Virtue is the path to happiness. St. Thomas thinks that happiness is not so much a feeling or an emotion, nor is it something that just happens to us - rather, he argues that it is the activity of living a human life well, by which we attain what is truly good for us.
Virtue and Happiness (Aquinas 101) - Fr. Dominic Legge, O.P.

This wisdom is EXACTLY what all peoples need to learn and practice
Thanks! Cheers!
This concept changed my life. Ordering my actions towards an ultimate goal; whereas before, I pursued happiness in a subjective and sort of nihilstic way. I cannot articulate it very well, but I mean to say that the Classical-Christian mindset gave me clarity and purpose.
That's great news!
Of course it did. God bless you.
Thank you for your comment. We can be swayed by what you call nihilism or existential nothingness. The age of enlighten ment did influence this.
What you are learning here is the transenting to the eternal accuation of happiness.
Christ Peace to you.
Aquinas is medieval btw.
I agree about what was said about happiness but I think virtue ethics are a little outdated.
St. Thomas Aquinas pray for us.
Pax Christi.
Amen!
Glad that a new series of Aquinas101 is beginning!
We are too! It is thanks to the many people who donated to make this series possible!
The role of faith in our lives is to help us attain our most beautiful being as an offering to our Creator. Thank you Fr. for speaking on this subject... so much needed in our times.
Very kind of you to say!
Happiness is a choice and a decision! Gautama Buddha
Thank you Aquinas 101, may God bless you!
This series should rightfully be termed, "Aquinas 102," because this Lesson 1 starts a new and elevated study relative to Aquinas 101.

@Thomist in a Teapot sorry. Face to face.
Why would UA-cam block notifications for this kind of videos? Who could be harmed for a bite of good theology?
That should be fixed. Thanks!
@@ThomisticInstitute the matter seams to be that because the content IS for children, notifications are off... Am I getting it right?
This is true wisdom, truly good video. Thanks so much.

Stay tuned: more medieval wisdom for modern life is coming soon...
Thank You...

Thank you! You're clear as a bell.
Very good and useful talk.
Drugs, Divorce, Committing suicide.... so many people are in troubles today because they are ignorant of Virtues and Morality. And above all, LIFE AFTER DEATH.
Such a beautiful , important video to note n important knowledge to seek, regarding ,choosing true happiness. Relating to God himself is true happiness,so seeking what lifestyle is best for us n then seek it. Worldly happiness is fleeting, but following God in all we do brings true happiness. It is peace.
Such a lovely video Thanks; pointing us in the right direction, on this earthly journey,I pray to be on that path to Jesus ,seeking wisdom ,en route.
Yay for happiness! 👏
Brilliant. Thank you so much. 🙏
You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord bless you!
So much in our culture today is muddied by word meanings that are not specific or congruent with scripture. This content is correct about the ultimate end of mandking being God, but is that not joy (supernatural happiness) rather than the fleeting and false notion of happiness that the world associates with sin? The Lost pursue happiness and niceness, whereas the Faithful pursue Joy and Kindness.
Amen. Here's a passage from St. Thomas about spiritual joy, which is an effect of that love which unites us to God: "There can be spiritual joy about God in two ways. First, when we rejoice in the Divine good considered in itself; secondly, when we rejoice in the Divine good as participated by us. The former joy is the better, and proceeds from charity chiefly: while the latter joy proceeds from hope also, whereby we look forward to enjoy the Divine good, although this enjoyment itself, whether perfect or imperfect, is obtained according to the measure of one's charity." This is a random question, but one that has just come to mind. Not including Fr. Dominic Legge, I've noticed that two or three regular speakers on this channel have a scar on the left of their forehead. Is there any significance to this, perhaps related to Saint Dominic's baptism, or is it just coincidence?
That's news to us! No special significance.

Ethics = ETA = H.
H = Happiness.
To be ethical is to be happy.
The path to happiness is ethics.
What should you do? Ethics.
Only here cause of schol😢😢😅 principles of ethics
Fr Brett Brannen ( To Save a Thousand of Souls)
A virtuous life should spring naturally from a life of prayer and intimacy with Jesus. A man should be conscious of his sins and bothered by them. He should be trying very hard to live out the supernatural virtues infused at his Baptism: faith, hope, and charity; and to develop the intellectual virtues of prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude.
From the book
"To Save a Thousand Souls"
Reminds me of Jordan Peterson.
Yes, I think you're right: Jordan Peterson has hit upon some of the same insights as St. Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas is one of the all-time greats on this subject!
@@ThomisticInstitute One way they are similar and in the other they are not. Peterson for instance speaks of happiness as a bad goal and substitutes it with the idea of meaning. I am wondering if these to concepts, namely happiness (not hedonistic) and meaning can be unified in thomism? What do you think?
I have not 'read' the Bible, I am, on the other hand always reading the Bible.
How is this not deeply and at its core against Christian morality? I much prefer the Carmelite and even the Franciscan view on our final ethical end. To the point where I would be tempted to say the thomistic view is outright wrong, and unethical to hold, and live your life by. I'm well aware of the makarios/eudimonia/felicitas distinction from the modern use of happiness, you can define this experience with biblical language and as nobly, romantically, academically, or poetically as you want. It's still an ultimately entirely self-centered ethical end. It seems like this view doesnt stem from any sort of respectable philosophy, theology, or interpretation of revelation either. It seems like St. Thomas created this ethical theory from his extreme reliance on Aristotle and Augustine who were ethical egoists. I think this is why he called his work straw because it infiltrates the rest of his thought.
And that's why he says "Domine non nise te". He doesnt want Eudinomia anymore.
