Yamaha VSTAR 1100 Carburetor Rebuild - Part 1 of 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 кві 2018
- This is the first in a two part series on the complete disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of my dual Mikuni CV carbs for the VSTAR 1100 and bt1100 Bulldog. It goes into much much much detail.
Note that after spending the same day on the Delorean AC I said a part was an 'orifice tube' and not emulsion tube.
Further note that canned air was used in the example. I would never do a final cleaning with canned air. I use real air pressure from a compressor at much higher pressures. The canned air is only a prop.
Leak testing is important, you will notice the jig. Notice the jig.... - Авто та транспорт
Thanks for making a good video no cuts and edits just everything one at at a time good teaching 👍🏽.
Mate, I am so grateful for videos like this. So thorough and easy to listen to. Gave me confidence to tackle things on my own. Massive thanks from an average bloke in Australia 👍🏼
Glad to hear it was helpful.
thanks so much for these videos. it gave me the confidence to troubleshoot an issue with my engine sputtering at about 1/3 throttle...a full rebuild did the trick and cleared everything right up! i can use a wrench but would never have attempted to take apart a carburetor without this guide. now i've started doing other kinds of work on my 1100 and it's very empowering to be hands on with the machine. thank you thank you!
Glad to help, you're welcome.
These videos you posted are the reason why I decided to do it myself!! Thank you very much for taking the time!.. My 1100 Silverado wouldn't stay idle and would stall. I called the shop and got the cost of service....I asked them how much to do the valve adjustment since the carburetor would be off...the quoted $350!!! I thought that was absurd! and said FU to that and searched for videos on UA-cam and behold!...my make and model too!...a blessing...I have a shed to do this in, currently have one side apart, what a mess!! its still so cold out here in Mass. so I go out there when I can...it helps me take my time...like you said. So far the #1 elbow tube to carb full of gas and 2 of 3 jets clogged! I'm surprised it even started...I used to work on cars back in the day when you could pop the hood and actually see the motor...that was 20 years ago..so I lacked confidence in my ability to even work on this motorcycle...but thanks to you...I'm in it to win it! Total savings will be at least $1500...It will just cost me time...I'm fine with that...Thanks again!
Im glad you found the video helpful and were able to get it done without being taken to the cleaners. Remember if you are doing the valves in N.E. in the winter in a shed, expect that the lash will not be the same when its 70 degrees warmer some summer.
Amazing production! I am a cinematographer and in the past MS in car design. Impressed with your skill, diagnose and explanation and videography level! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I appreciate your videos . I've spent hundred on getting my carbs re-built and jetted. But after watching your video it wasn't so intimidating for me. It turned out BETTER than what I paid a shop hundreds to do. Thanks for your detailed and informative video.
Glad I could help.
Any details in the jet kit you used and how it's holding up? Sizes, etc?
thank you for taking the time to make this series... I have very limited experience and was able to follow step by step. Semper Fortis...
Im glad you were able to get the carbs working good with the procedure!
Thank you a million times over for sharing this video. I just tackled the carbs on a bike that I picked up earlier in the week. The bike had been sitting in the previous owners garage for a couple of years and the carbs, fuel filter and gas tank were all full of old orangy looking gas. This is my first time rebuilding a carburetor, I think I referred back to your video about 4 or 5 times during the job just to make sure I was cleaning everything correctly. Now the bike runs beautifully so I can't thank you enough for this helpful guide.
Glad to hear it helped and that everything is running. be sure to check the brake oil too...
@@retrotechandelectronics Sorting the brakes and suspension are next on my list. I'll be referencing some of your other videos for that work also. Thanks!
Thanks so much for these videos! I can totally see why you stripped the main enrichener assembly screw. I used a Vessel Impacta JIS screwdriver that turns 1/4 turn when impacted (though with some sort of clutch mechanism), along with vice grips and PB Blaster, and I still destroyed that screw! Thanks for documenting the work-around!
Even with JIS ive eaten through these.... Ive had no luck with them , if i can get the screws out I replace them with hex the first opportunity.
This is a fantastic video. I fixed my VSTAR 1100 carbs this last weekend. My problem was not dirty carbs. Both needle seat o-rings were bad on mine. Had a ton of gas in both boots. Both needle seats fell out when i went to replace them. I opted for the needs seat kits from Yamaha.
