    Honestly, the easiest and best tutorial I've seen. I own a perception pescador myself. Awesome to know that this will work on my particular kayak. I want to be able to store it in the front hatch so I won't be gluing it all together. Hopefully it won't render it useless after awhile.

    This is one of the best kayak cart videos out there as it is simple for anyone to do, and we actually get to see all the parts, AND get to see you putting it together. Other videos usually show it all assembled, and you have to guess as to how they put it together. great job!

    Just a few comments: 1) Place wooden dowel sticks inside the PVC to strengthen them and 2) Drill out threads on nuts, before placing them inside the T-Fitting. They work very well as bearings for the all thread rod axle.

    Bought everything but the tires for about 17 dollars from homedepot. Would have been more but i already had the pvc glue, tape, drill bit and hacksaw. I then went to northern tool for the tires and i got soo lucky. When i went in, they were trying to get rid of a bunch of small pneumatic/cart tires and they were all 50% off sticker price (and sticker price was already allot lower than how much they normally would cost. Picked up 2 tires that look exactly like the beach tires that cost 100 dollars except in a different color for 6 bucks. Bought 2 other bigger tires that had big tracks and looked good for mud for 5 bucks. Then picked up this small wheel with spokes for 2 bucks. Was perfect. Spent about 14 bucks in total and couldn't resist buying 5 lol. they would have normally cost me about 100 bucks.

    I was gonna make one of these but so many ppl say it will crack the scupper plug holes. It looks so convenient and easy to make. After researching I got more negative info then positive. Great set up tho. Just be aware.. my kayak is heavy plus gear so I can see where ppl say about the stress. Maybe lighter kayaks it would be better

    You can take a punch and use it on the threads that will stop the nut from coming off. I use nail polish as loctite or you can use a dab of super glue in place of loctite. thanks for the video.

    Looks easy enough - except for one thing - you have to measure the *exact* distance between the centers of each scupper hole and cut your two "center bars" the exact length for a fit. I assume there was some trial and error?

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  8 років тому +2

      You are correct on the trial and error. Hence my reluctance to give actual cut dimensions of the PVC. I start those two center struts by putting a 3-way T in each hole and then measuring the distance from one 90degree bend to another in the other hole. This leaves the piece very close, but usually a little long. But it's better to be long and cut twice than short and have to start over! God bless.

    Hi, great video, thanks for posting. I've watched a few cart construction videos and like you, I'm planning to use a solid plastic wheel. How did you find the wheels performed running directly on the thread of the 'axle'? I'm concerned the wheels will get torn up with all that weight pushing the plastic against the thread. Did you use grease to help minimise the friction or is some sort of metal sleeve needed to sit between the wheel and axle to act as a bearing? Not sure if this was even an issue for you. I'm just trying think ahead and minimise the risk of problems. Thanks again.

    • @tonyl3461
      @tonyl3461 7 років тому

      I have been researching building this type of cart and wondering the very same thing!!!

    • @Drynet
      @Drynet 7 років тому

      I went with a pair of puncture proof wheels with plastic hubs. They had internal diameters of 20mm. I did some research in to bearings and found a set that have an external diameter of 19mm and an internal diameter of 10mm (two to each wheel). This will allow me to use a threaded rod of 10mm (M10).
      I was planning to pack out the PU tube that houses the axel with expanding foam or extra nuts spaced along the threaded rod to help prevent too much flexing. I haven't made it yet, but hopefully with the bearings, there should be no issue with the wheels getting damaged. Unfortunately the cost of bearings pushes the build up by about ten pounds (but I get five for that). Hope that helps.

    @bradjohnson4787 7 років тому

    Good job! How much play is in the axle?

  • @Rockettman
    @Rockettman 6 років тому +1

    How do you strap this thing to the kayak? It also has no support forward or aft of the axle, so won't it just pivot on the bottom of the boat and start dragging the ground? I guess what I'm really saying is that a demonstration of its use would have been a good conclusion to the DIY video.

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  6 років тому +1

      Broomfoot It's meant for sit on top kayaks with scupper holes. A sit in kayak cannot function on this design.

    • @9009matorres
      @9009matorres 6 років тому

      It won't pivot off the bottom like Broomfoot says, but one of the concerns that I've seen commonly with scupper carts is that the ruin the scupper holes. I think this comes from the fact that the little bit of play the pipes have in the scupper holes causes the cart to tilt and distort the shape of the holes. Have you seen that by any chance with your cart? Or is it a perfect fit? I'm contemplating making my own cart but that is a concern of mine, thinking about remedying it with a 4 wheeled cart that utilizes 4 scupper holes rather than two.

  • @MrKerrGriffin
    @MrKerrGriffin 8 років тому

    Thanks for making this video. Do the arms go all the way through the scupper holes or does the kayak just sort of rest on them? My scupper holes are much narrower in the top side of my kayak.

      @averagejackarchery  8 років тому +1

      You're most welcome! Yes, they do for me. Once fully put together, they protrude about 5-6in. above the scupper plugs on the top side of the kayak. God bless.

    I have a few questions, please :) ...I'm transporting my kayak via bicycle. I've already have my DIY trailer made(thank you for the instruct), but right now I'm DIY'ing my own dumb stick. I was wondering if I should go with PVC or Aluminum? And if either-one, I was wondering about the specs. I figure it would require at least 33 inches of length for clearance, though I was wonder how big around would be appropriate for the dumb stick itself?

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  8 років тому

      I would go metal, personally. Any kayak will probably apply too much weight and torque on a PVC stick. I would go to your local hardware store (and even check online) and see if there are weight ratings, or maximum PSI numbers the pipe supports. I don't know what a good number would be, but probably a 2-3" pipe maximum should do the trick. A cast pipe would be the strongest, but also significantly heavier than aluminum. Keep me updated!

    • @justinbarney6286
      @justinbarney6286 8 років тому

      I started brainstorming and used some 1 1/2" thick pine, though to get the clearance above the tire, I had to cut 3 additional short-pieces --stacking them, and then add the main piece on-top. The trick was angling the drill bit to get the same pitch the seat post is at. As for the size of the drill bit? ...I used a 1 1/4" because I remembered the post hole needed to be at least 1 1/8". Then I lined up all the pieces/holes and used 3" screws to bind them all together. 2 3" screws for each block. And the final touch was a bolt screw-eye on the back-bottom of the top-piece. As far as a trailer? ...I used a dollie. After hooking it up and giving it test drive? --it's a success :)

      well broke down and built one.....except I used 1 inch schedule 40 pvc got it all done and the one thing I didn't measure was the scupper hole size...so I will be having to reduce the top pieces down to 3/4inch I guess lol just used what I had thought it would be a bit more sturdy but didn't think about the holes. it should work out fine after I reduce them well see in the next few days
