    What would the harpsichord be today without the persevering efforts of Wanda Landowska? The irresistible attraction of the piano and the seductions of Romanticism had relegated the harpsichord to the status of a relic of a bygone era and reduced the richness of its immense repertoire to a mere field of musicological investigation. In the early years of the following century, a new interest began to emerge in this so-called early music, written for orchestra, voice and organ. However, it was not until the pioneer Wanda Landowska that the harpsichord awoke to a second existence. Thanks to her, an essential part of Western musical history found its original rhythms and colours on instruments close to the ones that saw its birth.
    Better still, Wanda Landowska inspired the composition of new works for her instrument, thus unexpectedly acclimatising the ancient plucked strings to the language of the creators of her time. She also gave rise to an entire generation of harpsichordists, each of whom, in his or her own way, continued her aesthetic adventure and led to the rediscovery of the entire Baroque literature.

      She blazed a mighty big comeback for an instrument all but forgotten until she got her hands on it… then no stopping her influence of greatness on its rebirth.

    For a while, I have enjoyed Angela Hewitt's recordings of Couperin on piano. The works are probably prettier, more elegant, played here for the original harpsichord. Love the passacaille.

    If you wish to hear Mme Landowska's Pleyel harpsichord being played with up-to-date recording equipment with the accompanying lecture, search 'Skip Sempe, Library of Congress'. It is most informative and enlightening. She could be very unyielding; to Pablo Casals no less, she once said "You play Bach your way, I'll play him his way."

    I star listening Landowska al 12 years old.She used to play a Pleyel built for her (cembalo temperament).She also was a very fine pianist.I think Scott Ross could be compared with her.

      La ultima presentacion publica de Landowska fue en 1954 y la casa que grabó este disco comenzo a trabajar con ella en 1949. Se puede decir que fue en los primeros años de los 50.

    She explores the different sounds or registers of the instrument. The "pizzicato sound" in harpsichord is reducing the possibility of the instrument to nought. What is the use of it?

  • @jelsberx
    @jelsberx 2 роки тому +2

    Well... I understand the historical importance of this, but... both the sound and the interpretation... for me, just for historical interest. Do not touch me emotionally at all, unlike Scott Ross and several others.
