      @Sunamer Z the car always tells u to stay on and put pressure on the steering wheel to confirm that u're paying attention. And as enjoyable as driving is for me too, tbh in busy roads autopilot is really a great option, i don't think as much as u love driving u actually love the stop and go traffic segments, do you ?

      @Sunamer Z its just to know that the driver is still paying attention to the road, the car received 5 star rating on safety for a reason (not only in crashes), it won't drive over kids lol. Besides of course the driver is responsible and in fact the car always puts the disclaimer every time you want to engage autopilot it always tells u to stay up and pay attention to the road and take over if needed, tesla never kept that a secret.

      I sat in a model 3 and didn’t think the interior was rubbish . Okay it’s not an Audi interior but the model 3 is designed to get the price down when providing a large, expensive battery pack . Better to keep the price at its current level than splurge on a super premium interior which is less important to the average customer .

      Why do you think this is honest? A honest review would put a BMW M3 against this model 3 on track and do a 15 round track battle, before calling this model 3 better than a M3.

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  4 роки тому +4

      You seem to be under the impression that would be somehow relevant to the driving that these cars do 99.99% of the time. On track an M3 out of the box is an awful car if track driving is what you really care about

    • @chunbaouk
      @chunbaouk 4 роки тому +1

      I think we all have pre-existing biases. I respect someone who freely admits and recognise that about themselves, and the mindset they’re bringing to a review (in this case a healthy skepticism of electric cars as machines that can provide driving pleasure) whilst remaining open minded. I’m sick of people that simply seek to confirm what they already believe, and I think people do that because it easy and it comfortable. This happens on both sides. I like reviewers that seem to not be swayed by the fear of pissing off a company that lends out their press cars or hurting the feelings of a friend who’s kindly lent them their car to review, and instead just seems to want to give their honest appraisal. Yeah theres no metrics here, no track battle, Vbox etc but theres other channels for that and honestly, all that tells you is how good a car might be a tiny proportion of the time. I mostly want to know about how a car perform in two places - the ballache commute (90% of my time behind the wheel) and the British B road (the other 10% if I’m lucky!)

    • @anoniem9518
      @anoniem9518 4 роки тому

      @@JayEmmOnCars You are comparing the model 3 to a M3, and declares the model 3 as the better car. If you want to compare apples to apples, you should at least perform a true race on the track (not a simple drag race, but a race consisting out of at least 10 laps). After all, the M3 is designed to be a track focused car, not as a comfortable daily driver.

      They don't spend a penny on advertising because it's an expense they don't need to.
      Literally word of mouth are making more sales than they can currently handle, even with their massive expansions planned for the next few years it looks as though it'll be a long time before they actually do catch up with demand. Drove a Model 3 Standard recently and was really taken with the massive instant torque available from low or zero rpms. The car was a base model with no options, purchase price just over $41K here in the US. For that money, similar to a base BMW 330 here, I think it's an interesting option. Agree the interior and finish overall seems cheap, but the seats seemed comfortable, and there are some luxury features hidden in those menus.
    I've never been a Tesla fan, and really wanted to dislike the car, but just was pleasantly surprised by how much fun the massive rpm-free torque can be. No shifting, turbo lag or launch-mode theatrics required, just press down on the volume control and go.

      I traded my BMW M3 for the Model 3. I don't regret it at all. I have 41,000 miles on it already and it's been perfect. It's faster than the BMW, handles similar due to low center of gravity, the Brembo brakes do still fade after a few laps of late braking from speed. I think this could be solved with a pad swap. The best part is no maintenance! In the BMW I was always doing those expensive proactive fluid flushes trying to keep stuff from premature failure. In the BM I was always looking for smoke after a cold start, listening for that timing chain guide rattle, crossing fingers connecting rods could handle repeated redline runs, etc. The Tesla is just a more fun/less worry "appliance". The auto wiper function is in some scenarios useless, as it does not use a rain sensor looking for rain on the windscreen, instead it uses the cameras to look out of the windows to try to determine whether the wipers needs to be on.
    So to get the rain of the windscreen you have two options, either do a single wipe with the button on the indicator stalk, or turn on the wiper manually, which is done using the screen.
    And a lot of the things are controlled by the screen, taking focus from the road.
    Overall the Tesla Model 3 does all of the EV related stuff really well, but it misses the target on some of the general car related stuff.
    As for the performance, it has plenty of it, but after a couple of months the joy of the acceleration has vanished, and I am just longing to get to drive my Porsche which is currently in hibernation for the winter.

