OMG thank you for telling us about the ugly stage. I have abandoned so many projects because I thought I just was not any good at it. I will push through from now on!
Hi Karen I think you must have been reading my mind. I'm a 65 year old woman who has wanted to start painting for many years but has always been terrified that I'll waste products/money because it will be so bad or I'll make an awful mess. I'm enjoying your enthusiasm and feeling a bit more confident about starting. I would love to receive your pdfs so I can keep them to hand while I get started. Thank you so much for all your teachings❤️
So glad I have found some time to watch your videos. I have dabbled in all kinds of art for more than 40 years and recently have been drawn to mixed media. I appreciate your enthusiasm and instruction.
So excited to start creating, I have had an idea for a mixed media piece fermenting in my mind, and I haven't done art is years. So just gaining confidence to start the work!!! And have fun with mixed media and colours. Thank you for this video.
This is a fantastic explanation. It has been so long since I made one with more than paint, the breakdown is fantastic. You are so awesome for creating these sheets for us!! Can’t wait for the next video!! Thank you!!
Thank you Cheryl! I'm so excited these videos are inspiring you to think outside the box!! The next cheatsheet is going to be crazy helpful, working on it as we speak! See you next week!
Ok Karen, there is no ugly stage in your painting/work, I think it looks great. I know before there is detail on my work, my girls are pretty ugly. LOL. Love your work.
I would love one of your hamburgers! My 50 yr old daughter comes to paint with me twice a week! We love your videos and we have so much fun together. I love your girls! I live on a very limited income but I’m saving for one of your books! You are a sweetie, thank you for all the fun, I’ve found it’s never too late to learn something new! ❤️❤️❤️
Hello Karen! You are amazing! Thank you for the time, the passion and the vibes that you are putting in this wonderful series of mixed media. Hi Nana!! So happy that you're learning along with the series! Here's the Hamburger Cheatsheet and they'll be a new one out next week as well! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/
I just got the Mixed Media book and would love a cheat sheet! I want to get started with something simple, I am a beginner and have just started collecting materials.
I love watching your videos, they are helping me so much! I think I might actually be learning more from you than I learnt at school 😂 I'm really glad you mentioned the clear gesso having grittiness to it as I used it on one of my projects and thought I had used all the wrong materials because it was such a rough texture. I now know I need to get white gesso and matt medium instead 😁
Your videos are such an upbeat part of my day. After I finish a few projects I'm in the middle of, I think I'll give that oil painting "hot dog" a try!!
Love your videos, Karen. I have your hamburger cheat sheet and did my very first girl/face canvas this week. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity with us all. Happy days! xo
Thank you so much for reminding me of the ugly stage, lol. I was painting an abstract floral painting for a friend for Christmas, and it hit a serious ugly stage right before the shadows and highlights. I almost gave up. And then I put one of your videos on and bam!!! Ugly stage is a thing, lol. So I started adding all the good stuff and am happy to report we survived the ugly stage. I absolutely love your videos!! You even got me to start drawing faces again, which I swore I would never do once I finished college! You are an amazing teacher. 😊😊😊
Karen thanks so much for freely sharing and spreading your artful enthusiasm, inspiration, and joy!. Now I’m not complaining, but maybe there are some who maybe home bound due to a medical disability. We just can’t get out and do what we once did and don’t have anyone around anymore to help. My income also greatly decreased compared to what I made working 35 years as an RN. basically I’m trying to thank you for being there and freely sharing your knowledge with us, freely being the operative word here at least for me, it’s also more than that. I know I would still be depressed and having a pity party for one if I didn’t find art yo express how I feel and get the good and yes, bad, out. Also I’d love to have and be able to reference your hamburger quickly and easily especially as I learn your system so if possible could you share how I could do that I’d really appreciate it And thank you, for so much more than you will ever know. Best wish Michelle
You are so not alone Michelle!! I have so many students who are in the same or similar situation, I think that's why it brings me so much joy to share my knowledge, making art makes people happy!!!! So I want to make sure we make that possible for as many people as possible!!! So you're so welcome! I promise to keep giving if you promise to keep creating. Deal?
I love this video, but then again, I love them all. How could I get the other sheet with the list of products that work together? I'm not sure what you called it. Thank you.
Ah yes, the ugly stage. Forever that is where I stopped a piece, it was wonky, the colors were wrong, the proportions were wrong, this isn't what I had in my head when I started. Learning to get past that phase is 1 of the most helpful lessons you give (that's like 1 of the best in like 200 different things you teach us). You've encouraged me to go back into my journals, canvases and such for the pieces that made me cry ( and want to throw away all my art supplies because obviously I'm really bad at this) and start to work them again. Most of those reworked, pieces make me smile now. TFS
I'm so so so happy to here that Carlotta!! The ugly stage is a really important "thing" to understand...so you know what to do when you get there. I'll be talking more about this next week. I am thrilled you've been able to come that with your work, I hope other people read this message so that they can have hope for their most hated projects as well! Thanks for sharing, so helpful!

