I love the hand drill as a prepper tool. They would be invaluable tools for long term shelter building IMHO. My grand dad was a master carpenter and left me his entire set of antique drills and bits when he passed. They’re about 100 years old but work like new. I treasure them as both heirlooms and as valuable tools. Thanks for sharing sir.
I've also put a brace in my truck tool box. Also with survival uses there's also general repair uses. Say you're out somewhere and need to put in or remove a few screws. Just get out the brace and a simple bit kit and you've got it. No batteries to run out either. I have a few auger bits, a few metal bits, and some drivers.
Hold onto those hand drills! I am searching for some and let me tell you, they are not easy to find. I'm sure I'll stumble onto them at a yard sale or something, given enough time. Anyway good luck & God bless!
@@MattrixNY Keep your eyes out at estate sales, yard sales, antique shops, and craigslist. Somehow I ended up with 6, most for under $3. Be sure to inspect the chuck and make sure it works and all the pieces are there. If the ratchet is frozen you can probably loosen that up with some love and oil. You can use regular round shank metal bits in them, but they do slip with less torque than in a 3 jaw chuck. You can run 1/4" hex bits fine, and you can run the 3/8" hex shank screw point wood augers from the hardware store. But keep your eyes out for the square taper shank bits in good condition - watch videos on how to sharpen them before you buy so you know what to look for in the tip condition.
@@MattrixNY Yeah they’re way too sentimental and valuable to me to ever get rid of mine. You’re right. They’re getting very hard to find and when you do find the rare ones that are still in reasonably good shape they can get pretty pricey as well. Best of luck to you and good hunting.
I love Alan's explanation of the Kukri and how it cuts. Many people get frustrated with this tool/weapon because it is different to other cutting tools/weapons, but when you learn how it is supposed to be used, and how a person utilizes the full potential of the blade and cutting power, it truly is a powerful little cutting tool/weapon. As Alan said, for its size there are few things that compete. Now they are heavy, so know that ahead of time. That is also why they are effective for their size. So if weight is a problem go with say a medium camp axe. H&B forge makes an incredible medium camp axe that you can't beat for the money. It's like a cross between a tomahawk and a viking camp axe. Great survival tool. It is my choice personally. And the handle slips out of the head so there are many options as far as use, and if the handle breaks it's simple to carve another because it's a simple friction fit. But back to the Kukri, it is a great option for survival and EDC. Don't knock it till you try it, but learn to use it properly and you will be amazed at its potential.
I have a very large pruning saw, and a tarp with cordage added to all that. I do not carry a brace and bit or any kind of drill. The tarp is nice for something to lay on while doing vehicle repair, etc. in addition to an outdoor shelter option. I carry a 36" pulaski in lieu of the mattock, in addition to a 26" single bitted axe.Everything that will fit goes into a tub that is big and tough enough to sit or stand on, and will hold water, etc. if need be. I have a winch, but still carry a good rope and tow strap.

I have seen the kurkuri knife for sale and up until now I never thought it to be that practical…..your presentation of this knife just told me I need to have one for my survival cache….
The bit and brace is an excellent idea for a vehicle kit! I have a Scotch-Eye auger for my long-range pack in a 1" diameter for putting holes in stuff when away from my vehicle, and it is considerably more packable than a bit and brace is.
I would add a Corona branch saw / bow saw (or similar). Basic box of tools, zip ties / duct tape and fluids (oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid). Gallon of water. "A Come Along" winch, heavy duty carabiners, old pair of hiking boots w/merino wool socks, and leather / Mechanix gloves.
By the way, I enjoy your videos, and your talks on podcasts. I keep the tools in Rubbermaid totes because I know we go on a family trip I am going to remove a lot of it. Its funny though, after a late night ball game. those Mountain Houses in the car have feed some of the team before. Both of us can think of a lot worst meals than Chicken and Rice, or Beef Macaroni. Having rain gear, thermals and a wool blanket in the car. Has made a miserable days into non events. In the south, during a snow apocalypse. I have walked home a few times, it was just easier to walk 45 minutes, than spend a 4 hrs in car, and get a disabled / damaged vehicle from it.
Excellent choices. I’ve carried a small axe and the Spetznaz shovel for decades now. The TOPS Bushcrafter Kukuri is a great choice. I have one, but I actually carry the TOPS M4X Punisher in my jeep-kit.
Hey Alan, I have an Ontario Kukri I had a Kydex sheath made for it and It's a beast. As a self defence blade or a bushcraft blade it fill the bill. Next to me in the truck is a .45.
I like your knife and have a straight blade knife with a full tang blade and it is heavy duty. I purchased the knife this year from Amazon and love it. It is made by Schrade and is a full size survival knife. I keep a folding knife in my backpack as a backup weapon, and survival tool. I got it while in the Air Force and it was issued to me by one unit I was temporarily assigned to.
I wish so bad Mr. Kay would do like an hour long seminar on the survival knife and importance etc of using the Kukri. I would definately pay money for that dvd no questions asked.
My most important tools for me personally as a bushcrafter are my Silky F180 folding saw (7" blade), Morakniv Companion knife (4" Blade), Schrade SCHF37 knife (7" blade) and a garden spade. I also love having my 1" auger, although I'd really like to get a hold of one that's the _"Scotch Eye Auger"._ I do also have a Silky BigBoy folding saw (14" blade). I get things done just fine with only those tools.

In my vehicle I keep a 4 lb. ABC fire extinguisher. I once encountered on the road a driver next to his vehicle which was ablaze. He did not know what to do. The fire extinguisher quickly put out the fire before it got worse.

