I am recently getting into painting models and was looking for info on airbrushing as it’s all completely new to me. It was nice to have a video where someone realised you might not have hundreds and hundreds to splash out on the super best kit as a hobby. A very helpful and clear video. Thank you.
Hi there, I have just finished building a timber rocking horse, but now I need to paint it. Stipple brushes just aren't producing the exact effect I want, so I thought I would look at airbrushing. Your video is wonderful - clear, concise and so informative. I feel confident I can now purchase the correct tool for the job. Congrats on a great video.

Dont buy an Iwata now. Get a Master kit and get 3 brushes and a compressor for 130 bucks. Build yourself a spray booth for 35 bucks and get a Harder and Steenbeck when you get good.
You're right. There is nothing wrong with your idea. What I was trying to say is that buying cheap Chinese-made compressors is a bad choice from an economic viewpoint. Chinese hardware won't last as long as quality hardware. Quite often you pay more for the Chinese hardware because of price to "how long it will last" ratio. There's also matter of comfort. Good compressor means less frustration :) Ps. Sorry for my funny English. I'm Polish ^^
I’ve used an Iwata airbrush when I taught my friend how to properly use it but I’ve been a Badger user for more than 20 years now. To me they have the same quality and Badger had come out with their top of the line airbrushes like the Badger Renegade RK-1 Krome. What I like about Badger is that I can personally bring my airbrush to their shop to be fixed in Franklin Park, Illinois and its about 45 minutes drive from my place. At times I can even wait while they fix the airbrush. Thank you for your very informative video and I will share this with my friends. Be safe
The quality of Badger is not quite up to the level of Iwata. Badger makes good brushes for Tshirt artist and model painting. But for automotive and fine art, Iwata as well as H&S, Creos, and a few others are in another league. Not that a Renegade or Sotar 20/20 aren't able to pull some very fine detail, but not with the consistency of a Micron, or infinity. A great artist can make anything work, but better tools make for less headaches. This has been my experience anyway.
Great video! I am looking to airbrush moving from spray cans and this video was helpful. Getting an Iwata Eclipse and a Timbertech AS186 compressor. I am personally going to use it to paint military models, I had no idea painting model horses was a thing
Excellent video I’ve been looking at videos the past couple months and I think this is the video that will make me pull the trigger no pun intended on my purchase of my first airbrush and compressor.
Just wanted to say thanks. I keep coming back to this video for the info. I finally got a chance to use my iwata hp-cs, but with a compressor I got as a hand-me-down. Loved the airbrush, but compressor was disappointing. Came back to this video and bought a compressor with a tank. Thanks for all the great info!! 🙂
I build model cars, ships, and houses.the details on those horses are amazing!! great job and thanks for the educational video, always been curious about air brushing.
Really enjoyed your video, although I confess I'm not really a beginner, I own several airbrushes, but I like watching videos for beginners since there is always something new to learn. You picked a great airbrush to showcase! As it could easily last 20+ years Some of the airbrushes made in the early 1900s are not only still around, but they work as well as when they were first made.
That is the same exact airbrush I have, but I haven’t been airbrushing very long and I don’t airbrush very often, so that doesn’t help, but it is a really nice airbrush. I won’t ever have your skills, but I sure enjoyed seeing the horses you’ve painted with your airbrush. You are quite skilled at your hobby young lady. Thank you again for showing the airbrush you use and I hope you have a wonderful evening!
Good presentation and explanation. Just a few amendments. With single actions you only press down, not pull back. You need to drain that water from your compressor's water trap. Hope you drain the tank every week as well. Do not use those little brushes in your airbrush. It has a metal center and can damage the soft brass insides. That nozzle tool is not applicable to the Eclipse range. Even though it looks like you can take the nozzle apart, you should not. Even replacement nozzles come in a single unit. The head wrench is also not necessary after the first clean. You just need to tighten the head finger tight. A tip is to get a PVC hose from Iwata. They are lighter and softer. Much easier to handle then that thick braided hose. Get some quick releases for your compressor and airbrush. You do not need to unscrew everything every time. Otherwise great work. You get beautiful results with the short time you've been using it.
I’m definitely still learning myself. I’ve only been airbrushing for 2 years. Thank you for the tips. I will consider all these things for sure. I have learnt many things since posting this video as well. I appreciate a good airbrush enthusiast. Thanks for the comment
Listening to you convinced me to buy the Iwata Revolution instead of the Badger 105 Patriot. I have been on the fence for a bit. I paint brass model trains using mostly enamels. It seems suited to the work I perform. Thank you so much for sharing your comments and opinions. I'm looking forward to watching your videos in the future.
