"And this one is a pen" LOL
This has kinda surprised me...
Esas plumas sí suenan "bien" si le quitas el tintero de adentro. Funciona!
I have one of those pen recorders :D
"I guess because it's so small, physics becomes different." This is exactly what quantum physics is.
😂😂
Let's build a quantum flute...
@@burkhardstackelberg1203 I'm down for that.
(That was a quark pun, but it wasn't very good.)
thumbs *up*
@@tom_something idk, it might sound kind of strange, but it could have it's own sort of charm!!
I play on the Aulos. They can get very bright. I played in an early music ensemble in college. They would let non majors join to learn the recorder, so we had times I would play a duet with them and they would only play soprano recorder, so if I had to play the top line above them I would use Sopranino or this.
My favorite memory with the garklin recorder is during one of our ensemble class that lets students preform a song or two we were doing two songs and one was a garklin solo, so I kept it in my shirt pocket while I played my alto recorder. During my solo I went up to the front and moved my stand then pulled it out of my pocket and played. After the class let out people kept asking about the recorder and saying they thought I was going to sing before I pull the recorder out.
The thing I do not like about it is I am to big to play it comfortably. I am 6 ft 7 in, so my hands can barely squeeze together to play the instrument my recommendation is trim you fingernails or get scratched while playing:
The garklein is the cutest thing - and looks challenging to play too! It's the Chihuahua of the recorder family (the subcontrabass being the Great Dane, LOL) Love your cherry top Sarah :)
Same, that top is cute!
Now I can't unsee or unhear, TIHI
It's brilliant for playing Morris dance music in a group because it cuts over the top of all the squeezeboxes and can actually be heard unlike a soprano recorder or tin whistle.
YES!!!
Also zelda music. Because it sounds like a pendant ocarina :3
Just what I was thinking. My sopranino does well, but my Garklein would be excellent
There is a piece for solo Garklein,
It's called Eisvogel but can't remember the composer, but you can find it on UA-cam
ua-cam.com/video/Hn2LJeSilvo/v-deo.html
We use garklein in our 13th Century pieces to add a 2 octave organum. They’re a very similar size to the little bone flutes found in archaeological digs.
We use Kung Praetorius

Honestly, I hated playing the recorder during elementary school music class (especially considering there were 25+ recorders playing in unison). However, coming across this channel, I can appreciate the instrument a whole lot more.
"unison" so optimistic by your part
OMG, same
@@sarahhavillamelooliveira5825 shame on you both! It’s a great instrument.
@@kishascape Yes, I used to hate it, but now I love it. Hard to love it with 40 naughty kids playing badly when you are sensitive to both tone and volume (autistic). You should read the whole comment though.
I totally agree. It's actually a miracle I still play the recorder, after all the things I have had to endure during my recorder classes.
Finally, an instrument for guinea pigs to play!
Man, you inhale too fast or too hard and that thing can end up logged inside your throat
I played this video without headphones and my cat ran to the window to look for birds.
That tiny recorder is like my piccolo, I love it and hate it a lot in equal measure
It's low d is an octave higher than the lowest note of the piccolo
recorder fun I know, you seemed to miss the entire point of my comment but that’s ok
1. Kobliczek has gar klein (which I have in the older Hopf variant)
2. Thanks for mentioning me. I also have an arranged piece for 4 different C recorders :-)
3. A while back I was in a theatre production and I played the gar klein against a loud mass of instruments. One of my follow musicians remarked that "Whatever that instrument cost, it's worth it just for that high G" which was the final note of the piece.
Yes! What was that piece you refer to in nr. 3 ?? :)
I just got a Garklein (the Aulos one)! I have to admit it's mostly for two not actually musical reasons: For the satisfaction of completing my collection (or, having everything from basset upwards - the super low ones are just too expensive for me to afford) and for the absolute hilarity of whipping a recorder out of a random pocket in my clothes at any point 😂
It's such a tiny instrument, it's mere existence is so funny, and just holding it immediately improves my mood :D
I just recently got an Aulos garklein because I'm a huge sucker for novelty and was pleasently surprised by it's sound! It's sweeter and much less piercing than I thought it would be.
