What do the North Pole and our cabin have in common? We're both experiencing a polar vortex!! If you're not familiar with the term, it's basically extremely cold storm of ice and snow, normally only found at the North and South poles of our planet. But occasionally, the storm comes down south, and temperatures drop as low as -40! This can result in icy weather as far south as California, Texas and even Mexico. In the past we've escaped to warmer weather in our van, but this time we've decided to stay in the eye of the storm and embrace the weather in the woods! As you can imagine, braving a storm with limited supplies and power off the grid poses additional challenges. One of our main sources of heat is our wood stove, which makes things precarious when we run out of wood. So we raided our stash and got enough to hopefully last the storm. And speaking of logs, we finally got our Cinderella incinerator toilet working!! Yes, it literally burns our poop! And no, we won't be using that as a heat source. We made due with our wood stove, though it was still freezing. And while not having to go to the bathroom outside was a game changer, we gave a little peak behind the scenes on how frustrating it's been not being able to wash the dishes--something that's easy to take for granted. But despite these challenges, we were still able to find joy in the beauty of the storm, and reaffirmed that we can truly handle anything life throws our way, as long as we have each other! Do you have any tips on making it through the cold months? What keeps you going? Comment below!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Our first blizzard at the cabin… what a wicked storm!!! Thank goodness our TUSH is warm now though, we’re celebrating our new INDOOR TOILET 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🥳 Honestly though- Do you have any tips on making it through the cold months? What keeps you going? Comment below! 💛
Good Sunday morning Vanwifes. I'm glad to see youre both doing so well - fit and fantastic. Most assuredly, one thing that keeps me going through the cold months (on Sunday mornings at least) is watching your videos - you multi-talented offgrid women, living and camping there in the Great Outdoors. 😍😍
Keeping warm, snuggle up together, not only will you be keeping each other warm, you will also be smiling.
Love from Mike. ❤❤
Pellet stove is way less expensive - the initial cost is higher but it pays for itself quickly. Adding sone wi D turbines will help with power when there’s no sun or when the solar panels are covered in snow.
As a fellow off gridder I salute you! ❤️💕🦄❤️💕
Brrr stay warm. Here in VA Beach we have the 4 seasons but not much snow....
Y’all should get blackout curtains. It will help keep the warm in during the Winter and cool in the Summer. Just keep them open when you don’t have to use them. Plus they have some pretty Boho curtains
Your situation reminds me of February 1985. It was -40 degrees. We got a fire call. I was a volunteer. My car barely started, even though it was plugged in. It took minutes to get my engine running on all cylinders. My automatic transmission didn’t want to engage. My power steering barely worked and made bad noises. When I arrived at the scene I left my car running. The fire sprinkler pipes in the building had frozen and caused the pipes to burst. There was no fire. Thank heaven for small favors. Carry on, ladies. My best to you.
I'm only 12 minutes in, and I stopped to say I appreciate how Jaz goes on the roof and Crystal keeps the fire stoked; both as a form of love, respect and appreciation towards one another. You two make a great couple. I love seeing how well you treat each other and work together 🥰
There are many male/female couples that could learn a lot about love from these two great ladies.
Amazing ladies! Adding curtains for nighttime use could keep an amazing amount of cold out of the cabin! My wife and I enjoy every week’s release! ❤❤❤
Our hearts are full, such beautiful kind words you have shared with us. We are so happy to have you in our pack! 💛🐾
@@Vanwives Hi how long have you had your cabin.
When I was a kid we lost power for a few days. We used snow melted on the wood stove and heated to wash the dishes. Don't forget to clean your chimneys, this will prevent a chimney fire. Sending you both prayers and thanks for sharing your journey with us. Eventually you may want to have curtains over your windows when it's that cold, and also at night. This will help with heat loss .
