Tim Ferriss' book gave me the same great advice when I first started in 2008. I asked myself, how long it would take to get back to my old shitty life if things didn't work out. Fast forward 14 years, i'm glad I made the move.
Hi Kevin. I took a leap of faith back in 2018 and moved to Thailand for the year with my wife and son and it was the best thing we ever did. We had to put all of the contents of our home into storage, organise multi-entry visas, and sort out online learning for our 11-year-old son. but we did it. I worked as an illustrator from the co working spaces in Chiang Mai and my wife taught English online to Chinese students. We had no idea if this experiment would work but it did in spades. We returned to our lives in Australia in 2019 with only the fondest memories of our time away. And to think if we'd hesitated two more years we would have missed out going because of the pandemic. As for your advice, I agree. Be organised, go with some savings locked away, but ultimately take that leap of faith and go. Thailand is the perfect soft landing for this sort of life change or experience.
I've been nomading for 7 yrs mostly via house sitting while teaching online. I say the same thing. "What's the worst that can happen? You have to go back?" OK but you did it and you have those experiences. I've lost too many people in my life way too early who had "plans". "We plan;God laughs". "Trust Your journey" and all those sayings. Keep inspiring!

Many would be so much happier if they'd just do it. The quality of your video is fantastic; it made me feel I was right there with you! Stay safe ... I pray for you often. Much love!
The new animation thingy with channel's name at the beginning is awesome👌. Thanks for the book and channel recommendations👍walking format video is nice.
Again good content, it's funny I left Ireland in march last year and headed to Thailand but decided to leave at the end of May due to the lockdown and headed to Florida for a couple of months. Then in August I hit Belgrade which is a great city full of good food and nightlife. I'm now in the UK and planning to enjoy the next 6 months and back to Thailand for at least 6 months. Yes I changed my business to a remote style. I'm 54 years old single and I struggle with the state of western values. Thanks Sean.
Good stuff, Kevin. Thanks for the mention and kind words. Really appreciate it. You're right. You need the courage to take that jump. But you can't fly if you don't leap. And the odds of crashing to the ground, assuming you're motivated, are almost nil. It was great to meet up and chat. Hope we can do that again some time!
Great video, Kevin! I get that question about costs as well and agree it's a difficult one to answer because we all have our differences with how we like to spend our money. I retired a couple years ago and have been doing periodic 3-4 week trips to various places around the world (currently in Argentine Patagonia) and loving it. But I'm inspired by you and others who have become long-term travelers because it's definitely the direction I want to go. Thanks for the inspiration and keep the great videos coming! Cheers!
Couldn't have liked the video more. Glad I found this channel. Interestingly, I've been watching Jason Fieber for about 1 year now, and I just discovered you. Cool to hear you mention him. Thanks for producing your content. Keep it up please.
Thanks Kevin, some great advice there. These walk about videos are definitely my favourite type. Good luck to anyone planning a long trip and thinking about taking the plunge. You won't regret it. Cheers

