The squish the cat video was pivotal. A brief moment in history where millions gathered to learn how to gently handle cats.
Squish that cat!
Squish that cat!
So true - because of this video, I was able to safely start picking up my cat once we adopted her - Squish that cat!
It makes me so happy to read this!
I had a laugh but was intrigued at the same time. Now I've watched several methods to communicate with our cat through body language and how to pick them up.
Best part is that I sense in how our cat reacts to it that it's appreciated. So thanks!
@@HelpfulVancouverVet it makes us so happy to see your videos dude
‘Squish that cat’ has been such a lifesaving trick! Earlier this year a semi-friendly feral turned up in need of help, it turned out that he had diabetes. And ‘squish that cat’ was how we where able to give him his insulin. Now he will jump up and lay down on his own, so we don’t need it anymore, but it made it so much easier!
I have had quite a number of people reach out to me to tell me how they saved their cat’s life by being able to handle them skillfully after watching my video :-). Everything from saving ferals and giving meds to getting a cat out of a burning building during a fire!
_"Cats have a bit of a timer on them"_ This is absolutely true with my cat. I can pick her up and she's happy to sit in my arms for about 10 seconds, purring and everything.
But then she starts to move, and her movements get more and more frantic, and within about 3 seconds she's trying to disembowel me to get back down to the safety and freedom of the ground.
Same. My Mookie hates being picked up and held. Not the lap cat I would have preferred but every morn I get about 40 sec. of her affection as she jumps on my bed and lays on my chest and purrs....never has made it to 1 min. I've settled. 😒
My cat would put when I pick him up and hold him. I let his upper body rest on my shoulder and hold his bum and legs. But this would only last 10s
@@Xsksnssjccxghb
I've come to the conclusion that some small affection is better than nothing. 😊
@@Xsksnssjccxghb
P.S. I prefer the honest affection cats grudgingly give me over that given by dogs who really have no sense of judgement of human behavior at all.
Dogs will kiss and love you no matter what. Cats only love you sparingly and only if they feel you deserve it. Therefore, in my.opinion, the love from a discerning feline is WORTH SO MUCH MORE than a dog's. 😊
@@hoffer_moment
That's it!! Delayed gratification.
Perfect explanation for us not getting affection on demand.
Thank you.
"Squish that cat": Director's commentary
You know, even if quite the amount of viewers don't really own a cat, me included, the "squish that cat" video still helps us through tough times. Not only is it concise and useful, it's also very entertaining. The meme it spawned also helps a lot.
Thank you, Dr. Uri and cat co.
There’s a meme! 😂
So true about handling cats. I teach all my cats to allow handling and get used to being touched on their feet and around their face and ears. During vet visits they're always very calm and let the vet examine them without any fuss. Makes vet visits so much less stressful!
I tried to do the same for my family's new kitten a few years ago and it actually mostly worked! I did have to leave after just a few months so I wasn't able to do too much, but I would pet her belly, ears, and paws gently to help her get used to it and to know I'm not doing it to hurt her.
She doesn't let me do it anymore or as much, especially since I've moved out entirely, but when we took her to the vet the vet told us she was one of the most well-behaved cats they'd ever worked with (granted, they had just had our granny-cat nearly have to be sedated just to get a check up so they might have been a tad biased).
@@krea8402 I took my cat, Nehemiah, to the vet and left him there for the day. He was feral when he adopted me and is quite feisty. About mid-day the vet called me and said, "He bit me!!!" Of course, I said, "Well what did you do to him?" She laughed and asked if she could sedate him just a little bit. I gave permission and she was able to finally cut his nails and give him his shots. Some cats have a very short fuse about being touched and they will never change. Nehemiah is now 6 years old and is mellowing a bit but he will never be a hugger or a shoulder cat. I tried the shoulder thing and he pushed away from me. He thot that was ridiculous.
