Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I have to ask...what happened to your American Original strat? This one looks like it, and I thought it was it, until you mentioned it was a Mexican strat. Good lesson...made me spend some time refreshing these skills.
Happy new year Peter! This is the same MIM strat that I've had for a year or two - never had an American Original! I've got that old Black Squier Strat too, but that's at my buddy's house now :-)
I didn't have a teacher when I was a kid and learned only from magazines and watching MTV. My grandfather was a great player but mostly played bluegrass, early rock n' roll, and a little Texas swing, and he was such a natural player that he wasn't a very good teacher. Anyway, I got it in my head that bending up to a vibrato was done with the trem bar so that's what I used. It worked most of the time but was a terrible crutch, and it took a long time to get that straightened out. I'm still not happy with bending up and doing a vibrato all these years later, to be honest. It's like I have slumps, and I have to be warmed up to pull it off. Bending up and hitting the intended pitch is one of those things that separates a good player from a mediocre one, for sure. It takes a lot of practice when starting out.
That’s definitely a cool way to do it and I would never tell someone to not do something that sounds good - the ends justify the means! But yeah, for classic vibrato+bends I think it’s done with the wrist/forearm
@@EricHaugenGuitar I think I saw Gilmour doing it during a video of a live show when I was a kid, and some hair metal players, too, would do it as sort of an effect. Like kind of a wider, machine-like vibrato. You can make it sound more natural with a really light touch, particularly with a Strat, which was all I had back in those ancient times. It's weird how we get certain ideas in our heads when starting out. When I first started trying to do it the right way, it seems so impossible. I should have started earlier when everything seemed impossible.

