The Taxi riddim is my favorite Sly and Robbie riddim. It's the simplicity of it that makes it ride so hard. From now on when we hear thunder, it's just Robbie getting tuned up! RIP to the bass legend and all around hero to reggae fans everywhere, the Great Robbie Shakespeare ❤️💛💚
Yes very bad 2 years, we lost many heros. It’s like reggae is nearly dead omg. We lost Bunny, Lee perry, Robbie,Tutsi Hiibert, Apple Gabriel and many. Rip my heros.
Blessings and respect to Donstrumental your such a kind good man to take the time to remember one of reggaes masters, Rest In Peace to the Bass legend Mr Robbie Shakespeare.
Long Live Robbie Bassspeare! In my opinion one of the greatest examples of the brilliance of Robbie's approach combined with Sly's innovation are the "Nightclubbing" and "Living My Life" records by Grace Jones. The collections sound fresh and ahead of pack to this day. Nightclubbing is one of my favorite records of all time honestly.
RIP to a legend. I was lucky enough to see Sly and Robbie with Michael Rose do a Black Uhuru set a few years back. Just learned about this now, too. I'm surprised it didn't show up on mainstream news considering just how prolific a musician he was. His legacy will live on.
Bass is the essential part of reggae music without it reggae won't sound well. I love this music with all my heart. Eddy Roots Defender in South Africa.
Sly & Robbie were the best Reggae rhythm section ever, they really complimented each other, they have played & recorded with some of the most iconic musicians ever.... the music world has lost a great talent....luvved his bass playing...RIP Robbie..
Hi Don, what a great tribute! Especially the Wailing Rudy tune. Back in the day the sound mandem use to test their speaks with that riddim! Great playing as usual. 🙏🏿💯👍🏾
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I remember seeing the great Black Uhuru band many times over the years, just amazing. From one Bass Player to another I really appreciate this.
Big up Don been watching your videos again as id not been playing my bass for some time and you have been a insperation to pick up my bass again thank you sir and rest in peace Robbie Shakespeare
Love your content! Haven’t played my bass in 20 years which is sad. Life moves so fast. You inspired me to pick it back up and have fun again. I hope you understand how much it means to me. God bless.
dude you've changed my life with bass playing Rasta revaluation I'm in love with roots radices and sly and Robbie family and Carlton 2... I picked up the bass not even 10 months ago however played guitar drums for almost 16 years I never played bass consistently outside of at music stores and at some parties or owned one to practice tell now. I bought my first bass and amp this past fall. I love it I started at 24 last year now 25 and I play everyday all day I love reggae bass! one love I an I Selassie Jah Rastafari
Don,, all your videos carry a thumbs up for me. Every single one.....At the sight of things you'll become an institution on YT pretty soon. Keep up the great work
Big tune! And I should have said, absolutely loving the videos man. It's pretty invaluable being the only channel out there that's solely dedicated to reggae bass playing. ✌️
Wicked bass line! Robbie was one of the greats that provided the soundtrack to my life. Still can’t believe he is no more, what a man, what a bass player! R.I.P Mr. Shakespeare ,thanks for all the memories and good vibes. Taxi!
Thank you Don, Sly & Robbie were unshakable as a rhythm section and the huge legacy of records they played on is a testament to this. I love his simple E string riff on Shine Eye Girl. To me, that IS the song. Well, the hook at the very least. Love your channel, low key and easy to follow. RIP Mr Shakespeare, respect.
Really a fantastic video depicting a musician who championed the cause of reggae music. Robbie was an outstanding music creator who made some awesome sounding basslines that helped us to love the genre called reggae. Thank you for this dedication my brother. Keep up the great work.👍🏽
Music, not just Reggae, lost a master when Robbie passed. I was fortunate to see Sly and Robbie play a few times back in the mid Eighties . Nuff respect for featuring "Heart made of Stone" . Big Tune. That was spinning on the turntable every Saturday morning back when I was in High School. Keep up the great work!
So so good. My hero is gone but will never be forgotten. True legend of Jamaica and reggae music. PS: would you say your Barefaced cabs are the best in class for reggae? Been eyeing them lately.
I've tried everything and the Barefaced is the best i've come across. You need 2 with a good powered head for maximum damage. I use a Mark Bass 1000w head.
Long live Robbie! I think it was sometime near the end of 2020 (I think), I was at BBMC studio for a session. I brainstormed an intro Bass lick inspired by "Heart's made of stone". Awesome video! Looking forward to more!!!!!
