The Tragedy of the Saboteur

- The Saboteur is a game that flew under the radar back in 2009, however it's a game I remember really enjoying. With that in mind, I decided to re-visit this underrated banger and make a video on it.

Rented this game shortly after its release from GameFly. I was in the Navy at the time. Barracks life! I don't remember beating the game, but getting really close. I had a good time with it. I miss 'different' games like this. Games have lost alot of their identity. There used to be something that made most games what they were. They usually had a specific 'gimmick' Now everything is mostly copy/paste it seems. Good game. It's worth your time.
Thank you very much for your service. I completely agree. Most games nowadays are remakes or just re-releases. There's not a lot of originality anymore, and that's why I wholeheartedly believe that indie developers are the future of the gaming industry. People are starting to realize big AAA studios like Activision and Ubisoft are releasing the same game with a different coat of paint. I hope that we get a sense of originality in the gaming industry very soon.
Hope you had a better time than my cousin in his barracks
First Recon Marines are apparently hosers
Story time: always change your socks, not because Forrest Gump said, but because sometimes glue bunkie decides any sock will do
Fizhy unlocked a childhood memory here. The saboteur was one of the first games I ever played. Had countless hours on it as a kid. Shame we'll never see a sequel.
Oh aye
Rented, then bought, this here game.
Blowing stuff up, then making Sean walk away, facing the camera, and having him light up a cig. Action hero moment right there. XD
Ciggy Devlin
I always did this too when I was playing as a kid! I really liked that you had a button to smoke 😆 It was epic
It is good to see people giving recognition to The Saboteur. IMO a very underrated game. Watching this video, does bring back good memories
Nice profile picture. 🫡
We get up to a mild bit of sabotage in this department of the known universe.
Maybe can you do L.A. Noire once (I mean cover the lore and story of something)
You should check out Velvet Assassin, was pretty good at it's time.
Worked on certification on this game back in 2009. One of the best things that we made while I was there. Always consider myself lucky to have been able to work on this, Dead Space, Spore, and Dragon Age: Origins.
They were cooking back in those days.
The music alone is worth a playthrough :)
Great video. I'm sold, I have to try this game.
I love how this games gives you guns that will not be invented for years and the Germans invade France in 1940 ignoring Poland existence completely
Its basically WW2 Assassin's Creed/Watchdogs, the concept it genius
I will add that if you have the steam version it will have a graphical settings tweaker and the game there when you click play, in a steam menu.
Hope you have a great day & Safe Travels!
I will never forget that, when really hungry, Sean could eat a nun's arse through the convent gates... Ah, les good times! And then EA came and it all went tits up!
13:00 WAIT WAIT WAIT ARE WE JUST LETTING THAT ONE BY
Dark sarcasm, man. 🤷🏻
just finish the game.. im asking myself why tf i can miss this game.. this game never make me looking my phone for scrolling any social media ,coz the main quest or just shooting down some random zeppeline is reallyy fun.Its been a while i feel like that playing video games.
I played the game a lot back in the day
Finally on STEAM
man its not on steam :'(
It is tho
Or as they say it is a banger
So what is the next game you are planning on reviewing next
First one
if only the saboteur was on modern consoles
it's on PC
Or if only it worked on EA’s dogshit desktop app. 🫠
The Saboteur: Reloaded
Exactly, just port it over like they did with Red Dead revolver, or RDR 1
It…. It is
It's always bugged me that this game does not have a larger modding community.
all we have for solid mods for this game is the Global Mod (with the 2.0 that came out earlier this year). And that is it.
It comes with a a whole lot, including cut weapons/vehicules, a new mission and some extra minor stuff (like bug fixes and QoL stuff).
But I really wish we could've gotten much more, seeing the concept art of the DLC they had in mind is srs heart breaking.
I never understood why Pandemic Studios dissolved. They made a lot great games back in the 2000s. Destroy All Humans 1 & 2, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, Star Wars frickin Battlefront 1 & 2, Saboteur. Whatever happened was not due to their lack of trying or output.
