To be up front, I consider Scarlatti to be the greatest composer of all, even though I have an extremely high regard for Mozart and Bach. For me sonata 555 is just absolutely incredible. Hard and clear as a diamond. Simply amazing. Thank you!
I met Ralph Kirkpatrick in the late 1950's as a youngster at the YMCA in Johannesburg. He had hired the hall for two Scarlatti recitals. I was paid a small amount to be resident ""electrician" - operator of the lights, etc - in the evenings. He had given his first recital and the local "music critic" - whose qualification was that she was the editor's wife - disagreed in her review with his interpretations. Before he started his second recital he asked if she was in the hall. He asked her for her views on some aspects of the work he was about to perform; she, a little startled, said "I don't lecture, I write." He said "I shall be glad if you will leave the hall, and only then started to play. I was in the "electrician's box" hidden in the corner of the stage and was bold enough to talk to him; I thought he might bite my head off, but he was quite affable.
Thank you Ralph, it is, as it could be said,a wonderful story, concerning a great artist and scholar, Ralph Kirkpatrick. The wonder concerning both his dealing with the soi disant critic and his affability with you the "electrician"
Having played some Scarlatti sonatas on the piano and hearing a handful of other sonatas of his over the years I can now say that I've heard all of them. It was a real treat and thanks to Scott Ross for playing them so magnificently!
This completes the beautifully remastered series of Scarlatti sonatas performed by the talented maestro of the harpsichord, Scott Ross. This monumental series, the recording of all the Scarlatti sonatas was completed in the last years of his life ... sadly cut all too short by Aids. The project started with the collaboration of Radio France, but was released by Erato. They mark a fitting crown to the brilliant talent of Scott Ross. If you haven't already, I urge you to seek out the other CMRR posts. My heartfelt thanks to the team at CMRR for these uploads to youtube and hence a wide new audience.
Merveilleux...! J'ai écouté les 555 sonates (plus celle qu'il a parodiée) avec délice, sans lassitude... Thanks for this marvelous sharing: M. Ross genuinely was a *immense* artist.
When I was in my late teens and early twenties and just discovering Scarlatti’s music, I used to wonder if I would ever get to hear all 555 sonatas ( that was before this complete set was released.) But now that I’ve heard them all multiple times, I wish he’d written twice as many.

Muchas gracias. Las sonatas que me faltaban.
