"There are many aspects of human potential that grades can't measure." I'd agrue that what we measure with grades are some of the least important things we could be measuring in any single person. These videos are amazing for teaching, along with self improvement, self realization, figuring out the psyche, mending/approaching relationships, parenting, and general knowledge. It's what we should be teaching in classrooms instead of triva facts and hyperspecific skills like calculus.
Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure things out. It is the development of knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions, which help children to think about and understand the world around them.👍
My son just graduated from the Open Classroom, a parent co-op school where Whole-Child learning is integral part of the philosophy and practice. A book about the OC philosophy was co-authored by Dr. Barbara Rogoff. In my education in child development and educational psychology, there's no question about the developmental needs of children, and I'm so grateful to have found a school that recognizes these needs and built their practice around them. I wish for this to be offered to all children!!!
Also: how awesome to highlight a female scientist! Teaching child development classes, I teach about Piaget, of course. But in my own education and in my teaching, I have not had Ackermann included. Thank you for highlighting her work! (Even though it's from a very different theoretical perspective, I also thought of Anna Freud, on whose work I was educated. Her work on 'developmental lines' is very interesting and hardly ever taught about anymore).
👍Love Ackerman's contribution to theories of human development. Each contributor (Freud, Piaget, Maslow, Erikson, Kholberg and more) has interesting and helpful observations that help us understand ourselves better. I like the wholistic approach. It allows for the unknown and individuality. And it is one of the only illustrations I can think of that chooses a girl rather than a boy. It may seem like a small detail, but I think it makes a big difference. Thank you!

The attempt to sort and categorize arises in the "hard" sciences. Humans are in one of those categories. Traditionally, hard sciences tend to be considered more "real" and more closely follow a manufacturing model. Those are the folks who tend toward the teaching profession. They want today to be predictable, to follow established patterns. They want tomorrow to be that way too. Others are explorers, wanting variety and new challenges daily. These folks are hard to find in any "typical" school system. They are more likely to be found in charter and adventure schools, the arts, and working as entrepreneurs. What do you, the reader, think?

Holistic development is more important than cognitive development..cognitive development is jus a part of it.,.most of the cognitive tasks is getting replaced by a,i.. so how would you use a piece of technology for the betterment of mankind?or shall we keep on creating individuals who will use these technolgies without any sense of humanity just for their selfish motives.So in future ,it is not about our mental abilities or mental skills but how we use certain skills to help others .

My dad is a political psychologist and he told me that in general children's communication and behavior skills tend to correlate with their primary caretakers. In most western countries, the primary caretakers are mothers. I also notice how much exposure can affect language such as my friend whose Spanish improved significantly when she visited a predominantly Spanish-speaking country than when she was taking classes for it. I guess being in a mostly Spanish-speaking country made it more essential to learn the language. It was also easier for her to find the pattern that the group words together - grammatical structure. An example is how the subject (the topic of discussion), noun (person place, place, or thing), and then verb (identifies action or state of being) is used in an English sentence. After a lot of exposure to conversations so I could relate to what people are verbalizing may mean my dad would use cards with images to confirm my understanding. After checking my relation of spoken words to images he then had assigned me to practice drawing letters and relating the sound I make with those letters (phonics). He then exposes me to a collection of letters that makes a word and has me try to make the connections of it between images and/or what I verbalize. He then taught me how to group my words to make a sentence so that people would understand what I am trying to communicate. My dad also has the captions on when I watch tv so I could relate what the characters say to the words that pop up.
