Its quick, concise, aggressive, and I don't know about you but I have NEVER heard Matt sounding this brutal. Paula and Nik are so fun to watch, and I love the little george michal easter egg. Completely blew me away the first time I heard this release, man! Nik, Paula, and Chris wrote this beautifully and Matt Heafy, the Sensei and icon that he is, finds a new way to dazzle me with the next thing that he gets involved with. I hope that rising artists are learning about longevity from industry greats like Matt

People keep saying Matt has been this heavy but are wearing Rose tinted glasses. I know all of his stuff, this is new! Not surprising at all though, the best out there are always striving to get even better at what they are already great at, rather than egotistically saying their the best and then phoning everything from there.
Dusk Dismantled and Skyline'd Severance would be the closest, but this is way more brutal than even those.

Yoo Mark sorry it's unrelated to this song but I just wanted to give you a heads up - Zelli the vocalist of Paleface just released a one take unedited vocal playthrough of Please end me just like Will Ramos does sometimes with their songs. And I just wanna tell you - it's SO GOOD. Like I literally had no idea he's actually THIS good of a vocalist, I was actually shook. So please don't spoil it for yourself just try to check it out for a reaction if you've got the time, it's just worth it

When I first heard this, I thought Matt was doing tunnels, but now that I actually look at it from the perspective of someone who has watched a bunch of vocal tutorials for this kind of stuff, I do hear a lot of fry vocals. Definitely a good idea for me to check in on this cause I am wanting to bring my own experience with cleans to you at some point Mark, already put the thing in on the website and everything
Funfact: The song was never intended to have vocals until Matt heard it. Nik is waay more into Thall in his music, or their music I should say. Also check their Graystone project with a couple of insane vocalists.

Around @18:15 your observation on the sound of the guitars during fast-picking:
I THINK they are using some pretty aggressive compressors, which can be set to make the pick-attack just as loud as the played note... if not a touch louder. Yes, one can get an amp yo do this for you, but then you are stuck with that sound until you change some amp settings (whereas the compressor can be turned on/off with The Stomp Of A Foot.
Believe it or not, this is akin to the compressor settings one might use for some Roy Clarke-era country chicken-pickin guitar work.
