    A cool thing about Hendrix is the effect he had on the "hot shot" guitarists of his day. If you listen to Jeff Beck before Hendrix and after Hendrix you'll see how Jimi's influence turbocharged Beck's virtuosic vocabulary ascension. Not to take anything away from Beck, as he's one of the few "old gods" who has never rested on his laurels, but continued to chart new paths on the instument.
    Luckily for us scrubs nowadays, we have awesome guitar nerds like Eric to hold us by the hand and spoon feed us these delicious morsels. THANKS dude.

    Someone wrote an article a while back about the "best" way to hold a plectrum. It was one of those quasi-scientific accounts that's interesting but doomed on the fact that we're all different shapes! Anyway, he concluded that in terms of stability in the fingers, energy transference etc that low-slung Hendrix thing was the "best". He also noted that George Benson does it, and I think sometimes Santana too. I can't!

      Also, I've noticed the "normal" channel is way fatter/smoother for pedals. There's a firmware update for the tonemaster that takes the virtual bright cap out of the vibrato channel, but I couldn't get it to open the .zip file. Fuggin' computers.

    Eric: Another super cool lesson! Say, I've been dabbling with doing some home recording on my new 50's Fender Tele and original 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb. I've got a cool little setup using a Shure 57 mic tight to the grill cloth and centered on the speaker cone and going thru a focusrite 2i2 interface to my Mac. Anyway, looking for some recording tips...a) how far are you sitting in front of your mic'd amp...looks to be somewhere around 6-10'? b) I like my amp with some reverb (~2-3) but have heard its best to record dry. Any thoughts w/r/t reverb and other effect on the front end vice adding effects during the mix? Thanks!!!!

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  3 роки тому

      So many thoughts!
      First - get a cheap ribbon mic and a cloudlifter. You will be AMAZED at how much more real it sounds than the icy crispness of the sm57.
      Second - I almost never put my mics right on the grill. I'm about 2-3 inches away aimed just off center of the speaker cone. With digital recording, you don't need all that spiky high end.
      Third - YES! Reverb in post. I use Valhalla Vintage Verb - it's a $50 plugin and you hear it in ALL my vids. It's a huge part of the Haugen™ sound!

      @@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks so much Eric! Will definitely look to order a cheap ribbon mic and place slightly offset at 2-3" away from grill cloth/speaker cone center. The onboard reverb on my orig 65' Deluxe is soooo awesome but I hear ya...add reverb post. Will so check out the Valhalla Vintage Verb plugin! Can't wait to try!!! Thank you again Eric!!! Will keep ya posted!

      @@EricHaugenGuitar Gotcha....will check it out. At the end of this I'll post a UA-cam link using your backing track to your Knopler/Chicken Picken lesson that I've been messing with the last few days. Okay, #1) I'm a hack...closet guitar player but just love to try to learn stuff. 2) Video quality is bad...already working on getting a better camera & lighting. 3) I recorded my guitar twice on two separate tracks and married together to try to sync up to extend possible #4) I had my amp reverb on about 2.5 upfront - will strip out reverb in front henceforth. Did pan each guitar track (L/R to 9 and 3 o'clock positions. 5) Did add some compression and I think some reverb post. All in all, I think its okay...but (to me) its probably way too over produced/mixed...I think that the right interpretation. I'm gonna strive for watching one of my little vid's and having it nicely complement the music as far as looking like it all looks and sounds natural - not how my current video looks which I think is "too digital", if that's the correct. I know your super busy so clearly no obligation to respond unless you like. I'm gonna try your reco's and try again and try to improve both in playing and recording. :)

    I'm afraid this is outside my wheelhouse. I don't play with a pick, so my fingernails are mostly upstrokers and my thumb (flesh, not nail) is a downstroker. I sometimes do downstrokes with my index fingernail, but it gives a different tone, and I have to be careful because if any of my fingertip flesh catches on the way by, I get artificial harmonics.

      1) The light (when it cooperates) is best in there