Glad to hear that it worked for you, those o rings are often missed.
Thank you so much for these videos. I got a basket carb case 1100 and thanks to your videos i was able to figure out what they had done wrong. Again thank you for the information. Completely saved me some gray hair!!
Im glad to hear I was able to help, there are other videos in the series i've posted that might benefit you in maintenance for this bike.
Just recently installed the Maxair kit and had a carb leaking on the front cylinder. After watching your video I knew exactly what the problem was. Found a gasket kit on ebay without having to buy the complete expensive carb rebuild kit.
Thank you for this video! I followed your instructions and seem to work. I am not done but i always rewatch this video to make sure.
I am in the middle of this project and have to say thank you thank you thank you! I am really enjoying learning this and taking care of my own bike! Great videos
Thanks much, glad that they help you.
You do such a great job explaining and just with videos in general I have used your videos on my shadows and on my Vstars now !!! So thank you
Happy to help!
You covered the exact problem I found with my carbs! They were leaking out the carb vent hose and my floats were not stuck. The o-ring around the float needle assembly on both had no resistance when I pulled them out... they were just sitting in there!!! When I went into the carbs, I too found that fuel was leaking around the needle valves.
Thank you for helping me solve my carburetor woes!!!
Thats awesome that you were able to solve that problem, glad i could help.. I Image that there are a ton of bikes now on the road with this o ring rot in varying degrees of severity causing these types of issues. most people are replacing needled or adjusting their float position.
Retro Tech & Electronics you'd be right...
Thank you for a great video. Gave me the confidence to do my own carbs, bike has never run better.
Great to hear!
Thank god it’s you making this video. I watched the removal process and was hoping you would have a rebuild video. 🤘🏻
Glad I could help
Thank You. I was able to do it myself. You helped save me money! If it is possible to make a mistake - I will make it. The small main jet has a brass washer and did not catch that on video but after review I saw you pull it off so then I knew where it went. Also the bowl float metal pin needs to be pushed down with thumb to seat it properly. I missed that and had to pull the carbs off and correct due to gas leak in back carb. Lastly the Air boots on stock air box must be installed in order of number 1 boot goes on front left side and the number 2 boot goes on rear right side. Your video had them reversed which probably won't make a difference on pods but is a world of difference on stock air box - won't fit any other way. Great video and bike now runs great - No backfiring and starts right up. Tried the chemical fuel cleaner too and was a waste of time - as the carbs were filthy inside and out! Highly recommend the air boots get diligently hooked up. Almost right will not cut it. B.D.
Hello, glad I was able to help. It possible my boots are on backwards. I may have made mention that from the carbs up my setup is non standard due to the pod kit. The swapping of the boots, a result of testing which setup would canter the pods appropriately turned out to be the best fit and left like that. Its been so long since ive seen an 1100 airbox.
Next time I work on an 1100 carb ill go deeper in to TPS and drop one into an ultrasonic tank on video.
Had the air box issue from reverse 1 and 2 and it fixed instantly
nice video. plan on rebuilding my carbs on my v star this spring will be using your videos for reference thanks!
Glad to help!
Great video, very detailed and easy to follow. Great job!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hello ...Thank you for this superb Video ..... you had helped me very much to restore my Carburators......Thomas from Austria
Great to hear!
Huge help. Great series, thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you for you video!! It helped me remember immensely!!!!!!
You're so welcome!
very thorough video. much appreciated
Glad it was helpful!
I have to re jet mine , leaned it out with exhaust , and got rid of the shoe box breather. Thanks for video
you're welcome.
Thanks doing this part today!
you're welcome.
Man, you are a blessing from the skies
Glad the video was helpful.
Awesome video, thank you very much!
I hope it helped!
An extremely detailed and very helpful video indeed! Many thanks and much appreciated. I have found a 1.78x1.78 o-ring slipped over the carb cleaner nozzle tube works well in holding the retrograde flow while cleaning the jets and passages in general and the pilot system in particular.(18:28)
Thank you for this video.
My pleasure!
Very good
Thanks for good job. On my Xvs 1100 I did not find points for
carbs syncronization.
