As I watched this scene when I saw it in theaters, I almost cried in beside my girlfriend, but I hid the tears well and she didn't catch me. Reason: Batman for sure wanted to say "I love you" to her, but he hid that so well by just repeating a quote she said before, and the music that followed. Just great writing and acting, which lacks in so many films now.
This quote and the haunting music behind it is THE moment. Inspirational. Biblical Words... Thank you NCKAZ for the best and most tastefully done version.
one of the 2 scenes in the movie that gave me goosebumps because they were just so raw. i could watch this 100 times back to back and still get goosebumps after he delivers the line and she realizes who he is.
Sad how the top two comments are jokes. This is one of the best scenes in the movie. I think if people actually took this quote to heart, the world would be a much better place.
I laughed when I first saw this. I thought it was just a corny line. Now i think its just amazing acting from Bale. The way he makes subtle references in tone to Bruce Wayne, the man underneath, then deepens his voice, becoming powerful and full of intent for what he has become, Batman.
In both batman films there are phrases that someone says to bruce and later on in the film, he repeats the phrase as batman. In BB its the 'what i do that defines me' line and in TDK its ' you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.' But i wonder what it will be for B3...
I completely agree and don't get me wrong Ledger did an amazing job and was a very talented actor but he's been singled out so much more because of his untimely demise. The rest of the cast deserve some credit too.
yeah, that's the voice he shoulda used when he delivered dramatic lines in the dark knight. like the scene were he had that long dialogue with harvey dent, telling hime he was a "force for good".
who says the joker walks around dressed like that? He never reveals anything about his past or personal life, except the two "wanna know how I got these scars" scenes. you don't even know if those are true. Did you notice that they never figured out his name or that when he got arrested, he blew up the prison and got out. yes in the end he was arrested again, but he still achieved his goal, having turned the pure, good Harvey Dent into a madman. nothing is simple with the Joker, that's the point
you right!. i used this batman quote first time i made love to my girlfriend she was in bathroom and i took clothes off and got under blanket when she approached i said "it's not who i am underneath..but what i do that defines me"
would be so epic if his cape didn't work at that moment xD "ahh time for me to fly away like a badass >:)" *Jumps off building* "wait..OHHH SHII--*smashes into building*
awesome clip. this voice is much better than the gruff one from TDK. it's not really a "nckaz production," btw. i mean, you just put the clip on youtube. anyone could do that. but thanks a lot =]
WhOa the original music was better for this particular scene, not the one you changed to, in my opinion. The music when he jumps off, is really why I love this scene, that sound fits soooo well.
Do you think this is based on Sartre's Existentialist quote? "There is no human nature, because there is no God to have a conception of it. Man simply is. Not that he is simply what he conceives himself to be, but he is what he wills, and as he conceives himself after already existing - as he wills to be after that leap towards existence." - Sartre. Batman literally leaps into a bat-shaped existence after saying this quote too!
I just can't take a guy who chooses to fight crime dressed in an animal costume seriously, nor a crimnal dressed as a clown. The clown would be arrested and put in a state jail very quickly due to how easy he is to recognize and convict, and batman would probably be told to seek a mental health expert. have you heard the saying 'a writer should never tell, only show" - that's what batman did wrong in this scene here. If it's what he does that defines him, why is he telling us? We're not dumb.
Batman - "It's not who I am underneath. It's what I do that defines me" Rachael - "Bruce?" Batman - "Oh shit, I forgot you told me that..." *jumps off building*
@jkprojects no, he got thin because hes a real batman should be smaller and quicker than real muscular. and the new suit was made because the last one was too heavy and christian bale had a hard time moving.
Batman - "It's not who I am underneath. It's what I do that defines me" Rachael - "Bruce?" Batman thinking - "Oh Shit! She recognized me!!! GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Tom Cruise stopped letting Katie Holmes out of the house. After she was declared presumably dead, they had to replace her with someone nobody would miss if something like that were to happen again. That leaves Maggie Gyllenhaal, Keanu Reeves, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Choose your poison...
If there ever is going to be a robin, I think that boy is suppose to be Tim Drake. He has one of Batman's gadgets, and Batman saved his life. Plus Daws says his name in front of him, he must of heard. Come to think of it he is also wearing a red t-shirt, that was delibrate.
Rachel: "Bruce, I'm pregnant."
Batman jumps off roof.

and that boy grew up to become Joffrey from game of thrones, thanks a lot batman
Omg is that Joffrey?
This scene gave me goosebumps. BOMBSHELL!

Video posted 12 years ago and it's being recommended to me now?
I ♥ that quote. Thanks for uploading.m =)
Batman befins, TDK and the upcoming one Cant wait to see the 3 movies in a row!! best trilogy ever
A great quote and scene from Batman Begins.
This is the most badass quote ever
Best Batman movie ever HANDS DOWN, period.
I really like the music edit at the end... pretty cool!!!
Great combination with the music(molossus) when Batman finishes to say...and starts to plane
its the 'defining' scene of the whole movie,
the one in which Batman shows us why he is called Batman!
haha it's cool, man. thanks again for posting the clip =)
nevermind, I have found the song.
For anyone interested, it's 'Antrozous' from the OST.
I can't wait to see a real live action Batman Beyond movie!!!! :)
HAD to watch again. I Love It.
Believe It...
Behave It...
Feel It...
Then Know It...
And You Will Become it >>>
A revolutionizing line
best quote of the movie . he has a much darker and lower voice in The Dark Knight
best acting advice ever
I loved that scene!
I used this in my GCSE RE exam it really helps!!!