Last I checked the reason was because of the amount of games they were making and a few of the games they released were not as great as Mercenaries or battlefront plus pandemic was a pretty small company so even having 2 projects at once being worked on greatly reduced progress. It doesn’t help that EA at the time were buying and shutting down competition I so wish we could get a Mercenaries 3 or the saboteur 2 in a different country.
@@cammykunn1263From what an interview came around. The reason EA shut down pandemic was because they didn't have any interest in phone games, which was their focus in 2009
I’ve been mentioning this game to friends for years trying to meet someone who remembered it, I love it
It is one of those games you can just never forget.
This game took a new perspective of WW2 by making you just a normal civilian, rebelling against Nazi controlled France. It was such a great game. Wish it would be remastered or just rereleased for consoles
Idk about ‘normal’, or even ‘civilian, but agreed.
"If you're anything like me... well, first of all - sorry" 🤣
Playing this game currently. Totally agree with u.
I just finished the game a couple of weeks ago, was probably one of the best games ive played so far, the story, the gameplay, the map, everything just felt so good.
I also havent encountered any bugs or so apart from a random german truck launching itself into the stratosphere
There's one checkpoint where a tank is just randomly rotating vertically for some reason.
I liked this game a lot aside from one particularly annoying mission. Aside from that hiccup, it felt like what a closer to modern day assassin's creed could have beenlike.
Which mission?
For me it was attempting to steal some car only for the nearest Nazi to hop into it and drive off, considering cars don't take damage easily and there's no driving shooting mechanics he just drove around the block over and over again and couldn't be stopped.
@@Fizhy I was busting some guy out of prison, his ai bugged out a lot and just ran off when we got outside instead of getting in the car.
@@bravobird9435 I know which mission you mean, best way to avoid that is to make sure you blow up one of the two exits before you open the cage.
@@Fizhy oh right on, if I ever get a chance to play it again now I know what to do
@@Fizhyi tried for soo long to like "stealth" that mission.. like i really wanted to get that car by being the one to get in it an drive away myself from where its parked without any enemies shooting the car.. the best i could do was a short like 10 second fire fight then drive away in the vehicle. I think its most likely impossible to do that mission with out being caught/seen. My most difficult mission was the very first time trial race. It was like soo hard for me i tried definitely over 15 times. I made a short vid on my channel of it. Was playing on the fekn hard difficulty not sure if that changes the time limit.
This is one of my favorite open world games from that era. So unique. It's heavily underrated that's for sure!
My favorite game of my life, and Crysis trilogy but saboteur is special
Underrated game
Absolutely
Ah I remember buying this game from my local pawn shop for 3 dollars back in 2017. I had just moved out and hadn't set up internet in my apartment yet, so story missions were my go to. I loved it. Although it's a little clunky, but it was made with love, just like this video!
Thank you Fizhy! ❤
Thank you for watching!
This game was released when I was 9. Still my favourite one, such a lovely game. Thank you for the video ❤
I grew up on this game, and I only recently finished it a few days ago after getting a PS3 again and finding my old copy of the game. This game will always be so close to my heart, if The Saboteur has zero fans I’m dead.
This was a Great Game ahead of its time while going hard into the times of action adventure games. Just a fun off beat game that deserved more eyes on it!
They could really make an AC game like this play halfway decent. The gunplay has to be perfect though.

i just started playing the saboteur again. it was like reuniting with an old friend. i spent a prodigious amount of time on this game back in the ps3 days. funny how the controls felt totally normal then but having been blessed with ps5 controls they feel really janky now. still a lot of fun to jam a metric fuck ton of explosive up their arses though.
hey does anyone else get 5g tower vibes when they look at the games watch towers looming in the distance? maybe thats why i hate those damn towers so much.