Trying to budget as a vanlifer staying in North America always depends on how much I’m traveling, where and when I’m traveling and soooo much more. Great walking video!
It is difficult to answer, take the military for example as you know you can have 2 E5's say both married 1 kid same age neither wife works one always asking for a few dollars one lives very nicely make the same exact pay. All depends on your lifestyle. My Appalachian hike coming up I don't want to share a room or stay in a hostel in an open room I will accept more cost to have a single room. Good info as usual my friend
I love the walk around videos. Your advice to take a sabbatical to try a new lifestyle is excellent advice. I worked in H.R. for twenty years and a one year gap on a resume is not a big deal these days.
You have a knack for uploading during morning coffee. Everyone should take a gap year. Even my accountant agreed when I met to discuss taxes. No one is promised tomorrow, make it happen. I suspect my gap year will become years, and when do I say I am retired? 😁 We’ll see how the near future goes. Thanks for the walk and talk. I think the format suits you.
@@30AndAWakeUp you look relaxed. In fact, you seemed to be more relaxed doing these types of videos than the others. Good explanation on your morning walk. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful opening! Love a morning walk! The questions are definitely impossible to have one answer that fits everyone. Too many variables. Luckily, I've got a handle on my situation (a teeny weeny handle on my teeny weeny budget). LOL Really enjoyed the walk, thank you! The format is great!
Great video. I am doing the small corrections technique. I recently took the step of going to part time work. I will slowly reduce my hours until I retire fully. People fear change. But I believe taking baby steps can help you overcome the fear.
Good stuff! Totally agree on how much it costs to do this life. I've done long term travel in my 20s, 30s, and 40s, and what I've found is that my values and priorities have changed over the years. I was fine with $4 hostels as a 20-something. During my 30s, I still enjoyed the hostel culture and the ability to meet/spend time with other travelers, so I still frequently stayed there, but in a single room. As a traveler in my 40s, I find the privacy of AirBnBs or hotels to be higher on my list of priorities. Clearly, my costs have escalated over the years, and I suspect that this is true for most. So I'd encourage people to get out there sooner rather than later - it's only going to get more expensive! The other thing I've done over the years to accommodate this lifestyle creep is switch up where I go - most of my 20s travel was in Europe. I did a lot of Central and South America in my 30s, and have spent much of my 40s travel in Southeast Asia. So even though my travel budget (roughly $50/day) is the same now as it was back in my 20s, I've been able to increase my standard of travel.
Yeah, being able to walk out of your apartment and get fresh greens and fruits for very reasonable prices is one of the pluses of living in SE Asia. Thanks for pointing this market out. I have walked all around the old city, but this market I never spotted.
Great video and info, Kevin. Thank you. I love how you live so simple yet with everything you need. I think that can only be accomplished in other Countries outside of the U.S. I do understand, though, that other Countries are even MORE EXPENSIVE than areas in the U.S. Oh, btw, I love your walks. Thanks for taking us along.
Kevin. First, we do like the walk-and-talk style videos. Second, we agree that there are too many variables to life to have a set price. Plus their are thousands of budget videos on YT to find one similar to your personal lifestyle to use as a reference. I'll check out Darren's channel but the ultimate goal is hitting 20yrs and getting this Army pension! Cheers 🤙

Few have the privilege to do what you and some other free souls do. Many want to break away from their daily grind, but cannot, for various reasons. As simple as it sounds to travel without worry, for many it'll be a dream.
I've seen so many people with so many situations out here doing this. Anyone can do it, they just have to come up with a plan and make it work. But I do understand that many don't actually want to do it, they are happy, they just want to live vicariously through others.