I enjoyed your video & found it helpful. I am a model builder & like German WWII tanks which requires the use of an airbrush for what can be complex paint jobs. I am new to airbrushing & trying to consider what brand of airbrush to go with. Iwata has an excellent reputation. Are they easy to disassemble & clean?
Great video and thanks for doing this. It's hard to find a clear buying guide with peoples' brand preferences and encouraging spending $300+ on one's first airbrush. The only piece of advice I would add is DON'T spend $25-$30 on an airbrush. The brush will work fine until you have to clean it, and then you'll spend more time disassembling and cleaning than you will airbrushing. I made that mistake and when I finally invested $100 CAD on a Badger Patriot I found ease of use and maintenance to be the biggest plus.
Don't forget about model railroading. I use my airbrushes for my models. Harbour Freight one for lacquer paints and a Badger 155 Anthem for acrylics. I beg to differ; Badger is the best airbrush line. My 155 Anthem will do as much as your Iwata and much cheaper. The Harbour Freight was only $89.00 with compressor and the Badger was only $58.00. Both of mine are bottom feed but can be used with colour cups.
I'm so glad I found your video about the rare model, and saw this, I have been wondering how to and what to use to paint and touch up these models. And I've wondered about getting my own air brush kit. Thank you!!!
1. Your work is incredible. 2. Do they make Missouri Foxtrotter? Had no idea there were model horses. 3. Iwata are great. Harder and Steenbeck imo are the best.
Great video. On ebay I bought a compressor like yours for $85.00. I have a Master G22 airbrush and I love it. I use it all the time. It comes with 3 Nozzle Sets (0.2, 0.3 & 0.5mm) Needles for $25.00. Your horse look great.
Thank you so much. I've been painting Dungeons and Dragons miniatures for twice your life span and can't paint as well as you can. I want to try air brushing and this info really helped. Keep up the good work!
I don't have my first airbrush yet but looking at what I need for a newbie. Very helpful video, would like to know though where you buy your models from too?
Good video! #1 from my experience, BUY GOOD PAINT!! You get what you pay for. Vallejo is my favorite. If you have crappy cheap paint then it doesn't matter what equipment you own, bad paint produces bad results. If you have to thin acrylic, don't use water, use reducer. I started with top tier equipment and could not get it right until I realized that it was the cheap paint that I bought as a big set at a low price. Got a bottle of Vallejo model air and it all came together.
I have the same compressor but without the tank, it also shuts off when you are not spraying. Your video makes it sound a lot louder than they actually are, so dont let this put you off people.... Best thing I found for cleaning the inside of the airbrush is the interdental brushes, they seem to come in the same sizes as many nozzles, 0.2 0.3 0.4mm etc and they are far softer than the nasty wire brushes you get in cleaning kits. Very nice video for people getting into airbrushing, also came here from a mini-wargaming source :-)
I know this is an older video but I will add the big difference between that cheaper compressor vs the higher priced ones, is that the higher priced once are going to be much quieter. So if that is a concern it might be worth the higher price
Invaluable advice! I followed it to a tee and am very happy with the result. You also “saved my bacon” through your other video on disassembling and reassembling the Eclipse airbrush. I had taken it apart and couldn’t get it back together again!! One question, I can get the quick release fitting (ordered through Amazon) to snug up to my Iwata air hose…male end to female end. Leaks like crazy. Any suggestions?
