- A sneak peak at some of the work that goes into the art form of gold leaf gilding and sign painting (signwriting).
Sign completed by The Traditional Sign Painting Co.

The tools I used for this are:
no.4 & no.6 sign painting brushes.
1shot sign painters enamel (imitation gold).
23.5 kt gold leaf (transfer).
Gilders tip, Knife & cushion.

Thank you - I learned something new… being able to adhere / affix the 23k leaf over the actual paint vs a “sizing”. 👍🤙
I would be wary using any colours for gilding. I've only known imitation gold and actual gold size to work. Although white does work with silver and white gold
Wow, great work!
Thankyou! Was very happy with it one finished
obsessed😳
Beautiful work, thanks for sharing the process!
Facinating ! I just subscribed…keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!
UMA HABILIDADE E TANTO !!!!!! PARABÉNS !!!!!!!!!!!!
May i ask what type of paper you used to trace the letters, also did i see you dusting the sign with chalk before you traced?? Thanks!!
I just used a roll of drawing paper we get. Usually comes at 100 yard lengths for like 20 dollars, so its great value. Depends where you are delivery can be the bigger expense.
I use egg whites to stop the gold from sticking. So I have it in a small pot, wipe it onto the board and leave to dry. Then wash once completed.
The back of the drawing is very chalky to help mark the lettering from the paper to the sign. Where I get my hands all over the drawing is how it gets everywhere 😅
@@theletterhead thanks so much!!
Can I bother you with one more question please? I applied the leaf about an hour after painting but it smudged, do you have any recommendations on timing for this process?
Thanks so much!
@@terryfegan1674 to be honest it really depends on conditions. I've had it in direct sunlight in 30+ weather and have it ready to gild in 20 minutes, and I've had days where it takes 3 hours. A rule of thumb is to have it mostly dry but still tacky, some people say to rub a knuckle accros the painted area, if it squeaks as your hand loves across, its ready.
It's just about getting used to how it should feel.
applying it too soon will end up being dull in shine too I've noticed.
@@TheDjfunktion ok, so kinda like testing size for readiness! Thanks again for your generous spirit in sharing this info, it really helps.
parabéns amigo muito bom!
Obrigado amigo!
Great job! What is the chalky powder you use to transfer the design?
Hi Imogen,
I just use soft chalk, anything too hard can be difficult to use and may not mark out well, or not come off at all.
Classy
Thanks John!
Hi! Amazing work!! would this sort of work be placed outdoors? can it hold rain? I'm curious...also, did you use the drying paint to attach the gold leaf?
Hello pedro. Signs like this can certainly be placed outside. The gold is 23kt. So it will not tarnish outside.
Anything under 22kt. Should not be outside.
I know in commenting a bit late. I love your videos, I've never guilded anything, but worked in a custom paint shop for years. Do you clear coat your signs to protect the gold leaf, imitation or real. Also can you engine turn, or jewel the imitation leaf with the velvet on a dowel?
Thanks josh!
With gold leaf i almost never clearcoat it, unless it is in an area with high contact and chance of abrasion. Gold leaf above 23kt. won't tarnish so it's best left.
I don't normally use imitation gold, although I think it is fine uncoated inside, but needs coating for exterior use.
Hope that helps!
aprox. how long do you let the gold paint dry before sticking the gold leaf to it?
Can be anything between 2 and 5 hours depending on temp & humidity.
is it enamel gold paint?@@theletterhead
Is it worth trying to collect up the leaf and save? Can't imagine it is but at the same time, hard to sweep "gold" into a dust pan and throw it in the trash.
On very big jobs sometimes, when there is a lot of gilding like in palaces and prestigious venue's. These used to be called skewings, and would be collected and made into a nugget and sold, the proceeds would then work as a tip for the gilders once completed.
Sometimes it could work up to quite a bit. There were cases where these were stolen but unscrupulous characters. Work like this it would not be worth scooping up as it is so small that you may not even see it once compressed again. But in theory you are right!
How do you protect the gold coating for outdoor?
Any gold above 23kt shouldn't need any coating. Unless of course it is in an area with high risk of damage, where it could get scratched or scuffed. High quality gold won't tarnish or fade outside. With old gold that has been up for many years it can be washed, and look just as good as when applied.
Hi, what type of paint/glue are you using please? Thank you
It would be gold size I imagine
He used 1-shot enamel paint (imitation gold). The transfer leaf sticks to basically anything. Some ppl use size, or size mixed with enamel or just enamel. Lots of ways. Even varnish.
Spot on! this one is just Imitation gold, It can be more useful for lettering because it it so easy to see the shape.
Super clean! Everything I've seen so far shows how many hours you've put into this process.Excellent timing on the leaf! Turned out great!
Gotta lotta heads turned your way, i hope they start commenting and join in on the fun.
What we call that stick...that you holding while doing lettering?
Hi dexter, that is what we call a mahl stick
What call that tracing paper
This is just a roll of drawing paper with chalk on the back.