Talking about fuss and examination, Georgie, now around 12 years old, for many years would let the vet and techs handle and examine him all they wanted/needed to but the whole time he would hiss and yowl and growl with such intensity that you were sure someone was going to end up in the ICU in the next 20 seconds. And then the pandemic came ... he had to go alone in to his annual that year; was reported that he didn't make a sound but was so angry his ears turned scarlet. Next year, which was last year, I went in with him, and yep, didn't vocalize but his thinly haired ears got close to stop sign red. 😾 Georgie cat, my man, you are quite the character. 😸
I’d like to let you know that thanks to your squish that cat video I named my cat Squishy, and she in fact likes to be squished
I am honoured.
Squish that cat is absolutely one of my all-time favorite videos on the internet 🥰🥰
I’m still amused that my commenting “Squish that cat!” got auto-removed as obscene on some smedia post I can no longer remember except that it was definitely about a cat. 😂
I wanna pet that cat so bad. 😭
*squish
@@fractera 😅😅😅
You mean *SQUISH* Right???
When I brush my cat, which is a daily routine, he tends to get bitey. It is just his feisty nature and I accept that, however, when I squish him at the shoulders he stops. Thank you for teaching me that because it helps when handling my former feral cat who will always be a nipper when he gets excited or annoyed. Brushing him makes him excited so we do it until he starts to bite, then it's squish time. When I squish him at the shoulders, he stops biting immediately. Then he looks at me, like, what the heck are ya doin?
Instead of waiting until he goes over threshold, do it before. That will re-wire his brain to teach relaxation. Waiting until he’s over threshold is too late- it’s good that you can calm him, but doing it before will literally rewire his nervous system
That sounds like overstimulation
If you brush him in a more comfortable relaxing environment, he should be less likely to bite since he's not getting overwhelmed
@@dustinjames1268 Not really, Nehemiah was feral once and has a very short fuse. I use the softest brush and he gets real excited fast. He's just a little firecracker and always will be. I just accept the way he is put together and love him all the more.
"Wait! You always squish that cat?"
"Always has been."
Dr. Uri Squishtyn, such a helpful vet :D
I should consider a name change...
The "squish the cat" video was the point in my life when I properly learnt to handle cats! Now the cats don't run away from me and I appreciate cats more!
We say “squish the cat” around my house daily, after seeing that video oh so long ago... It truly changed our hug game... my kitty hated hugs and now he loves them when they are squishing hugs! Hehe! 😹😻🥰 We love your channel and all of your great tips and information! Thank you for all that you do, for our sweet little critters and us humans! ♥️♥️♥️
Love that!
I love that so many people have learned the best way to keep a cat calm and gently restrained by just the mere phrase "squish that cat." It's just such a perfect phrase that's easy to remember, and by the comments, it's clear that it has come in handy for so many people!
The squish that cat video - particularly the football carry style of squish - helped me get my cat safely to the basement in a tornado a few years ago. He send his purrs 😻
I am so grateful to have learned about squishing cats. My ex used to restrain cats by scruffing them, and as you might expect, claw trimming time took both of us and left me and the cat in question pretty upset. One thing I worried about when we broke up was how would I look after my cat's claws. Since I learned about cat squishing, I can do claw maintenance by myself as long as I respect the timer.
Thanks for your video, finally, in her 12th years of life, I realised that my cat is a shoulder type of cat. She perched relaxedly, like a cockatoo on a pirate's shoulder
I forgot to squish my cat today. Glad I came across this video.
It's adorable how much your cats love you. You could see that Clawdia turned to face you as if to ask: hooman, please hold me.
Squish That Cat helped me and my kitty! Miss Kitty LOVES getting her thyroid ear cream because I just give her the ULTIMATE SMOOSH and huddle over her with lots of hugs and kisses and she purrs the whole time
My pleasure! :-)
@@HelpfulVancouverVet miss kitty is looking judgmentally as cats do "actually MY pleasure" :P
My roommate's cat has significantly warmed toward me after I began squishing that cat.
Can't wait to get my own squishy kitty.
You're probably the most frequently quoted UA-camr in our home. At least once a day we pick up one of the cats and inform them that we're going to squish them. It gives us the giggles, but it is also tremendously good advice for making it easier and safer to handle cats.
