He was as Jesuit Missionary and court painter from Milan for the Qing in the mid 18th century. Like much of the rest of the summer palace it was destroyed. Very sad, but also poetic that a palace designed by a European in China, intended as a fusion of the two cultures, should meet its end in a war that drove them further apart.

Also, I think there's simply a factor of institutional experience with a weapons system: the British had well over a century's experience with using guns, cannons, etc. in warfare. The Chinese were johnny-come-lately, and even if they HAD the tools they didn't necessarily know how to use them effectively.
It was technically only the new territories that had the 99 year lease. Kowloon and Hong Kong island were held in perpetuity. But were given back together cos it be too much hassle.