2 wood stoves mean twice the snow that can be melted and heated up. As a kid, we moved into a house that was heated with a wood stove, so we could cook and have hot water for other uses. No indoor biffy though, so I know what it's like to head outside when it's below -40. 🥶💨
You gals Rock 🤘
@@codycopithorne6294 the small of food cooking on the wood stove brings back memories. My grandma often prefers cooking on the wood stove over the range.
Great advise on the chimney fire
Christina, I was thinking the same thing! You can use old blankets and old quilts, and I would definitely nail one up and have it closed on a regular basis once the sun disappears.
You really need to get curtains to keep the cold out, it’s amazing how much heat is lost through glass. Izzy and Bella need booties to keep their poor paws from freezing, imagine how you would feel standing in the snow in your bare feet 🥶 no wonder your poor pup was limping when she came back inside.
Snow can definitely harm dogs paws

A tip for dish washing put a big pot on the wood stove for hot water to add 2 buckets or bins get your soapy water in one and clean water for rinse in the other all in the comfort of being inside.
Well said I am surprised they had not thought of this earlier. This how we heated our water during our tent camping days decades ago.
This is how we would heat water long ago in the days before the electric hot water cylinder was installed. A pot for small jobs could be left on top of the chip heater while it, via a wet-back, was heating water in the overhead tank for baths, laundry and so on.
Would have been my backup plan. It would bother me to have dirty dishes too. 😊
I just left a similar comment. Im surprised too, they haven't thought of it or been told by someone. I was thinking to save drinking water to use clean snow. Plenty around.
I was searching to see if anyone else had noticed this. Surely, it would be option 1.
Well done. FYI, for roof work, throw a rope completely over the roof from one side of the cabin to the other. Tie it off on both sides. It gives a hand hold for climbing. Bonus points if you tie knots in it before hand to give handholds or even loops in it to give places to clip into.
Well, living in a arctic country i know you did just fine. I heat my cabin with wood, and also a heat pump, but that works only down to -25 C. It is vital to always expect the worst, and prepare for it, and then experience that it wasn't that bad, only cause you prepped for it. -40 is cold, but also invigorating for body, mind and soul. I love the sound the snow makes under your feet when it is that cold, i love the sound from the forest when the trees shoot, and the air is so cold it feels like menthol in your lungs. I also love the lovely heat from a woodstove and a big cup of hot chocolate.. You did good! ☺💛
Oh Elisabeth, your inspiring words have filled our hearts. You have a beautiful outlook on life. Truer words were never spoken. We feel everything you have written! So grateful to have you in our pack.💛🐾
I really think Masonry Stoves (kachelofen/kakelugn) should be more of a thing as they as ssssooooo efficient (don’t need as much wood & radiate heat for 10+ hours depending on size so can get a full night sleep without topping up the fire), heat the whole home & you can design them to cook & heat water - excellent back up for cold climes ❤
Canada is not an artic country specially nova Scotia
@@oneshot9662 if you are referring to my comment, Canada has three territories above the polar circle that has arctic climate. Also, i was referring to my country and even if i wish it was, it is not Canada. 🙂
Until they outlaw wood burning…good luck
Its always handy to have 1 or 2 "backup" heat sources, especially off grid. having a back up propane or diesel heater is a great option, even if its just heating 1-2 rooms.
For example having a MR Buddy heater as an emergency back up to give you 24+ hours of heat in 1 room in case of disaster. The buddy heaters are 4000-9000 btu which is good enough for 1 or 2 rooms.
On the flip side you can get 30,000 BTU diesel heaters that will run for days, talking 72 hours on a 5 gal Jerry can.. at full power output. So as an emergency backup... its a very good option,
Jaz has an amazing way of seeing the bright side of any situation. Her attitude is awesome. ❤
You're so kind Mandalee xx thank you xx
You have all of the things you need to do those dishes without lugging them around. Go collect snow from outside, melt it and heat it on the woodstove. The bucket you use to carry them will make a fine sink. Wash rinse and lay on a towel to dry. I can't believe you're actually from there and you didn't figure it out lol. I'm from Michigan and I can't tell you how many times we did that when the power went out from winter storms.