SQUISH THAT CAT ❤

Clawdia: Wat's that hooman doing? You guys got any idea? 😆
I love that you feel public education is at your core. You perfectly described every vet I’ve ever met!
Lovely Claudia, so cute
Isn't she Clawdia?
Clawdia :-)
Claudia is such a cute cat, but ain't every cat are cute?!
They spell it Clawdia 😸
definitely not. i love cats, but i acknowledge some of them are hard to look at. much like with humans however, it doesnt mean they shouldnt be loved.
@Jess H Thank you :-)
Yeah even a rough looking street cat is cute in their own way.
Yes they are. I have kitty friends who thrived in my front yard. By this point I've seen a 3rd generation of them. Their mom is skittish even though I've seen her as a kitten. She dropped a kitten that is in every way, shape and form her grandma. She's my favorite.
earl grey, my fluffy flame point lad LOVES to be squished. also you really helped me when i became a cat parent to my two seniors. i couldn't have done it without you dr. b!
Earl Grey. Love it.
Such an excellent cat name.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet Thank you! my other is called mister rogers ♡
YOU HAVE SQUISH THAT CAT MERCH??? I'm buying it.
Your desire to help people with this issue reminds me of Jackson Galaxy going to people's homes and saying "Show me how you pick-up/hold your cat" and they either hold them away from their body or cradle them like a baby and he has an instant face-palm moment.
Thank you so very much Vancouver Vet... you taught me to 'squish' my two cats and now everything 's easier, getting them flead, getting them in their carriers for the vets etc..
Also when Lulu needed a course of tablets watched your video and administered them to her just as you demonstrated.
You are a wonderful vet and my Lulu & Leah have benefitted enormously from your instructive videos.
You are so welcome!
This video actually helped me get closer with my cat a while back, he trusted me enough to carry him from then on
Since my girl was introduced to squishing and shoulder carrying, she will not leave me alone. She has become a complete shoulder addict and will lick my ear for a 'squish'...it's not a restraining technique, she just lives for a squish. It's at the stage now where I've had to make her a sling to hold her on my shoulder in a squishy way just so I can work at my computer. :)
i heard "my name is uri burstyn and this is yung clawdia" omg
Your video showed me I wasn't holding my cats tightly enough when carrying and it changed everything! I also learned that several cats that I thought hated petting LOVE long slow squishes.
You are so amazing! You are a great teacher. You not only teach us about cats & veterinary medicine, but you also help us understand ourselves on multiple levels. Thank you for finding the time to engage w/ us all. Please love on the kitties for us. God bless.
Thank you for the kind words.
awww the cry as he picks up claudia! sounds just like one of my cats tilly. she's such a dramaqueen lol
Remember to football your kitty!
Helps in an emergency evacuation from a fire, or so I'm told!
I just hope no one takes it the wrong way and oversquishes the cat. People can be stupid.
Kids: I learned at school liquids aren't compressible, and people say cats are liquid. So cats can't be oversquished!
Oooo true. Those kinds of people shouldn't have pets, and should be supervised around them.
Those kind of people don't deserve to be
i think the cat will let you know if thats the case 😂
im glad my cat will murder my hands if i dare to accidentally hurt him
The ''Squish that cat'' became an absolute icon in the cat videos of UA-cam and one of your most popular ones. And for all the right reasons, it's a great video, and the titular catchphrase is also great and hilarious.
Your bond with the cats is so much fun to watch. When cats love you back, then it's heavenly.
Squishing the cat has been a useful technique. My cat is now far less rigid. I'm able to mold her into shapes like loaf, log and croissant. And she loves it 😻
squish that vet too, because he is such a nice person
Good video Doc. My cat recently passed - 24 years old - so a good innings. Thinking of getting another at some point. In the meantime it's nice to be able to still watch cat videos so keep them coming :)
Wow an actor too. Would love to hear about some of your experiences.
@WeirdCity I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, but that is a most impressive age, and to be lived in what I am sure is excellent human company!
