I lived in Japan for two years serving in the Navy. The nicest and most polite people Iv ever met. I wish we could adopt the same standards here in the US.
I've never visited Japan, but they do seem so friendly and courteous. Especially to tourists. Their cities appear to be so clean, and the crime rate appears to be low. They are also leagues ahead of the rest of us when it comes to useful technologies. It's a shame that they chose to be on the losing side in WW2. But they certainly have lived and learned from the past.
Capsule hotels: YES we need them! LOTS of them! Right now, especially. So many working homeless. (me too). There is no need for a great amount of luxury, just safe, comfortable places to sleep, with access to a bathroom. Travellers could take great advantage as well. Yes, I would stay in one! Thank you for sharing your experience! Robot hotel: a little creepy, but we could get used to it.
The reason they don't have them in the U.S is because they'd be filled with prostitutes and drug addicts and all kinds of weirdos who would bring in all kinds of disgusting bugs and stuff. They'd have to constantly be hiring new front desk staff every week because they'd get disgusted and quit because they couldn't take all the abuse from the clients and arguing with them about following the rules about what they can and can't bring in and cleanliness. It's a cultural thing. Maybe people in Japan can handle this sort of thing, but I don't think it would go over well in the U.S.
@@Melissa0774 Very, very true. Shelters have enough trouble enforcing their own policies on cleanliness, grooming standards, substance use, etc. I can’t imagine hotels like that here.
@@Melissa0774 I don't know if you have them in the US, but in germany there are some clean/safe rooms in major cities in which drug addicts can safely use their substances, get fresh needles and, if neccessary, immediate medical attention. The cities that built tham have a lot of less drug use on the streets, or overdose deaths. Maybe building one of those next to the capsule hotel could be an idea?
@@RevCode There's an ongoing debate about that sort of thing here. Most people are against it because they think it encourages people to keep doing drugs and they don't want to support them.
@@Melissa0774 I see. That same debate was here, however people eventually came to the conclusion that nobody actually wants to be addicted and that it is better to give them a way to consume safely, since they will consume anyway, and be able to offer help at the same time. In fact, there are finally also a few places where heroin addicts can get medically pure heroin to inject, if all other therapy options failed. They are as far as I know not yet widespread and only pilot projects, but apparently they work very well in other countries.
Me: Can't go anywhere with other people not even talk to others Japan: We have a hotel with only humanoid robots Me: Still not enough Japan: One of them is a dinosaur receptionist Me: Say no more
Like I don't understand why hotels still got receptionist, there are quite many hotels in Europe there you can just visit with a phone or log into the hotel through a screen in the lobby. Why do you need humanoid robots?
I love Japan. They're getting there to having Detroit: Become Human-style androids first. And if that wasnt enough, they're having so much fun by making a Hotel receptionist look like a dinosaur. Why not? Androids dont have to look *only* like humans.
For me, the problem is that big business is getting into robotics to cut labor costs and leave people out hanging to dry. If robotics is to remain a positive development, we need to take it out of the hands of big business, decommodify the robots, and have a robust UBI among other things.
I stayed at one of these in Osaka. There was a reservation mismatch, so the Dinobot wound up calling a human who was hiding in another room. That was the only contact I had with anyone the whole time I was there...felt kind of lonely.
I used to work in a Michelin star restaurant in Japan and I had the work of three people and I was constantly told by the executive chef that $10 an hour was a great wage. the simple fact is that Japanese Society breaks its citizens down into little Legos to be put anywhere at any time. There is a very famous saying and it's extremely important to understand: "the nail that sticks out gets hammered in".
I'm very introverted and anxious about new situations so this kind of hotel is basically the perfect thing for me. The less social interactions the better.
The reason I think capsule hotels aren’t used anywhere else in the world especially western countries is because it would just be a mess and really dirty. Where japan has a more clean and respectful culture
They need to make an update video, this is from 2015. Considering our current situation with the Covid virus and people not wanting to go back to work, maybe we’ll see more robots sooner than we expected.
Expand a bit on the subject for those curious... I'd say Hen na Hotel is mostly for the novelty factor, not how hotels will look like in the future in Japan. I'm saying this, and you can confirm by staying at more recently built hotels there, because the actual system to reduce number of employees and general human to human interaction is closer to those vending machines or ATMs than robots, and they already exist in several hotel chains. In fact, they came way before Hen na Hotel I think. I stayed in a couple of hotels back in 2018 close to Narita station that had them. They still had staff because lots of people were still not used to the fully automated system, but it was there as an option, and people who were used to it went directly to those instead of going to the reception desk. Checkout also done automatically. One hotel basically had an unattended urn for you to just throw your room keycard in and leave. And really, the reception desk was there more to teach those who didn't know how to work with the automated machines, rather than as an alternate method... because your check in had to go through them one way or another - it's all in the system. Not all that different from other stuff that has been automated long time ago, like ticket machines in fast ramen restaurants, or kaitenzushi. It's also not all about making business cheaper by not hiring employees... it's about finding employees at all. Lower wage jobs such as hotel staff, kombini staff, and a bunch of other places, nowadays in Japan are hiring more and more foreigners. Because there are less and less young japanese people to work on those, and they don't want to anyways, much like how it is in other developed nations. Problem is, even though Japan has been opening up for foreign workers more and more over the years, reality is they are still a very small minority - in comparison to other countries and the general population I mean. And so, you do have a hard time finding people to work in those places one way or another. Plus of course, there sometimes is the thinly veiled racism/jingoism or just plain fear to put staff that is all foreign, particularly in Japan with the whole omotenashi image to care for. Not to mention the language barrier and other obstacles. High end hotels, traditional ryokans or onsens, and more expensive types of accomodations usually have an all japanese staff, family run or just higher paying jobs due to the size of operation. Cheaper smaller business hotels have to lower costs somehow, so they will try all sorts of different things. Speaking of, capsule hotels might look kinda futuristic and unique, particularly for westerners, but one of the main reasons why they exist, endured, and are still going to this day has less to do with futurism, and more to do with practicality. And origins has less to do with futurism, and more to do with the history of accomodations in Japan, and a particular need. Put very simply, they are a cheap place for workers who lost the last metro/train ride to crash in, because it can be cheaper to just sleep in a capsule hotel than pay a cab to go back home. Sleep there and get the first train in the morning back home, or just go back to work I guess. xD But of course, lots of people crash there on weekends after the obligatory binge drinking happy hour. This is also why you have business hotels in Japan, that have extremely cramped rooms with weirdly a whole ton of practical stuff to use included (toiletries, electric kettle, sometimes even a free to use smartphone), but you also have hotels with larger rooms without all of those things included. They are designed as places to crash for business people, locals, not for tourists with large bags and whatnot. As omotenashi is a hugely important japanese cultural thing, I highly doubt staffed hotels will just cease to exist. But for business hotels, love hotels, capsule hotels and other forms of hotels that are designed with practicality and locals in mind rather than tourists... yep, it's already going that way. Automated, no human interaction. o/

