Are you sure this wasn't a Joe Macho (a.k.a. Joe Mack) bass line? Babbitt was a west coast musician, while Croce worked with Cashman and West in NYC on "I Got a Name." Joe Macho was a studio musician from Philadelphia who lived in and did tons of session work in NYC with West (and others), including his lines on a number of tracks for Croce's I Got a Name Album. Macho had been playing the Fender bass since 1953 and this included playing with Simon and Garfunkel, the Supremes, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few.
Every time I hear a Bob Babbitt bassline I think “how did he come up with this line”. His part on Midnight train to Georgia is another great example. He must have had extremely large hands. His flawless ability to skip strings without fail are impressive.
Excellent cover of this phenomenal bass line. These session players back then were so amazing. So were some of the musicians in the bands but the session players were just nailing it.
Thank you for this dissection of the song. I needed it for a gig tonight. Perfect!