I'm super impressed your cat lived that long. I'm sure it was hard to let go, but what a full life.
My last cat took the squishing to a whole new level of refusing to get into any sort of official pet carrier; she would only travel in my Scooby Doo backpack. She was always very polite at the vet, but moderately embarrassing explaining at check in that the feline patient was in the canine backpack.
There should really be some squish that cat merch at this point. I'd wear it. :)
Honestly squish that cat is a cultural icon at this point
I have a cat. Thanks to your video, I squish it often!
I remember watching that video long time ago in its early times. Crazy how viral it became lol honestly do it helped you are very gentle Doc
I think I quote "squish that cat" at least twice a day, or some variant of it
I come to your channel whenever I need cat handling advice! I had to start pilling my senior cat, and you had a video up and ready to go. Made his life and mine much easier. Thank you for your content!
i see miss clawdia still super squishy! 😍 be healthy always, dr. uri and team!
Thank you for making that video! My semi-feral cat has a bit of a problem with standing still when he wants petted, so I found that video really helpful! I've since been able to develop a technique to cuddle him, which was impossible to do before.
You've been immortalized by countless admiring viewers, I wouldn't take it personally!!
I always refer back to your videos and recommend them to friends! I still laugh at “orange boy” and am awaiting the merch 😂
I love the meme but you're also endlessly helpful with all your cat medicine videos and just learning the animals in general. Thank you for posting after all these years
I've never owned or touched a cat, but "squish that cat" has always been a yearly rewatch, one of my early favourites on Yt ❤️
Kits and I so love your videos. we have learned so much. You are our forever vet. Seniors cannot afford to come to the vet - your videos are so appreciated - we love you.
I love youtube for the ability to listen to people like you that I would otherwise never spoke to.
Everyone’s life is improved after learning proper squish-technique 😻
I wore my Squish That Cat shirt today haha! I've showed it to every other cat person I know!
sadly my cats don't like to be picked up in either recommended position too much, but they love to be held like a little baby for brief stints. they're hefty boys too so I get a bicep workout whenever I need to grab them lol.
I always love ur vids their informative, so I’m very interested in this :D wow this is really true, about why utube videos should be made, to help and inform others beyond you ability. :) Never knew how to pick up my cousin’s cat but I finally did some time ago, because of your vid :)
UA-cam is a great educational tool. I just hope google recognizes this and doesn’t bury older quality content in favour of the latest pseudo-TikTok
@@HelpfulVancouverVet I definitely agree
@@HelpfulVancouverVet although with the way UA-cam is going… it’s turning into TikTok slowly and steadily T-T
Thank you for the video! I love every time I can see you teaching us. Also- I have always loved your voice, the way you talk is so enjoyable to listen to. ☺
My mom and I quote "squish that cat" to each other all the time. We love your videos
huh, I literally just saw the squish that cat video for the first time ever and wondered if you guys were still making videos and then clicked back to the main page and this popped up in my feed. Thanks, UA-cam!
I've tried to do this with my cat Bailey and it was a hard no. 😄 She's 12 now, and has always been very timid. She'll lay next to me in bed or visit me when I'm taking care of business in the bathroom, but runs if I walk near her. Even if I'm laying down, if I try to get ahold of her she flees. When I adopted her from the Toronto Cat Rescue at age 5 months, she was in a one bedroom apartment with about 18 other cats and kittens. I think that it was just too overwhelming for her personality. She's definitely gotten more brave over the years, but is next to impossible to catch. I live in Vancouver now, so if I ever can catch her maybe we'll come visit you. She requires a blanket to hide under when being examined... 😅
I saw the original from about 5 y back.
What a pitty when we had a cat, ages ago, youtube did not exist. I really love your handling videos and think they are extremely helpfull. I actually sent links to 2 cat owners I happen to know and who mentioned that they were not sure about handling. And just your way of handling and touching your cats lets them relax
I do a lot of gardening and give occasional workshops on pruning. In my experience people may have read stuff but are still unsure how to really apply it. Like, when you assure to really squish well, I assure that certain roses really need to be pruned quite short.