It is the lowest screw on the linkage that connects the two carbs together.
@@retrotechandelectronics I did photo of lower part of carburetor, can I send it to you, and you can show by pointer?
just completed my 2 day valve adjustment procedure (it's been 3 decades since I've done any serious wrenching) and I sooo appreciate this video. When done, the 1100 started right up, I was so glad. ONLY now it has a soft "missing" sound emitting from the exhaust. Just every now and then it will "pfft" but it does not backfire or "pop". What do you think is the cause of this phenomena?
When you adjusted your valves was it making a tapping noise around shifting point or at cruising speed with it going away when giving throttle?
Great video ever by expert technician. Thanks. Appreciated. Do you have tps sensor adjusted video. I have issues thanks
One of my 1100 carb videos has a TPS setup portion
Your video is so very thorough; well done! Thanks to your video, taking out the carbs was easy work on my newly-purchased 2007 V-Star 1100. Would you please offer suggestions for two issues I have with the carbs: (1) The screws on the float bowl covers will not unscrew despite using my best phillips-head screwdriver that is very good at getting stuck screws loose; (2) there was roughly a teaspoon amount of (slow-flowing) liquid puddled in the large air tube (marked no. 1) that connects the cylinder to the carb. Note: the bike idles great, but does backfire and miss upon giving it throttle just off idle (similar to the 650 in your other carb cleaning video). Thank you for your help!
1. You can clamp down on them with small vice grips to break the tension. or cut a flat in the middle for a flat head, then replace them with hex from ace hardware.
2. You probably use too much oil.... Its getting sucked into the carb from the breather.
Note: Pilot jet clogged...
Thanks, again, for your advice: Long-nose, narrow vice grips broke the screws' tension. I bought six M4-0.70 x 10 and two M4-0.70 x 12 socket-head screws to replace the original float bowl phillips-head screws. Note: the longer (12) screws are used where the screw also fastens the extra thickness of a bracket or clip. My next challenge: to find and purchase gaskets for the needle jet, because each needle jet had two rubber rings that were hard and cracked apart when I removed them. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks for the videos, I just did my first carb cleaning, came out awesome. Have a question, at the beginning you remove a hose with a grey filter/breather thing, do you know what that is, mine just has a piece of screen inside, seems like there should be something more in there. Thank you for any response.
Sir where did you get the rubber oring for the needle seat? Thank you
Had a 650 Special back in the 80's that had to have the carbs cleaned because the carbs would start leaking about every 2 years when the bike was on it's kickstand.
Thank you for the video. It explains and walks through the process better than a class I paid for. One question I had was is it necessary to separate the carbs? I've done the ones on my 650 with them connected. Thanks again for the vid.
For a complete cleaning yes. especially one carb the diaphragm can only be accessed when it is separated.
What size o-ring did you use to replace the old one on the float valve? Thank you!
I don't recall the actual size. I have an O ring kit and I simply went through until I found a perfect match.
I have a question, The main nozzle fell out when I removed the main jet holder which direction does it go back in? On your video it did not seem to come out like it did on mine.
Thanks in advance!
Made rookie mistake, as i was following through with ur video i mixed up the jet that u say its green on minute 6:52, with the jet tight next to it (the one at almost same height level) one of the holes in of them is noticeably bigger than the other one not sure which one goes where, help if u read this please! :)
Great, detailed video! Was the air mixture screw factory or aftermarket? I have an after fire issue and was going to rebuild/clean my carbs to hopefully eliminate the problem. Were the welch plugs previously removed to uncover the air mixture screw and if so was it as difficult as they say? Your video is going to help immensely!
The screws that I use came with the maxair pod kit, I have an example in one of my videos where I drill out plugs but its from a 650, though same procedure. I believe it to be in this video.

Hello there thanks for the great video! Can you please tell me what brand / part number is the adjustment screw you using on your carbs? Im trying to fine tune mine and its a major pain in the ass to take them off every-time I make an adjustment
It came with the pod kit that Ive installed on these carbs.
Hello, I have a question. I have a gasket on the main jet (6:57 just below the green color). It is also an XVS1100, does the gasket belong there? It is also hard to remove the swim box because of this rubber.
