I had to rewatch this because I just received my Pask Makes marking knife and it’s glorious! If you’re on the fence don’t be, I can’t describe how beautiful yet well made and freakin sharp his marking knife is! Thank you Pask, it’s beautiful and high quality and something I’ll cherish forever! I love that we can support you and your work as your contribution to the woodworking, welding and forging communities is tremendous and can’t be understated! I look forward to using this exquisite jewel in my garage and thank you for the plans that came with your marking knife! I will absolutely be building from your plans and with the help of my Pask Makes marking knife 🤘🏼
Pask that's awesome. Only advice I have is use contact adhesive instead of epoxy. Any epoxy or super glue can destroy the leather due to the exothermic reaction caused by the curing where as contact adhesive theres none and will stick solid. I'm a leather worker btw lol
There is an advantage to leaving one side completely flat (no leather) for woodworking marking where the craftsman needs to run the knife along the flat side of a thick board to mark another board beneath. A more accurate mark is made as opposed to coming in at an angle.
They say that necessity is the mother of all invention. In wood working you need a good marking knife. But, when craftsmanship creates function and beauty, then it is artisan. Great job of both!
Вы Мастер с большой буквы. С нетерпением жду Ваши видео. Такое терпение, такая обдуманность завораживает. Про сборки видео многие режиссеры позавидуют. Я Ваш фанат и мой лайк всегда. Учусь на Ваших работах.
I made one. If you make one you’ll be using it constantly. My favorite use is scraping corners of woodwork when restoring and painting. Worth its weight in gold. It came out great too.
Beautiful job! I don't yet have a belt sander of the quality I would need to make this but one day I might give it a try. The real gem here came during viewing this video! I noticed, briefly, that you mounted a thien separator on top of a blue (food grade) plastic barrel (had to return and pause to be certain). I had been stressing since the company that sold me the one I bought to transport water for my daughter's horses had nothing I wanted (old cinnamon, cardboard, barrel) thinking the blue barrel I have and no longer use might collapse under vacuum but I realize that not much vacuum pressure would exist there anyway. I have a cheap Harbor Freight dust and chip vac that I will use with my now unused blue barrel along with a, yet to be built, then separator so I can free up my shop vac which is attached to my chip and dust collection shop routing which works great (3" PVC copper and node/screw grounded end to end to prevent static ignition).
It is the accuracy of your work that never fails to astound me. The slightest difference in the grinding of the two bevels or curves, of even a tiny fraction of a mm, would stand out a mile yet it is perfect. You make it seem so easy when it really is not. Total respect!

Hi, quick advice, if you want to make your touchmark to be embossed more distinctively, you can either slightly dampen the leather before punching it in, or heat your touch mark (not very much, probably somewhere between 150 and 200°C, I don't know for sure) and then just press it in. I personally prefer the latter for the touchmark. The latter, by the way, works not only on veg tan leather, but oil tan as well.
This sounds stupid, but I love wearing my 'pask makes' shirt if mainly because people will ask me what it's about. I'll stop them short, open your videos channel, and force them to watch 30 seconds or so. You're a great inspiration. Never stop doing you.
Was going to buy a 20 dollar marking knife. Didn't really like any designs. Decided to make my own. I have O1 steel ready for this. Woodworking and knife making is what I like to do. Your knife is cool.
Nice video, Neil. I made a marking knife a couple of months ago...handy tool indeed. Glad the leather is only thing that got banged up when the mop caught it!
I have a Japanese marking knife. It is not to be careless around. The sharpneaa profile is similar to yours. It is sharpened on diamond and finished on leather.
I like the idea, and it is much easier than I thought. I don't have the tools you to process it, but with my skills it will be possible to make my own. And yep, if you don't try it will never be possible.

