I loved this comparison! I own the 28-200 and love it on my a7c. I can attest to its IQ compared to the 28-75 G1 which I also own. My choice for travel will be the 28-200 and I will leave my 28-75 and my Sony 70-200 f4 at home. What a weight saving with no discernable loss of quality . For me, it is a no brainer!
Solid review! Own 28-75 G1 and the famed 28-200mm. The 28-200mm FTW hands down, even on a demanding a7R IV. The versatility and IQ works in the real world and is my everyday companion. No need to have a travel and non-travel set of lenses. Pair it with the 17-28 for the holy duality (tm).
Great comparison! No doubt the 28-75 if the better lens optically. I own the G1 and the 28-200. The latter stays on my camera almost all the time. As a landscape photographer I value the versatility of that lens far more than I value the slightly better optical quality of the 28-75.
i'm also a landscape photographer. the 28-200mm is on my camera 95% of the time. I also carry the 18mm from Samyang for those rare occasions i need the wide angle. I wish they made a 24-180mm f2.8-5.6 then i would only have one lens.
@@NickL0VIN 24mm would be nice, but to me it's not a very big deal that it starts at 28mm. When I shoot wider than that, 24mm usually isn't wide enough anyway.
Bought my a7iv with the 28-70 kit lens and was so disappointed that I sold that lens after 3 weeks. I then bought the Tamron 28-200 based on this video. Big thx bc it's amazing! I'm a hiker/climber in CO and so I take quick landscape shots from summits at 14,000+ feet in elevation. Don't have time (or weather much of the time) for manual controls so keep it in auto. Auto shoots daytime pics at f10 or f11 so no need for the constant 2.8 of the 28-75. Amazing results with the 28-200;)
I was more inclined towards the 28-75 G2 lens.. can you tell me how often have you gone beyond 75mm percentage wise, during your hiking and other trips.. this will help me decide on which lens to buy
@@sulogno-The 200mm is crucial if you see wildlife and want to get close. I've gotten some incredible shots of majestic mountain goats only possible with the full zoom. If you're only doing landscapes then definitely get the 28-75 G2. You will rarely ever use all that zoom for landscapes bc of the atmosphere effect.
Thanks for the comparison! The 28-200 just went on sale for $650, so even better value now, good timing since I just picked up an A7c and looking to get my first lens.
Great video! I’m an amateur and use the 28-200 on my a7iii for virtually all outdoor photography. Its weight and range are just about perfect for me. I purchased the 70-180 for indoor sports and it works phenomenally. I am considering adding the 28-75 for indoor low lights that don’t involve sports.
Another great comparison! I was actually considering the 28-200 vs the 35-150 for travel. I haven't handled either. I tend to prefer lighter lenses, but that faster glass is hard to resist.
@@NickL0VIN Thanks for the feedback. You convinced me to go 28-200. As always, great job here with the information you share through your detailed videos.
I ride a motorcycle so for me and travel, space is a factor. I opted for the 28-200 and if I plan on a specific thing, I'll use a prime for that thing. As it is, I set the 28-200 at a focal length and use it that way. For instance, I'll set it at 50mm and run it that way, zooming with my feet. The variable aperture is much easier to account for that way and the difference in photo quality is barely noticeable side by side with the prime, so you really can't tell. For me, it's an easy choice.
Hi. I'm stuck choosing between the two lenses. I have an A7II and I mainly take candid pictures, family events along with the occasional landscape and street photography. Nothing professional. I am also going to travel with the camera. If I can get both of them within similar prices, which one would you prefer and why?
Thanks for your review. This help me a lot for make decision. The 28-200mm is suitable for me to travel or take a video in casual event. I prefer 35-150mm f2-2.8 too, but it’s too heavy for all day shooting.
I like the way you do reviews. I own the Tamron 17-70 2.8 VC and I'm thinking if it would be worthit if I sell it and buy this 28-200. I do 65% photos 35 vids ... I'm more worried about the variable aperture than the IQ. IQ can be adjusted in LR anyway...😊
What do you think about the 28-200 combined with a couple of smaller prime lenses for travel? I have the 24 mm GM, and consider combining it with the 28-200 mm + Samyang 75 mm f1.8.
@@j_quads Nice to hear! If I didn't have the 24 mm GM I would have went for the Samyang or Sigma 24 mm. But as I already have the GM I'll go for the Samyang 75 mm, as I don't want two expensive lenses for travel.
@@bioliv1 I had the samyang 24mm f1.8 and I also have the 28-200. But in practice I found that for the difference I never felt that the change from 28mm to 24mm was worth changing lenses for! :-) I suppose having a zoom lens which covers from 20 to 40 ;-) or 17-28 might be more realistic because if you do change lens to go wider you can just leave it on for a bit because you can still go up to 40mm or whatever... but after a while you'd still ache for the longer reach. I also have a 35mm 1.8 Samyang which is more useful, because often indoors the 1.8 is better in lower light, subject separation, plus that's a good portrait size.. plus it's just about wide enough for small group / selfie type photos. Where as the 24mm was a bit wide for general use, yet not not wide enough to bother changing down from 28mm of the 28-200. I rented the 35-150 and that was a truly fun lens... every photo just looked pro! It's of course quite heavy (but if it's all you're carrying - on an A7C in my case it's actually not that bad. I had it on a sling type strap so it hangs down just above your hip), and unfortunately quite noticeable (that was probably the bigger disadvantage for me - it makes you look like paparazzi!). So having both the 28-200 to blend in a little better, and the 35-150 might be a good option, but maybe the novelty of the fancy f2-2.8 will fade.. not sure, I'll rent it a few more times and let you know ;-). For landscapes and wide shots you might also consider a compact wide zoom like 20-40mm tamron. But how often you'd actually flip tot that depends on what you do of course. For vloggers it's a completely different story.
@@brenwarren2301 Thanks for an extensive advice! I do landscapes, I prefer cultural landscapes around Lake Mjøsa, Norway. I was thinking a lot about that 35-150 mm. My portfolio is at my About Page. Never look at my videos, our chickens could make better videos than me🙂

Hey, great comment from you. I’m thinking to get for one of these lenses. What’s the best aperture you can get at 75mms from the 28-200mm lense?
Ended up with both. One for travel and hiking, the other for indoors and general use where range isnt an issue.
