    I love this series. My mind is raised higher. Praise God for blessing us with so many people who wish to lift our minds up towards the good, and by extension, towards God.

    I've returned to this video many times. The section regarding St. Thomas not being a stoic and how the virtuous person feels more deeply was a revelation for me. Would love to see that particular topic expanded upon.

    I'm astonished by the quality of Aquinas 101's videos. The animations, the rhetoric, the teachings... No wonder they cost so much to make! I've always steemed Dominicans very high, but you're just breathtaking! Truly inspiring.

    Thank you for this. I am writing a synthesis paper on ethics and my mind got refreshed on what am I missing both on the paper and the life itself. I'm ashamed that I'm losing touch in what is ethics really is without understanding the fundamentals of moral virtues.

    I wait to see justice for those standing for Truth right now in the US who are being slandered and persecuted.
    May they (we) hold through to the just end.
    I hope Truth overcomes darkness throughout society...

    Fr Gregory, brothers, so Virtue is allocated in the Intellect, and the informs the Will to moderate our Passions. Would that be a fair description?

    • @ThomisticInstitute
      @ThomisticInstitute  4 роки тому +4

      Virtues inhere in the intellect (wisdom, knowledge, understanding, art, prudence, faith), the will (justice, religion, piety, observance, gratitude, friendliness, vindication, truthfulness, liberality, hope, charity), and the passions/emotions (fortitude, magnanimity, magnificence, confidence, patience, perseverance, humility, temperance, abstinence, sobriety, chastity, modesty, etc.). So, in short, virtues are not in the body, but rather in the soul, specifically in its powers. You'll find this whole question to be helpful: aquinas101.thomisticinstitute.org/st-iaiiae-q-50#FSQ50OUTP1

      As what I have read from the Summa. Aquinas claims that our soul has 4 parts corresponding to the virtues proper to it.
      Intellect - Prudence
      Will - Justice
      Irascible Passions - Fortitude
      Concupiscible Appetites - Temperance
      That constitutes Cardinal Virtues. But these virtues cannot stand alone by itself because we need God's grace to perfect ourselves in practicing these virtues and to perfect our human nature since grace builds on nature. But theological/infused virtues are given to us by God by baptism to perfect our human nature.

    Any thoughts on where humility falls in all of this? I want to say it's not considered a cardinal or theological virtue, but I've heard it's considered the opposite of pride.

    • @tobiasgarabato5087
      @tobiasgarabato5087 4 роки тому +4

      In humans it falls under temperance because it regulates the immoderate and excessive desire of one's own excellence. For angels & demons, which only have intellect and will i guess it falls under justice whereby pride is some sort of injustice.
      God bless.

    Is not humility considered as the mother of all virtues, and probably the most important one?

    Those are the Four Stoic Virtues. Careful Father, saying Thomas was not stoic, he was very much an inheritor of Stoicism.

    I cannot adequately give voice to the endless well of hate and poison I will have even after my death for this kind of naivite. The complete lack of epistimological humility here deserves cluster bombs, agent orange, and firing squads.
    Authoritarians always scramble to make a zero sum game of virtue against the less empowered in their pursuit of virtue.