In all the years I've been watching, this is my favorite episode - it is everything that makes you both so wonderful: love; challenge; determination; independence; adaptation; VICTORY......Bella and Izzy (!). You rock!
Get something over those windows. That's half your battle for heat. ❤
Well done! A tip from someone who works outside in the Northern Canadian Prairie Winter. Leather gloves when working with metal (or anything for that matter). Insulated with wool is best. Anything synthetic just freezes and the leather is wind proof too. And if you're going to be spending prolonged time outside in the real cold, look into upgrading to fur. Don't think you're really going to need it in Nova Scotia but with climate changed, these prolonged cold snaps are becoming "normal". Fur is sustainable and if properly cared for can last a lifetime. It also supports indigenous communities. (and yes, I said "upgrading". Fur is exponentially superior to synthetic fibers.) As for other life-in-the-cold tips, a pot of water on the stove helps to maintain humidity inside and bring the toilet seat inside if you're thinking of using the outhouse in cold weather. Just reverse the seat bolts for that you can put the seat on the posts to keep it in place when using it. My sister uses an insulated grocery bag to get it from A to B.
there's nothing like a heat from a woodstove. heat from wood to me always feels so much warmer and better than from gas. hopefully your cabin is well insulated.
13:25 is actually how I see our winters. I am quite old so I remember what the weather used to be like, we haven't had harsh winters for years (I come from the Ottawa valley). It is not an easy thing to do to keep a cabin warm with a wood fire in the dead of winter during a cold snap. Kudos to you ladies, you have our good old Canadian grit.
Thank you for acknowledging the reality of off grid living in winter. It’s not impossible and you can “build” for winter living but more people should mention the hard work. Worth it…but still work.
There are hundreds of not thousands of channels to watch on this platform yet there are only a handful that I look forward to watching every week.
Thank you for being here 💛
Same!!!
Same!
True
@@ernie7065 I’m still waiting for their response on that. They left a comment saying the wasn’t exactly the case. I’m waiting to hear from them before I pass judgement. Regardless, I love their content!
I've watched plenty of these vids and often click off when everything seems so in place and rosey. I am impressed that you show the true side of what this lifestyle entails. And even more beautiful is that in the midst of the trials and tribulations you both find the time to reflect on the beautiful and satisfying moments. Its been a wonderful reprieve to watch you. :-)
You survived not only your first real winter but a polar vortex on top of that. You now have an inside toilet which means no more frost bitten bottoms. I love your energy and forward movement. But the biggest challenge you continually surpass on a daily basis is how your relationship grows in the midst of everything. Just shows that love and commitment can conquer anything ❤️
Hope you have a great week and see you next Sunday. Love you guys...be blessed. TJ & Loki 🐾
my partner and i bought a house last year and us too, weren't prepared for the Nova Scotia polar vortex! our pipes ended up freezing and we had no water, 1 hole in the ceiling and a huge mess of our basement later, we were able to find the pipe before it exploded! additionally we only have electric heating and it was too cold for our baseboards to heat the home, so we could only get it as warm at 13C so you guys did pretty good with that wood stove, i am impressed! We learned from the polar vortex that if you keep your water running when it dips below -25 (basically turning the tap on and letting the water run) you can avoid a frozen pipe, Im not sure if thats possible for you both to keep your water on all night but if you can this will help next time! also we learned about pipe warmers - go to your local hardware store and purchase a few they do use power but they are like mini furnaces designed to wrap around your piping and they'll kick on when temp. starts to fall (or you can turn them off for times you done need them) BTW i am also 27 and learning how to take care of my own home, so i really enjoy watching your videos and getting the motivation to become more self sufficient and sustainable!!
These are the times I worry a little about you, but you two prepare well and seem better suited than most! Take care, be safe, stay warm!!
Thank you! We put our serious hats on 💛
They sure do thrive on challenge and uplift us all!
