  • Hello Friends!
    Have you ever used acrylic paint, turned away for just a second and it seemed like it dried instantly? This is one of the biggest drawbacks of working with acrylic. This is due tot he nature of acrylics. Acrylics are a water based and this means that they dry through evaporation. Which can be a fairly quick process.
    In this art video I am going to give you some tips and tricks on how to keep your acrylic paints wet!

    Great information. Just a tip on preparing the paper for the Masterson palette. Their instructions say to soak it in hot water for 15 minutes or longer before using it. I think you'll find it works much better this way. Then just spray as needed. It should be damp, but not wet. If it ever dries out completely, give it a hot water soak again, before using.

    I tried the paper towel method, and it worked great! I actually used parchment paper, and it’s a great alternative for tracing paper. This method kept my paints wet for 2 days! They were a little thinner, but after adding some white it was fine. Definitely recommend trying.

    Can’t wait to try this method. I usually use watercolor but lately I’ve been wanting to try acrylic and have been scared of the dry time, your video just made me ready to dive in! Thanks

    Thanks so much, specially for the wet paper towel & tracing paper pallet idea. I bought a flat wide, but thin plastic container at WalMart that had a tight lid and this works great to keep my mixed acrylic paints wet. At first I tested it and the paint stayed wet indefinitely. One artist said to leave a tiny crack between the lid and bottom or the paint may get runny as it absorbs moisture from the paper towel and humidity. But that was no problem with little piles of paint, just the thinner areas.

    Hi Saena, I have tried all the methods before except for the last one, wet paper towels and wax paper. I used that one last week and was amazed how long and how well my paints stayed moist. Yes, i used a take out container with a lid to keep my paints moist overnight, even over 2 nights. Just ideal.
    The other methods didn't work as well for me. Thank you so much.

    Great tips, thank you! 👍 Another alternative, if you prefer a glass palette, is to use a glass baking dish that comes with the rubber lid ... seals to keep paint fresh and super easy to clean with a paint scraping blade ... and they come in all sizes, round and rectangular. Options. 😊

    Does misting the paper towel do as well a job as saturating it? You said it can be use the next day. I’m just curious . I am a beginner and I put my pallet inside a Ziploc baggie with a moist paper towel gently placed on top, put it in the fridge and I’ve been working with it for 2 days. I think my high school art teacher, might’ve actually taught me something after all. Haha

    There is a limit to the ratio of retarder additive to paint in order to keep the paint binder functional. Retarder medium works better.

  • @maritzaajeng7398
    @maritzaajeng7398 2 роки тому +2

    Hello! Thank you for the video! I have a question, can you mix both retarder and an acrylic medium to acrylic paint? I want a slow drying acrylic paint, but I also want to thin the paint with acrylic medium, I was wondering if it will work? Or it will become the opposite if you mix them both to a dot of acrylic paint? Thank you in advance!!

    • @SaenaFineArt
      @SaenaFineArt  2 роки тому +2

      Yes you can mix retarder with a medium! Retarder is technically an additive, so it is designed to be used with mediums. You don't want to mix the medium into the paint directly though. Instead use it on the side and dip your paint into it. If you are also looking for a slow drying acrylic paint, Golden has a a line called Open Acrylics. They are amazing. I highly recommend them.

    Hey! Awesome video! I have a question. How do you know how much retarder to put in? I haven't used it before and i am a bit unsure of how much is enough.

    • @SaenaFineArt
      @SaenaFineArt  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you! And the back of the bottle should have the recommended ratio. I can eyeball how much I need, but that is after a lot of trial and error. If the paint becomes thin and watery then you have added too much retarder. But just add a bit more paint. I hope this helps!

    while using retarder as a acrylic medium ,how much time it takes to dry painting?

    • @SaenaFineArt
      @SaenaFineArt  3 роки тому

      It depends on how thickly you apply the paint. Thinner layers will dry faster (usually in a few minutes)but thicker layers will take longer(that may take a couple of hours). But unless you throw a very thick globe of paint on, it even thick layers of paint should be dry in less than 24 hrs.

    Can you please tell any tricks to paint canvas background. When I try to blend background colours then it comes out. Then I can see canvas.

    • @SaenaFineArt
      @SaenaFineArt  3 роки тому +1

      Sometimes if you over blend it can lift the paint. So I suggest laying down some colors blending and then letting it dry. Then keep adding layers until you cover the background. Thank you for watching!

    Great tips! Can you please help me with a brush related question? Is it okay to use natural bristle brushes (hog brushes) with Acrylics? I heard the paint and water combo destroys it. Is this true? If yes, then whats the alternative, I just don't like the feel of soft synthetic brushes.

    • @SaenaFineArt
      @SaenaFineArt  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, eventually acrylic paint destroys natural hair brushes. How long this takes usually depends on the quality of the brush. This is why synthetic brushes are often recommend. I am assuming you want more stiffness in a brush. You can find synthetic hog hair brushes. Trekell has a synthetic hog hair brush line as does Mimik . so those may work for you. You can also use real hog hair, but just be prepared to replace them. If you get higher quality brush though they will last longer. I hope this helps!

      If it dries on the brush. Bash the bristles with a hammer as it'll turn the dried acrylic to dust or loosen it from the bristle. and then use glass cleaner or paint thinner from the hardware store to remove the rest. Paint thinner might make the paint thts not loosened turn slightly gunk like. But let it dry bash it gently and repeat. It'll be back to normal. Works on plastic bristles, sables, synthetics. It's something I learnt over time.