As my first best AB I purchased a PS289 0.3mm GSI Creos, using it for about 9 months, very happy. Nex two were PS290 0.5 trigger type and ps270 0.2mm. these are not cheap but reliable. For dirty painting (black paint or primer for example) I'm using cheaper ABs. These are Fengda ABs. Well, I have from Fengda almost the same setup 0.2mm Fengda BD-180, 0.5mm BD320, 0.8mm BD186, also additional parts for 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 mm needle set-up. I still have my first AB, in Poland it is called Magma AB-130E but actually it is Fengda BD130. It was my first AB (now I'm using it only for pre-shading), received it as a gift 1year ago, swapped nozzle/needle from chinese to japanese (was able to get a nozzle and needle from ps270 only for 25$) so outside it is a cheep chinese airbrush but from inside it is ps270 (of course there is a problem when it doesn't spray, so regulation of nozzle cap is needed, but all the time it works). One more AB I have (for free due to damage the delivery service did, so the store didn't have a new kit to send me and left me with money and AB kit) is NeoEco NCT-SJ83. It is cheap but it is a good quality AB. I would like to test Anest Iwata ABs but maybe later. And would like to have a Meiji MP-3 ab, I have bigger spray guns from this manufacturer Finer-Core 13 and F410 1.5mm, very satisfied. Have a good day 😉
I've owned an HP-BC for over 30 years. Awesome airbrush. Advantage of siphon feed, Large bottle capacity. Great when doing larger projects. When I purchased it, it was going to be used for a few murals. So I needed a larger capacity. After the job was completed, I realized it is a bit cumbersome when doing small scale models. (1/76 scale etc) I do have a kinda under mount/side cup, more maneuverable, but as you said, there is a danger of tipping and dripping paint. Gotta be a bit more careful. You learn the hard way....Lol (BTW, side mounts can be a bit more awkward to handle when using a large cup. Keep it in mind.) Great vid. Thanks for sharing. Sure it will help beginners. And yup, Iwata is great! Cheers.
Very well made video,I kniw there are a lot of things to explain and not that much time but you said what is important,I have the same air compresor but not the same airbrush,I think i will buy one like yours, they seem to have the right quality, thanks you for the video
Your videos are so informative! Do you sometimes not use the airbrush at all during a custom? Also, it would be interesting to see how you sculpt horse faces/heads (if you would like)! They have so many fine details.
Thank you! I generally always use my airbrush now, it is the fastest way to get a basecoat down on the model. I use pastel for the final layers, for what I cannot achieve with the airbrush. For me personally, it is a speed factor. No need to pastel 5 layers of base when I can just airbrush it in an hour. I will be making a tutorial on pastelling in the future. A face sculpture video is in the works
Honetly I have Nothing against Iwata but in my opinion Harder & Steenbeck is the wat to go. I have had a Harder & Steenbeck airbrush for 4 years now and it literally never failed on me once.
Hi Deejay, Thanks for the information here. I love building mainly car models over the years but never bought an air brush. I have a question though. On my main road car I have a small scratch on the rear bumper, could I touch it up with this Iwata brush? After that I will use it mainly for modelling. Thanks again from England 🇬🇧.Good work. 👍🏆.
I will do this someday soon! Will you send any links to good 1:6 scale horses? I like what I see of your a lot, especially the heavy horses ( for Knights) thanks!
Great video for someone like me who has never used an airbrush. Have to say, though, I kind of couldn't wait for it to be over because of the annoying music background. Maybe just me, but wow. Still, really good info. Thanks for doing it.
I’ve dabbled in airbrushing for a few years. I have a cheap Testors Aztec that I’ve had for about 20 years. It’s my main “Go to” because I can lay smooth gloss coats with reduced enamels. I’ve also purchased a Badger Creshendo for a bit higher price, but I’ve been a little nervous about using it. I’m getting back into modeling, and I know it’s a much better brush. I’ve been looking at UA-cam videos to get me to use the Badger, and thanks for explaining what you’ve done. I’m gonna give the old Badger a try. Wish me luck! I’m gonna start an old kit that’s been on my shelf a long time. I’ve acquired a bunch of out of production kits, and want to be sure that my lack of knowledge wouldn’t be the reason why they might look bad. 😬
Thank you for this insight, i am looking to buy my first airbrush and have found this very helpful, all i have to do now is find everything on Amazon UK.
You’re the first person I watched who talked about a mask, I had no idea but thankfully it’s 2020 and I have masks....will a two layer mask with a filter be good?
My air compressor doesn't turn back on to fill the tank once it loses pressure I have to turn it on manually it stopped me from airbrushing completely because I was frustrated after going below a certain pressure.
Whoa.... Whoooooaaaaa girl. Your going to work up a lather at at that pace. - You are definitely covering a lot of ground. You really hit some good points (and your horses look great by the way) but leave a little room for another video. PS - but you made me smile.
So I spray my own furniture and kitchens using a conventional spray gun and compressor set up and I’m wondering if an airbrush would be good for touch up work. Any idea if the water based paint that I use in my conventional spray gun would go through an airbrush or would additional thinning be required or would it not go through at all? Many thanks
You would have to use a different kind of paint I believe. One that will cure to clothing. This kind of paint I use will just wash off because it’s just acrylic.