Hey Eric! Love your lessons! I’m at a point where I can follow you while I play. Great way of learning! So thanks! I was curious. Have you delved into Santana’s playing before? It would be cool to see a lesson focusing on his style of playing. I find him very melodic and really plays the song. Kind of like when you talk about chords. Where there’s a chord and time to dwell on a chord. He seems to take advantage of that and put interesting melodies on top. Anyways keep up the great GREAT work!!! 😊😊😊
I should book private lessons with you. It seems like every YT video of yours addresses something I struggle with. Okay, if I'm being honest, I struggle with every aspect of guitar, but you get my point.
Great lesson, that strat sounds incredible. I've always struggled with index finger vibrato doing it that way. I seem to find my wrist won't work with vibrato. Its seems OK with 3 fingers doing it that way. So I've ways done the Clapton 1 finger waggle way.
Yeah everyone’s a little bit different! There’s definitely not a one size fits all technical rulebook - we all work around our limitations! For me, I actually have very squishy/soft fingertips. It’s part of the reason I’m kinda slow - to make good contact with the fretboard I have to squeeze harder than someone with stiff fingertips!
That's been useful to practice this weekend. How about a follow-up video on using vibrato at the top of a bend? My wrist doesn't want to do the work there. Just shaking the guitar for vibrato.
Eric, I have a question: what is the benefit of stopping a bend with your pick when you can lift your finger up at the end of the bend on your left hand? Hope that makes sense. Love the videos, keep it up.
I just compared the two - if you lift your finger, you'll always hear a little bit of the note falling down, which leads to that "dying cat" sound. By decisively stopping the string with the pick, you get a crisp, aggressive end. CHOP!
BB King never held on to the neck with his vibrato, and he has quite possibly the best technique of any blues player. His vibrato was super tight and had very even oscillation flat and sharp. There is no "wrong" way. We all play differently based on hand shape and dexterity.
Pretty sure that’s the Walrus Monument. It’s a harmonic trem. It’ll split the signal and one half is going up while the other is going down. Kinda chewy.
I finally founds something that I’m good at that you teach!!! Of course my bends could use work always but it Is the thing I’m most good at or maybe proud of in my style. Hey if you see this how bout you do a live stream? It’d be a way for us and you to really touch base man
I don't know how other channels do it! It's actually VERY TECHNICALLY challenging to stream in HD with guitars and mics - I have no one here to help me set it up
Talk of some people don’t like strats..... I can never seem to get a tone I’m happy with on mine. On my blues JR no less. Actually I’m ok with the clean but I can’t seem to get a broken up tone that I like. So anyway I’m ordering a Dylan Talks Tone P90 that looks like a single coil. I’m just doing 1 for now. He suggested if I only pick one I do the bridge. Here’s hoping. Eric’s tone is fantastic here. Anyway wish me luck on the P90.
Any tips on practicing keeping an accurate bend when adding vibrato at the top of the bend? Mine tends to fail out resulting in dying animal sound. Gets better if I really add pressure with thumb and that anchor knuckle. Is that the key - death grip or should I be practicing something else? Hendrix string set helped a bunch, but how would you practice building hand strength to keep that from fading flat? Would a Slow metronome and a tuner help?
Ok - I've got my strat in my lap as I type this: The fingers do move a little bit - it's sorta a compound motion where the wrist does most of the work, but the fingers have a tiny bit of wiggle to them also. Hrmmmm tricky to explain. Kinda like how a pitcher throws a knuckleball. They can do it, but if you ask them how, they can't explain it.
Hey Eric! Would you ever consider teaching any sort of Frank Zappa improvisational techniques? I think it could be really interesting. Thank you, love the lessons :)
It’s so hard to change habits! For some reason when I say “Wisconsin” my brain wants to say “Wisconstin” - i know it’s wrong, but for some reason the brain has decided that.
Yeah! It's the Weber Mini Mass - a great little box that costs as much as a pedal and can tame any amp up to 50w! They're outta stock right now but I highly recommend anyone with a tube amp but some kind of attenuator!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks!! I agree, and you might appreciate that I had it modded to replace the 5-way switch with a 3-way, and swapped push pots out for the tone knobs. I can play all 3 pups at once, or tweak the highs and mids real squonky 😁 I’m #31 on the list for my Phred Guitars “Liger”, hopefully with the MIDI added. Whoo.. can’t wait. 🎸🔥
Medium! Sometimes students complain that their hands are too small, but I don’t think it matters as much as they say - the power comes from the forearm!
@@EricHaugenGuitar That’s true, I think it only matters a little for how you finger certain chord shapes. Been jealous long fingered guys like Nels Cline lately so I guess I was studying yours a little closer this time.
Hey Eric! Can you perhaps do a video or at least point me in the right direction for how you do that sweep technique at 6:43? It's very subtle but sounds killer. Thanks, and as always great video!
Bending and vibrato are deceptively difficult ... but if you get it, you don't have to play as many notes and that's when that sucker sings ... or wails ... or screams. Cheers.
Very disappointed you never mentioned the key technique about bending even though it's clearly visible that you're using it. Facial expression is *key*. Each note you're bending to has a different facial expression associated with this, and will in fact vary depending on the speed of the bend. 4th to 5th slow bend? Happy expectation face. Slow bend to a blues note? Evil surprise. Getting these right is just as important as getting the right notes!

