Very clever - clearly not Uncle Drew’s first rodeo, and proof as to why we must cherish our elders (we should be grateful for the lifetime of mistakes made for our benefit !)

Looks like a pretty effective way of getting the concrete out. Plus you get the bonus of a pile of gravel to fill in the puddles 😁
Great shot of the drill breaking through - the lens did not die in vain ⚰

The part I like is how much fun your uncle has running it. Smiles from ear to ear. The auger company owes your uncle to getting their equipment back. I hope he was able to keep the paycheck.

The shame was there wasn’t 3 young blokes learning from him...the knowledge he has can never be replaced . That’s a very early Cummins ....the starter “key” was gold !! The flashing light would be the only thing made in this millennium and yet it all works perfect !!!

That old boy is a diamond. You see him and your Dad together what a font of knowledge. His old rig looks like something out of a Mad Max movie but with him at the controls it works. As for the old Muir Hills. He certainly makes them get up and boogie. Still remember him cutting laps on one at the old track at his place. Very impressive.

I'm 63 now, but even as a child I loved hanging out with old geezers like your Uncle Drew who were mechanical and electrical geniuses who could take a piece of junk and with a little bit of clever engineering fix it and find find all sorts of useful ways to use it. Bless all our old folks, so many are treasures.

Being out with you lads and working is what is keeping Uncle Drew young! I have never seen family members of a family business as large as yours work so hard! How many family members work in the business? Do you have any brothers there? Did you ever tell the family story with respect to the business?

He's the same age as my dad, he's a hardy leitrim man and is still grafting away refurbishing his house. That exit i his Muir - Hill was epic 😎. I've drilled a bunch of them out with an 60lb hammer drill and a 10' rock drill. What I've learned was to beat on the freshly drilled augers with a sledge or back hoe bucket to knock free the rest of the concrete. If you don't it will break free in a couple days and plug up the auger.

Respecting the old timers who have forgotten more than I ever knew is lost now. Where I live that job would have been shut down for being unsafe, hazardous debris and noise abatement and probably some endangered species concern. Your method works very well, one can also use a Water Jet at 5000psi and above, that works too, however if the cutting head wanders you can cut through the side of the Auger!! the pressure is so high it cuts steel just as easily as concrete.

Worked on a drill rig for a company called rockfall, part of the boskallis group.
We drilled under water at the Panama canal south Pacific entrance.
Drill rig like that hanging off the side of a barge.

as a concrete mixer driver, I deliver to such pile drillers on a regular basis, they indeed have special recipe to make these piles very though. The blue colour indicates a very high cement content. I've never heard of drilling out these drill bits, I'll have a chat with our regular crews on that topic and tell them about this video. uncle Drew is a character, everyone should have one or two of them in their lives.

Yar. Especially once the bit starts binding. I ran jacklegs and stoper rock drills in an underground mine. My body was the expendable bushing. If the bit stopped turning one way then the drill went the other. Best not to stand inside the hoses.

Seen a water flush one at a shop in Texas next to ours. Where it was one long rack with different size (C) clamps for bolting downward on pipes and those agars. Much easier when there laying down flat. 😎😎👍👍Good job you two for getting it done anyway how you could. P.S. shop also removed harden concrete from cement truck tumblers using explosives. The sound was like being in a mine tunnel every time it went off. 🎆🎆

The last one partially obstructed looks like a sand blasting tip would be better than a shaft and drill bit.