Was wondering, is that 3m filter, 60921 good for airbrushing with lacquer paints? I paint model kits and I was wondering if it is the right filter for lacquer airbrushing. Good video and very informative. Thanks
My concern is your health and safety. As a former finishing manager, you should make sure your respirator is also properly cleaned and maintained. Most filters have a short shelf life and need to be stored properly to keep them absorbing fumes, check your package. I am looking to get into airbrushing. Thank you for your input, I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
I now use water based acrylics. So they aren’t particularly toxic. For spraying sealants and enamels, even more care is required. I cant smell any fumes when I use my respirator. So I believe that is enough care for the products I use.
Could you show us how to mix paints with water when using acrylics? And how to mix the right paints to achieve a certain color? (If not its fine) I enjoy watching these videos! Super helpful!
You will find mixing acrylics with water is frustrating, since it causes a lot of tip dry! I use a airbrush medium, instead of reducer and with golden or Iwata Com-Art paint you do not need to thin.
Thanks for this video! Lots of great info that I was looking for as I consider getting one. Also, your horses look awesome! I paint minis for games and have done a handful of horses and really enjoyed doing the different patterns.
Im young and my parents thought air brushing is a good to take my mind off things and to make some money im very artistic and im pretty good at drawing, painting ect. do you have any ideas of what i could start with?
It has a 0.35mm needle not a 35mm needle siphon feed from a bottle are better for larger items as you hold more paint also color changes are quicker with bottle feed
Thank you so much I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of air compressor to get to start our air brush painting and your video was spot on. I was wondering if the compressor with tank would be too noisy to have in a dorm room and how dangerous the paint fumes are. I’ve just started my first year of college and have been thinking about whether or not I’d want to take my airbrush with me next semester but I don’t want to irritate the girls on my hall or give them cancer since our ventilation is all connected. We’ve been told not to use fixative in our dorms because students have gotten a little high off of it and so I was wondering how long the fumes are dangerous and if they’d spread through the vents or if I can just use a mask while I’m painting and maybe open my window.
Airbrush paint fumes aren’t too terrible. Definitely always wear a mask as your painting. You can buy an airbrush specific fume hood for your desk too- I don’t love the setup of those but it works for some. I would suggest buying an air purifier for the room & definitely open the window. If you live in a warm climate you can also hook up a box fan to the window. I’ve researched this a lot lately and it’s hard to find a good solution. I don’t find airbrushing as harmful as Dremel byproduct. But I only use water based acrylic paint- so it’s pretty safe. definitely don’t ever spray sealers or aerosols indoors. Always go outside for that.
IF you can save it up buy a Harder and Steenbeck Infinity CR plus, the 2+1 set { £220} comes with a real fine detail needle and a bigger needle set up for larger jobs, it is a proper artist tool and all serious modelmakers and graphic artists use this set. You really will only buy it once in your lifetime and it will save you lots of heartache while your learning, it is a pro tool that is veryeasy to clean. All airbrushing takes practice no matter what the cost and IF you buy decent stuff and dont keep it up you WILL sell it on easily
THANK YOU. Loved this video very informative and to-the-point. One question though. I will mainly use this for drawings and paintings on a canvas. Do I really need the more expensive airbrush paints or would be be too much of a sacrifice to go with normal acyrlic paint and thin it out?
It’s a lot more work and you’ll fight a lot more clogs with regular paint. People do it all the time; I just prefer putting my paint right into the airbrush with no hassle. (I get enough clogs with that as is) I bought an entire batch of Vallejo model air for $200 or so & that will last me years. I would recommend it, but of course it’s not entirely necessary.

Great job young lady. Congrats !!!!
You are so beautyful artist.
Take care.
Best video I’ve found on this subject, great job!
Nice job on the video, DJ. Very thorough and well thought out. I would not have thought to include spare part and lube links. Thank you.
Very informative, thanks very much. I've done some rattle can spraying so interested in the extra control that airbrushes offer.
So glad I could help! You can buy air seal tape at a department store. Use a bit of that on the thread. It creates an airtight seal.
This video was extremely helpful! Purchasing my Iwata now! Thank you very much.
Based my entire initial shopping list on this video. Thanks very much!
Thanks simple and direct. Just what I needed.....
Have a good day 😉
Got a iwata, waiting for a kobalt 2gal quiet compressor, good job on the horses,it took me years to create a realistic bad paint job on military tanks😬
Keep it in mind.)