I like how she thought it would hurt my ears, but i play piccolo honey, so nothing could hurt my ears more 😂
Well, in real life it is much worse to bear than on UA-cam. But I have to admin: I think piccolo "wins"
The garklein can actually play the A she played, an octave higher. So the garklein can actually play almost an octave higher than the Picollo. 😂
I think old video game music would be great for this and anything done on pendant ocarinas. They sound very similar so this would be good for Zelda NES songs.
There's a solo piece for garklein I'm aware of: "Eisvogel" by Otfried Büsing."Eisvogel" is German for the kingfisher bird.
I played one of these years and years ago in a university Renaissance dance band one season and it never failed to scare out birds in the theatre ceiling. :) But I'm still a bit more at ease with sopranino.
We have a piece where I have dropped the sopranino line an octave and play it on the Garklein. It is a bit sweeter than the sopranino.
I have played together with an accordeon doubling simply the melody. Especially in dance pieces or more folk music like pieces it provides some fun effect. ( plus you are widely heard if outdoors) Feels a bit like a cheekily animal trying to be brave in the presence of a big bear... ;-))
I like that little thing. I play it occasionally, with some van eyk. Or just to annoy others....
I would love it if a composer would write a duet for garklein and bassoon. In fact, i might one day have a go at that myself.... heard it here first!!! Make it happen and call it ‘willem’s Duet’
Oh, bought my plastic one via ebay for 20ish euro several years ago. It works with quite a bit of compensating to be kinda in tune
Just wondering whether you'd like to make a video about playing jazz on the recorder?
I mean... classical music is really great but sometimes I just wanna have a little bit fun with the bossa nova beats on youtube :)
If you're interested in playing jazz on the recorder, you might want to youtube Tali Rubenstein, she does a lot of great jazz stuff on the recorder.
I did play jazz on the recorder, usually alto, for my first FNAF anniversary and One Piece (4Kids) theme, with a unison of electric guitar.
idk if this is what you are looking for but a lot of AACM musicians (a specific type of free jazz) have played bass and other recorders (I know roscoe Mitchell for one often performs on bass recorder)
Yes! My early music group loves to do a quartet or trio up the octave w garklein on top. We also have a fun tune we play called Skarazula which my my bandmate plays on the garklein, others accompany on mandolin, dumbek and tambourine while I lead the audience in some participatory clapping along! 🎶🎶🎶👏
A lot of the Garklein music is transcribed music. Do you have a C# recorder? The F#, C#, F#, C# (Half step Up) ensemble plays everything up a half step.
I would love to see a video of your hypothetical "high quartet" ("We Are High" band name???).
6:19 It will sound High but maybe for perhaps if you were doing all of your Recorder Quartet Music an Octave Higher in a new concert.
Thomann's garklein is not that bad. At least, not as bad as the rest of its lower recorders... Tomann's and Aulos garklein are quite similar. Maybe and suspiciously too much similar.
The highest note on the garklein (A) is just a second higher than the highest note on the sopranino (G).
If you wish to play the garklein because its sound, go for it, but in most cases you can just use the sopranino that plays up to the high G.
On my old Moeck Rottenburgh sopranino, I can play up to the high g#. We have used the garklein in instrument demonstrations and for its visual effect.
Gustavo Henrique de Francisco hehe I managed to get to the a on my küng superio sopranino (never tried to get any higher but it would proably work😂)
I managed to go to the high G above the A Sarah played, on my Aulos symphony garklein.😂
I used to play it all the time for my ARS chapter on the soprano line. Nobody ever told me not to, but they somehow seemed happier when I stopped.
Do you have a C# Soprano? It transposes up half a step (Renaissance recorders transpose up half a step).