The result usually evokes several: dear me, I would never…
Cat cam at the end is so relaxing
my roommate's cat loves to be squished so much, she now begs for hugs with a nice good squish. never met a cat that loved to be hugged like a toddler before! but she loves pressure and squish quite a bit. haven't found her timer limit yet. she once had me hold her for a whole 30 minutes and i had to put her down 'cause my arms needed a break!
It is December of 2023, and I came across SQUISH THAT CAT. Now I squish my cat and she loves it! When she sits next to me she turns her head and looks at me a certain way and she gets squished! Thank you for your helpful videos, and I wish you all the best up there in Vancouver, with Mr. Pirate, Clawdia, et al. From Ginny and Christopher in Georgia, U.S.A. 👏💐😻
My Norwegian forest cat loves to have her back massaged, so I added some squish and call it SQUISHSSAGE 😻
What a legend.
Omg Claudia is so cute she looks exacly like my 1 year old girl! Even the Fur Pattern is the same so adorable!
One of my most favorite memes ever!
I love the video and this explanation about it. Keep on squishing that cat! 😻
“Squish that cat” is my favourite video of all time
the original video definitely helped me realize why my brother (who has the physique of a rugby player) was always able to carry my cats without much struggle. i had been doing the 'squish' without realizing it but even so nothing could compare to my 4-5kg chonky cats settling in between my brothers' thick arms and chest. (my chonkiest cat always loved being hoisted over my shoulder like mr pirate, which is also helpfully explained in the original video!)
Oh my gosh, you're an actor?? The people wanna see a monologue, doc
Just watch season 5 of the Arrow :-)
I think that was the best type of video one could get famous with! Just a chill, genuine vet with cute cats. You deserve the views!
First vid I saw was the meme video recommended to me "squish that cat" then saw the original "how to pick up a cat like a pro" and I just stuck up with your vids. Though I don't have a cat, I find your videos pretty useful.
You basically created a meme that is very educational about cat handling. XD
I found a lot of joy from the original squish your cat vídeo. And this actually brings me joy :)
I thought it was just to educate folks, on how to better care for their cats & themselves. Either way, it made me laugh while also being educational. I've used the knowledge literally for years, passed it on, and spread the word. And then, we'd laugh with a "Squish that cat". It makes me happy to think about, and remember, it's changed a lot of bad days.
Squishing a cat never occurred to me as a long time cat owner until I saw that video. Now I squish my cat all the time and he'll instantly start purring.
The funny thing is I do this to my cat all the time and he starts to purr, they like being close. Also, the video was very entertaining, made a lot of people smile. We appreciate what you do.
Ooh I love that little ASMR moment at the end
The long waited sequel of 'squish that cat'.
I rescued a cat a couple years back and couldn’t have without knowing to squish that nervous cat.
Nice to hear the story behind this legendary video! 😄
i don't own a cat but squish that cat is probably a top 50 video on the internet, and there's some TOUGH competition online.
i hope that if i ever handle a cat in the future i can use my squishing knowledge to make it more comfortable for me and the cat
Thank you sir I rescued 8 cats till now your tips were helpful ❤
My dear ol pa (rest his soul) taught me when I was a child, back in the early 80’s, this same technique, more or less, but he called it squeeze the beast! It applied to cats, rabbits, Guinea pigs… I’ve come to discover that it actually works on the Mrs too!
I've seen people comment "squish that cat" in all sorts of unexpected places - you really have reached a lot of people.
Thank you so much for the videos you make! Our cat has a handling timer of whole five seconds but thanks to your instructions we were able to give her medicine with no stress to her and us :D your advice is most helpful as we try to make her life as comfy as possible
"squish the cat" is art, true masterpiece
All you gotta do is
Squish.
That.
Cat.
even when im not squishing that cat i tend to tell the cat im going to squish that cat
i'm not even a cat guy but squish the cat taught me something.
I now have two cats and I squish them daily ❤
Mr pirate, the shoulder cat. He is awesome. Claudia is handsome as well. The best cats ever.