Thank you, great videos
Do you have any tips on finding the setpoint of that screw that you turned 2 ¼ if lost
Great video! Thank you very much. What do you lubricate the new O-ring with?
I used a light coat of remoil.
@@retrotechandelectronics thank you very much!

On the bottom of the carburetor for the front cylinder there is a small nipple that fuel comes out of. What is that? Does it need a hose on it going to the air filter of something? I got the bike used and it has no hose on it but drips fuel.
I , do You know what the fuel cut-off valve do in the carb and if You can explain some fails when it is in bad conditions ? This in 2007 Yamaha Vstar 1100 .... Thanks for your videos help so much and thanks for your time
I dont believe i fully understand. The float needle? If it fails the carb will flood, it will run rich, you may find gas in the intake.
I apologize for posting it on this video but am unaware where else to reach out to you. Bike runs great. Starts up great. Drives great. Has one single issue that I cannot for the life of me figure out:
If I ride my bike for over 20 mins on the hwy, and then park it and start it up again 5 - 10 minutes later, I get a loud pop coming from the engine. Happens right at the moment of startup. Have not started the carb cleaning process yet but wanted to reach out to you on what you think may be the issue. 2003 vstar 1100. 30k miles. Everything bone stock. Even air filter.
I generally encourage folks with these types of issues to do a carb cleaning first to see if there is resolution.
@@retrotechandelectronics Ty sir. I took apart the carbs just like in your videos and cleaned them out and put them together . Started the bike and it started and idles perfectly. But when I go to ride it, it seems to bog down a lot and struggles. I did not sync my carbs yet. Would this be a characteristic of not syncing the carbs after taking them apart?
@@retrotechandelectronics Scratch that. The jet needle holder was upside down. Fixed and runs perfect. Ty
i would like to know what oring you replase that floter oring with. cant find any match in my oring setup.
OH MY GAWD! I have watched these amazing videos many, MANY times! I have also failed to acomplish this task many MANY times! No matter what I do (including most recently have a professional mechanic check my work and find no reason for failure) I can NOT get these carbs to operate without flooding! I even replaced the fuel pump as recommended by a Yamaha mechanic who said that the pressure regulators often fail and they continue to pump fuel. I have reworked these carbs 4 times, and the result is always the same: bike starts, gas pours from both carburetor vents. I sure wish I could $end them to you! I'm ready to torch the thing. Any advice I could share with these so called "mechanics"? THANKS SO MUCH! YOU DO GREAT THINGS!!
There is a float, a needle and a seal , one or more of them is leaking or not functioning or stuck, on one or more carbs.
I'm having an issue post rebuild where it wont start with the enricher(choke) on? It does start without it but not very well. Runs and starts great when it is warm. I am at 3 turns on the PMS, could i be out too far?
Hi, Thank you this video is really helpful. I have a question if you might ever have time to answer. I was working on the same carburetor while following the video, and I should have taken the screw stripping advice a bit more seriously. While I was working on a stripped screw I slipped and destroyed one of my carburetor caps. I'm wondering if you know of a way to get a new one. I looked through multiple parts websites and none have the part. Maybe there is a carburetor similar to this one which you can buy the part and make it work or something. Looking for any advice if you have any.
What cap, do you mean the cap on top that holds the diaphragm for the main jet and spring, if so your yamaha deal has them.
Yes that's the part. I live in Hawaii, I called the dealer on my island already so I guess i'll try the other islands to see what they say. I glued it back together though and it seems to line up ok. Do you think its a big problem if its not fully sealed or if I seal it some other way? It's just a dust guard right?
What rebuild kit is recommended for this? I have been looking on Amazon but am unsure of which one i should get.
Where did you get the oring for the needle seat assembly that was leaking?
Hello, I wanted to ask that is it possible to read codes on 2003 Vstar 1100? My check engine light comes on sometimes and bike shuts down while riding it. Does vstar has the feature to read codes with the code reader thing?
There was no rubber o-ring/gasket under the spring under the mixture screw...is that something that varies by year? I think the rebuild kit I bought has it but I was just curious as to whether or not that may have been an issue
I believe they all come with it, often lost.
Oh man.. when I took old jets out I forgot to count turns.. is there some information on what to do? Maybe go all the way down and back off 2 turns? And is to be done on all jets or just main
The only one to count is the PMS screw. The movie mentions the default turns if lost.