Nice! I made a similair pair of knives from an old stanley plane blade that I split down the middle. The hardened part of the blade can be snapped in two with a vice and some pliers. The remains of the keyhole in the blade makes for a good finger groove. One knife has a bevel on the right side only and the other on the left side, but they are stored in a double pouch so both options are are always availible. (The one-sided bevel reduces the equally fragile and scary point on the marking knife.) An easier project with no need for additional heat- treatment and a good use for a used-up plane blade.
Great job of the knife. Hardening and tempering are becoming a lost art and you were bang on. Perhaps 2 hours is a bit long I thought and it's important not to get any fingerprints on the surface once it's polished and before tempering. The colours are an important sign of achieving the correct temper. Really nice tool you made, thanks for sharing. Allan
Another great build. Have you ever tried using E6000? It's a really strong and very flexible adhesive. It can be used like glue or contact cement. It works great on attaching leather to metal. If that epoxy gives you troubles, try some E6000...
you have a incredible nice style for your projects, i really like the marking knife. the last two days i tried to make a marking knive like yours and i am going to try the plane as well, very nice stuff!
What kind of work did you do in your regular world life before UA-cam? Whatever it was I am betting you were/are good at it. You exhibit a high level of conscientiousness which I believe contributes to the high quality of every endeavor I see on this channel
Coulple of things from a leather crafter….cut your leather a bit wider you can get the excess off with the belt sander. Rough the handle blank for better grip before gluing, I use contact cement or epoxy, both work well. I’d you don’t want the leather for the handle to “walk”, dry fit holding with tape, drill holes through all 3 layers, use glue with long open time and set rivets. So cut, shape, grind the metal. Cut leather to rough shape, dry fit with tape or small clamps and drill holes for rivets or pins. Glue up and set, remove the excess leather with a sander….use the sander to round out the leather edges for burnishing. Anything, and I do mean ANYTHING can burnish leather, as long as friction and heat are created. My favorite is denim or sail cloth. I use carnauba wax for leather and wood. I’d save sharpening until last.
oh man. this resonated so strongly with me. more of a coffee guy usually, but im definitely going to brew a cup of tea and watch the next video that comes out! sounds so nice
Well done and, as always, you make to look it simple and easy. Even so, your final object is the result of a "simple" challenge, I/we noticed your belt grinder with all it`s gadgets and accessories. Mai we get a closer look to the "beast"
Not bad at all. Im thinking of using an old file thats too dull its very old 1950s so I'm hopeful its harder then normal steel. I could try and bring it back with lemon juice ive been told by a shop teacher 40 years ago this works i doubt it works on metals made in twian or China. But good old American metal going to have more carbon. I could just go buy some 4140 stress proof scraps. It seems to me somone should be selling blanks. Oh one more item you didn't mention an old plane blade I think I've got a few of them from old stanly planes.
Good day, I enjoyed your video.. just wanted to ask, what brand of belt sander are you using. i am thinking of getting something like that for my shop. thanks!! Don

I just purchased one of these that you began to sell. It's OUTSTANDING.
Thanks very much and thanks for the support! :)
Beautiful work - I think this should be your version of the Diresta ice pick! I want one.
I was thinking the same thing as I was watching.
We need this mass produced. Beautiful
Daniel Wahlig hopefully not as over priced

Made my own twist on one of these using this video as a tutorial for my father in law for Christmas. He loved it! Thank you so much for sharing this.

I reckon one flat side also makes it easier to use it as a prying tool, if ever needed :)
That’s how I make my marking knives; wood on just one side so the flat back can register to whatever it’s being pressed against. Works out well.
@_ David _ no wai >:(
@_ David _ I feel you, I wouldn't wanna destroy my tools either but in a pinch you gotta do what you gotta do. 😅

Pask! Glad to see you're uploading more frequently :) I watch every video!
Gorgeous. I feel like the addition of a couple of brass rivets would look nice and help with the problem of the leather slipping when clamped.
Nice looking knife. I do leather working and that handle is a nice touch.
You should look at case hardening so you could you make something out of mild steel
Very nice, I've got a few old Stanley #4 and #4 1/2 plane irons that will be perfect for a few of these.

another fantastic video and build ! Once again you proved what a versatile Craftsman you are !
Love the look of the beveled end. Probably wouldn’t put the scratch awl on the end of mine
I recently got my knife, I love it, very well made and very useful.

Almost certain he is/was a professional framer for photos/art and all round good guy.
I like the design very much! probably wouldn't use lether for the grip...
So minimalist and beautiful, it's like from another planet.
PS: obligatory "now that's a knife"
It is a beautiful artifact. I'm also glad to see that I don't require a marking knife to make a marking knife.
Nice! I'll make a few and give out as Christmas presents.
i made one from an old saw blade that looked exactly like that but without the awl and wooden scales:)
Lovely little marking knife! Your projects just keep getting better and better.
Great thing. I wonder how well the leather will adhere over time. Very pretty.
They look like they'd be lovely throwers.
As always, another great video of something very useful. Your creativity and ingenuity amaze me!
That turned out great, you should really sell some of those, they would sell like crazy
It really is quite impressive how smart you are with tooling. Good Aye.
Awesome looking and totally functional. I'm going to have to have a go at one for myself.
Love the design man. Simple, functional and looks good
You are an amazing craftsman and you’re always a pleasure to watch when you create something beautiful!
Maybe for a future project you could make a forge and try make something similar to a marking knife or make something like a hard mallet
Actually ignor that i just saw another video where you used a forge
Great work!

Great looking marking knife!

Love the leather handle. I like tha it is not perfect. It has a patina of use on it.
It's a beautiful tool, well done
Nice marker. Try shellac on the leather as a finish some time! You can always wax and buff it after.

Your craftsmanship with scraps is amazing.

Once the magnet no longer sticks, the piece is hot enough to quench and harden.