Kevin, thank you for your insight 🙏 When time permits, can you give me some pointers? 😁 I would appreciate it from someone like you. Currently in California where I grew up but I'm feeling like I'm ready to venture out. Life is getting too expensive here especially for those of us with the crappy jobs and Asia makes sense as far as getting more bang for your buck. I'm almost 40, have a bachelor's degree, and no serious debt. I've had my eyes on Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea, and Taiwan. Out of these countries which one would you recommend for someone that wants to find a place to possibly live long term? I don't mind getting a TEFL and teaching English for a while until I can figure out something else. Vietnam seems strict when it comes to extended stays, and Cambodia has less opportunities. Its worth mentioning, ideally a place where Americans are welcomed. I know we can't speak for everyone but in a general sense. I actually don't drink or party and I have no issue learning local customs and I'm open to learning a new language too to help myself acclimatize. I actually volunteered in Thailand in 2006 for half a year. I enjoyed my time there but definitely at the time it was hard to use English once I left the tourist areas. I'm sure much has changed since then. Would appreciate your advice when you have a chance thanks!
So I have only lived in Thailand, so I cant really speak to the long term livability of the other 4 countries you mentioned. The biggest consideration though, is visa requirements. I purchased a long term visa to Thailand, but there are other ways. So that would be my advice, research visa requirements on all of them and figure out which fits you better.
@@30AndAWakeUp Hi Kevin! That was solid advice thank you 🙏 I have a better idea now. I came across one of your comments actually in another video saying how people tend to dispute you on the notion of surviving off of 1k USD in Bangkok. If I remember correctly, you made that comment last year. Would you say that's still possible today? Mind you, I'm fine with an apartment in the $200-$300 range and I would eat only Thai food solely off the streets and markets because that's what I'm into anyway. Hope you're well! 🤙
Totally want to see more of the "turn on he can and wander" walkarounds. Was even better that you popped up on IG live, right after you filmed this, and took us on your walk back home.
@@30AndAWakeUp Great video...I'm already retired with savings/pension/dividends, but will check out the books you mentioned. Probably gift them to my kids. Enjoyed the walk around video, but keep the camera pointed outward more often.
I've been lucky enough to have an employer in the states that alots 6 weeks holiday pay. I've done 2 weeks here in a country, 2 weeks there and 2 weeks there every year. I love it. When I hit 59.5 years of age, ill take my savings and retire with it along with the company pension. Ill do 6 months out of the US and 6 months in. There's been a lot of negative news about the US these past few years. It has its issues but I still love it enough to not want to sell my home and never return but I'm truly looking forward to spending have the year in Thailand when the time comes 👍
You can work as an ESL teacher in just about any country with just a bachelors degree in ANYTHING! 1 year and 3 months and I will have my diploma! Asia here I come!
Until pandemic travel restrictions are fully lifted the only international trips I have taken have been from Thailand to USA and back. Many have no choice but to go back to their "crappy lives". I am luck because I have lived in Thailand for years on a Retirement Visa(Non OA). Thailand and especially Chiang Mai is the best combination of cost, things to do, medical and amenities. The only thing missing in Chiang Mai is a beach. Not really a big negative.
@@oceanlover3530 NON OA is a retirement that can only be obtained at a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Similar to a NON O Retirement Ext of Stay that can be obtained at Immigration in Thailand.
AM a videographer/photographer. Been planning for a few months. Hopefully I will be in Thailand in august to check it out for a few months Scared?..yeah. AM gonna do it..yeah!! Have been asking my self how can I use my skills to sustain that life style. I can live on a 900-1000 budget easily.
Can just break things up into 3 budget categories (eg monthly spend of 2k, 4k n 6k) to deal with such questions .. You find that retirement is an addictive bug that may make people not mind spending less just to stretch the budget n be perpetually retired;, especially when they break away from the rat race n realized that we don't need many things to live holistically, simply n happily ..
@@30AndAWakeUp Hope you recovered from covid.. Was surprised that you headed back to the States so quickly . Hopefully you are not home sick n was not bored to death by Thailand that quickly .. ha I’ll definitely buy a pad in a location I like if I intend to stay there for 20 years as paying 7% rental yield annually would have allowed me to buy up the place in 10 years. At the end of a 20 or 30 year stay, I would be able to sell the property for a least 70% of its value if it’s a landed house as land prices will go up n doing so means I will end up almost staying there for FREE .. Having my own place will improve my quality of life as I can spice it up to my liking n add stuff that makes life comfortable like a bigger fridge n TV n having an EV in the garage etc.. Life will be really carefree as I will not need to worry about rental contracts n having to be constantly on the move n the Cost of Living will be really cheap if you take away the rent as Thailand have no property tax .. The downside is that you have to really recce n stay for a while to make sure you like the place n to bargain hard before buying as Thai property is notoriously hard to sell after you buy …
Love the videos keep up the great work, I have a little disability from the VA and am eligible to retire at 60 from the railroad…. Really missing the travel every since I got out of the marines
A question, did you film with the GoPro or iPhone? I noticed in the apartment tour you were using the phone. I'm trying to decide if I should buy a GoPro or keep filming on my Pixel 6 Pro. Thanks!
Another St. Louisan! The markets will be my focus during my stay in Bangkok Chinatown for sure although you can find them everywhere it seems. Hopefully they liven up a bit more in a few months. If you don't mind me asking, what type of Visa are you on? I'm currently looking into the Thailand Special Tourist Visa.
Hey Kevin. Been watching since you started the RV vids...now watching the amazing Thailand ones. My question concerns the tap water in Thailand. I know not to drink any tap water, or even use ice. So does that mean I can't have a Thai iced tea (or any other non-alcoholic drink) rom a restaurant or a street vendor? Thanks!

Yeah, I like those IG lives.
@@30AndAWakeUp Felt like it was easier for you to respond to us as well. But I know that can't always be the case.
The opening scenes remind me of Singapore.
Yeah, very similar.
@@30AndAWakeUp Great video...I'm already retired with savings/pension/dividends, but will check out the books you mentioned. Probably gift them to my kids. Enjoyed the walk around video, but keep the camera pointed outward more often.
Thanl you, it's exactly what i needed today
Appreciate the comment.
Yes, Please give us more of these videos.
Will do
I've been lucky enough to have an employer in the states that alots 6 weeks holiday pay.
That is definitely a solid plan.
Great advice Kevin, keep up these kinda videos!
Thanks! Will do!
Ha! I see the "alternate" title (from your livestream) didn't stick😅😂 This one keeps your "family rating."
Thanks, Kevin!
Yep! ha!
Love this!
Thanks! 🙏
Great info, love the walk around chatting videos.
Glad you enjoyed it
Like your videos. Jason Fieber is great too.
Thanks 👍
You can work as an ESL teacher in just about any country with just a bachelors degree in ANYTHING! 1 year and 3 months and I will have my diploma! Asia here I come!
awesome!!!
If people have 5 years living expenses saved, go live your dream life and I guarantee you that within those 5 years you will find a job you enjoy.
Great point.
Another good one!
Thanks Donna.
Love the walks and all the gorgeous gardens and pond lilies Kevin...thank you for sharing. "Try and fail, but never fail to try." Jared Leto 🙂

