My closest friend, who I know went through this journey years ago and is debt free, will go on shopping trips and girls weekends. She never says a word about not spending a dime in the shops. She ohhs and awws and takes complete pleasure in window shopping. She eats lunch, which I'm sure she budgeted for and never leaves with bags of stuff. I never noticed it until last time. She completely indulges in just being with us. I took alot away from that day. So I am implementing that into my days, too. It's so funny that after 40 years of friendship I'm just now "onto" her!
Hey Jen! This January is my 3rd year doing a “no spend”. The first year I felt nervous going into it, but last year and this year I just feel excited! It’s seriously one of the BEST self care rituals I do for myself. This year I’m focusing on using up the odds and ends, the little bits of lotions/shampoo, etc that I have laying around before buying more, using up the food In my pantry and freezer first. I had a surprise guest visit over the weekend but I cooked for us at home and used petty cash when we went out…zero impact on my accounts. That little thing would have derailed me a few years ago. I’m proud of myself 😊
This is my first no spend challenge. I’ve only purchased 2 items not budgeted for. I’m calling that a win. I am not good at anything until I’ve practiced it for a while. I expect to mess up but continue to get better as I learn about my myself and build new skills.
Best video!!! TY!! My pastor gave a great visual the other day….when you get a flat tire do you shoot the other three? No you fix the flat tire and move on!! So excited for a low buy year!
8 days in and I’ve only spent $ on groceries; for 2 adults, 2 children and 1 dog we’ve spent less than $40 so far! I did a good inventory of my pantry, fridge and freezer and worked with only supplementing that. Aside from that, nothing else so far :) I’ll also be using gift cards I got for Christmas throughout these first few months of the year!
I am happily rockin the no spend but just got hit this week with a dental emergency out of the blue…it’s costing $2K…ouch! Most dentists do not accept insurance here in NY so it’s out of pocket. We can scrape the cash together (thank God). It’s a set back but gives me more motivation to stop buying sh** I don’t need!
The most valuable things we did was (thanks to you) make a budget, audit our bank account and credit card purchases, and account for all our subscriptions. What an eye opener. I couldn’t believe how much we spent on coffee and other takeout food- yike! I now have a binder and a planned budget, with some allowances for takeout. Our no spend is anything outside the budget. We had unexpected dental bills for my son, and I did spend on Etsy downloads and cash stuffing items, so after that, I’m on a mission to stop spending! One day at a time…😉
Thank you for these great tips. So far so good with me. Sunday my granddaughter came over and said let's go shopping, I told her yes we can go but I am only looking because I am on a no spend cha!!enge. We went to TJMaxx my favorite store none the less. But I had a $10 reward available and used $9.79 of it, that satisfied me I shopped and didn't spend my own money. My rules are in place for the rest of the month wish me luck.
I’ve been watching your videos for 6 months now and have learned SO much about myself and my finances. Thank you. I started envelopes, taking only those I need when I do errands. There is no “mall” envelope. I use the “coffee” envelope, and that stop helps the No Spend mindset to kick in.
Hi Jen, I’m new to your channel. Though I’m not a big spender I’m a consistent spender and that’s the leak in my boat. I’ve been working on low spends since September and am now doing my no spend month. Yes, I blew it today when I bought a takeaway coffee and donuts for my son. But I came home, wrote it down, marked my calendar and am setting myself up again. It’s definitely a challenge, but as you say each step takes you in the direction one wants to go. And new me doesn’t want a leaky boat, new me wants financial freedom. Thanks for the great video.
