  • I am back with my K40 Laser project. Today i want to try if i could engrave logo´s onto cylindrical objects without the use of a rotary attachment.
Sure having a 3rd axis installed gives you a perfect result but i want to know if it is possible to engrave with only the X and Y axis the K40 Laser came with.
Also if you are interested into the K40 and the rotary attachment, this video should give you some great insights into the K40 Laser, the laserbed and depht of the machine.
I try to engrave onto several diameters of tubes, engraving the same logo in 3 sizes to see at what point it starts to visually distort.
All my gathered data can be downloaded for FREE on my webpage, for you as a guide. Sure i can´t guaranty that this table will work for you, but for me it does and
it gives you some waypoints of engraving onto cylindrical objects without the use of the rotary axis.

I hope you enjoy this K40 Laser cutter related video!
    Disclaimer:
Even it looks fun of making those experiments i am far away when operating the laser and not even look at the machine when it is operating! The invisible coherent infrared laser light reflected off the working materials can be dangerous to your eyelight! You should never operate the K40 Laser with the lid open!

Mancave Effects, going where others dare not! Great fun, thanks.

So did you have to use the arrow buttons like you said and move the angle of the laser while it was burning or did you just set it and let it engrave with fixed position?

Love this experiment, thanks. Wondering how you decide where to locate the laser to start the burn, did you use 1/2 the logo size? Curious as the start appears to be better than the finish in cases when it didn't finish well. On my list of things to try 👍

I used the target laser and eyeballed it, i tried to set the starting point as far to the edge as possible

can you tell me if I can use a K40 unit to engrave an 8mm logo on a 10mm pen barrel without a rotary attachment?

Should work, but i would use a metal pen and burn off the coating instead of a plastic pen

would be cool if you could distort the image in a way by telling the software the diameter of your cylinder.
Laser being out of of focus is one thing but preparing the image by distorting it would solve the major issues.

    where you get the rotary?

No rotary on this video as it says in the title ;)

Will you make a video where you install a rotary ? And show us how to install it and how to works?.

For now UA-cam again suppresses my videos, so at this point i wont take the risk to invest to much money into new equipment. But as soon as i will recieve a work order where it is needed i will get me one and sure make a video about it! :)

Thank you for your updates, I'm Francesco (66old years) :-)) I lost the SUNA -SA-K dongle Can you help me? Thank you

If you use the K40 Whisper softwre you don't need the dongle.

So, rule of thumb- you can do etchings of 40% of diameter

    • @MancaveEffects
      @MancaveEffects  5 років тому

Yes and no, you will always have minor distortion and it matters if your logo contains straight vectors and lines or if it has more organic lines but yes 40% should be acurate.

Very informative, excellent experiment. But you’re avoid the real question, we’re any pringles hurt in the making of this video? 😂. Kidding! Thank you, I actually made my rotary after a few wine glass fails

He uses green goggles to protect his eyes which if are not polycarbonate will do nothing to protect him since the green goggles are for blue diode lasers and not for the 10.6μm wave length a CO2 laser uses so has only a false sense of security.

I made a seperate video about that. I use the green 804-1400 glasses for playing arround and demonstrating things with my green laser pointer. However i do not trust any of the safety glasses and leave the room when using the K40 with open lid or put in a sheet of plywood between me and the laser to at least avoid direct infrared reflections.
