Another way you could so it, instead of using the shape builder tool, is to select all the white objects and turn them into a compound path, then subtract it from the black ellipse.
Great and easy tutorial. I've been using Adobe Illustrator for nearly 10 years now and even I learned a few things from this short video. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
Hey, kudos for a fine simple and clear tutorial on basic graphics creation in Illustrator. I must apologize for being a nit-picker... but the end result in fact depicts a lens diaphragm, not a shutter. When in use, the blades depicted in this graphic pivot to provide the variable size of the aperture within a lens. The actual shutter resides within the camera body, just in front of the sensor (or film plane for you old-schoolers out there.)
Hey Justin! Thanks for the tutorial :) Just wanted to ask if the individual editable parts can be done in Photoshop? because i need to make something like this to put into after effects so i can animate each shape alone! Great work and it would be nice if you could let me know :)
This one is pretty good tutorial, Justin. Thank you! It was useful. Anyway, I would also like to ask, why Shape Builder Tool, if there is Minus Front in Pathfinder? You could also Unite all the white parts and then do the Minus Front. The bottom horizontal line seems little bit wider in the end of the video. Was that all aligned to pixel grid?
At 3:45 after you click on the black boxes and they disappear, I see all of the "blue outlines", but then if I hit delete everything disappears and I have to go back and "undo merge" multiple times...can you go over that specific area more? I'm using CS5 so maybe that's creating a difference.
When deleting the lines and hexagon from the circle. You could just select everything then go to: Window > Pathfinder When that box appears choose the one which is named Minus Front. Just a little bit quicker :)
Can you tell me how you delete all this shapes at the 03:50 because i delete it and when i want to color what's left it all turns black ;o i've not idea what i done wrong
"Everything else except what was behind it.." I get to the bit where all the parts are deleted at 03.58 but cant remove that bit so all the shapes are left. :( If I press backspace to delete the final black part at 03.58, it deletes every thing because when I go to select with the box at the end to show the pieces that are left, nothing is there. Never mind, I checked the layers and was deleted the layer with the black object. Thanks for this video.
no difference. A good graphic software always have 20 different ways to achieve one goal. Everybody likes his own tools. It's a question of feeling and speed. This method works fine and is fast, Pathfinder would have been even a bit faster I'd say.
who gives a shit, Justin Seeley I thank you for this simple easy to follow tutorial for us ADHD artists....be cool if you could make more on other logo designs...we of the Bunny Ninja Clan salute you!
wtf do you after you click the shutter icon to get the lines to disappear? (3:45) this is a tutorial, explain what you do instead of just doing it and saying other crap

You can also select it from the tool box
Just an FYI. Technically, unless you are using a large format camera the icon is called an "aperture" not a shutter.

+Andrey Yurchenko you can use octagon shape. :)
"Everything else except what was behind it.." I get to the bit where all the parts are deleted at 03.58 but cant remove that bit so all the shapes are left. :(