Can't you play the B7 and C8 as harmonics (3rd harmonic on E6 or F6)? Or is that too high?
this video scared my cat
I own an Aulos Symphony 501S garklein and an inexpensive no-brand wooden garklein. The Aulos 501S "speaks" easily and plays in tune but is brighter/harsher/louder than my wooden garklen. Most of my recorder playing is at church where a flutist and I play along with hymns. When I want to play an octave above the soprano line, I usually play a sopranino rather than a garklein. If you own a sopranino, soprano, and alto and want to expand your collection, you could certainly get an Aulos 501S garklein, but you would get more use and value out of a Yamaha YRT-304B tenor. See Sarah's tenor video.
6:18 Possible, it will sound high but perhaps for a song cover like Stitches (SATB) Arranged by Brandy Kay Riha (transcribed for 2 ft quartet Sopranissimo, Sopranino, Soprano, Alto)
Nice dog whistle.
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder Playing a Quartet an octave higher Garklein, Sopranino, Soprano, & Alto that might be appropriate for Christmas Carols.
6:06 A quartet up an Octave, I could do that for song covers like The (Highest pitched) Greatest Show arranged by Mark Brymer (transcribed for High pitched quartet).
Do you think the instrument used in Star Trek TNG episode to play Picard's performance of "Inner Light" was the Gar Klein? link:ua-cam.com/video/AE1Zo5Ljws0/v-deo.html
Wait a minute there's an instrument higher than that, the Piccolino Recorder in F6, it's 2 Octaves above the Alto Recorder. If we had an instrument even higher pitched than that, it would actually break back in pitch like a Pipe Organ mixture to solve the out-of-range problem.
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder Playing a Quartet up an Octave (Piccolo, Sopranino, Soprano, Alto), that might be ideal for something like Broadway music.
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder The Aulos Garklein in plastic has a better quality due to updates.
I've managed to reach a high C

It works!
I have a Hopf Prætorius I found in a secondhand shop. I carry it in my pocket when I go on hikes. I play Irish and other trad tunes on it.
2:49 Aren't those highest notes G, A, and B? Are B and C possible?
I occasionally use the Garklein how you mentioned - to strengthen the melody at a crescendo. It has such a piercing tone that you can back way off on the volume and still get the effect. Here's an example where I did that for a Christmas tune (Oh, and I'm using the Aulos model): ua-cam.com/video/OSipfTjcsAo/v-deo.html
That was a wonderful introduction to the garklein recorder, with its history, the makers, and ideas for its use. Bravo, Sarah!
Otfried Büsing: Eisvogel. Look it up on UA-cam. This is a contemporary piece for Garklein and it surprised me alot. This sound is very very sweet
Ooooh, this is interesting! I am a recorder player in Norway. Lately I have been playing with my church choir, both together with the choir, but also at mass playing with the psalms with organ and congregation. Wonderful! Our church is a very old stone church with an incredible sound. I normally play the sopranino (and of course also the soprano and alto some times), it sounds amazing with the organ. Now I think I have to try to get me a garklein recorder as well. Can't wait to try it! My flutes are all Moeck Rottenburg btw. I love your channel!
Ah, the beautiful garklein! One of the instruments I do so cherish for wind parts in pieces of mine!
Thanks for this amazing vid again; I fell in love with the garklein 10 ys ago. I have an Aulos model that gave special colour to the Orfeo beginning (Toccata - the funny thing in fingering of the Garklein that if you open the holes starting from the lowest D it gives quite a perfect D major scale - unlike in the case of a soprano recorder where you have to use fork fingerin for Fsharp) and I used it for some folk dances too. But I had some terrible experiences too with it, e.g. we started a song in our church as a little instrumental foreplay (prelude) in combination with a violoncello. We wanted to perform a duet but it was hilarious a real catastropy. Violoncello and garklein are just simply too "far" from each other the whole church was rofl...
Such a great player...