Agree, everyone has different lifestyle so it's really different for everyone.
Yes, ma'am
Love the title Kevin! lol.
haha...thanks man! congrats on 75k by the way!!
How do you wash the market vegetables before eating?
I really should but I dont!
yep... I dig the walk around vids!
More to come!
Good points.
Hi Mike. May I ask what a, Non OA, retirement Visa is? Thanks!
✌🏻🙂✌🏻
@@oceanlover3530 NON OA is a retirement that can only be obtained at a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Similar to a NON O Retirement Ext of Stay that can be obtained at Immigration in Thailand.
@@mikeparker6322 Ahh, okay. Thanks for the reply, Mike! ✌🏻
That's awesome.
Can just break things up into 3 budget categories (eg monthly spend of 2k, 4k n 6k) to deal with such questions ..
You find that retirement is an addictive bug that may make people not mind spending less just to stretch the budget n be perpetually retired;, especially when they break away from the rat race n realized that we don't need many things to live holistically, simply n happily ..
good point
@@30AndAWakeUp Hope you recovered from covid..
Was surprised that you headed back to the States so quickly .
Hopefully you are not home sick n was not bored to death by Thailand that quickly .. ha
I’ll definitely buy a pad in a location I like if I intend to stay there for 20 years as paying 7% rental yield annually would have allowed me to buy up the place in 10 years.
That's exactly how I felt after I left the Navy.
A question, did you film with the GoPro or iPhone? I noticed in the apartment tour you were using the phone. I'm trying to decide if I should buy a GoPro or keep filming on my Pixel 6 Pro. Thanks!
Can't go wrong with either.
Funny was writing you about faces when you showed an entrance . Great for vids
😁
Can a tourist ride a moped or motorcycle if not what are the steps
yes....if you get stopped by police you will get a ticket if you dont have an international drivers license though
Another St.
The BKK Chinatown market is awesome! I have the Thai Elite Visa.
What is your equipment on this video, please.
Go Pro 10
you don't know how i would love to know a little about Working online... i would fly to Chiang Mai right now!
Check out remote darren.
@@30AndAWakeUp i will. Thanks for your great video again Sir!
Can you do a video about how to transfer funds from an American bank to Thailand?
Like how to transfer to a Thai bank? Or just access your money? If it's the later, you just go to an ATM like you would in the states.
Thanks!
I have never had an issue with ice. I think they make it with purified water. Water is soooo cheap here compared the other places.
Great idea. I am planning to move to Chiang Mai in April, any suggestions on place to live/rent one bedroom apt. I been in Nimman area.
Any of the Palm buildings are nice.
Thanks
I'm loving the walk around talkie videos.
Thanks!
Perfect answer Kevin, sounds flippant....but really isn't.
Thanks.
Great to see you again. Question: How much money does a Canadian need ? ;)
Ha! As much as it takes!
Its's not what you are that's holding your back.
It's what you think you are not.............
Good point
Roll on end of 23’ I be there hopefully !

Very cool!
Joining your walks is great. Thanks.
Pitihaya…cut in half lengthwise and eat with spoon. Do you like durian?
I do not like durian! :)
No one is ever just so-so about durian. Never do you hear, “it’s not bad.”
As of right now, I have $120,000 saved up. But no passive insurance
That will last you a bit of time in Thailand but at some point it'll run out.
@@30AndAWakeUp yes I agree! Even though I’m a minimalist and still planning to save more money. Insurance* meant income
Good morning I can’t wait to visit
Morning!
Really nice to see regular streets. I hope I get to Thailand in time to see it less busy. I am a shameless tourist who hates tourist crowds 🤣
Haha...I am the same!
Man, you are great! I love the way you think!🍻🍻
I appreciate that!
Which is better dominican republic are thailand?
I like them both
Easy, if you don't speak Spanish; skip Dom.
What Europe countries have you been to?
Too many to count! I lived in Italy for 2 years in the late 90s and was stationed on a US Navy ship there. All we did was hop from country to country back then.
I am working on my investments and trying to plan out Financial Independence in Thailand:
very cool
Any issues using Tricare in Thailand?
I've never used it here but friends have said no issue. Medical is so cheap here...just never had to use it.
@@30AndAWakeUp Thank you! I'm a retired Navy Officer living in Japan, never used Tricare, if needed I do have full access to the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka along with USNH Okinawa. Be safe my friend.