I messaged them a couple of years ago and they responded so polite and friendly. Such a beautiful couple who clearly are so in love. They are just so cute together. x
Yay! It was hella cold here in VT too, and my heat kicked out. No permanent damage but it was a long day.. And Jazmyn, that is the true definition of courage, to have fear and face it and to move forward anyway. Way to go on the roof. And, I am so laughing and crying with you when the second generator caught and ran!
Yikes! Stay warm & safe Colleen 💛
When I lived off grid we had a extra large pot of water on the stove to keep moisture in the air and wash dishes also.
Brava ladies and pups!! High fives and high paws for you all! 💛🙌 🙌💛🐾🐾💛 Sending you all warm hugs from Texas! 🐂🧡 Job well done, life well done for your little family in woods! SO proud of you all! 🙏🦅❤
Aww thank you for all your kind compliments, Karen from Texas!
Sending warm hugs and love back to you from the pack.💛🐾
To be honest with you, I have enjoyed your video so much, I could cry! You both are so enthusiastic and fun loving. I wish you two would make a longer one.
I lost my wife 10 years ago, I have not been the same since. However I must tell you, you both put a "big" smile on my face that I haven't had in years!!! Thank you so much. Keep those beautiful smiles on your faces. Just be honest, faithful and loving toward one another and you will have a wonderful life, both of you. May God bless you and keep you safe. ❤️
Thank you so much for watching our videos and leaving this comment. Welcome to the pack. We post new videos every Sunday… I’m so sorry you lost your wife, I cannot imagine how much you miss her. Glad we could make you smile 💛
I love you girls! I am so envious of you, and proud of you at the same time. I am a 61 year old lesbian, who was forced by family and church to be married to a man for 20 years. It nearly killed me. Literally I almost killed myself more than once. I would give anything to experience what you girls are experiencing right now being together and having this amazing cabin experience. I do have four beautiful children, so I focused on them I guess I would not trade them LOL. They're the best thing I've ever done. Number one fan keep going, I love that you have so much fun together. It reminds me of my college days when I was actually living with my girlfriend. You give me so much hope for the future. Keep going, you're amazing!🎉🎉🎉❤
Everytime I think what else could they do you both pulled together your loving relationship is so amazing that it warms my heart! Congratulations on being such a loving couple and for sharing your life your troubles your challenges with all of us I'm truly blessed to have you share your experiences with all of us thank you for your post I look forward to every Sunday
You two never cease to amaze me. You hardly show fear and always confront your challenges head on BRAVO !!!
Ahh thank you!!!
You two are the eagle- always rising high and above, and the sun- keeping each other, and us, warm. Sending you a warm thank you hug while snowbirding in AZ desert!
Automatically having wood stacked next to your house all the time. Plus extra stacked close by.
Also having your windows covered will help with keeping warmth inside.
They make insulated covers for your water pipes. I use them on both hot and cold pipes. I keep them on all year round.
Good luck
You guys did great for your first deep freeze. I currently live in Labrador (where Tyler used to live) but I have also lived in the NWT and Nunavut. There is something about the deep freeze and winter. I would have probably melted snow on the woodstove and put it in a bucket to wash the dishes. Then throw the water outside when I was done
As a future trip: you should look at taking the van up the dempster highway - maybe under the midnight sun. You can cross the arctic circle and take photos at the sign. You can drive all the way to Tuk and put yourselves in the arctic ocean (I've done it). I love late August because the bugs aren't so bad and you get the fall colours of the tundra (it looks like the land is glowing).
You would also like the Inuvik Greenhouse and be inspired by growing under the arctic sun.
You are so right, we try to embrace all elements in every season. Thank you zz plant lover for sharing your trip destinations with us. Sounds like a life changing experience, a trip of a life time.
💛🐶
Next time I recommend hanging thick blankets on the windows and door to hold in more heat.you would be surprised at how much heat goes out the windows.
What can I say about you two that has not been said already, I think you two are so amazing. - that cold weather made such a lot of different challenges, and you two made it through the lot.
