Keep in mind that with the resources that Joe B has earned, he donates more than most of us to guitar and music education, and to other artists who deserve to have a chance to record an album.

Seen him on TV and UA-cam numerous times. I attended a concert that was very enjoyable but not totally over the top great either. Joe seemed to play to the crowd so much that he seemed a bit irritated at times that the audience was a bit subdued with some of his playing. In my opinion there are many great blues guitar players these days, both recording and touring that put on better shows. Cudos to him for his embracing this vintage style of guitar playing and equipment, wishing him the best. I will vote with my wallet when I find some of his playing to be a bit more compelling. That may happen one day, until then I will be voting for the myriad of players out there doing it more succinctly.

His father owned a guitar shop, since he was a baby. That’s why he’s had access, and collected vintage gear for so long.
It’s been a business, buying another five figure or six figure guitar, amp, etc. as well as everything that costs less, for a long time now.
You really think he’s paying the luxury tax on all those ridiculously priced Les Paul’s?
I’m sure he has many, as a private owner, but it’s a business.
He and his father have been doing this for over three decades.
I have nothing against him, but I also just don’t have think about him unless he’s brought up.
I’ve known his story, since the 90’s.

@@CorbCorbin It's not just JB, but a lot of people. I collect vintage instruments as well, mostly Moog, but I'm just a nobody who likes to use authentic vintage sounds on my own recordings. Because of folks like JB and other wealthy individuals, we are all priced out. The amp in my avatar is a '64 blonde 6g6B Bassman. JB has the tweed market cornered in the same was Leno's car collection is a whole generation's worth of wealth. It may be a business for him but I suspect he's really just hoarding them for investment purposes.

@@Rhythmicons He says that he will sell anything that he has. He collects this stuff "so he knows where it is". Those are the words he used. He's not really hoarding anything. If you want a Mary Kay strat (which are stunning), he has a whole bunch to choose from. He keeps his collection in playing shape and that's a big-time favor to the next person that plays it. He's the kinda nut that probably fixes all of those amps. What a terrible person. ;)

Joe is one of the hardest working musicians in the biz, and he's a nice guy. He does fund raising for the homeless in Los Angeles as well as other charities. He didn't know me from anyone from off the street, but through an acquaintance, I was invited to attend his band's, at the time, rehearsal before they went on a tour. While the band was taking a break, he invited me over sit and chat with him. There were probably less than a dozen guests in the studio for the rehearsal, so it was very intimate. At the time, Carmine Rojas was his bass player, so I got to meet him as well. They even gave me their cell numbers to be able to stay in contact with them them. Joe is a total guitar nerd. His love for guitar's and amps and the history of them is a driving factor in his obsession to collect. He even admits he is an obsessive compulsive personality. I'm sure it played a part in his relentless practicing and learning of mastering guitar through out his life. He has admitted that his obsessive nature is a primary reason he stopped drinking. He knew if he kept getting deeper and deeper into it, like he has with guitar, that alcohol would probably have consumed him and ruined his life. So, good for him for having the ability to recognize the potential danger for him, and avoiding being the next sad story of great artists becoming addicts and dying way before their time. If he keeps going the he has been, he will go down as one of the most legendary guitarist of all time.

I grew up in the same area as Joe. We had the same guitar teacher. Joe was born with a gift, and I'm glad that he didn't squander it. Joe was able to achieve success without selling his soul to the record companies. Joe has a true passion for guitars, and I couldn't think of anyone else who would be able to keep and preserve such a wonderful collection. Even if some of us had his guitars, we wouldn't have the resources to maintain them. Joe is like the Jay Leno of guitars. Joe may not have lived the blues, but he has respect for the blues. While Joe is jamming away on his 59 Les Paul, I'll be jamming away on my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded T...and working long hours and paying heavenly bills...the bills that kill.

I got to see Joe Bonamassa at an intimate show at The Troubadour a couple of years ago. His playing was undeniably fluid and what you’d expect from top tier blues guitar music. I didn’t really like his singing voice though and even though I thought he sounded great at guitar, my takeaway was he was someone that I personally couldn’t see myself becoming a devoted fan of. I kind of see what you’re saying about him being hated though. To me no one has picked up where Stevie Ray Vaughan left off in the genre of blues guitar.
Having said that, whether or not I like or not like a musician is less important than say that musician’s ability to inspire a kid to pick up a guitar. For the latter reason, he’s okay in my book because I could see a kid hearing him and being like, “yeah that’s what I want to try to do.” So yeah, Bonamassa to me even though I respect his talent and ability his music is missing that certain something for me to get really into.

I've seen him live twice (and have a ticket for the Albert Hall this year) and was utterly blown away both times - Over the years I've seen some of the guitar greats and he's right up there. And, as a guitarist and guitar geek, what a treat it is to see these iconic tools of the trade showcased - rather him than some investor locking his 59 Lester or Dumble amp away in a bank vault. And, John Mayer is really, really good but doesn't belong in the same sentence as SRV (in my opinion) in fact great guitarists probably shouldn't be compared they're all doing what they do in their own way and we gat to hear it - lucky us 🙂

Totally agree with you chris. Definitely no reason not to like him. Regardless of whether or not he's the go to bluesman. He's definitely earned his position. The only thing I have issues with
Is that the mainstream radio doesn't play his music even though he's been all over the world recorded with countless people and has earned the accolades to show for his work. He has my respect.