Great vid. Thanks for sharing. Sure it will help beginners. And yup, Iwata is great! Cheers.
Thank you, this guide is exactly what I needed as I consider trying airbrushing for the first time for scale models. The links are very helpful too.
I love your videos. Would you reveal which and how many colors you should buy as a beginner in order to be able to paint most horse colors?
Wow. You did a great job on those horses. Look so real.
Great video! Thank you for posting, I was so confused about the parts but you literally covered absolutely everything!!
I'm hoping to buy the Badger 105 for my first. American made.
Very well made video,I kniw there are a lot of things to explain and not that much time but you said what is important,I have the same air compresor but not the same airbrush,I think i will buy one like yours, they seem to have the right quality, thanks you for the video
Very helpful, straight to the point video. I appreciate it coming from a beginner
This was unbelievable helpful. Thank you for the help.
Like your vid. Will be in touch with some questions someday soon. Thanks!
Hey there. This was very helpful! How often would I need to replace the 3M particulate filters for the mask?
You can start using your airbrush colors like a maven with TriaDart II - a limited palette based color synthesizer.
nice video, the reason most painters know Iwata is that they also make spray guns, to paint cars, bikes, this is where most people know them.
Yeah, You helped guide me. Thank you. I made a good choice. My first upgrade.
Great video for someone like me who has never used an airbrush. Have to say, though, I kind of couldn't wait for it to be over because of the annoying music background. Maybe just me, but wow. Still, really good info. Thanks for doing it.
Great video! Very informative and well organized. Thank you.
I didn’t know model horses were a thing till now but I’m intrigued
Nice informative video. I use an Iwata Neo . Very nice airbrush. It uses the same nozzle and needle as yours.
Thanks for this, just getting into airbrushing models and this was fantastic information!!
I appreciate the time you took to do this!
Thanks for the great advice and info. Your horses look great too!
Would using an air brush work when making porch signs? The stencils I use are large.
You’re the first person I watched who talked about a mask, I had no idea but thankfully it’s 2020 and I have masks....will a two layer mask with a filter be good?
Can you use the same brushes for tshirts
Very well put together info
My air compressor doesn't turn back on to fill the tank once it loses pressure I have to turn it on manually it stopped me from airbrushing completely because I was frustrated after going below a certain pressure.
Whoa.... Whoooooaaaaa girl. Your going to work up a lather at at that pace. - You are definitely covering a lot of ground. You really hit some good points (and your horses look great by the way) but leave a little room for another video. PS - but you made me smile.
So I bought a 40 dollar airbrush? Do you think it will be good enough to airbrush something slightly bigger than a basketball?
Thanks! This helps me choose my first airbrush kit
Thank you so much! so hard to find a decent budget airbrush guide.
Deejay you are so sweet and knowledgeable about the airbrush!!!!
I just got a airbrush. You're so helpful.
Many thanks
I’m planning to use an airbrush for painting my clothes. Will the airbrush paint stay on the garments for a long time???
I have a question I'm a broke student and can you use normal paint instead of special ones?
yeah you just gotta thin it down
What qualifies as a ""normal" paint?
@@murphroberts4891 like waterbased acrylic you know the cheep stuff you buy for your kids when they wanna paint
Thanks for the info. I just bought my airbrush and compressor to extend my artwork.
Awesome video!
SUPER helpful
Will this be good for doing letters, and designs like being able to switch colors and the compressor doesn't burnout?...
I have new videos on air compressors :)
Hello! Would you recommend the Gocheer airbrush brand? 😊
Im young and my parents thought air brushing is a good to take my mind off things and to make some money im very artistic and im pretty good at drawing, painting ect. do you have any ideas of what i could start with?
Superb! Very very very good video ! Great!
Greetings from Zagreb / Croatia
It has a 0.35mm needle not a 35mm needle siphon feed from a bottle are better for larger items as you hold more paint also color changes are quicker with bottle feed
what would you recommend for canvas
Does the compressor produce enough pressure for other uses? Cleaning computers, keyboards and such.
Yes. It goes up to a pressure of 100psi. Perfect for household tasks.
I hope you respond to this comment because I can’t find anything about it, is there anyway you can make a glossy Breyer matte?
Not that I know of. You could try Testors Dull Cote but I believe that will mess with the colours & possibly cause finish issues.
DeeJayBe Studios ok thank you!
Harder and Steenbeck is another great brand.