    Great review, James. Having just made the same change as the owner in the video (M135i / F10 M5) to Model 3 Performance, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments. I used to be spending about £400 a month on petrol. In my first 5 months of Tesla ownership, it's cost me £355.32 in electricity (between AC home charging and supercharging). The difference in fuel alone almost pays for the car. Once I factor in my business mileage, then I'm actually making money. Don't get me wrong, the Model 3 isn't the perfect performance car. The M5 would eat it alive over a certain speed, but for entertaining driving on Cornish back roads, it's hard to beat. I agree that it still isn't an electric car for the masses, but it's beginning to get there. The E-Niro, Kona and new Renault Zoe are fabulous EVs. As demand increases, the cost will go down (until the government realise how much tax revenue they're losing, but that's another story).

    There's no answer to any of these questions:
    How will people who currently buy a car for £1,000 - or even £5,000 - ever afford a car that is electric or hybrid? At those prices, the batteries will be shot. Are we happy to make cars un-affordable for the less wealthy?
    Is the government going to put charging stations for every car on every pavement? Otherwise, how are people who live in flats - i.e. most people who live anywhere near the centre of a city - going to use an electric car?
    What about the environmental - and human - cost of all the metals that are in these batteries?
    The government is making this promise of banning ICE engines seemingly without making any of the difficult - and expensive - decisions. I.e. the current government is claiming all the credit for being 'green', while leaving the problems caused for future governments to sort out.

The car specs people seem to care about on a daily basis are 0-60 times and peak horsepower. I daily drive a 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD but I've also got a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT (Vauxhall VXR8 / Holden Commodore VE) with a 6.0L V8 that I actually don't drive much because the Tesla is just so good and well rounded at everything.

If you've got a waiting list already, making a longer waiting list isn't really any better for anyone. Maybe once Giga Berlin gets built, they'll need to start advertising in Europe because all the Euro-spec cars they're currently making in North America will relieve the factory crunch. As someone who tracks both a Model 3 and a Miata, please do not write it off as a track weapon before you've tried it. It's serious kit on a circuit. Is it going to give you the same tinglies as a 720s? No. Will it have serious pace alongside the other super saloons? Absolutely. The car comes alive. It has a bit of understeer but it's a small price to pay for being so blisteringly quick out of the corners. Track Mode v2 released this week introduces power bias control. Flick a slider on screen and make it a fully RWD car, and turn the nannies down or off. Eager to get it back on track this spring to see if it can now be dialed in properly to erase that understeer. Put some performance rubber on that thing and take it to Silverstone will you?

    Do not compare a small everyday commuter's car with sports car. Tesla has a minimalist interior and exterior. Not a cup-a-tea for everyone but look at Tesla S 2012 it still looks modern. Look at Merc or Audi from 2012. They look dated. It's 2020, dude! high time to give up on the German Auto - baroque interiors.
    Tesla 3 is a compromise which beats the uncompromising Germans. Wait an year or two until they drop the price of the batteries another 30%. Imagine this car for 30% less but with even more features, quality and service, and with even wider charging network.