Nice touch with the music editing.
more like the greatest actor EVER.
"What I dooooo"
haha
yeah, that's the voice he shoulda used when he delivered dramatic lines in the dark knight. like the scene were he had that long dialogue with harvey dent, telling hime he was a "force for good".
"...it's not who i am underneath, but what i do that defines me..."
The "bad" voice is useful, though. Completes the "dark" image and doesn't easily allow the bad guyz to find out who he is.
The greatest quote in the movie industry!
It's not who I
am underneath but what i do that defines me
Batman :It's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me
Rachael : Bruce
Batman : Jeez Rachael ..Not in front of the Kid..
and thus, the War of the Five Kings began, the Riverlands burned, the small folk slaughtered, all because Batman had to be a fucking hero.
"Bruce?"
"Shit! Gotta make a cool exit!"
wrong music at the end... the original gives me goosebumps
Yea, I actually liked Batman Begins a lot. I love to see the rise of a hero.
Batman: "Its not who i am underneath, but what i do that defines me..."
Rachael: "Bruce?"
Batman: Shit.
*Jumps off roof*

@warmerup he wasn't chubby, he was pumped. He got thin in the dark knight because of the new suit.
True, at one point he did, but I don't think it was because of this scene. John Blake's parents died in a car crash, not in the gas attacks.
my own belief.. damn good quote of my own life even.....
you right!. i used this batman quote first time i made love to my girlfriend she was in bathroom and i took clothes off and got under blanket when she approached i said "it's not who i am underneath..but what i do that defines me"
wolverinebesthero 🤣🤣🤣
So does this make Batman an existentialist?
that is like my favorite part in the movie
LoL, that was epic! :D
would be so epic if his cape didn't work at that moment xD "ahh time for me to fly away like a badass >:)" *Jumps off building* "wait..OHHH SHII--*smashes into building*

@monsterinyourpocket it's saying you make the person you are. Your actions create that person underneath.
I was 3 when this came out
Thanks batman
"It's not who I am underneath.
It's what I upload that defines me."
Great idea!
thumbs up for the music in this movie
he should not reveal his identity... he aint doing this for aplause, thanks nolan for finally capture that in dark knight
WhOa the original music was better for this particular scene, not the one you changed to, in my opinion. The music when he jumps off, is really why I love this scene, that sound fits soooo well.
in a way it was a reversal of what they did with nicholson joker in batman 89: revealing the identity through citing a signature phrase
why did they change the rachel in the dark knight this one was perfect
Do you think this is based on Sartre's Existentialist quote? "There is no human nature, because there is no God to have a conception of it. Man simply is. Not that he is simply what he conceives himself to be, but he is what he wills, and as he conceives himself after already existing - as he wills to be after that leap towards existence." - Sartre. Because of course, reading comic books is like, totally hip and mature.
BADASS QUOTE!
yep. joker - "a little fight in you, i like that"
batman - "THEN YOU'RE GONNA LOVE ME"
=]
Batman's voice in Begins is 10000000% better then in TDK.
You're calling THIS a production....WOW
thanks a lot
If only he talked like this in TDK.
I just can't take a guy who chooses to fight crime dressed in an animal costume seriously, nor a crimnal dressed as a clown. Happy Anniversary to Batman! also. :)
does anyone besides me think bats looks a bit chubby in this scene? must be the tight mask.
Best scene
It's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me. That and my massive psychotic episodes that I have in my sleep.
funny when she says you could die Batman must be like thanks for the confidence
Batman - "It's not who I am underneath. It's what I do that defines me"
Rachael - "Bruce?"
Batman - "Oh shit, I forgot you told me that..."
*jumps off building*
"bruce?"
"oh shit, covers blown *suicide*"
He also uses his normal voice, not the scary one.
best part of the movie
@jkprojects no, he got thin because hes a real batman should be smaller and quicker than real muscular. and the new suit was made because the last one was too heavy and christian bale had a hard time moving.
nice vid
i want someone to make a vid with rachel saying this quote then when batman says it.
so ppl understand why he says it.
Getting a tattoo of this quote soon!
Batman - "It's not who I am underneath. It's what I do that defines me"
Rachael - "Bruce?"
Batman thinking - "Oh Shit! She recognized me!!! GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
this would make for an epic parody
nice sound editing (Y)
480p Isn't High Quality...........

rachel:bruce?
batman:fly away and fall down
what a badass
You cannot change the music there!!!
Geez man, have a sense of humor, the top comments are fine.
I loved the movie, and this quote, i was talking about it ages, then one school assembly, guess what they showed on the screen xD.
DAMMIT BATMAN WHY DID YOU LET JOFFERY LIVE?!?!
anyone know what ost it plays in the background as soon as he dives off after the quote ?
king joffrey has been saved by batman
@jerryku never thought of that relationship... now that you mention it it could have a relation to that
@foodbug
I think its his mask that makes it look that way.
