The fact he played solo shows with John Kahn is a testament to Jerry’s greatness and loyalty. Kahn deserves much more than he’s remembered for. He was an important influence is his life and he has some amazing performances .

Lucky to have lived near Hartford. Rough voice and sloppy at times. But this is what hooked me on Jerry. What sound coming out of that guitar by one man. Improv that reminds of Jazz artists doing the same. High on H and letting the music flow.

@halcolombo6380 no I mostly mean dead shows. But there’s nothing wrong with this show. Jerry had a shaky voice but other than that it’s solid. John kahn was Jerry’s smack buddy. So I would think Jerry’s fully doped out at jgb shows more so than dead shows. But I don’t know what I’m talking about and that’s just my opinion. I’m probly wrong

I grew up in Hartford. At the time of this performance I was 14 years old and a little inner city hoodlum. Iirc it was only a week or two after this show that I attended the last The Nutcracker Suite at the Bushnell(for me). I didn’t get into alcohol/drugs until the following June while also getting into heavy metal music. It wasn’t until 88 that I reluctantly got into the Dead and Jerry Garcia. I say “reluctantly” because I really did not want to like the Dead as many of my friends(the ones from West Hartford) were getting into them, but I borrowed several tapes from one of them so that I could make copies for myself and to really give this music a chance. Most of the tapes weren’t the greatest quality recordings, but one in particular stood out. It was the May 77 Cornel show, and what specifically converted me into a full blown Deadhead was Scarlet Begonias>Fire! Yup, that did it. I later would see Dead shows at Nassau Coliseum, and Highgate Vermont. Also saw a JGB concert at the Hartford Civic Center in November of 91… Ah, Hartford, it’s been 29 years and 1 week since I’ve left - “all the years combine, they melt into a dream”

I'm not gonna say Hendrix is over-rated, its impossible to call someone Number 1, but Garcia is just a better and more versatile musician with a setlist and live performance history that just can't be matched. Hendrix was just churning out studio out-takes his last year, and the Dead continued to write great lyrics, new melodies, and then merged into a jazz phase and all of Jerry's acoustic and duo things in the 80's.