Very informative and inspirational. So much good sense here and so clearly explained. I'm doing a low buy year - not specifically to save money but to declutter and stop bring stuff into my home. My money saved will go towards travel! Thanks 🙂
I have been a loyal follower of you and because of how you explain each process and took us on your journey to being debt free I have made tremendous strides in my debt free journey. I have been able to make the "no spend challenge" a lifestyle for myself. I never was a big spender on myself and was always able to save or curb spending but once I had kids, I spent and spent on them but now I dont. I save for what I want or to treat myself. (See it, like it, save it and Treat yourself challenges) I save and budget for spending on them and it has made a world of difference. Although others have noticed and taken an interest in how I budget and save that, I have conversations on how to get started almost every day, unless they ask I treat it like my fasting, they dont need to know..lol..Thank you Jenn, watching your videos is like having a financial sponsor that holds you accountable! 😊🥰
Thank you Jen! I love your "queen energy" approach :) I will not quit! My goal is to be mortgage free by the time my husband retires in three years. We have been debt free for over a decade (except for the mortgage) and I would never trade the peace of mind that comes with knowing that we can cover emergencies and keep a roof over our heads. We also have the mentality that whatever we want to impulse buy will become trash one day. We call it future trash. One thing that motivates me is keeping a journal of the no spend things I've done the previous day. I love your videos!
Oh thank you for sharing that! I agree “future trash” - it sounds funny but it’s so scary, actually. My goal is also to pay off the house. I’d love to get it done in 2025- come on, UA-cam! 😂
I will not quit! I have my January zero based budget and cash envelopes for my weekly expenses plus a fee for annual sinking funds. First time trying a no buy! Thanks for your content!!!
I'm doing okay so far. I have a pot of money for "needs" and a small pot for "wants" restaurants, movies, etc. If I come in under my monthly allotment, I can buy something off my "wish" list which is very unneeded but very fun.
I am doing good so far - I paid off my only credit card, I used a friends Sams Club account to buy 2 necessities & saved money buying these items in bulk & free shipping-kept me out of the store buying unnecessary stuff’. I am off to a good start! Other than a deer collision…which will keep me out of the stores as well for quite awhile …ha ha. 🤦♀️ 🦌 🚗 (edit) oh & one of my winter time guilty pleasures are puzzles 🧩 & I went to the library a few days ago - they had a table loaded with them, a puzzle exchange bring one take one. My sister had given me a puzzle for Christmas so after finishing it - I exchanged it for another one! win win woot!
The first and second I found a fifty percent off sale and bought a winter coat and shirt for under seventy dollars, I don’t feel guilty and I just moved on. If I get through the month with just those purchases I’m winning.
I gave myself a $12 budget for Dollar tree and $5 at Walmart. It was eye opening. I can spend $40 to $90 normally at The Dollar tree and the same at Walmart. I now see why I didn't have any money. I was spend spend spending my leftover money.
I will not quit! I'm glad you explained two types of no-buy because I blew the extreme one twice this first week (dance class start-up costs and a yen for a cheap ice cream). I budgeted the class but it wasn't a 'necessity' so I felt like a failure. After watching your video I've decided that if it's not in my budget, it is a no-buy! I'll do that for a time and then challenge myself with the full 30 day no buy once I'm getting the hang of this. Knowing what's in my bank account, credit card and wallet each day has been amazing! It's only a mystery when you opt out of being aware. Thanks for the guidance!
So far I am on Day 8 of my no spend. Enjoying it so far. I did splurge on one day and spent some money on a new pot and some items that we needed. Saving up $2 every day I don't spend and then at the end of the year I am putting it towards and extra debt payment.
Hahaha. I spent $4,200.00 on a small travel trailer for temporary housing. I saved for over a year, so this is within my no-spend budget, but still makes me laugh. And I stopped and got a cheesesteak burrito at Buc-ee's on the way home to celebrate. And I am not counting that as breaking my parameters either as I was on the road so not "really" eating out, but getting substance so I didn't pass out while driving. Haven't spent ANY money other than bills or gas for the car other than that. Just cracks me up it was the first week of the no-spend challenge that I found a trailer after looking for several months.
