Tracks like "Boom Boom Festival", "Draw Your Brakes", "Mr. Harry Skank", "Swing Easy", all taught me so much and started me following the original versions of so many riddims !
When I was starting out playing, i realized that the real teachings were in those old school tunes and so I absorbed Jackie Jackson, Boris Gardiner, Bagga Walker, Fams, Flabba and Robbie. I consider that transition into rockers to be crucial also in understanding the tecbnjque and articulation and they are my signature now.
Oh yeah! Underrated bassist in my opinion and definitely my favorite. So many great lines, "Come on little girl" is a scorcher. And awesome to see you're back
Outstanding stuff Don! I play bass and sing in a rocksteady band here in California, and we do a couple of these great tunes. I'm so happy you mentioned Duke Reid and the Treasure Isle catalog, it ruled the rocksteady era until Coxsone/Studio One overtook it when JA music transitioned into reggae. Much of this decline was due to Reid's forbidding (for the most part) Rasta lyrics in his studio. But the Treasure Isle catalog, with the Techniques, Paragons, John Holt, U Roy, Alton Ellis, the Melodians etc. holds some of the greatest Jamaican music ever made. And of course the marvelous bass work of Jackie Jackson was key. Besides cracking the US charts with Desmond Dekker's "Israelites," Jackson also powered (along with the great drummer Winston Grennan) Paul Simon's worldwide reggae hit "Mother and Child Reunion." Simon wisely went to the source, recording at Dynamic Studio in Kingston with the cream of reggae musicians, which of course included Jackie Jackson. World of thanks again Don for making this video! btw is that shirt you're wearing available for sale?
Thank You Bassie HD. There is so much more I could have put in this video but as it was my first in a while, i thought I would dust off some cobwebs and just get it done. I know I have a a lot of beginners and rookies to reggae so I have to be careful not to shoot over anyone's head. Thank you for leaving the knowledge for any one who reads your comment. Much appreciated. oh The T Shirt should be visible in the store under the video.
Jackie Jackson's playing on Toots' "Funky Kingston" and "In the Dark" is as good as it gets! Another of my favorites of his is actually Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion." It seems so technically simple, but it's hard to get the feel right!
Woohoo. I am so glad that you're back. 🎉❤ you are my favorite reggae bass teacher on UA-cam, you're super authentic and easy to follow. Let's practice! 🎸
Another great video Don. Merci mon ami! So good to have you back on the UA-cam and rocking’ it as always! Rocksteady lines are so much fun to play! Big up!
Dude, Welcome Back. Welcome Back, I figured you were on tour or something, I'm still getting my head around which reggae style suits my playing ability.
You back for a while Don... I hope so, just starting my Reggae Bass journey... need your guidance brotha.. Also, much respect and sorry for your loss... Peetah RiddumUp!
Well done, thanks ! I've been a huge fan since the owning the Treasure Island Time double album and then the Trojan box set, such a great bassist ! I especially love his sense of movement, his subtle variations and how they propel the song.
Hail up brother, I'm wondering if you can do a bass tutorial of your video backing track( are you ready for love by Morgan Morgan Heritage) BIG UP AND THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO! ✌🏿
Yo bredren I been working up a Shakespeare set , solo live bass, Sly on my computer. I beat match with an Akai for 808 club thump. I’ve been working on Pharaoh Plague./Yabi You, I’d appreciate another look at it… during the breakdown into the intro pattern with the F octaves , then the E octave pedal to the low E , then I hear it coming back right to the F …don’t hear the C that you describe Having a similar issue with the main riddim, the resolution to the A flat minor is fairly underwhelming and pitchy is it perhaps E to C? Welcome back
What good news! It had been too long since last video
Fantastic to see you back Don, glad you’re keeping well
Glad youre back!
Tracks like "Boom Boom Festival", "Draw Your Brakes", "Mr. Harry Skank", "Swing Easy", all taught me so much and started me following the original versions of so many riddims !

The big difference is that Jackie Jackson graduated from keyboard and could sight read.