I hope my love warms you two up, from Mike. ❤❤
Glad you both kept the wood stoves going thru the storm... Thank you, for honesty and being real in yalls process of off grid. Stay warm and safe.
You girls are absolutely adorable together ❤ Never miss a video. -40 I can’t even imagine, as I’m from Australia and the coldest I’ve ever seen is -2. You girls rock and every week you make me smile and warm my heart. Thank you ✌🏼💚
Aww Fiona, thank you, we know we found our person in each other. We are so grateful to have you in our pack, and honoured that you have , “never missed
a video” you warmed our heart right to the top! 💛🐾
You two are the best! It’s always a good thing to spend a little time with you. Your so lucky and blessed to have found each other. It’s sometimes hard not to cry a little. Keep up the great work !!!
I'm so impressed with your tenacity! You are both amazing. So happy you have a indoor toilet and you survived the polar vortex. Looking forward to new adventures next week 💛💛
Hey Mary, indoor toilet equals game changer. We are so excited. Thanks for always tuning in. See you next Sunday.💛🐶
I lived off grid in a yurt in northern Idaho with two babies for 4.5 years and we moved to another property where we having running water and power and ladies let me tell you… you are doing it!!!!!! It’s sooo hard and totally tests you in ways you maybe didn’t know possible. And yes me and my hubby definitely look back at those years and can laugh now 😂 it’s what builds character and memories ❤ good luck stay warm!!
i really like how positive attitudes and smiles help heat up a cold place. thank you for making my sundays:)
Hey Jimmy, thanks for your kind compliments. You are right, we love to also see positive attitudes, smiles and kindness, makes the world a warmer place.💛🐾
Aww, you two (and your helper friends), are amazing, as always! So happy you have your indoor toilet now and made it through the polar vortex with all your preparation. Hope you can snuggle down, rest and relax, takes so much energy to do all that you do! Congrats Jazzy on the roof climb, install. I'm scared of heights and get vertigo so totally relate although I've never been on a roof! Have a great week!
These 2 ladies are an inspiration to the world.
I wish everyone in the world could find their life partner and have the level of love you two share. Vanwives is hands down the best love story on the internet. Thank you two for being. You give me hope.
You should mount 2 more solar panels on the side of the van and put them on a folding mount so when your driving they are down and when parked you open them up And more power
I want you to know how much I look forward to your experiences. Watching you navigate a freezing AZZ blizzard, totally proud of you.
Hey Robin, thank you for sharing your kind words with us. We are grateful to have you in our pack. 💛🐶
That evey winter for us. It gets so old fast. Cabin fever sets in, its awful. Blah going through it right now again with you guys. I totally feel you ladies.. Thats when the gym and saunas help.
You have a beautiful green house and sauna. Its still inside but it some what helps.
Stay warm ladies.
Love you girls what a bundle of joy you are.
Yes curtains help with keeping heat inside especially at night . Also melting snow for water usage is awesome in front of fireplace or on top wood stove … thanks for sharing glad you have your cabin more winter friendly now with wood stove and the indoor bath with toilet ..
Building a garage for both the Van and the Ford Truck would great project in the future. What getting snowmoblie for some fun on the snow ?
You should look into getting triple pain windows and a new door. I changed mine made a huge difference. Summer and winter.
Ridge hooks attached to a single ladder that can be hung over the top ridge of your roof make it much easier and safer to climb a metal, slippery roof. You both are so inspirational. Stay safe.