I don't struggle saying no to myself. I don't enjoy shopping. I'm a natural minimalist. I really don't like eating out. My husband and I have been married 39 years. We own our home outright, and are debt-free. However we don't have much for retirement. We need to be saving and or investing for that. Here's my issue: I have a huge family spread out across this country(aging parents, brothers, sister, nieces and nephews..). It's important for me to spend time with them. This requires time off work (self-employed no vacation pay), airline tickets, rental cars, motels when there's no room at a family member's home. I generally take 3 to 4 of these trips a year. Also, more locally, I have four sons, four daughter-in-law's, and 16 grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 18. That's a ridiculous amount of sporting events and other school activities to attend (Two of our sons and their families live 2-3 hours away- a lot of gas money), lots and lots of birthday and Christmas gifts. I don't spend a lot per person, but when you have that many people in your family birthdays and Christmas can become very expensive. So all that to say, I don't have spending problem, but even budgeting a reasonable amount for gifts and travel to see family etc, is a huge amount of money that goes out every year. It's preventing us from saving for the future. I don't know what the solution is 😩
I have started the no spend January which I also started last year and the year before etc. this year is different though, I am going to complete it instead of giving up about halfway in. Love your channel! You are very inspiring!! ❤️
I WILL NOT QUIT! No oopsies yet, 8 days in (well, really since christmas). I am going to put "This is not deprivation, this is freedom" on a post it and put it everywhere. Because right now I'm fine, but in the darker moments I'll need a reminder!
I will not quit. It is so funny to see how I squirm and cannot stand it for not spending money on Amazon or Etsy and then I thought to myself I don't need either. I can make whatever I want to buy from Etsy and that Amazon crap is exactly that. CRAP! I want my money to be for me. I want my savings challenges to be saved for my high yield savings not to pay off a credit card. 🙄 I'm so sick of it! I'm ALL IN! ❤❤❤
Good evening Jenn. I will NOT QUIT!!! Right now I’m on a No spend month. I do have to purchase some things for the house due to some renovation, but that is budgeted in my home binder.
I really needed this pep talk because I almost bought something outside of my rules. It’s been tough, I’ve tried a lot of times and done low buys. But I feel like this is the year, and I will be debt free!
I am working on this no spend challenge, but even harder for me is a no sugar challenge and this was a very helpful video for that as well. I started Jan 2 instead of failing on New Year's day and I know I will have a slice of my daughter's birthday cake on Jan 11th but I will not eat the leftovers for days and I will not quit. It just takes planning.
I started no/low spend back in September and have instead been able to open a roth IRA with $200/mo deposits, built up a $1,000 vet emergency fund (I have 5 beloved senior pets), paid off all credit cards, and am now working on getting a full month ahead (1/2 way there). I say "low" spend bc I allow myself 2 things and I believe they are the key to longevity (and it's honestly, it's not even hard anymore, it's a way of life and like a game): #1. Coffee is excluded...I really reduced buying it out, but I still do, andI buy my "want" not "need" premium creamer and beans. #2. I created a mad money line item in my budget...I had a stack of 75 mini index cards on on ring which I randomly numbered 1-75. Each payday I randomly pull one out and put that amount into my fun money bucket. It can be $1 or $50 or $75 or anything in between (it's like a version of the envelope challenge). I can spend THAT money guilt free. I can spend it each week or built it up. THIS has proven to be my outlet for wants. Last month I bought some clothes at my favorite goodwill that I did not need, a fancy new bird feeder, and a bike rack. Today I bought a meal from the hot bar at WholeFoods. I agree with you that it becomes the new normal and it's FAR less stress than debt. I am not debt free yet, but getting there thanks to low spend.
