    After many years of considering the options for my camping trips to the backcountry in Canada with my UTV, I think I may have the answer.
    It’s a combination of a tent and a hammock (in my mind) with the best of both worlds. It keeps you up off the ground like a hammock but is stable and roomy like a tent. The only obvious downside is the weight and size.
    This is no problem if your car camping or like me, have a UTV / Side x Side to haul it around with.
    The build quality is good with fully taped seams and chunky zippers. Esme and I easily slept in the cot in comfort, especially with my new Therm-a-Rest Basecamp XL mat, which fit perfectly!
    I topped that off with my Canadian Forces down sleeping bag and I was very comfortable even though the temperature dropped to below freezing.
    I think this is a great piece of gear for the right purpose and I’m very glad I bought it. I will be reviewing the tent cot again in a few years to let you know how the wear and tear aspect of the unit goes.

    I have this same tent/cot and I love it. There are a few considerations I'd add, prefaced by an introduction: I'm close to 63 years old, I'm 6'-5" tall and 250+ pounds. I've broken my back twice. I've always slept on the ground under a tarp, but it's getting to be a challenge to get up from the ground. This cot/tent has been a great solution. After a couple practices, I can set it up in about 60 seconds. It accommodates my size easily and I can now easily stand up from it. I can have it as open or closed as the weather dictates. At about $180 including rain cover and shipping, I consider it a great value.

      I'm pretty much in exactly the same boat as you except & little younger & a little shorter. I've taken to hammock camping & I honestly feel better when I get out of a hammock than my own bed. I like the Kamp-Rite too & still want to try it tho

      Hi Wayne - that's a great story and it shows if you are determined to keep active and outdoors you will find a way that works! Once you set it up a bunch of times it does get easier. I even leave my sleeping pad inside now - to save packing it away. Best wishes Michael

    my husband and I always enjoyed camping, we always had a big tent and our dog always went camping with us. Penny was a mix and he would sit up on his back legs and just look around him. a couple saw him and had to take his picture. He sat like that for a good half hour. I love Esme, she is beautiful and fun to watch. thanks for sharing, I love to watch them but I freeze watching you two in all that snow.

    Another thing you could do for inclement weather is to set the Kamp-Rite cot up between a couple of trees and then hang a lightweight tarp off a ridge-line tied to the them. You could easily adjust the height of the tarp for varying exposure and give yourself an awning to protect the opening of the cot where you sit, enter and exit. The tarp would give you added weather protection and more space out of the rain. Just an idea. Nice video.

      Exactly what I do. The rain fly that comes with it certainly keeps you dry, but it obstructs way too much air circulation. The tarp overhead keeps me dry even when I have my tent cot completely open.

      I was thinking similarly that a simple tarp rig could be set up between the cot and the utv to create a nice space for relaxation, cooking, etc.

    I've had one of these for about 6 years now, Mine is a Kookaburra brand and it only had 2 legs instead of 4 and no multi-section roof poles. I use it for car camping mostly, and I have a big tarp that I put over the roof of the wagon, attach to the wheel arches on the far side with bungy cord. I have a line of paracord from the roofrack to a tree for a ridge pole and I just tie the two corners out to make an awning that covers one side of my car and gives me a large covered area along side the car to set up the tent/bed under. I have some mobility issues, so for a disabled man to be able to set up a dry camp with a bed up off the ground and a 12x12 covered area by himself in about the time it takes to set up a 2 person dome tent is awesome. Can't recommend these camp cots highly enough, they're a gamechanger for car camping, touring and road trips. Looks like you could easily incorporate a similar thing with a tarp over the top of your UTV.

      Hey Digger - that sounds like a great setup! I think you might be on to something with using the vehicle as part of the shelter! I'm glad you don't let a physical disability get in the way of enjoying the freedom of the outdoors! It's an inspiring story my friend. Best wishes from Canada!

    We have a couple of these , I string up a tarp over it like a leanto and put my gear and shoes under the cot . I put a small piece of carpet on the ground to keep the dirt out of it . With the tarp over it you can have the screens open even if it rains . Thumbs up !

    Interesting concept, this looks great for summer camping with dog. For winter it will need a skirt to hold the air and also allow for storage of boots, stove, jackets etc. Here in northwestern Canada, it can chill things above ground quickly with a -30 something breeze blowing underneath.... And waking up and lighting a gas stove for coffee is great if there's enough room in the tent fly.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  7 років тому +2

      I plan to test it in Winter here too. We typically get average winter temps from -20c to -30c but it can go all the way down to -40c+. I agree the addition of a skirt would be the way to go. I'll be sure to make a video of my first attempts!

    Just used it this weekend in 35F° and rain entire day and stopped by the afternoon in CA.
    Yes the condensation is bad on the ceiling and I'm aware from all the reviews. I wiped it off with a towel and cooked breakfast by then the ceiling is dried.
    Oh my cot doesn't have any interior storage which kind of sucks. But I have the oversized and has plenty of room for my gear.
    Being off the cold ground is sooo nice. Yes I think I'll keep it. Thank you for great review and helped me to decides.

    Liked your video bud, good work. Looks like a pretty nice little piece of kit, one idea though. Why not scrap that rain pod thing and get a decent sized tarp. Say a 10' or 12'. Then you suspend it Basha style over the sleeper. Just an idea. I'm a Canadian temporary living in the US, always nice to see home.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors

    OK MICHAEL my tent cot came today and I set it up. After looking at your video again I realize that you made the same mistake that I did. I couldn’t get it to go flat I ended up calling them, they have excellent customer service by the way, the clips need to be on the bottom of the supports that rest on the ground. Once I reclipped them I was able to tighten them up enough to get it to go flat. I gave you a little shout out to the manager that helped me on the phone I told him it was because of you that I bought it. Thank you again this is going to be perfect for what I need.