"If you 'ant subscribed to this channel already"
Love it, we say 'ant instead of haven't too😊
Haha! Where are you from?
@@Team_Recorder lovely leafy Lincolnshire 😊
Love your videos! You mentioned some ensemble music with the garklein, but I was also hoping that you could tell us about some easy to intermediate ensemble music with the usual choice of soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders. Thanks! :)
2:35 Suddenly, the Mad Hatter's tea party.
I literally bought a Garklein a few days ago… and had to see that it is too small for my big fingers.
My stubby little fingers barely fit on a sopranino -- I can't imagine trying to cram them onto that tiny little thing! :)
Hello Sarah! 😊 Could you please, please, pleeeeaaase make a video about breathing and Garklein?
I normally have no problems to take the right amount of air but while playing the Garklein I have the urge to let air go (leaky nose...) but at the same time I cannot just take less air bc, you know, I'm a human and need some oxygen to function 😶😅
Dog when he hears...
Tenor: Relaxing 😇
Alto: Sweet
Soprano: 😭
Sopranino: Stop 😡
Garklein: 💀
I just saw the notification for this video and i got a little excited and dropped my phone😂
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder The Piccolo Recorder could be used to play a Quartet up an octave which will sound high but perhaps for Doubling a standard recorder quartet up an octave. However there's something smaller than that the Piccolino Recorder in F which sounds 2 octaves higher than the Alto Recorder.
Make a intro for the voice flute.
In general, I find the garklein and the sopranino are great for outdoor performances. The reduced echo takes some of the shrillness away, and they can be heard, even over "loud" instruments or a bit of ambient noise.
I bought an Aulos just to carry around in my pocket. The big flange at the bottom does nothing for the sound, and it dug into my leg when the instrument was in my pants pocket, so I cut the flange off. It is much easier to carry now. It is a hard instrument to get your fingers on properly. I wish Aulos had rotated the left hand holes a bit further left, and the right hand holes a bit further right.
Nice. I'm a bit jealous, because I can't play the garklein: my fingers are just too wide. I can barely play sopranino.
You can get higher pitches by covering the bottom of the instrument with your pinky. I've taken my Aulos up to C or so with that method. There's a way to get higher notes by covering the window, but it's hard to get consistently.
Use earplugs!
What is sopranino kung model name?
you could probably play a lot of traditional Irish tin whistle music. I'd like to hear Cooly's Reel on it!
I bet it would be a great companion in ensemble recorders for Waverly Consort.
I really enjoyed this video! I play a garklein surprisingly often, mostly for English country dance music and morris dance music in a large-ish band. I've struggled with that highest A and never realized I should change my fingering for it. Thank you thank you thank you!
It does sound like a bird! I could see it being useful for modern musicians. It would be fun to have and play with for someone who just likes to play music or record and compose their own stuff.
Absolutely amazing and adorably cute it's so small!!😊
Your German pronunciation is way too good! 😁
Danke 😊
I played the Garklein in the piece Infectious Recorders by Daniel Hellbach. In this piece for a solo player, you play all the recorders from basset tot garklein. The garklein even together with the sopranino! I love this piece. On my channel you can find a video of me playing it.
That’s great Pauline, thanks for letting me know!!
There was this time at the band camp...
Thanks for this great video! I play the Kynseker and have played it in some of the Orfeo pieces, adds great excitement to the folky dance tunes.
Ok, this video made me ask for a garklein for Christmas ... And I'm a cellist/gamba player ! My housemates are gonna love it ...
So it can't go as low as a sopranino and a sopranino can probably hit higher notes than it in the top register too? Maybe why it's not used much? I guess its probably more a novelty, s'pose it'd fit easily in a pocket but mine are big enough for my soprano to fit in one piece anyways, and even the higher notes on that can be abit too much, use it sparingly! No big solos on that recorder thanks! lol, actually my alto is fast becoming my favourite, the lower notes are beautiful and it can go plenty high enough!
