    This knife was inspired by the Morakniv chisel knife: bit.ly/2tNoQGh
    I was intrigued by the shape and functionality of the Mora and when I saw this old jointer blade at a flea market I decided to make one.
    The handle is mahogany and was inspired in shape by the kiridashi handles. I had no success drilling holes in this steel so I only used epoxy to keep it in place, if I manage to get a carbide drill bit I'll try adding some pins later.

    Wow this is a great example of form and function combined in a single item! I love the design and the process was well done too. One thing you might want to try when using reclaimed steel is to use spot annealing to soften areas that you want to drill into. Simply submerge the part(s) you want to keep tempered and heat the area you want to anneal.

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  7 років тому +9

      Thanks! After I finished this project I bought a torch just for that purpose. Before that I tried annealing steel using my gas stove which worked to some success, like for the drill bit darts in a previous video, but it did almost nothing to this steel, even tho I'm pretty sure it's not HSS. The stove is just not hot enough. In the future I'll use the torch for this and also to do some heat treating.

    Really Cool! you've inspired me to try my hand at making a knife or chisel knife! I was sort of under the impression that you needed all kinds of tools and jigs to get started. All I really have is a bench grinder, hand belt sander, drill press and rotary tool, etc. Really cool to see you make this with common tools!

    Here I am at 5 in the morning and I haven’t slept at all tonight. I’m in my last year of college and it’s finals week. And instead of sleeping or studying, I’ve been binge watching UA-cam vids all night and stumbled across your channel. I’m addicted now because watching these reminds me of when I was in elementary school (I’ll be 25 in July) and watching my poppy (grandad) in his workshop. He served in WW2 in the navy, and in his spare time learned how to do this kind of stuff. It became a hobby that he loved. A few years before he passed away in 2013 he made a couple of bookcases, a hat rack, and a cabinet for my bday and painted them blue. I still have them in my room. I hope to learn how to do this some day to be able to do what he did. And also because Ron Swanson is my favorite Parks and Rec character lol.

  • @juanrivero8
    @juanrivero8 7 років тому

    That is a beautiful knife and seems very useful. You could also use a castoff chisel. As to drilling tool steel there are two methods. The first is to use a carbide masonry bit. Carbide cuts steel. It is painful but it works. If you have a propane torch you can heat the spots that you want to drill red hot. Do not let the whole knife get red hot! This is called annealing and it softens the steel to where you can drill it.

    I like that alot. and yes they are versitile..Mora makes a knife with a chisel blade and alot of folks love it.
    I was worried about the handle when i saw you have to fill the space with extra wood...but it turned out fine..i woulda prolly used a colored spacer..and the handle seemed thin to me at first but the way you use it means that it works just fine. I would prolly feel more secure if the handle was wider tho..feel safer handleing it.
    But its a great way to use an old planer blade. and you did really well at keeping the temper and hardness of the blade by cooling it often. well done my friend!

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  7 років тому

      Yea, I was inspired by the Mora, I've said it in the title. The handle was inspired by the kiridashi knives that's why it's so slim and plain. I used the same wood for the insert trying to keep the handle simple and also because I'm not very familiar with using the belt sander so I had no clue how easy it would be to shape a sandwich of different materials.

    for drilling holes, try by by using a normal concrete drill - just sharpen it to a "common" angle and use a lot of cooling fluid - so the insert stays in place

    I bought a hultafors version which has a double bevel so doesn't function near as well as the mora with the single grind chisel bevel (I might re-grind it at some point). I mostly use it for light demolition and dismantling, its built very tough so you can hit away with a hammer on it. There are a couple of things about it that take awhile getting use to and make it less comfortable in use; when using it as a knife I've come close to cutting myself with the chisel tip a few times i think it messes with your perspective or hand to eye familiarity of typical knives, when using as a marking knife or for scribing the corner suffers a little with excessive wear and rounds off after necessary additional sharpening (a chamfered corner might fix this, i think I've seen it on other chisel/ demo knives), and for chisel work it struggles a little with small work as you cant choke up your hand grip because of the knife edge (again a reduced length knife edge might improve things). overall its useful but not as much as you originally think.
    I noticed some lidl DIY products in the video, so keep your eyes peeled for the 6 or 7 piece multi-use carbide drill bit set they sell as a special its very similar to the expensive bosch ones, i've used mine to drill some harder steels and it works great.
    nice job on the videos and the projects, a new subscriber here.

  • @ajeje1996
    @ajeje1996 6 років тому

    Good design, I especially like the handle. One thought/idea: you were right in keeping the blade cool as not to remove hardness; however, when grinding the handle, removing hardness may actually be beneficial, as the handle does not need to he hard like the blade, but flexible (as you probably know, hardness and flexibility are for the most part on opposite sides of the scale)
    EDIT: I didn't think you intended to actually use this as a chisel. For that purpose what you did was probably best. Well done.

  • @elrondeng

    You can drill HSS with an Artu drill they are not cheep but will drill just about anything. but as always care is needed and follow instructions. If you have access to a diamond grinding wheel you can fashion your own quite cheaply out of masonry bits, ground to a point used for drilling steel. the only problem with the latter is the silver solder used in masonry bits melts at much lower temperature so coolant water or white oil is necessary good luck give it a try