      I plan on buying 3. One for each my husband and myself. One for food and equipment. The homeless situation here in Illinois is crazy. We were homeless for about 13 months and had to borrow a tent from my boss. It was a 3 man and incredibly small. These would be a terrific solution should that ever comes up again. I learned this- never think it won't happen to you. I am a certified adoptions caseworker for Illinois. Our rent increased 27% along with loosing my job in the c19 year. It happens to the best of us. 3 of these would be ideal. M. Illinois.

    Since the weight is already extreme for hiking I would put a coat or two of outdoor paint on the rain fly to give it more protection. Also, the space between the fly and tent could easily be stuffed with a comforter for insulation in colder weather. This thing does come in a double for 2 people, which is the one I have been looking at. Thanks for posting this awsome system.

    I had a Kamp-Rite extended version, I loved it because it kept me off the ground and could store equipment and still sleep comfortable. I didn't like how it was alledged to support 200+ pounds, yet with 15 pound hiking bag with supplies included in weight plus my the 175 lbs, tore around edges. The rain tarp I had to pay extra for kept me dry except for condensation build up, not the best there, ended up rigging a tarp to block rain yet remain breathable and have a steady breeze. I would not recommend for camping longer than a week stretch at a time unless you reinforce the bottom canvassing and an extra tarp to tie to trees for rain blocking.

      I think there is always a battle between what the customer will pay and the quality you can make an item for. The Australian swag bag type tents are expensive - but I agree - perhaps a more expensive version with better spec materials would sell enough to make a profit for them.

      Longshoreman and since the pandemic I've been sleeping in my car instead of the bunk house. South Texas has moody weather hot cold windy to no wind and hot. I've put regular window screen on my car doors but I can bare the heat and humidity any longer. Video and comments convinced me to order this tent I too can't wait for my order to arrive.

Think of the options. Ugh...here I go again.

      Yea - it's a step up from a hammock in my book - much more room and not as location specific (no tree's) :). Maybe the lightweight model would be a good option for an ATV? They are lighter and pack down smaller. I haven't tried one yet but........ :D

    I saw the Original version the first time. Only has two legs. Did not think much of it.
    But this newer larger version looks nice.
    I think your straps are a bit off. They need to go to the bottom of the inside legs.
    WHAT? No little bits of string to tie the fly up... BAH!
    Velcro... not near the screens!
    Read some reviews about the fly leaking in heavy rain. Need to seam seal!
    What many do not understand is you can get soaked without rain.
    You breathe out a lot of water during the nite and it condenses on the tent fabric,
    leaving you quite wet in the morning.
    Nice review & nice dog.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 років тому +1

      The ultimate for me would be if it had a bit of room in folded up position, so you could leave your sleeping bag/pad setup inside. This is one of the things I like about a rooftop tent, they have room for sleeping gear to store with it. Would save even more setup time. Otherwise I do really like this tent setup.

    I got one when they 1st came out many years ago. No poles or rain fly and the top it was just flat , sit up and your head would hit the top. I would set it up and then hang a tarp between a couple of trees. That gave me a lot of protection since I liked to sleep with the ends and sides rolled up with the bug netting closed. One trip I had plenty of head room and space I used a 16 x 16 tarp with the cot under the center of it. It worked out pretty good for car camping and having a camp set up really fast , even the take down was fast and easy to do.
    One thing i did not like ....There was a bar across the center of the bottom that would get uncomfortable during the night. I would put a standard Therm-a-rest air mattress in the cot for some paddling and get a good nights sleep. It's been retired ( I still have it ) and replaced with two different items . A Clark Tropical Hammock or a Warbonnet Blackbird Hammock since I like to backpack.
    Correction , I purchased it in 2001 and retired the cot in 2007 , I originally posted the wrong date and want to correct that mistake.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  7 років тому

      Thanks Chuck for all the great experience with the cot tent. How would you say the tent looked after many years of service? I was worried about the bars also - but the Therm-a-rest does a great job! I like lots of outdoor activities too and like you also use a hammock to backpack. I use the Hennessy Explorer but I've heard great things about the Warbonnet products. Take care, Michael.

    • @Oldsparkey
      @Oldsparkey 7 років тому

      It's held up pretty good. I keep it in my workshop when it is not being used and in it's bag. I take it out and set it up in the sunlight to let it air out one or two times a year. I did manage to break one of the straps from the end down to the foot of it. Repairs were easy , overlapped the break and sewed ( Hand stitched ) it together. Nothing fancy but functional. In the past I camped in it from the Smokey mountains to the Mississippi River area and a lot of spots here in Florida. Back then I did get a lot of questions and comments about it.
      My answer to keep the door flaps out of the way is a little unconventional but a couple of clothes pins work pretty good. I fold the two door flaps over the top , pinch them together and fasten them with a couple of clothes pins. That flat top makes it easy to do that. Back then all they had is what they call the Original today. I really like the one you demonstrated with the extra height and width , that is nice.

    Also to add if summer temps are warm and have access to power pole or generator to run extension cord a regular size box fan sits perfectly on either end and tie it off on handle of fan to the top end of tent bracket
    You’ll be the envy of The campgrounds lol
    I used mine for up to 3 weeks at a firework tent in June thru July 5th had that box fan set up in end On low and slept very comfortable
    The ends open up at an angle so you can see the stars at night I traveled around the country and would set up out of the way from people at rest areas
    The only thing about it is people wanted to know where I got it lol I was glad to meet many people over it that had never seen one
