Basically what he's saying as an investment for him. It wasnt a good deal because he knew how much money they would have to raise to make it profitable and that's a risk he wasnt willing to take. Which, when you're that rich, to me it sounds like it makes perfect sense.

    • @damiancarr168

More like investing in it meant you were basically gambling and hoping to hit the lottery. These two companies got lucky and good for them but as an investor that's not a good way to make money. For every Ring or Uber there are thousands more of these businesses that just tank. If you want to gamble with money and futures get into stocks, not companies

“deluded to next to nothing.” His problem was that to raise that money they would have to sell most of the business, leaving “next to nothing” for themselves. According to this, the problem was that going through all that work just to have a tiny share of the company wasn’t worth it. The only “risk” would be the couple hundred thousand he’d have to invest at the start, which isn’t much for him.

But he does bring up a great point. Risk is everything, it is a billion dollar idea but do you have the millions to make it real. When it comes to millions of dollars, risk is something you have to keep in mind when gambling.

I didn't want to because I eventually wanted to leave construction for something better (which I did but many years later) and I thought if I bought a house I would have to stay in construction. Dumbest thought ever....the houses I was looking at during that time would have made me a millionaire by now.

The company, which was valued at over US$2 billion in 2018, became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uber after being acquired for $3.1 billion in January 2020) This seems like high-tech company approach, ok we gonna buy you.
