Interestingly enough, while they used special effects to put Forrest Gump next to John Lennon, Dick Cavett actually came in and filmed his part. They gave him a wig to replicate his 1970s hairstyle, and he joked that he liked it so much he took it home with him.
yep, thats true.. he actually filmed that part in the the time of this film, and they made him look younger like he did when he recorded the show in the 70s.
I saw this film years before becoming familiar with Lennon's music. But the first time I heard Imagine, I instantly had my aha moment about this scene, hearing the lyrics and recalling the words from the film.
John definitely had the lyrics already in his mind because who says “they don’t have anything?” As “no possessions?” Even if you are high most of the time
i get that youre joking, but your original comment doesn't make sense either. John never actually said that in the real interview, they vfx'd over his mouth and used a fake voice@@sunnex474

These special effects were a first in a movie, which was a big part of its success. The movie should be in the list of movies that introduced cutting edge technology (of its time)...
In the original footage, Lennon's wife Yoko Ono was in Forrest's seat. One can notice the difference in the hue and saturation of colors of Forrest Gump.
youre so right... however no one really seems to do this idea in films nowadays do they? I think the grainy quality of 70s television helped this work so well.
“some years later, that nice young man from england was on his way home to see his little boy, and was signing some autographs. for no particular reason at all, somebody shot him” i know this line is from a movie, but it still makes me feel sad about john lennon 😞😞
What the filmmakers did with the effects in this scene is amazing, yet I can tell the difference in quality between the pieces of footage used in this. Even with the TV filter applied, Tom Hanks and Dick Cavett's scenes are clearly lit differently and do look crystal clear, while John Lennon, who (I believe) was painstakingly rotoscoped, looks a bit blurry, while the chairs Hanks and Cavett contrast with the lighting on Lennon's chair. Wished they could blur the footage more so that they could match with the John Lennon footage while also manipulating Lennon's mouth properly to fit the newly spoken dialogue, as well as hiring a proper sound alike. With that out of the way, this film is amazing. 😎

There we see the childhood idol of the janitor of The Breakfast Club, who was also president before Lincoln (according to Leo DiCaprio). It is also cited by Ferris Bueller. Plus... he invented sampling with Tomorrow Never Knows... That Mr. Lennon is very cool. I'm just kidding, he was more important than I think.
Not to be mean or anything but because of his disability did Forrest misread Dicks question when he asked him about what was China like did Dick mean he wanted to hear about Forrest playing ping pong and not what China was like as a place and just politely went along with Forrests answer
Technically this scene was so well done but the modified dialogue was odd: Forrest: "In China they never go to church" Lennon: "No religion too?" Cavett: "Hard to imagine" Lennon: "Well, it's easy if you try, Dick" Lennon would never have argued like that. That sounded more like something a convervative presidential candidate would have said.
Ironically, in this very same Dick Cavett interview the song Imagine is shown, so by the time this was made Lennon had already made the song. Lowkey uninmersive lol
Most of the “Forrest actually inspired this incredibly popular thing” scenes are a bit of a reach… but there’s just something so funny to me about “no religion, too?”
Well if you listen to the song Revolution that kinda explains it. One one version of the song he sings, "But when you talk about destruction, don't you know you can count me out."
@Jared Jams to counter, at the intro to Lennon’s solo song, “Woman” he also quotes Mao Zedong, “Women hold up half the sky” in reference to all workers being equal regardless of sex
@Jared Jams again, listen to Lennon’s, “Woman” at the intro he quoted Mao Zedong, “Women hold up half the sky” in reference to workers’ rights and working class unity regardless of sex or creed

The scene is witty and funny but takes such a dark turn without much effort at all. Arguably one of the darkest moments in the movie.
@Cristo Alba Yeah it's looked over constantly. I like the the reference a lot for how dark it is. Good cinema.
The way it fades to TV static as Forrest tells of how he died is chilling

This is how he wrote Imagine.
Which is interesting because "Imagine" was released two months prior to this appearance on "Dick Cavett" by Lennon...

I am just now noticing that this scene fictionally made him come up with Imagine.