He made the baggage handler look inefective he should of went straight to his room unlocked it and put the kettle on it would of been at the door by then. i was thinking about it because of the way he was with it made me want to kick it over. its one thing asking alexa for answers and its another thing alexa sitting pretending to be a human even if it could walk around it would just be easier if there was a microphone in every room. Its a novelty precise tasks can really so far only be done by a fixed position mechanical arm and even then thats for laborious pre determined tasks such as manafacture anything else is just real work. the programming the build of it the engineering of parts the parts being moved from location to location parts being available its not just robots but the whole logistics of everything working together in unison a break in the chain is easily fixed by the human mentality of working together and being able to move about freely to do what needs to be done depending on what it is that needs to get things running smoothly again imagine a network of computers trying to do the same when the gaming industry can't even keep a hacker out of a game software crashes endless updates that end up messing something else up or completeing something your still not quite happy with because although its a mechanical digital system it can still never live up to the creators or users expectations wich in a way shows just how good humans are striving for that perfection to keep our hive in order it would be a sad day to see us replaced on a mass scale and no human should be outwitted and made to feel less superior to a lump of software that cant interact in the world the way we do . That will be facing daily the ego of the many creators of the software like having bill gates in your face everyday doing your head in .software coding will soon be as easy for average person as it is for the few who kept it close for so long holding back knowledge enterprise and buisness and money making opportunities from it .the cat is out the bag with the basics and just like math having an unfinished end problem that doesnt work there is a cap that code will get to they can create different keys different symbols numerical systems but it will always just be another alphabet. Pre made engines obviously will keep a few down for only so long with the engine only demanding code be written as a language a story of commands but the understanding of the system that comes from just these basics will demand precision and understanding of the underlying mechanic that makes it work