The people that live in north pole melt snow n never have dishes after the meals dishes get done also by having the snow over your stove brings moisture which is very needed burning wood dries up everything good luck my ladies❤❤
this one has to be the most heart-warming vidoes I have seen for a long time. You have both worked so hard to achieve so much, and in the process, really nailed off grid living. Jaz is very courageous going up on the roof especially in such terrible weather. Leaping for joy when the generator started will stay with for years! and so memories are made 🐕🐕🌹🌹🐧🐧🥶🥶
When my wife and I first moved to North Carolina in 2001, we moved from South Florida. The Temps dropped into the teens which is a warm spell where you guys are at. I would stay up all night stoking the fire nd keeping the house warm so when my wife woke up, she was warm. After the sun came up, my wife would watch it so I could sleep. Team was work
Proud of both of you for facing such severe conditions together. So impressive to work through fear on that roof! And for working to keep negativity and overwhelm at bay when unable to do simple tasks like washing dishes. As always- you ladies are inspiringly strong. ❤ 💥 💪🏻 ❄️ Thanks for the video- and for keeping the pups safe. 🐾
Just found this chanel. It is so great that 2 sisters can do this together and support one another and work together.
That's how us lesbians roll, brother...from Home Depot to home no matter where it is.
Thanks for putting up some really entertaining videos! Living up in the north of Sweden, the climate is quite similar - making it even more fun to "follow along" (I just wish my off-grid cabin was nearly as nice as yours... haha)
Thanks for making us apart of your Sunday’s 💛❄️
You gals are amazing... I have lived in Michigan for 73 years and have this kind of weather before.
A $10 pack of the sturdy paper plates with a rim are a good investment that can be rinsed off after the first use and used more than once. And then burned in the wood stove and used as a fire starter too for a last time of use.
Regarding heat trace, you can get a thermostat, which just looks like a power plug, but will only pass electricity below 38F. So you can keep the heat trace always plugged in.
You guys are doing a lot correctly. Put more wood indoors so it's
accessible or on the porch and cover the wood. Make some thicker fabric window treatments so they keep the warmth of your stove in. Those large water bottles should be indoors not too close to the firebox and you can use warm water for yourself and do wash up dishes, etc. Keep your boots near the heat, and any wool socks! The rest of the water should be used for drinking, etc. For things to keep busy indoors, learn to knit, create a large comforter, make socks and wool hats. Read, write, letter writing to family and friends and
Painting, painting on wood or an old handsaw, cook, bake, card playing, play chess, get rest, and keep the firebox going, keep warm, solitaire for couples, checkers, computer games perhaps, taking care of each other and keep in contact the local 1st responders and let your families know how you both are
doing. Keep up the good work and never give up. You guys are risk takers and the challenges ahead will be conquered one day at a time...and don't go outside if you don't have to. Take care and God Bless! 🧐🌲🌲👍
Keep a a pot or kettle of hot water on your fire for washing dishes in a bucket. Mix with cold water to adjust temp - and dishes done 💕
Okay, I must be hooked on your channel. I can't believe how happy I was that you two got an indoor toilet.
Ahhhh! We love sharing our lives with you 💛
I can't believe there is such a thing as a poop burning toilet, and an inside one too. 😆
Same. As someone with interstitial cystitis that would have been the most life-affirming movement! 😂😂
One thing I forgot to suggest. A suggestion for you getting up to stoke the fire, is to look into pellet heaters. They come in all sizes and capacity. You fill them up once every one to two days, and they burn continuously. Pellets are sold 50lb bags for about $5-6 at Lowes Bld Store. No more chopping wood, as I have one and I love it.
Thank you for sharing we will look into this for sure. 💛🐶
OMGosh!! You two are so sweet! I love how much you appreciate each other, and you don't hold back on it!! It's very inspiring!
Hello y'all I am a type of person that likes and follow, I don't talk unless I have something good to say. I am so proud of you girls. You guys have done way more then I can even do. Keep up the great work, so proud of you guys
Glad you survived the polar vortex!!! Good job girls!
My firewood warms me many times. 1) chopping the tree down. 2) slicing it into rounds. 3) splitting the rounds into manageable pieces. 4) stacking the pieces. 5) bringing the pieces inside. 6) burning it. 7) emptying the ashes out in my compost pile. I live in VT and when it gets down to -40, I play outside. blowing bubbles is fun. They shatter when they hit the ground. Throwing boiling water in the air and watching it turn to snow instantly. I've also got genetic markers from Svalbard, so it may seem crazy, but I'm comfy in the cold.