Good Video, though I wish you had shown more of your vehicle kit! It's easy to see that the Topps Kukri Knife has earned a permanent spot on your All Star Team. I like it too but it's a bit pricey....now the hand drill, that was a tremendous deal!
I just added a hand drill to my bag of implements for the grid down scenario even though I have a grip-up option (solar generator). After seeing this I'll look into the Kukri knife although I do have something similar to it. Never met a knife I didn't like. This year I'm hoping for the Roy Rogers and Trigger folder knife. Like I said . . .
Awesome idea on the Brace and Bit! Love the Khukuri, wouldnt leave home with out mine. You can really split someone's wig with a Khukuri in a major kinda way.

Just not experienced in Middle Eastern weapons, and I like all (or at least most) of my blades to have at least some tactical capability. I noticed you had twisted rope, not the braided type is there a reason for that? What is your opinion of folding saws, I like the bahcos over the silky saws, on price and availability of spare blades. Great tip on the brace and bits, buying good quality older equipment build to last a lifetime rather than some cheap p.o.s. from asia. Every carboot/flea market i goto i am always on the lookout for old manual tools even if they need some repairs. Take care, God bless one and all.
What kind of knife would you recommend for a female or someone with small hands? Or is it more about learning technique for how best to hold/grip whatever knife you choose/have, no matter your hand size?
Ms. Somes, Asking what knife to recommend is like asking what gun should a person get. First investigate blade steel types, the different characteristics edge retention, ease of sharpening, toughness, durability, corrosion resistance etc. Figure out what you want a blade to do. Figure out what blade you can pay for. Then find one that fits your hand and does what you need it to do. Part of owning a blade is keeping it sharp. A sharp blade is safer and more useful than a dull knife. A rusted blade can be saved, but it is usually a lot of work. Words like stainless, surgical, tactical mean nothing when describing blade steel. There should be letters and numbers. AUS8, 8Cr13MoV, Also need to consider what the local laws are for carrying a blade. I have a 2.5" pocket knife that I carry on the pack for the dog's water when I walk him. I have a Made in America Schrade sheath knife from 1990 that I carried when I used to do a lot of backpacking back then. I have a medium cost kukri for cutting brush in the yard. I have a 3.5" blade pocketknife for general purpose. I have a small camping hatchet, I have a light axe and I have a splitting maul. Also, a cheap branch trimming saw, an extendable manual tree pruner with shear and saw blade and a Stihl chain saw. For sharpening I have a small flat diamond stone at my desk, a cheap cylindrical diamond stone at my workbench for the interior curve on the kukri and serrated knives, a two sided coarse and fine grit diamond stone at my workbench and a selection of files oh, and a diamond stone on the sheaths of the kukri and the 30 year old Schrade. But go get started with blades and sharpening. It won't cost much. hahaha No, seriously, they are all useful tools and have their place.

Why not a 36 inch bow saw. Does not need fuel, and is a lot more efficient then an axe. When I hiked in Yellowstone in 85 and 91, I carried a 18 inch bow saw, with an extra blade. A lot easier to clear trails with that. And yes I too have a "Boys" axe. A very nice KLO, or Kukri Like Object. Kinda small.
I know I'm way late to this party but was wondering what thoughts I might get on replacing the kukiri ( I know I blew the spelling on that) with the okc sp 53, bolo machete?
A sling/kaiser/ditch/swop is total different to a kukri ! I have a few of both most sling etc blades have a long handle for agricultural use and a kukri is a nepalese single handed weapon still carried by the gurkas in the british army.
Folding saws and hand chainsaws (i don`t know the correct english term for it) can be very usefull as well as a file (mikov even has them on their knifesheaths). A swiss army knife which has a saw on it is a great backup outdoors. Don`t take one with like a million tools or a very big one or you`ll probably won`t have it with you. From what i`ve heard they even hold their own and don`t rust in the jungle. Have you ever tried smocks (not the "sas" versions but the ones with the many pockets)? As far as i know they are way more common here in europe than in the us. Also has any of you guys infos on the infamous rhodesian / south african recce survival belt? Hard to find infos i haven`t even seen a picture.

I keep a set of fencing pliers with me. Hammer, cutter, twister..... all in one. I am more urban based though so terrain for getting home is different
I like the military shovel with wood handle that has the foldable shovel and pick.

I really like the tool selection. But what I can't get out of my head is where the mind of a police officer would go seeing axe+shovel+rope in the trunk of a car. lol
Most people who homestead, an axe, shovel and rope would be a very common thing

Why not a 36 inch bow saw. Does not need fuel, and is a lot more efficient then an axe. When I hiked in Yellowstone in 85 and 91, I carried a 18 inch bow saw, with an extra blade. A lot easier to clear trails with that. And yes I too have a "Boys" axe. A very nice KLO, or Kukri Like Object. Kinda small.
Two other things I always keep in my vehicle. A new small gas can (Empty) and a good sized tarpaulin.

A sling/kaiser/ditch/swop is total different to a kukri ! I have a few of both most sling etc blades have a long handle for agricultural use and a kukri is a nepalese single handed weapon still carried by the gurkas in the british army.

Folding saws and hand chainsaws (i don`t know the correct english term for it) can be very usefull as well as a file (mikov even has them on their knifesheaths). A swiss army knife which has a saw on it is a great backup outdoors. Don`t take one with like a million tools or a very big one or you`ll probably won`t have it with you. From what i`ve heard they even hold their own and don`t rust in the jungle.
Have you ever tried smocks (not the "sas" versions but the ones with the many pockets)?
As far as i know they are way more common here in europe than in the us.
Also has any of you guys infos on the infamous rhodesian / south african recce survival belt? Hard to find infos i haven`t even seen a picture.

Actually, survival? Is very straight forward. Honestly. It's simplistic, but often ignored.
