Anyone currently following the light tackle playlist I made this film for light/med/heavy so i can slot the one film into all three playlists (once i get to them). I hope some find it useful, there's also a list of all the gear from the film in the description ^ yew!
*These floats do what they say they do **enjoyable.fishing** recommend they come on and off easily and can be adjusted in seconds to adjust to the depth of the water you are fishing in. Used these with trout magnet lures and did really well with them in the stream!*
Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
the origin of that rigging technique was actually from a guy called Glen Beers (legendary north coast spin man) - its most likely where Dennis got it from
already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.
Dennis knows more than we make him out to be, cause we film him after a few beers !!!! GOLD !!! Dual rings ..... nice addition !! Always used inline hooks .... ,might go check out those others ...
"LOL, nobody enjoys an over-stretched split ring......except Brooksy, I reckon he might like one." Slipped that in nicely Briggsy, much more subtle than an over-stretched split ring!
Hey mate, great content. I'm not a kid (34) but just getting into fishing as a way to wind down after work etc, I don't know anyone else that fishes and like the idea of shore fishing with lures etc, these vids are really helping. I'm looking forward to the picking spots, tides, time of day, moonphase etc vids. Keep it up, Cheers
Great info Aaron! Another rule of thumb I'd like to add is to find your belly treb first, then go two sizes up for your tail single. Dont think Ive ever had this not work. Atleast with BKK GT REX'es/GT Recorders and Kudakos. So 4/0 treb/6/0 single, 5/0 treb/7/0 single, 6/0 treb/8/0 single and so on.
Great series of videos Briggsy! I'm teaching my 4 year old son to fish and these are very useful- the more i watch, the more i realise how little i know!
All briggsy video is the best! Especially information about lure. Full of information n easy to learn n understand. Thanks mate! Please more video on ur current n latest lure collection briggsy man
One thing I learned about 20 years ago with the metal lures is instead of the double splits we have a split on the lure then a Spro (230 lb) swivel then the hook. The hooks are an open eye siwash hook that you close after you put the swivel on. The fish can't get leverage to throw the lure no matter how hard it shakes it's head. The siwash style hook has a deep throat so it sets deep in the fish.
That double split ring on the metal lure blew my mind! Might have to try it myself and see if I hook more mackerel and mac tuna soon! Keep up the great work Briggsy.
Best explanation I’ve had for why you need such tough split rings is that when the lure is hooked to the fish, depending on the angle of the front and rear hooks, the fish can exert enormous lever forces across the lure/hooks, far more than the swimming/pulling force the fish can generate to swim away (ie a lot more than your drag). Simple rule of thumb: use rings & swivels on the lure rated at ~2 to 3 x your line/drag. (Eg if using 20lb braid, use 40~60lb rated rings).
Awesome tutorial for someone starting out. We use Tactical Anglers clips (75-125lb rating) and don’t really use split ring when attaching to main line. Make swapping out lures way easier.
Awesome video Briggsy! Top tips as always. So very interesting information about hook selection and placement as well. I remember in the Fish head video, Duncan mentioned about tuning lures with hook size but, you took it to another level!! Legend!! Keep um coming brother! Always frothin for more! Aloha! 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙 Stay safe!
I've had split rings and hooks destroyed cast after cast by Mahseer in freshwater even after upgrading to inline singles with the right orientation, although I've never had much issues in the salt. I'll try to get my hands on to the stuff you recommend. I'll also try that swivel in the front which I think might help. Thanks for the video!
This video is just FILLED with good information. Thanks Briggsy for doing this all. PS. you need to check out Malosi lures. They look incredible both in the hand and in a fish's mouth.
Very good idea with these videos! keep them up Briggsy Yeww. I lost what would have been my biggest jewie on a samaki vibelicious because I bent the hooks on the out of packet trebles. This is after upgrading all my light tackle religiously and that day I just said stuff it it'll be fine.... well it wasn't. Never be complacent.
Hey Brigsey have you ever seen the curved discs weights with a centre slot designed to slip over the belly wire of the lure before the split ring and hook are added? If so have you ever used them to help anchor a lure against strong current or side wind?
Loved the shit out of this small series you made about setup! i fish in denmark and love the adreneline no matter what type of fish i get on my shitty small 27 gram lures :P my hook have a tendency to rust real quick and so with the split rings but holy shit i never knew i could change em and get better results! tried changing sizes on my best lures after watching this video. caught 8 fish in 3-4 hours :D cheers mate! and please keep making more videos! they are the highlight of my day and a dream for me to be there with you guys ! keeps me well motivated! YEEEEEEW
Briggsy, rinsing/washing saltwater off after using hooks, Spray your Hooks with Silicone Spray before storage to stop rusting I find it easier to put split rings on the hook first then put the hook on the lure
I am finding all the lure rigging info helpful, educational and entertaining, even though I can't fish for the big stuff you do. It still applies to the pissy little bonito lures I plan to use. Tks from The Loser
On the subject of the Raiders, Frank at Busted Tackle made a run of the original thin pattern not so long ago. Maybe hit him up, or see if he has any left.