Hey Don! Thank you for this channel and great tribute to our late great Robbie. My former supervisor gave me a bass guitar and told me to try it, out of the blue. I've been learning Alto sax for about 5yrs and yet this bass surprise came up. I've been learning a lot from you and wondered why didn't I start earlier. Maybe I could be ringing the bass like a bell in a reggae band. Keep the lessons flowing as prescribed by His Majesty. Hope to see you at one of the reggae festivals. Irie and Raspect!
Thanks so much Don for those unvaluable resources :) I'm doing some timestamps : The unmetered Taxi riddim : 4:14 World a music Ini Kamoze: 6:13 Heart made of stone The Viceroys : 10:50 Wailing rudy Gregory Isaac: 14:07 King pharaoh plague Yabby U: 18:03
Oh wow...I was listening to a Reggae play list, and there was that piano lick in "A heart Made Of Stone!" ...instantly recognizable. And, Oooo...I know this bassline! I learned if from Don on UA-cam :) I was a total newbie in Reggae music just a month ago approximately. Now it's familiar. Now I know where you got the piano lick from in the backing track. So distinct...and I don't think I've ever heard it before in any other recording. And that Sly and Robbie recording is great... I love it
Man oh man... You got me interested in bringing out my long idle bass again. Have played more bass the last few days than ever. Never played music on it before, just exercises and nonsense. Now it's happening, even if I'm at a low level! Definitely advanced enough for me. Not used to, as yet, to the emphasis on the back-beats 2&4, or other configurations. Somehow it gives a feeling of liberation. Maybe that's what it's all about.
An unbelievable stroke of luck for 2 bass players to be playing for the same artist on the same gig. You may notice the yellow speakers in the corner of the picture. This is 2008 when i turned Robbie on to Mark Bass. I called Mark Bass and they sealed an endorsement deal for Robbie. The yellow speakers started appearing on stages all over the world after this day.
Nice episode Don. Appreciating the care and detail you put in to the backing tracks too. For any noobies I'd most definitely start with the Black Uhuru album called 'RED'
Don, as usual a really good video. A not reggae track like Union Sundown of Bob Dylan (the whole Infidels record by the way) is an another example how Robbie a versatile bass player was. Of course in companion with Sly a perfect drum and bass section
Hey Don, I think both Serge Gainsbourg reggae albums are a must. Aux Armes et Cætera (1979) and Mauvaises Nouvelles des Etoiles (1981) both with Sly and Robbie at the commands!
@@donstrumental1 hi Don. I believe these two serge Gainsbourg albums are crazy from a rythm perspective. With the i-three and a complete freedom given to Sly and Robbie. Amazing.
ZOMG!! We used to play “King Pharoah’s Plague” in We The People!! I just learned the tune on the gig; they called it “Yabby You” and never bothered to mention where it came from. I’ve been trying to find out where it came from ever since! Mystery solved! Lloyd Parks LOVED this line. I’ll never forget the expression of pure joy on his face every time we played it.
Hey Andy, I’m so humbled to have shone some light on a era you were such a major player of. Hopefully we can have a conversation about some of those fly on the wall moments you experienced in those amazing studios.
Don, thanks for these examples of 'the bass creator'. He is a legend. Really like your basslessons. I really like the way Robbie plays on the Nordub album. Out of the box and excellent. His creative approach to setting music ensures that this album has the right atmosphere.
Big up,,, respect to robbie shakespear,,, too many already gone,, but I have a question,,, can you do a episode on "Bitty McClean " bass lines,,, I love bitty,,, and of course we all love sly and robbie.... maximum respect to you for showing us these beautiful bass lines.. im super great full.
Bad news for the music world. I got my reggae bass education listening to Black Uhuru for years, even now jamming Plastic Smile and Guess who's coming to dinner when i warm up. As luck would have it, I saw the Riddim Twins one time with Peter TOSH. Mind Expanding. Thank you Donstrumental for your tireless work teaching bassists around the world.

Sad news about Robbie but you're remembering him in the best way possible. Keeping the music alive. Thank you Don, another great lesson.

Greetings Don,
I'm not really a youtube commenter, but your lessons and free resources have been amazing.
Give thanks.

That last bass line is incredible. Never heard anything like that one. What a vibe!

Robbie brought rock to reggae, just look at where he holds his bass👊🏾

A true legend. So sorry to hear this sad news. Thank you for helping to spread his wisdom.

Cheered me up on a gloomy, grey day.

Great channel, thanks. . Flag dub - King Tubby is my favorite Robbie track.
Flag Dub is not the real title. It's also not by King Tubby either. Real title is It A Go Dread by Barry Brown.
I was fortunate enough to meet him in LA at Bob Marley Day, that huge laugh when I said "Wh'appen Bassy !?" And he responded "Yes, Bassy !"
Keep up the good work in memory of a supernatural bass guitar master. For a start, I learnt how to play 'The Unmetered Taxi'. It's very cool!
Shine eye gal bassline is wicked

very interesting to know!