Hi, Sarah. I wish you had labeled this video “for experts only”. My first recorder was a sopranino, and my friends begged me to take up a different hobby. I bought it because I could carry it around in my pocket. That was about 50 years ago. Now I cringe at beginners who only play soprano. With recorders, the higher the instrument, the more difficult to play in tune. So, fellow Team Recorder fans, if you’re contemplating a garklein (or sopranino or soprano) because it’s so conveniently small, please don’t. Start bigger!
jl5555ls >> My bass, with keys, has about the same finger reach as my alto - less in some places. My tenor, with keys, is as comfortable as a soprano, except that it’s heavier, so I use a neck strap. In Japan children learn all sizes. But as for the recorder as a “first instrument” in American elementary schools, I would advise instead the penny whistle. It’s less expensive, has simpler fingering, and does not require as subtle of breath control. It’s not fully chromatic, but in the one or two years those kids are exposed to the recorder (before going on to “real instruments”) they don’t play in more than two or three keys. If a kid want to move up to the recorder rather than flute or clarinet, it would be great if that were an option!
I've recently started playing and am bing watching your videos! Thank you so much for TEAM RECORDER Sarah :)
This looks exceedingly difficult to play... Here's an instrument which women have an advantage for playing over men. It is indeed designed for players with tiny, delicate hands.
Hey! Wait.... This means that Trump could play it better than any other man !
Hi Sarah! Mmmmm I don't have that C little recorder neither. I have the sopranino recorder. If I would play it with notation it should be in the same as in the F sopranino recorder, in the brand new B cleft. Do you have a website where I could buy this C little recorder? Thank you in advance! Greetings from Tijuana!
I might try it on sicilian tarantella usually played on a friscalettu, small flute in "cana" with 7 holes front and 2 at the back. The most standard is the C friscalettu (which starts all holes closed at A, well, don't try to understand :-) ). And i have seen a friscalettu in E which is even shorter than the garklein !
This was very useful for learning the different fingerings for the garklein! I just picked one up in San Antonio this weekend, and I can’t wait to share it with my students
What about using it for the piccolo solo in Souza’s March “Stars and Stripes Forever”?
Hi. I’ve heard that there were a job in Europe which one grew birds from chicks and told them to sing tunes using a very small recorder. I guess that had to be birds like canaries which can learn to sing. Birds who sang beautiful tunes were traded with high price. I wonder if that recorder was used for that.
the pen in the form of a recorder is very cool :)
I have the Aulos version of the Garklein, i like to play Bird sounds My African Gray Parrot goes Crazy when i play it, or a Sopranino he goes goofy for that sound.
I got a plastic garklein a while ago and ended up selling it, because I literally couldn't play it. I'm a 6' tall guy and while I don't have fat fingers or anything, i literally couldn't fit my fingers on it without squishing them together 😂
I ment to say The Ocarina
I can just about play my sopranino let alone something that small... it's so cute though haha
I had an Aulos a while ago. It was called the Earsplitter.
Thank you for making this video, Sarah! I have been eagerly anticipating it ever since your video on the tenor recorder. 😊
By the way, your cheek highlight is absolutely gorgeous! May I ask which product you’re wearing?
Oh! Thank you for noticing! :D It's the Diamond highlighter by Too-faced - I just bought it and I love it!!
I bought one of these. It was in immensely frustrating experience because, even offset, the holes were closer together than the width of my fingers. The cat considered its presence a declaration of war.
Rational time. Are there any books on it, separate notes?
I was given a tiny (1") necklace ocarina as a gift. It was billed as a soprano. It's lowest note is E6, highest is G7. I wear it in self defense. Feels like I should have to register it as a deadly weapon.
I guess Richard Bobo is the only one who dares to demonstrate the full range of the Garklein on YT😂
woooowww... super info... really wanna use it.. the voice is sooo sweet.... Thank you Sarah... It looks cute too.
Because it's so small, physics becomes different 🤣