Nicely done, I've been changing hooks on stick baits for years, you have gr8 tips there for newbies or seasoned vets tricking it with new tech, the world is a changing place my friends, don't be shy about tricking it out with old ideas and new tech,
thanks for the vdo and arranging hooks ... many time for me when i change hooks the action of lure changes and I had no idea what was wrong ... i will correct myself right away... thanks thanks for very informative vdo
Briggsy!! 😁 been a while have seen a video! Been doing your FG knot briggsy style and it worked! Before I use to do alberto, now im hooked with your FG!! 😉😉😉 keep reeling! UAE base here 😁😁😁
As someone who grew up fly fishing freshwater rivers and now lives in SE QLD, this series is GOLD! Doing a trip to Moreton in a few months and I'm frothin to get some quality fishing time in w/o kids and missus in tow.. quick question, when you're storing your tackle, are you always taking hooks/splits off? Hate having my expensive lures all banged up in the tackle box so I do it but wondering what anyone else does to protect their gear. Cheers Briggsy, keep up the killer content mate
FYI You should really weight your hooks on a small scale. This insures that the action of the lure is not compromised and that suspending lures can still remain suspending vs sinking like a stone due to the hooks being too heavy. Also don't forget to constantly sharpen your hooks- they should be sharp enough to dig into your fingernail when dragged across it.
Briggsy, great video as always. You and the Morningtide crew have made me spend a lot of coin on different gear! I am just wondering about the Shout Kudako ringed hooks as an alternative to using 2 x splitty's on the back of metals. Any difference or benefit either way?
Can ya show us how you sharpen your hooks at home vs when ya on the ledge. Also if you wash your hooks with fresh water and keep rice in your hook box it will draw out all the moisture and prevent rust. cheers mate
Great info. My friend how about adding how you sharpen the hooks. You have opened my eyes on this never even thought about changing the hooks out. Thanks from Central Florida
smooth swivel onto the front split ring of metal lure assembly? u dont tie leader directly onto a split- right? btw- great work in all aspects of these tutorials and ur wild&tender escapades too.
Hi Mate, definitely the most important one to show a swivel on haha, I always use a swivel on all lures except plastics but never put them on the lures like in this tutorial (because they’re already attached to my leader and i just use split ring pliers to switch out the lures). But yeah prolly should have shown a swiv on the metals lol
Briggsy mate so I have a question regarding the swivel on all your lures.. do you then tie a loop knot to your swivel or uni or chain which knot do you use bud? Cheers
Oh and with trebles, some aren't inline style (like VMC's or non-Kaiju Mustads) and you have to put one on with the hook weld facing you, and the other hook with the weld facing away, but not an issue with the lure specific "inline" trebles.....do you know what I mean bro?
Not hating, but the double split ring thing doesn't make sense to me. A fish mouth is horizontal, not vertical. So if a fish bites down on the lure like you mention and the metal goes sideways, the image I have in my mind is a fish with a lure in it's mouth with the flat parts of the lure touching the bottom and top lip which means the hook will either point to the roof of the mouth, or the tongue, not the sides of the mouth. I reckon in reality it doesn't affect hooking the fish in the corner of the mouth, but it does affect how much the lure can swivel around once the hook is in, which is probably a good thing. Another benefit could be the extra length can potentially help with bite offs with teeth further away from the leader.
Hey man can you do a video of an absolutely beginner outfit to start lure fishing in saltwater Also types of lures . Which rod , reel, lures. One that can be used off rocks/wharf/ beach. Thanks bro. Would be highly appreciated especially for new fishos like me. You vids a proper quality🔥🔥🔥🔥
Talk about a dab hand at split ring and lure upgrading, however I fish much lighter than you and some of my Bream lures come with like size 14 hooks, and with something like the Muss lure from Outback Breamer Baits, I reckon come with pretty good hooks, however I like to muck around with lures too. I find to open these split rings I insert a little hook point into the split ring at the opening and dick around and resist throwing the lure against the wall, these can be upgraded too. I doubt those pliers would open these, as I’ve used much smaller ones and still too big. Anyway…. Yew Briggsy, yr vids THE most clear and understandable online.😊
Hi Briggsy, Dave from NZ here. Topwater nut also. I have a question I only trust you to answer. When you replace trebles with inline singles, I am normally all good, but when I have a lure that has a swivel middle hook anchor point, can you still use singles? 'cos wouldn't it allow the hook rotate to a not good position? Like sideways or upside down? I realise there's no issue when the anchor point is just a fixed wire loop ('cos it holds the split ring/hook straight), so all my fixed loop anchor point lures I have put BKK singles on, but my lures with a swivel in the middle (like my FCL Phantoms) I have put BKK or Owner trebs on ('cos it doesn't matter if they rotate). What are your thoughts bro? cheers mate...oh also, have you ever used a double hook? also called "skippy" hooks. Owner make some awesome doubles (DH-41's) and you don't need to use a split ring for them, they fit on the loop/swivels on their own-they are great for rear hooks, and hook up better than a single, but don't munt the fish like trebs. You have to try em bro....

Have you tried a swivel between lure and hook for freedom of movement as well as reducing bind ?
I love these tutorials! I like the double split rings on the metals , gonna try it out
Thnx for the videos !
When you going out again with Cavy ?
Hi Mate, Cavy’s stuck over in Indo and has been for a few months now! And I’m at home in Aus