I never did finish this game. Perhaps I now will.... 🤔
If you haven't played it already, Fizhy, a game that I feel would leave you with the exact same feeling you had here is 2009's Brutal Legend. Definitely unique. Understandbale criticisms, but still hiighly underrated. And definitely one that could have been so much more if it had a sequel.
Never played that, I'll give it a look over.
I only discovered this game by finding some gameplay of it on UA-cam a few years ago. I'm surprised I never knew it existed back in the day, especially since I was playing lots of forgotten GTA clones at the time, like the Godfather games and Scarface: The World is Yours.
I jist finished this game fir the first time a week ago or so..... was very very pleasantly surprised. Super hard game at times tho.
The saboteur was and still is one of my favorite games. A true masterpiece
I still have my PC copy of it! I've traded in tons of games in my time (when you could still trade in PC games) but I'll never give away my copy of Saboteur. Loved it when 'Feelin' Good' blasted through on the car radio and telling the nazi's they weren't worth a feckin air biscuit. First game I consciously remember beating then immediately played again from the start. Brilliant fun, I wonder if it still runs on Windows 11!
It does hahaha I ran it a few times on my win 11 before (till I reverted to win10 😂 but ye it does)
This game deserves a faithful remake. Meaning, keep the original story, voice acting and dialogue, and music, but enhance the gameplay to modern controls and of course the graphics. Like the original Mafia game or the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta, Snake Eater. I’m playing through it right now off of Steam on my Steam Deck, and Love it.
it was so long since i last played the game that i was thinking that it was lost media or a false memory. Thankfully i was able to find it again and i am really enjoying it
Ah yes, the naked DLC game
The game is ruthless with its nudity if you select that option
I’ve never in my life seen or heard of this game lol. But it looks interesting.
I loved this game. Played it on PC. It was such a fun/solid game.
Hey, Bloodlines is getting a sequel. From a different company.
I'm not entirely sure the studio is up to the task, but it's getting a sequel.
If THAT old thing is getting a sequel, then, you never know, the Saboteur may get one.
My absolute favorite game of all time. 😢
This is, by far, one of my favorite games I played when I had the PS3. I didn't think much of it when I bought it. It was cheap and the setting was in World War II Paris. The art style looked good too so I took a chance on it. And I'm glad I did. I loved this game so much I let a friend borrow it after I finished the story. The atmosphere just brings you closer and makes you really feel you're part of the world that Sean's in. The sound design is good and the music really sets the tone. I do like the black and white feel like you're in a film noir type environment and once liberated you can feel life once again come back to that district/area. The controls at times are a little wonky but not horrible, it was easy to control nonetheless. I even like the small details they did such as if you go into the settings you have the option to remove the profanity and Sean replies to this and turning it off he does the same. It's a shame this game didn't get the recognition it deserves nor a sequel. It kind became like LA Noire with Team Bondi.
Like Freedom Fighters this is an absolute classic game and one that has stood the test of time, in fact was way ahead of its time shame a sequal wasnt made.
There was supposed to be a Franziska boss fight at the end of the stage where you first encounter the terror squad but it was cut.
It reminds me of Epic Mickey and how you can paint everything to looks nice and how Mickey is bringing life to a forgotten world he almost destroyed
Sean Devlin i miss you
Great video! What are the background' songs names?
I’ve told people for years, this game is the unknown best game ever made
Actually, enjoyed this game on the PS3
Oh yes. One of the coolest game that remained unfinished. Those who played it know what I'm talking about.
Honestly would love to see this game be made into a remake.
Hello fizhy, thanks for this. I always thought this game wasn't recognised enough, I was surprised and excited to see you make a video on it. Have you played the prototype series (1&2), a revisit on that would be interesting.
Only ever played a bit of Prototype 1, but the Saboteur is a game I really liked and did play when I was younger so I felt it was worthy of a throwback for that reason.
why did you change your tone in the middle of the video
Probably bollocks went back inside
I didn’t realise this was a new video! Either way it’s great timing as I just started playing the game again yesterday hahaha.