I don't have any debt (thanks to an inheritance - paid off my CCs and my mortgage), but I do have a budget of a sorts and have managed to save up a nice bucket of funds for emergencies, etc. But I want to save more for that emergency bucket, travel, home repairs, and some other big ticket things, and I know my money leak is in my monthly credit card "budget" of around $1500. That includes groceries and all the variable expenses. What am I doing with that? Sometimes it creeps up to $2K and that's too much. So I am doing a no-spend and a deep dive into what is going on in that CC spending. I already cancelled 3 subscriptions I don't need any more. I know take-out/deliveries are a big chunk, so doing a pantry challenge to use up stuff in the freezer, etc. Thanks for all the inspiration. It's a lifestyle change, but it is SO empowering to be in control!! Once you get out from debt you budget for your lifestyle and know what you are buying. It's not deprivation! It's security and freedom!
We've been debt free for several years and saving at least 50% of our net income. We budget and plan for all of our "non essential" purchases. However, I do have a rather undisciplined approach to Amazon. I've been unsuccessful changing my relationship with the Amazon "buy now" button. LOL I've decided to try a new approach to Amazon. I have set a maximum monthly budget for Amazon of $100 that is set in stone. My new rule is that I will accumulate all those impulsive "wants and needs" in my cart and on the last day of the month I will ruthlessly cull the cart until it is at or below my allowance for the month. We're only one week into the new year and I've already purged and regenerated my cart several times. It's been a real eye-opener for me to see how undisciplined I've been with Amazon when I'm so disciplined in all other areas of our budget. We do buy some grocery items from Amazon that are unavailable locally. One of us has food allergies.
I have made 7 days no spend…..I will cause make it cause I and paying of my loan. I have cut off my Internet and my Wi-Fi no longer have access to online shopping. I live out of town from the city so I do not go shopping. I only buy groceries if I have enough money after my bills are paid. My bills comes first ….then food.. Senior citizen don’t have money to waste on things I don’t need …to old to let my wants not hurt me.
Thank you, Jen for the channel. I found you in the last two weeks. I am a long time budget😢” try this for a few weeks, try that for a few weeks, come back to the first thing”. Last night it took all of my effort not to buy the next Erin Condron budget accessories. Any encouraging words for a perfectionist?
Since the 1st I’ve had five no spend days and three low spend/essential days. Although I’m already mindful after I took a three year task to declutter belongings a few years back, I felt I was in a place to do a challenge. I’m currently doing a second round of decluttering (it’s nowhere near as bad and it’s thankfully only part of one room) but my books were a sticking point. Yesterday I decided to get a library card to use with the Libby app and indulge in books/audiobooks for free. I walk a lot so the audiobooks will be great for that. All for free and keeps my mind occupied. It’s amazing when you declutter just how much your brain wants to “problem solve” like clearing out enough space to buy a new shelve for the rest of the stuff. I said no to myself and continue the mission 😊
It’s really important to me to be set for retirement. That is more important than clutter. I’ve seen far too many people in retirement struggle and I’m in a position to be able to have enough to live. If I feel a “want” coming on I just ask myself “is this worth more than retirement freedom and can I be bothered to declutter it eventually?” Solved. The money gets transferred and saved because if I was willing to part with it then, then I can save it and not miss it instead. Saving is an expense. It’s buying your future back bit by bit.
I get paid once a month and I really want to do the low but no but challenge. I didn't make it so far for January but I am not going to give up. I know it will be hard for me but I am determined.
Thank you so much for this video, I am still finding it difficult to finalise rules, and have spent on several days so far, I will get my rules set and put blocks up on some apps etc now!
It’s been a rough first week. We had two unexpected expenses the first one started with our dog passing away and we paid for her cremation. Then we had to repair a part on my husband’s truck. He lucked out and got the mechanics pricing and did the work himself so we “saved” about $400 for what the parts and labor would have been! We will continue on with no buy though. We can’t control everything right?!
Make My Own Rules: I can only do my "buying" on one day of the month. Doing that, i do not include extra treats with the pet food order. The bulk groceries are just what is needed. I do need more garden seeds, but on my one exclusive buy day it is much more controlled.
