thanks for this series. i've been looking for a solo sleep arrangement for my setup and love the view and advantages of a RTT but couldn't justify the cost or size on my vehicle. And as of yet none of the manufactures are making a solo tent which only uses half of my roof to allow me to keep my narrow cargo box on one side very similar to your kayak setup. just what i was looking for. i actually hear kamp rite is currently developing a RTT . seems they realize their products potential.
That's great news! Same thing for me, when traveling solo there is no need to occupy the entire rack with a family sized RTT! If ya see any good info on the Kamp Rite Solo please come on back and let us know!
for back problems it was hard for me to crouch down and get into the traditional one, which someone has and just showed me yesterday (that's why i'm thinking of getting one)...how many in higher is the oversized one...
Does the cot tent stay upright only using the 2 middle legs? The kamprite "original" tent cot only has 2 legs but the "oversized" tent cot has four legs, but my roof basket isn't big enough for all 4 legs
Sorry man but I really don’t know. My assumptions would be that if it has 4 legs that it would be necessary for them all to be used to support any weight inside. Maybe contact their customer service and ask them. Good luck!
Thanks for the suggestion. I checked it out, hadn't seen it before. The interior structures looks no different than the REI one from what I could tell. The $995 price point is attractive however. But if I was going for a full width, total rack occupying RTT I'd probably opt for the highest tiered models. It still has the same problem for me, which was the main reason I've opted for this diy approach. That RTT still occupies the entire width of a roof rack. Not acceptable for my applications. I either need to carry a bike or a kayak, sometimes both, on top, along with a sleeping platform. See part two. ua-cam.com/video/URk95O6-reE/v-deo.html As mentioned in the video, I just wish a company would produce something that takes up a single side of the rack, unfolds off the side of the rack with supporting struts or whatever, leaving space to be used otherwise. The search continues. Am I going to have to go into business and make them myself?! How has this concept not been developed yet?? Thanks for stopping by.
I recall wondering the same thing. I can’t be totally sure. The one I bought came with it, and I might have specifically chosen the one that said it did. I just don’t recall. You could contact Kamp Rite. I had an email exchange with them about replacement rain fly poles. They respond fairly quickly.
I’m pretty sure the gate wouldn’t shut, but with the gate open it should be fine. Just a guess. The specs can be seen on the first part of the video, on the box, I believe.
I weigh 205 lbs. I don’t remember having any bars across my back from sagging down that far. I’ve had that on other cots, but if my memory serves me, this one doesn’t have that problem.
@@DonegalOverlanding Well, it's hard to read tones on a written medium. Sorry if my response sounded dickish, but your comment was a little off-putting. I may have been mistaken. My apologies. Wild animals, namely bears in Alaska, as I described in the middle of the video, are precisely why I devised this method. But, when outside of areas where those are nearby I have mostly used it on the ground and much prefer to do so. Check out the rest of the series if you have time, and I talk a bit about why I had it up there and the pros and cons of doing so. Thanks for stopping by and sorry again.
i looking the roof tent to buy, it’s too much money and i don’t camp like camp alots, so this is very good option for me, thanks bro

I had the same idea. Check out the front runner feather lite. Its only 88 pounds so a strong guy could take it on and off by himself.

Nice video. I was wondering what is the trick to make the tent stable. on 7:02 it seems to be skipped.
Thanks.
It just uses these tie down straps. I just snugged them down tightly. It's easier to do with it on its side rather than crouching down.
I just bought 2 of those
is there a warranty on it...and is the oversize one just longer and wider? What's your height
Not sure. I’m about 210 lbs.
What are the demensions of your roof rack??
You’d have to look on the Frontrunner website for the 100 series Land Cruiser Large Rack.
the rain-fly comes with all these tents? its confusing on amazon and ebay because some times the rainfly is listed as an additional purchase

I believe they have two different size rain flies. The one that comes with it is smaller and the other goes completely to the ground.
Hi what’s the footprint of the legs when open? Wondering if it would fit in the bed of my short bed Tacoma

I'm disabled with back problems.
Do you have a pole going across your back when laying down?

What is the point of putting it on the roof? Why not just use it on the ground as its intended?
Use your imagination.
@@CaptMaxADV I can only think its about wild animals or something, but hey, thanks for the valuable response.