This is one of my favourite games - I would still play it if it was backwards compatible. I remember finishing it and then went on to do all the mini missions on the countryside.
what is the name of the song used in this video?
I clicked on this video with the belief it was gonna be based on the Alfred Hitchcock film with the same name about conspiracy and elites, yet was even more fortunate to learn it was actually a video game about a crazy Irish man (I’m Irish) as the main character.
Looks good to me never heard of this game
They did use the liiknes of Billy Zane because it looks like him
Man I Wish i had more time playing games ...
one of my favourites
Cool, hearted lesssss goooo :)
9 year old me vibed with this game so much
Bought it for 15 dollars at walmart after asking another customer if they had heard of it.
It was fun, stylish and anti-fascist. There was also Burlesque. What's not to like?
I had this game and it was soooo underrated
for sure
an Actual quick retrospective?! nice
I loved this game!!! I wish i can find my copy to play it again
Thanks so much! This game is criminally underrated!❤
I love this game. Its amazing.
havent even watched yet. True title
Fizhy would love to hear your opinion about the new AC samurai game
I'll come up with something for it I'm sure.
This was great. I miss it
This was one of my favourites back in the day
The characters remind me of Arkham city.
Should do a video on Velvet Assassin 🤔
For what it's worth, this game can be pretty enjoyable. It's a "GTA clone" in a setting that I absolutely love and am quite frankly surprised has not gotten more attention, and it gives you plenty of crap to sabotage (shocking, I know) while free-roaming with multiple different ways to do it. With that being said, it's hard to ignore its flaws looking back on it years later, chief of which I think is the "wanted" system, because it's incredibly easy to lose the pursuing Nazis. I wanted to be able to steal a motorcycle and have a Steve McQueen, "The Great Escape"-esque chase across the countryside, but unfortunately you can lose the Germans in seconds if you're in a vehicle. Fix that, as well as the vehicle handling/damage and make the radios toggleable, and you have something eons better with a few minor changes. I also wish they had tried a bit harder to make the uniforms and equipment more historically accurate, but I get they were also going for a bit of a super villain/Wolfenstein vibe too. It would have been cool if your actions had consequences too, such as the Nazis rounding up civilians to murder (you'd be able to save them) if you sabotaged too much stuff in a short period of time like what happened in real life.
Anyone else got problem to start the game? I got it from Origin but it won’t run
Origin is defunct. It's called the EA app now. Should work if you run it through that. (I went through the same thing with my copy of Mirror's Edge)

BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOU MADE A VIDEO ABOUT AC INNIT
And not long until I publish one
I've never heard of this until now
I recommend it
Reminds me of Red Faction.
Think I played a Red Faction game once
Who has the bigger TARDIS in their satchel - Sean Devlin or Arthur Morgan?
Arthur Morgan's satchel is endless in its depth and its girth
@@Fizhy Who doesn’t love a bit of Arthur Morgan’s depth and girth? 👀
I never got to play this one.😭
Not fancying retroactively giving it a go?
@@Fizhy Would love too, it's not in the PS Store though.
@@MikefromTexas1 yeah I think the only viable way to play it now would be to either own a PS3/Xbox 360 or to play on PC.
Yoo
It hurts when you mention a sequel being impossible..
Hey broski
greetings
Saboteur took everything Destroy All Humans 1 and 2 had and greatly improved on it especially with the story and gameplay but janky havok vehicles ruin the game and i thought Destroy All Humans 1 and 2 saucer physics were bad
really fun game! unfortunately gotta disagree on it being the hardest sequel bait. Prey, the first one on the 360, had the most depressing cliffhanger, bullshit ending! it basically was just a 'to be continued...'. whenever they finally got back to it, they did NOT continue. still mad about that
Saboteur just got blown out by Assassin's Creed II. which sucks cause it's a better Assassin's Creed game than ASII, and it has cool race cars that go WAY too fast with boobs!
Had he not been Irish he would’ve surly died. The Irish are just built different. 🗿💪🍀