Hi Tracey, that makes me so happy to hear! I'm going to link you to my drawing channel where I have a ton of videos geared towards drawing: bit.ly/karendraws
Yessss!!!! I have the hamburger sheet, canNot wAiT for the next one!!! Imagine my surprise when I went & bought all sorts of sprays, markers, & inks, just to find out they MOVE when disturbed with liquid. So frustrating. (Unfortunately, they don’t share this information on the product labeling) Thank you for condensing everything into some basic categories. The little tips & tricks, and condensing all of this info., sets you apart in the GinORmouS world of mixed media. Thank you for being a great teacher....🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
OMG I am so so happy the videos are so helpful to you!!! Yes, the world of water-solubility is a BIG one! Next weeks cheatsheet will be invaluable for you I think!
I agree, i think so!! I know that alot of the products I have are “water soluble”...I just didn’t know they were still “water soluble” after they “dry”. I still have them, & no idea what to do with them, or what the best products are to seal them. Do I spray them? Brush them? I’ve seen someone use a gelatin plate to put down the sealant (airbrush medium) then apply the smaller art piece (5x7) face down onto the plate, & peel up the artwork. That doesn’t really work on a 11x14, or even 8x10 when the gel plate is only 5x7. I love Tombow watercolor markers, but I won’t play with them until I can figure out how to seal them, so I can layer over them. Or where to put them in the burger...so, I agree with you on the water solubility component. Huge hurdle for me. ....Just did a art run, (looking for Strathmore journal, or watercolor paper....) guess what?? Strathmore came out with 184 lb., vellum suface mixed media paper in the “400 series” !!!!!! (The ONLY reason I bought it? I have a heavy hand with wet media, & I can seriously bang up watercolor paper very quickly. And it’s Black Friday. Lol. ) 🤣 🤭
I appreciate your energy so much. You are like sunshine! I recently found your channel, subbed and am working my way through this playlist. Any thoughts on which kind of brayer to use at this stage? Also, why do you add ultra matte gesso to the skin paint? The mod podge will create a matte finish later. I'm sure there is a reason so I am curious how it works together. Thanks!
Hey Carla!! I find brayers are all pretty much the same! I don't think it makes a big difference! And I didn't add Gesso into the skin paint, I just prepped the surface with it so the skin layer would cover better. The Mod Podge - even Matte - actually creates a nice, satin surface that I love to then doodle over with my pitt pens (which you'll see in the following videos!). Hope that clarifies what was going on there!
I do a lot of work in art journals so those are easy to compile! Lots have been published in magazines so journals are a nice way to collect and ship lots of work in one package! I don't sell my work but I do give pieces away to my top tier Patreon members, monthly!
@@ArtHealsTheSoul cuz selling and shipping it is a giant pain, the process is VERY time consuming and VERY expensive... and my joy comes from making it and teaching it, alone. Plus then I can gift it to all my generous patrons! I think giving it away is much more satisfying than selling it. I'd rather spend my time making tutorials and writing more art books, not packing up paintings! There's no fun in that!
I got you! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/ And there's another whopping 9 page guide coming out with my video this morning so make sure you don't miss that!!
I am curious is Chipboard an acceptable substrate for mixed media?? I have a ton of it and well I am curious would that work? I also have a ton of ideas for doing collages on what I have to make books with it. So any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
You think if I gesso and then graphite my drawing.... could I use workable fixative on the drawing before adding MORE gesso to prevent the smear? Would that work?
Hi Jennifer, I'm so glad you're loving the series!!!! My hamburger PDF will definitely help you as you get started! Enjoy: awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/
Hi Karen I love your work and I have some of your earlier books. Is the sheet you showed in today’s video going to be available as a cheat sheet that’s the one about adding liquid? Thanks for all you do you’re awesome. ❤️
i'm new to mixed media art...and looking forward to starting with it...could you please send me the cheat sheet? I'm learning so much from you...thank you very much for sharing.