BB King never held on to the neck with his vibrato, and he has quite possibly the best technique of any blues player. His vibrato was super tight and had very even oscillation flat and sharp. There is no "wrong" way. We all play differently based on hand shape and dexterity.
What do you play at @4:14? I wanna hear more of that!
Nice one
How did you get that great Univibe tone? Didn’t see it listed in the sound tools. Thanks great video!
Pretty sure that’s the Walrus Monument. It’s a harmonic trem. It’ll split the signal and one half is going up while the other is going down. Kinda chewy.
That’s the walrus audio harmonic tremolo - very similar to a univibe, but just a little bit less warbly
Wow crazy! Can it do a Leslie type sound as well? Thanks
I don't think so - check out Pete Thorn's demo - he does a good job going through all the sounds: ua-cam.com/video/ze1Bm3hfGUM/v-deo.html
@@EricHaugenGuitar thanks so much. Happy holidays!
Hey man, I dig your playing style.
Thanks man!
I finally founds something that I’m good at that you teach!!! Of course my bends could use work always but it Is the thing I’m most good at or maybe proud of in my style.
Hey if you see this how bout you do a live stream? It’d be a way for us and you to really touch base man
I don't know how other channels do it!
It's actually VERY TECHNICALLY challenging to stream in HD with guitars and mics - I have no one here to help me set it up
Hi bro why Clapton's vibrato is a floating one? You think it creates a different sound?
It sure does! All types of string movement are useful - basically, anything we can do to make our guitar more vocal is a good idea :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar thanks bud. Btw I enjoy all your videos...are excellent! 💪
The pick-catch is a Dave Gilmour trick on the solo for the Pink Floyd song, Money.
Aha yes! I know exactly the lick you're talking about!
That ping pong effect in the intro nearly gave me a brain aneurysm. I was not expecting that.
You can’t go wrong with any sort of p90!
A good light overdrive goes a long way in getting the start to growl - as always, I love my strymon deco
Yeah!
Hey Eric!
Would you ever consider teaching any sort of Frank Zappa improvisational techniques?
I think it could be really interesting.
Thank you, love the lessons :)
Hrmmmm good idea! He certainly has his own thing going on!
I'm doing it all wrong, and my brain will be a jerk as I try to do it right. The best instructors teach the hardest lessons.
It’s so hard to change habits!
For some reason when I say “Wisconsin” my brain wants to say “Wisconstin” - i know it’s wrong, but for some reason the brain has decided that.
Great, thanks! Btw, even though everybody talks about them, you gotta do a Slash & Izzy lesson, you know you want it.
Yes!
Izzy is so important! He's the guy that wrote the songs - and the loose way he played was so integral to the groove!
@@EricHaugenGuitar yeah, such an overlooked player, very hard to nail his playing, a bit like Bonehead from Oasis, nobody gets it like they do.
Is that an attenuator on the floor next to the amp?
Yeah!
It's the Weber Mini Mass - a great little box that costs as much as a pedal and can tame any amp up to 50w!
They're outta stock right now but I highly recommend anyone with a tube amp but some kind of attenuator!
My Robert Cray Hardtail MexiStrat approves this video 😊🎸🔥
Oh yeah those are GREAT strats
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks!! I agree, and you might appreciate that I had it modded to replace the 5-way switch with a 3-way, and swapped push pots out for the tone knobs. I can play all 3 pups at once, or tweak the highs and mids real squonky 😁 I’m #31 on the list for my Phred Guitars “Liger”, hopefully with the MIDI added. Whoo.. can’t wait. 🎸🔥
Something I learned late in the game. But at least I made it. AC/DC will make you figure it out.
Never a bad idea to work on AC/DC licks!
You got big fingees or little fingees? I feel like it's really important on this stuff.
Ah yes they call that the “rake” - definitely a classic blues move. I haven’t searched but I’m sure there’s vids about it!
You are a great guitarist mate but what about songs have you written any or just or just olay the 🎸
Dozens of records, man!

Is that an ac15 head?
Yeah!
Haven't heard "halfsies" in a long time.
Hahahaha I LOVE the office - watched it so many times
you rule Eric - i'm looking forward to booking on early 5am skype lesson with you at some point
hrmm that makes me wonder are you in New Zealand? I teach a nice guy from over there!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Australia! thanks for the videos
Aha! I've got some friends in Melbourne! Enjoy the relative normalcy for us here in the States!
Bending and vibrato are deceptively difficult ... but if you get it, you don't have to play as many notes and that's when that sucker sings ... or wails ... or screams. Cheers.
Yes! Articulation always beats shredding, for me at least
Reaffirming the point that practice makes permanent. Practice it wrong and you will always do it wrong, speaking from experience
So true!
We can never let ourselves off the hook with sloppy habits - that's where the slowing down comes in.
@@EricHaugenGuitarHappy New Year Eric.
and once we have drilled it into our minds the wrong way its 10 times as hard to learn it correctly
Everyone can solder. Its like guitar, all it takes is practice
👍😎❤🖖

Cheers Richard!

So crucial!