Happy someone else thinks it warms you 7 times. I learned that saying cutting wood for my first house that was heated with only wood burned about 8 bush cords. But there is a bonus it got me into good shape fast.
@@keithlennox8195 My "peak physique" hits around the end of September when I've been processing wood for a few months. Then, instead of showing it off at a beach, I get to cover it with lots of layers and get fat and lazy all winter.
Wow! Well done you two: I'm so impressed by how well you thrived through that ordeal, looking after each other and those two puppy dogs. You're amazing!
Well thank you James, we appreciate all the kudos you shared with us. See you next Sunday.💛🐾
When I relied on a wood cook stove for heat I learned how to “bank” ( packing wood tight for slower burn time….reduces oxygen) my wood and used coal to keep the fire alive during my sleep. I advise you to research wood and coal for your stove. 💕💕
You ladies are amazing. I know hard it is to live completely off grid. Thank you for being so inspiring and for everything that you put out into this world each and every day. So happy to see the cabin coming together so nicely. Cannot wait to see what is next for you both. All the best to you and yours. Have a great week. Take care.
You gals are simply the most wonderful!! If you use the Polar Vortex as a simile to the mind, your lesson of diligence was marvelous and quite fitting. Jazmyn, I am so impressed! In the middle of vortex hell you went out of your way to prep the sauna knowing it would bring Crystal to a happier frame of mind. That was Love!! Always a pleasure to see you gals, see y'all next Sunday!!
To do dishes, find you a very big pot. Fill it with snow or emergency water. Put it on the wood burning stove. Once the water is warm enough you can wash the dishes in the pot. Then dump the dirty water outside when you are finished. Also can be used as bathing water if you cant take showers. Hope that helps!
I'm watching your video while doing my dishes in our off grid cabin, which requires us to break the ice on the lake and fetch and boil the water. I struggle to get the motivation in the winter months (Ontario), but it's all worth it in the end. The beauty and the quiet is so peaceful. Keep it up, you're an inspiration to all of us!
Oh, And our generator also didn't start in the polar vortex, the oil was too cold. We had to bring it inside to warm it up. :(
That is a crazy experience! Happy that everything did work out at the end and you were able to survive the polar vortex.
Trying to keep the sauna running is a beautiful display of love. It's absolutely the thought that counts.
Hey Michael, we survived and had a wonderful learning experience too. Yes Crystal is my gal and she loves her saunas. It’s the thought theR counts.💛🐶
What about using a basin of soapy water & basin of clean water to do dishes.? I grew up on homestead with no electricity, dirt floors & that was way we did dishes
There’s nothing you can’t do if your determined, hard working and with the people and pups that you love, way to push through it ladies, we’ll done! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼🔥
Ladies my hat off to you girls. I agree with Christina about melting the snow. It will help you in a lot of ways.
Your love for each other makes my heart so warm. Y'all really give me hope. I cried multiple times during this video cause your love is just so sweet! Thank you as always for sharing your adventures. 💗
Thank you for your kind works. Sure means so much to us. Happy to have you in our pack.💛🐾
The last Polar Vortex in my area of Illinois reached -10 F.
I was working a Post which had me in the cold three days in a row. I had Inmate Workers bringing me extra pairs of gloves and warm washcloths to wipe the frozen tears off of my face. I had no idea I was crying!!
Bless those guys for keeping me safe. As a Corrections Officer, I don't expect Inmates to give a shit how I am.
They have proven me entirely wrong over the past 6 years. We understand that we are on opposite sides of the bars, but we are all human.
It’s crazy to me as a person who lives in Australia 🇦🇺 and am currently experiencing an extreme heatwave in Western Australia that I’m watching you guys in a polar vortex. Thankfully you guys made it through but it’s still mind boggling that opposite sides of the planet can experience such different temperatures. Thanks for the ep. Stay safe and Warm ❤❤❤
Same from Sydney! Although I did grow up in Central New York (the snow belt) so I know what they’re going through.