I really like your videos I don't comment really but I always watch your videos ... I think after christmas I am gonna buy your book it looks fantastic. I have that same clear gesso its terrible. Everyone said to try the clear gesso by dina wakley so I did and it's a million times better then the liquidtex one. its super smooth. And way more enjoyable to use . Definitely try it if you get the chance it will change your mind about clear gesso. Thanks for making such great videos! 💯☺
Thanks for taking a minute to leave such lovely comments, I truly do appreciate it! I will ABSOLUTELY be checking out her Clear Gesso, I hate Liquitex's so much!!! lol! Glad I'm not the only one! Really appreciate that tip!!
so grateful for this series! thank you! just wondering if i could get the "Which products do what when you add liquid?" sheet? is that the one for next week? can't wait for the next video!
Is it possible to get a cheat sheet for the Hamburger process as well as the behavior of different products when they get wet? Thanks! Thank you SOOO much for your amazing videos!! I’m hooked! :) :) :)

It looks like I'm chasing you! But your advices are becoming really precious and your pdf files are a really useful guideline to me. So, can i have the link for the cheat sheet, please? Thank you in advance. :)
Hi! It's not, unfortunately. It is made to slow down the drying time of your acrylics by 40%. So why it may have cohesive properties, it's going to be kind of a pain to work with as you have to wait a loooooong time to get to the next layer. But that's entirely up to you if you mind that or not! It would drive me absolutely bonkers but I have the patience of a 5 year old!! So if it were me I'd simply exchange it for the proper choice.
Is it not there yet? I think maybe it is! Here's the link to all the pdfs (you'll need the whole packet I'm attaching for when you get to Episode 5!) !! (the Hamburger is on page 2 of the bigger packet!) Let me know if you have any questions! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-supplies/
Currently on #4...really a terrific series! I just learned thee liquatex clear gesso=gritty & icky! But....if ur interested...finnabair makes a brown 8 oz tube of clear gesso that is smooth!
Hi great videos I was curious what do you do with all your finished projects do you sell them or do you just fill your house with them ?
I do a lot of work in art journals so those are easy to compile! Lots have been published in magazines so journals are a nice way to collect and ship lots of work in one package! I don't sell my work but I do give pieces away to my top tier Patreon members, monthly!
Karen Campbell, Artist ok how come you don’t sale your art?
@@ArtHealsTheSoul cuz selling and shipping it is a giant pain, the process is VERY time consuming and VERY expensive... and my joy comes from making it and teaching it, alone. Plus then I can gift it to all my generous patrons! I think giving it away is much more satisfying than selling it. I'd rather spend my time making tutorials and writing more art books, not packing up paintings! There's no fun in that!
@@KarenCampbellArtist Ok just wondering there are different ways of having an art business and what ever floats anybodies boat .
@@ArtHealsTheSoul totally! Those are all very good questions!!

Can i just thin down heavy gesso with water to make it more liquid?
Technically yes, but I don't think you'll ever get it to the perfectly liquidy state of regular Gesso, but yes you can!

I accidentally bought slow dri medium instead of Matte medium 🥴 is it the same as the matte ?