My first question to the robots would be what are you thinking about? I would love to metaphysically take layers of the robots perspectives and try and mirror them back so they understand their own coded minds…what a trip were in these days.
even though we have robots, we still have to have humans to make sure they’re always gonna function correctly or not break down. we will always need humans around for these things which is honestly reassuring.
In a way I kind of hope so I mean if you just want to get off then just get off and don't waste your time trying to have to have a conversation or find somebody who's in a play all those games just do it.
We need as mankind to have time to get used to this. In a much slower pace. I feel like the developers/ companies/ decision makers doesn’t care about the implications this might have to our planet. Instead to only see it as a progression.. I believe it’s gonna be some sort of chaos. IF it develops to fast.
Sounds creepy yet interesting at the same time. I wouldn’t mind this on a small scale, but for it to become the norm, I don’t think it would be a great idea. Myself personally, I prefer dealing with humans, for a variety of reasons. I’ll give you a good example: When I am dealing with the bank or whatever, and I’m talking to an automated system, it can get annoying sometimes. I’m like damn it, connect me to a human, I don’t want to talk to a bloody machine! And then I just keep spamming 0 until my call is answered by an actual person. Oh, and I am not surprised Japan is doing this. It’s almost like it is a trademark of theirs, to be technically advanced and quirky.
I am an extroverted introvert and I feel at a peace mostly when I'm alone but I also appreciate socializing as much as possible when I feel like it. You are introverted to the power of 99999
Many hotels in Europe don't use any more a lot receptionist, but instead use a screen in the lobby to book a room, or you can book a room beforehand and then just use your phone to get into your room. There is no real reason really for a humanoid receptionist, because they need more repairs, cost more and are generally useless.

Me: Can't go anywhere with other people not even talk to others

Like I don't understand why hotels still got receptionist, there are quite many hotels in Europe there you can just visit with a phone or log into the hotel through a screen in the lobby. Why do you need humanoid robots?

I love Japan. They're getting there to having Detroit: Become Human-style androids first. And if that wasnt enough, they're having so much fun by making a Hotel receptionist look like a dinosaur. Why not? Androids dont have to look *only* like humans.
Androids do need to look like humans because that is what an android is. An robot designed to look human.
Hopefully they don’t become deviants

The whole check in at the hotel was done mostly through the touch screen. The robot was essentially just a prop.
That little “was I helpful?” in the end was kinda cute :)

I love how the Japanese are so inventive and cute at the same time. Just added the Henn-na Hotel to my bucket list!
the robots kind of make me uncomfortable 😐
For me, the problem is that big business is getting into robotics to cut labor costs and leave people out hanging to dry. If robotics is to remain a positive development, we need to take it out of the hands of big business, decommodify the robots, and have a robust UBI among other things.
Damn Japan you scary.
In our timeline Japan is where Skynet is born.
I stayed at one of these in Osaka. There was a reservation mismatch, so the Dinobot wound up calling a human who was hiding in another room. That was the only contact I had with anyone the whole time I was there...felt kind of lonely.
I swear I saw this on a mission in Cyberpunk 2077
What mission
I used to work in a Michelin star restaurant in Japan and I had the work of three people and I was constantly told by the executive chef that $10 an hour was a great wage. the simple fact is that Japanese Society breaks its citizens down into little Legos to be put anywhere at any time. There is a very famous saying and it's extremely important to understand: "the nail that sticks out gets hammered in".
Very interesting, I know the Japanese are very work oriented to the point that they sacrifice things in their Iives for their job

Had to go way down comments before found someone to speak this.
God it would be a war zone in San Francisco
They need to make an update video, this is from 2015. Considering our current situation with the Covid virus and people not wanting to go back to work, maybe we’ll see more robots sooner than we expected.
It would make my dreams come true to work for Vice. The way you guys report is so captivating and professional. Much love💜
Sleep there and get the first train in the morning back home, or just go back to work I guess. xD
But of course, lots of people crash there on weekends after the obligatory binge drinking happy hour.

Japan is such an interesting country. In my bucketlist is definitely Japan.
What I want to know is what plans all of these automation champions have for the vast majority of mankind who will be rendered useless by such advancement. It's mind-bending that no one seems to be talking about this
Its basically fairground animatronics with a seperate machine that does what a mobile does i bet half of them would last about as long as the taxi driver in total recall. Pre made engines obviously will keep a few down for only so long with the engine only demanding code be written as a language a story of commands but the understanding of the system that comes from just these basics will demand precision and understanding of the underlying mechanic that makes it work
The one percenters don't want a lot of people around. They want to depopulate people and replace them with robots instead. The Coronavirus is the beginning of Change that the super rich wants. If you notice sence the so called Covid19 you never hear of the super rich dying from it.The robots gonna run everthing and they do have robots that are weaponized. The poor people gonna wind up either dead or slaves.