  • @slhslh9038
    @slhslh9038 4 роки тому +19

    Short term reviews like this always seem flawed. It's great that the presenter found the Model 3 to be very surprising and capable. However the specific strengths and weaknesses of the car are found by longer appreciation and will often change. For instance the technology in the Tesla is often held out as well in advance of others but (other than the neat over-the-air updates which mean I am never driving an out of date car) I find most of the advanced driving tech to be less competent than in my eNiro or Mazda CX-5. On the other hand the screen being out of line of your vision quickly becomes the new norm and the idea of a bunch of clutter blocking your forward vision starts to seem bonkers (there is no issue with your knee hitting the screen unless you have your seat in a very funny position for your size). The build quality, whilst not 'luxury' is still better than most other EV's I have owned, and the seats are more comfortable than most too. In general the quality is 'perfectly adequate'. The paint quality on the other hand leaves something to be desired.
    In the end, find another £58K car that is 4 wheel drive, does 0-60 in 3 seconds, (or £38K in 5 seconds), has great handling, improves as time goes on (the car is now faster, goes further, has 1-pedal driving and host of other features, which it did not have when I bought it), is of a 'reasonable' build quality, costs very little to run and fuel, can comfortably seat five people and take a really good amount of luggage at the same time, is not quite as bad for the environment etc, etc. There simply isn't any other car close to it and that is why Tesla have so many fans. The model 3 is not a perfect car, there are many, many things that could be improved on, but - unlike other manufacturers - you have some certainty that Tesla are working on doing just that and those improvements are coming to the car you already own, not one you have yet to buy.

      @SLH SLH Model 3 build quality is on par with Toyota and BMW, but not as good as Mercedes. It's more than adequate. My paint is nearly perfect and on par with most German cars. Later Model 3s are better than very early cars due to the experience effect of getting better at building things.
      Model 3 is not perfect, but on the whole it's better than pretty much any other similarly sized sedan. Better torque, smoothness, handling, road feel, efficiency, styling, automation, fast charging, over the air updates, etc.
      Regarding environment, a fossil fuel car can't be powered from sunshine or wind. An EV can. And the grid is increasingly renewables since unsubsidized wind and solar are already cheaper than coal and nuclear. Therefore an EV gets cleaner as the grid gets cleaner.
      Combustion cars get dirtier as the engine parts wear. At best, they never get cleaner.

I went to a Tesla shop (in a shopping centre lol) and looked at the Model 3 and S and I must say the interiors were awful. Already falling apart in the shop with people in and out , they certainly will not age well inside. I have a Model 3 and a Leaf, and their regen is nothing alike! Except for cold days when the regen is reduced, you simply don't have to touch the brake in the M3. Takes a little practice to learn the braking distances on regen, but once you get the hang of you you rarely touch the brake. I also find the statement that the steering isn't "ultra precise" curious, because both in my own experience and from just about every renowned car reviewer I've read that's exactly what they lauded about the M3 steering, that it is highly precise and quick. Not much feedback, being electric, but super precise. But ok. And regarding the interior, it's actually very German and Bauhaus in concept: form follows function, no unnecessary shape or adornment, just what you need to get the job done. The interior disappears during the driving experience. I used to love German interiors, the BMWs and Mercedes of the 80s and 90s, very driver oriented, every item with a purpose. Nowadays the bling in Mercedes cars is sickening, ridiculous shape choices, excessive use of chromed bits etc. Tesla is what the Germans used to be, I love it.

When I purchased my model 3, I received $3750 for tax (I heard it was 7500 before), $1000 back from my electric and utilities company, and $2500 from the government rebate. That's about 7000. Afterwards, the money I save from zero maintenance and 1/4 cost of fuel, $10000 savings is definitely not far fetched.

      Richard Kok I am sure people said the same sorts of things when cars took over from horses. With the roads the way they are (busy) and laws so strict the days of hooning the streets are gone or soon will be. I don’t find Tesla’s sterile, I find them efficient. By the way that Alfa with 100,000 km on it will be a huge unreliable money pit that is rapidly falling in value. A Tesla will be as good as new.

      Case in point the new BMW i4 that was launched at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. Now that in my opinion is a sexy looking electric vehicle.

    4 years on, these are available for about £22k with 30,000 miles. Thinking of buying one, because not only have they proved very reliable, but nothing else in that price range seems to get close in performance or range. Agree with Jay on the looks and interior though.