Does it matter what year 1100? I noticed yesterday the connecting bracket is cracked and when I'm looking at them to buy the only ones I'm able to find are from 06 or newer
1999-2009 should be the same on the 1100.
~Brenda
What size o ring did you use for the needle and seat assembly?
How well has it worked for you?
The O-rings come with the rebuild kit.
Would you happen to know what hex bolts go get for the bowls my Phillips are stripped
I size all of my screws on location at the hardware store
I have a 2005 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic. Can you tell me why it is making that whining sound when I release the throttle while I am riding it?
Meet with other vstar owners in online forums, you may find that some of these whining noises maybe in fact endemic to this bike.
Where did you find the hex head replacement screws for the float bowl cover? Do you have a part # by chance?
Take the carb and the screws to Ace hardware and size up new ones.
Retro Tech & Electronics Thank you!
10:25 I got the screw out that was holding that in and I need to replace that same peice aswell but it is a absolutely stuck in there, any tips on taking it out ?
If you are replacing it you can grab it with pliers on the sides and twist back and forth while pulling it out.
Is the hose with the nipple that goes into the bottom of the air box necessary? The one im talking about is with the group of items that contained the two bolts and the cotter pin after you broke the carbs apart
There is no part that isn't necessary. No company would waste money on an unnecessary part and save millions of dollars over the run of the model.
@@retrotechandelectronics it was just a simple question. I picked up a project bike a couple months back and its missing from my bike. Will the bike at least start without it attached
@@nathonarrowood7404 You asked if it was necessary and I answered that question. Seems you didn't like the answer, now you are asking a different question. Do you notice a theme here? I'd encourage you to take your bike to a qualified mechanic.
So I have been following you step by step until I needed to pick the old lady up now I have completed the clean and have started the rebuild of the first carb and I have come across a copper sleeve about a 1/4in wide and can't deduct where it has came from any help or ideas im trying to find some information but any advise would be appreciated
At 11:42 I see a jet with what looks to be the copper sleeve
This is the filter and seat for the float needle.
Do they need to be re sync when attached back together?
Yes
Is the 112 jet go to rear cylinder carb or front
Its whatever you took it out of.
what do you use to lubricate the inside of the carb? just normal gas? regular oil? wd-40?
The rubber? I used a VERY light application of remoil.
@@retrotechandelectronics oh are we not supposed to put any type of lubricant on the freshly cleaned carb? I know gas will lube it up a bit but its old and seemed a bit dry to me after completion. Thank you for the response btw! I'm actually smashing two of these vstars together and got the engine started because of you! i literally have your videos on standby while wrenching on everything.
Which carb do you consider the front carb
I probably should have used a different terminology there.
What is the adjuster doing? The one I’m talking about is at 13:50
They call this the PMS screw...no kidding. Its just the pilot needle. Hence 'Pilot Mixture Screw'. Essentially sets the fuel/air mixture at the nearly closed throttle plate position, aka idle.
Thank you
You’re welcome.
Hi, which carburetor is considered to be the master carburetor? Thanks.
Good question. The one with the connection to the throttle linkages is the master carb

exellent what are your thoughts- on upjetting blanking AIS and the solenoid for revs and after market pipes?
oh and needle shimming instead of jets? or aswel as
AIS is only marginally acceptable for stock pipes at best and will rust out after about 5 years or so. Ive removed mine long ago. My pipes have added provisions for lambda sensors that I hook to a computer which records my ratio under all conditions and I review it on my computer making jet and needle changes accordingly
I got to 6:16 In the video and hit my first snag - 3 out of 4 of the bolts holding the bowl on stripped and absolutely will not budge. HELP!!!
Greetings,
The original screws are terrible and easily stripped if a fitted driver isnt used. Even then, the soft metal can go stripped on the head. There are two solutions used to fix this, though the screw will need to be replaced afterwards.
I use hex as you see for replacement.
1. Use a dremel to cut a shallow groove in the screw and turn it out with a flathead
2. use very small vice grips to clamp down on the screw sideways and break the tension. then turn it out with a regulat driver.
I hope this helps.
SUCCESS!!!! The vice grips worked! Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