Im a blues player and learned by ear in the southern US where it all started,. Joes passion comes out in his playing and it`s undeniable, Just like Stevie Ray and John Mayer, John built his carreer off bubble gum candy rock for girls , It broke him into mainstream and Stevie and Joe didnt get that. For traditional blues I dont think of John so much as I do Stevie and Joe. and if Stevie had not died OMG. I think Joe Bonamassa Loves with a passion the blues and the gear so much that is all he has ever done. Ever.. He will go down as one of the greats.

I’ve followed Joe since he was sixteen or seventeen. He was great back then and has earned everything through hard work, he even spent time with one of D.C.’s greatest, Danny Gatton. He has gone down a questionable path with having Kevin Shirley’s producing IMO. That’s my opinion. As far as guitar collecting he grew up around that from his father, I wish my father had that hobby but he was too busy working 3-4 jobs. In summation he has earned everything he has and more power to him.

The first time I saw Joe was at Toad's and it probably cost me about $40 tops to do that. Since his coming out as it were in 2009 after playing the RAB the cost of seeing Joe has increased exponentially and I don't begrudge him one penny because I think he's earned it but I personally as a fan from the early days of him playing clubs can no longer afford to experience his talent first hand anymore. To think that it know costs over $600 for a 3rd row seat in a theatre is mindboggling

I saw him in 2005 at The Flowerpot in Derby - first time in the UK. It was amazing. His Vox 847 broke during the set, and he ripped it off his pedalboard and gave it to one lucky audience member. Not me unfortunately. He used a Budda combo and mainly his gold sparkle Strat. Seen him a few times since, but the first time is always the best.

Hardcore fan here, sorry for my bias but if all the haters would seen him live once, I think they would switch to the other side. He and his band is INCREDIBLE live, best concerts I ever attended. Also met him on a blues cruise, super nice and he has a great sense of humor and sarcasm, this is interpreted lot of times wrongly on the social media but he is an absolute full of passion towards gear and giving all back to the audience and the blues community. Haters gonna hate but you gotta respect the working musician in him, touring more than hardly any.

The only thing that annoys me about guys like Bonnamassa and Mayer is not *them*, but the cults of worship that follow them, to the point where they are considered the foremost authorities on "gear". If Mayer or Bonnamassa like something, it immediately get elevated to rarefied status. I don't mean to say that a Klon Centaur, for instance, isn't a good overdrive pedal, but there are other pedals on the market as good and even better. The number of times other guitarists drop their names make me think that a lot of guitarists just can't think for themselves or use their own ears.

Joe B. I think deserves all the wealth, he’s earned it. I like his music and not only his great guitar work, his voice is perfect for the music. I don’t know why people hate on him, because he can play a harmonic minor scale?? The man wants to keep Americana and its history of instruments and things. What’s wrong with that. Listen to Joe play Sloe Gin and say he can’t play the Blues. Come on man lol. The man is a guitar geek with all the cool things we want. I give the man credit and many fans alike picked up the guitar because of him. Hell, if I ever get lucky I’m calling Joe to come with me to choose my next ‘59 wouldn’t you? lol

Seems to me, he’s the hardest working musician of all time. And not for a short run. He’s been creating great music and live performances, at an incredible pace, for many years. His playing steadily improves as does his song writing and his singing has improved exponentially over the last 4 or 5 albums. His live performances are all studio quality and his supporting artists are obviously happy, appreciate and well supported.

Well done, Joe, I say.. If you want a serious career playing guitar, then you need a unique angle. Mayer carved his own path and fair play to him.. SRV could have stayed with Bowie and made his fortune but chose not to, so the path also has to be true for you. Its always "my favourite is better than your favourite how can yours be more famous?" As an example, in my area over a one week period I saw Eric Gales in a club venue (few hundred), then Jeff Beck in an arena (few thousand) and finally Ed Sheeran in a football stadium (79,000 crowd)..... so usual applied again, haters were "OMG sheeran cant play to save his life....." but truth is the other two couldn't have filled that stadium. As a huge Gary Moore fan, I am glad Joe is helping to partly fill the void.

When you are touring a lot and bring out 26 or so albums (of which 7 live I believe) it is normal to spend money on what you like (gear to make music).
Joe is more succesfull than his peers due to media as different times in general we live in. In the 60's,70's & 80's people were a bit more into one genre or artist. Nowadays it is pretty normal to listen to multiple genres, due to exposure I think.
Got two albums myself (Live in Amsterdam & Seesaw) and just found out there is an acoustic album live recorded in Carnegie Hall 😮
Everything moves away from roots, a tree grows from the roots to the branches and leaves...