Same in QLD hot as I grew up in Scotland where winters can be quite cold but hardly ever -40 unless you are up the mountains in a blizzard. Respect for all the efforts around the cabin
I've skied in minus 20 twice. It was brutal. I can't imagine minus 40. You are two tough folks! Great content. Made me shiver even though it's a hundred degrees here in Arkansas!
In my day we called it winter
Must be really nice to have all of that equipment to work with!!! I mean 80 thousand dollar van, 50 thousand dollar truck, your cabin, and your wood stoves etc...seriously, zero struggle there.
Oh, and a generator...and lots of money lmao 🤣 😂 😆
How lucky you 3 im in England and would love to experienced this just being cosy when it's horrendous weather outside,.👍
So incredible to see you thrive in those harsh conditions. Im so glad you made it through the winter storm! You two can do anything together 💗💗
Much respect t for sharing raw truth. That is what makes you authentic.
Together you took on a polar vortex and powered through. ❤ you back.
✨️ You guys have become legitimate experts in content production. Every aspect of it. Love you guys 🇨🇦🏳️🌈
I think they have a whole production company helping them.
They do have someone else edit for them and give them credit in the description. A lot of channels do this.
@@Flowergurl2000 Only one person - same person they have worked with for years!
From experience and living in Iowa, you can hold some heat in by putting something up to your window. We put up heavy drapes in the winter as we have lots of windows and sometimes even blankets. Let me tell you it helps. Also doggie boots for the critters. Frost bite on pads at 32 degrees can happen.good luck and thanks for sharing!! 🦋❄️🦋❄️❤️
This is such an inspiring peek into your lives as you winter at your cabin. You prepared and managed to overcome obstacles, I almost cried when you couldn’t do the dishes Crystal and when the sauna couldn’t heat up, Jazmyn. But that cozy time with stew in front of the fire with the whole pack snuggled up was precious. See you next time.
Aww Kathi, your words are so beautiful and gave us the feeling you were right there with us.💛🐾
Yes curtains will help a lot also spend a little more money and get clear plastic and put it on the outside of your windows. The clear plastic lets you see outside. I am going to get heavy clear plastic sheets and custom frame each window that I can install with mounting clips for easy installation and removal. Stay safe
Hi, Do you have any plans to have window coverings, blinds or curtains? Do you think it would make it warmer in your cabin? Or enable you to use less fire wood.
Hey Peter, that is a great question, not sure about window coverings. You make a great point would probably make it warmer for sure. You have given us something to think about. 💛🐾
A trick we have been using since our water heater died is to keep a large pot of water on the wood stove that you can use for dishes or whatever you need during the day. I got a large stock pot and I can fill A bucket and take it to the kitchen sink or bathroom to do dishes or take a bath and wash my hair. We used to do this when we were camping when we were little kids.
Every experience you have shared with us makes me feel like I'm right there with you. This one had me cheering you in while I shivered under my cozy blankets! You girls are beyond amazing. Boo-hoo to those silly Survival shows. You two teach and live true survival skills!
Aww Vicki, we feel so honoured that you feel that you are living our experiences with us. We are so happy to have you with us on our journey and in our community.💛🐶
Take snow in big pan and heat dish water on your wood stove.get some kind of roof on poles for your generators it really helps.thanks for sharing
Your van needs a building of its own for protection from the freezing weather
That would be nice!!!
OMG Jasmine surprising crystal with the sauna is the cutest frigging thing. She keeps us warm at night, so Imma be sneaky and surprise her. love it!!!!
I've been in Wyoming in 1988 when the temperature with the wind chill was 70 below. In Canada with a nice 50 below at night and 20 below during the day. Both places were a dry cold. No humidity.
You know I never make it all the way thru videos because of how bad my adhd is but this was wonderful. You ladies rock out there in the freezingness!!!I live deep in the northern Maine woods. So I feel you on all the shiznick you have to do to prepare.❤
