What is Bunka?
It is a punch embroidery and what makes it so different from other forms of embroidery is that the stitches are not looped through the fabric. Instead they are punched into the fabric and held in place by the kink in the special rayon thread. The other major difference is the unique hollow tube needles that are used to punch the thread into the canvas. The thread is 4-ply rayon lily yarn that is only made in Japan. The canvas is a very tight polyester gabardine and must be tacked drum tight onto a wooden work frame.

Hello. Can anyone tell me why the stitches don't just pull through? As in it looks like it is making little loops on the back rather than something that will stay there like embroidery does.. ie in real embroidery, the back will look nearly the same as the front, thus holding the stitches, but on this little tool, it looks like those little loops would just pull through if you snagged even one loop???

It is the N-3 needles. A special needles to do Japanese Punch Embroidery.

It looks like the threads could be unravelled very easily. How do you ensure that the threads do not come undone? How can we wash the piece if it needs to be washed? This means that it cannot be used on wearables. Is this correct?

I've bought the tool and the thread but it keeps coming out every time I try. I know you don't knot it but please tell me how the heck do you secure the first stitch? I'm pulling my hair out here in frustration!!

Melissa McCrary make sure there's enough thread so you're not pulling it out. Or try holding the first stitch until you've stitched a few more stitches

I love what you can do with this Bunka but would it be fair to say that these stitches can unravel easily? Is that why you cannot wash these articles after being punch stitched?

I understand it is a good technique for a piece that is framed and displayed. But will this work (with long stiches, not the rug like work) stay on articles like pillow cases/cushion covers? Is there a way to secure it by working upon the loops on the other side of the fabric?

the thread is not colour fast so it is not used on cushions or pillow cases etc.

You don't have to lock it in. Once it is mounted and framed it stays in place. Some stitchers brush a little rice glue on the nubs on the back. This embroidery is not for clothing or quilts etc. it is only to stitch Bunka Fibre Art pictures.

the threads are not 'locked in'so they could unravel and they are not colour fast if they get wet.
Bunka is only meant for pictures on the wall.
