

  • Good day to you! Today on the show I am attaching a cot tent to the top of my truck topper. I live out of my Toyota Tacoma full time. I have been wanting a rooftop tent but they are way too expensive. So I used a cot tent that I have had for about 3 years. It's a Cabelas cot tent. It is really a great tent. It folds out quickly and it is monsoon proof. It actually fits perfectly on top of my aluminum topper. It also holds my weight plus the tent just fine.

Let me know what kind of rooftop tent you are considering for your new home on wheels

We call that cot here in Australia as a SWAG..... we aussies used the swag in a lot of our campings, but since the evolution of the rooftop tent, we have started to deviate from the swag and started installing rooftop tents in our wagons and pick up trucks. I had thought of the same idea before, because buying a swag is cheaper than buying a rooftop tent. Great idea mate !+ Cheers for sharing your video !

That’s awesome! Yes these roof top tents are really expensive. There is no way to test them out either. This has been a great option for me and really cheap. I have seen a lot of people using the cots more and more. Thank you for watching I appreciate. I am glad I could share. Cheers

Without the outside legs touching the ground it would be the fabric and the clips on the top bars supporting all the weight on the ends. With the majority of the weight in the middle it will initially work but not sure if it will hold up long term.

Not a bad idea. Ordered my topper 3 weeks ago and am looking for a topper tent or alternative for AR and bike park trips this summer. Your cot idea has given me some ideas. Thanks man.

That’s great, There is a lot of great RTT’s out there. This worked out far better than I thought it would. I am glad this has sparked some interest for some people looking for an alternative.

I’d use a telescopic ladder. Less to store. I sleep in the topper. Always ready and dry but was thinking about something like that …..but it’ll take away the roof where I put kayaks. I have a slide bed so everything can be stored and accessed easily. The bed is above the slide bed. I also keep stuff in totes in the cab. That being said your video is very good and very very funny!!!! Thanks for making me laugh!

That’s awesome David! I need a telescopic ladder. It would make it easier and way more compact. I am still exploring ideas of building up the truck. Money is tight so I like creating a budget overland truck. I am glad you enjoyed my video. I have a lot of fun making them. Happy trails my friend! ✌️🙂

I had a Similar idea so I asked the google monster and it showed me your site. But my idea is to take the legs off and make a frame for the tent cot to unfold on while mounted on my kayak fishing trailer.

      Thank you google monster.
It worked great for a short term solution for me. Getting up and down was a little sketchy. Very cheap idea at the time.

Put a couple of claw hook extension poles on the outer legs to support the weight. Same way you would use them to support an awning or tent frame..👍🇦🇺

I have the same setup, except with a Kamp-Rite, in the bed of my truck. I'm not paying $1,200 for a rack and $3,000 for the tent when I can do the same thing for $300.

It’s a great inexpensive tent option. I prefer the Kamprite over the Cabelas for its pockets and ease of setup. Also it’s taller.

B-roll king. Love it D. Curious to see how this holds up... got me looking at racks again...you should patent the DHTNRTC

How about adding a maybe a sheet of plywood or what ever length by width under the legs for support.

That’s a good idea. However the feet are strapped down to the aluminum roof top frame. I just slept in it last night and it seems to be able to hold all of my weight. Even if I move around a lot. I found that Rhino Racks have a sizable rack that I can fit the legs into. I am constantly engineering better ways to outfit my Tacoma.