In December I have just paid my debt off and they offered me again with lower interest 😭but I stick into debt free , I fell so much lighter this year ! Try to save more
I’m going still going strong it’s the 8th and only spent 45 euros on groceries and kids after school snacks. I love seeing the money sitting in my bank account 😂😂😂I could get used to it.
How do I find the video to go along with the beginners guide? You give good advice. I'm doing no-buy essentials until I can make a budget like you did.

I was able to make snowball payments on two of my credit cards. Happy about that!
I paid off my 2 large credit cards love this video ❤❤❤😊
That's awesome way to go
I will not quit. Yet another info packed video. My goal is freedom from debt. Persevere is my word for the year. 🎉
I started the no “online” buy challenge thanks to your videos! Thank you! I truly believe you have changed my life!!!

I failed day 3 and didn't even realize it! I take it as information and I'm gonna keep on going.
Yep, I forgot but I’m not stopping. I’m going to succeed ❤
Very informative and inspirational. So much good sense here and so clearly explained. I'm doing a low buy year - not specifically to save money but to declutter and stop bring stuff into my home. My money saved will go towards travel! Thanks 🙂

Adore your fabric colours in sofa cushions. ❤❤

I will not quit! So far I am on day 7 of no spend. And haven't spent anything that wasn't budgeted for! I love this!🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Jen!! Every time I want to quit I’m going to watch your video 💜🎆🥳
Yep that was me. Thank you for the encouragement. I appreciate you ❤ I will not Quit
Thank you Jen, I will not quit !! 💪🦋✨!!!
I WILL NOT QUIT!! Thanks so much for the great video!! You are awesome ❤
Hello Jenn, yes i do that sometimes . impulse buying. I like making my own rules. ❤❤ Thank you
I forgot to buy milk and a chicken (our go to fast protein) envelope empty and major meal components missing!
I will NOT quit!!
Great tips Jen!
This is exactly what I needed yo see today. Thank you for this video.
I made it! The only thing I hadn’t planned for was a birthday card and $20 for my grandsons birthday!
I started last year getting alot better now. Not so many dots on calendar anymore.
Thank you so much for this video, I am still finding it difficult to finalise rules, and have spent on several days so far, I will get my rules set and put blocks up on some apps etc now!
My no spend is going so well. Outside of auto drafted bills, the only thing I have swiped my debit card for has been gas for my car!
Im paying myself 5.00 for all 0 days. I can add it to my savings.
I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you big hugs, strength and prayers for comfort. ❤️🩹
Thankyou❤ I Will not quit
I'm in on this challenge! Great video.
I will not quit. I am wanting to retire in a few years and need to be pay off some debt to get there
I'm learning so much here. Thank you!
I will not quit.
xo~linda
Super helpful - thank you!
So far, so good..🎉🎉🎉
I will not quit! 😊
Make My Own Rules:
I can only do my "buying" on one day of the month. Doing that, i do not include extra treats with the pet food order. The bulk groceries are just what is needed. I do need more garden seeds, but on my one exclusive buy day it is much more controlled.
100% agree!
Great video this was really helpful. ❤
Day 7 still going strong 💚
❤THANK YOU!
I WILL NOT AND AM NOT QUITTING
In December I have just paid my debt off and they offered me again with lower interest 😭but I stick into debt free , I fell so much lighter this year ! Try to save more
I will not quit, 2 1/2 years budgeting
I will not quit 👍
Yes. The washing machine broke!
The video is on the same page- scroll down and you should see it: ko-fi.com/s/f0ea786694
@2SisterBees thank you!
Jen I did purchase The Complete Plan. Is there a video to go with this Plan? Thanks 😊

I also will not quit because here in Germany we have a huge inflation and a peas of Butter kosts 4€😮
I will not quit!!
I had 6 days of no spend. I spent 18.78 at the grocery store. No fast food.
After decluttering my closet, I feel like I need a few things. Lol. Seriously, though.
Does that count emergencies?
We had a snowstorm!
I will NOT QUIT
😁 Will try again.
