If anyone needs to give themselves permission to get a new sketchbook today, we recommend this video! Sketchbooks are many things- portable studio, tiny gallery, journal, well of inspiration, crash test facility for ideas, the artist's equivalent of a mad scientist's laboratory. Sandi makes such an important point, that if you're doing it right, not every page is going to be a masterpiece. We noticed the glassine interleaving between pages, too- smart way to keep pages from sticking or transferring!
Never be ashamed of your child-like artworks. There’s more original spontaneity in it than something that’s been polished towards “improvement.” If you must improve, remain spontaneous in your line and color and perspective. 😄
Two things I thought about: 1) I love how keeping a sketchbook can take me back to the moment I drew something so vividly when I look back on it. And 2) sometimes I think my early days venturing in art was braver. I was teaching myself. As I learned rules and techniques my stuff is tighter and not as fearless and fun. I’m working on letting go of some of those rules.
I wish I was as brave as you. I love to draw. I am not good at it but is one of those things that makes me feel happy, grounded and most importantly free to be myself. However not every time I fell into the beautiful flow of drawing. I often to scared to make mistake or to make something that won’t look good. I m so obsessed sometimes to make a beautiful sketch that I don’t even try to do it. I wish I was braver ( can I say that ? I am Italian lol )
I’ve been in a creative slump for several months, but this video just inspired me to get back to my art room and play. Love your art and enthusiasm, Sandy!
I came for the art haul and stayed for the personality. I have no idea about drawing or painting, I couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler, I'm more a photographer then an artist but your personality keeps bringing me back. I think I'm addicted to your cheeky smile.
I always learn so much from your videos….today I think I came away with how fearless you are in portraying your subjects, in the colour choices and in the type of media you use. It gives me a lot of encouragement 💕
I love your gestural drawings of your fugures. Thank you for showing us your sketch books. It is so true, what you say about, "If you don't like the sketch right now, you will like it later." The looser the better.
Y’all, just “get after it!” Probably the biggest lesson I got from this! I’m excited to see the growth, I’m working in my very first sketch book, I’ve always doodled on the sides of notebooks, but that’s about it. I’m trying to take art/drawing more seriously at this point in my life, so I really love seeing videos like these!
Sixty years ago in my college freshman art class, my professor kept telling me to loosen up. By the end of first semester all my drawings were looking so childlike.( Not in a good way.) Then he told me not to get so loose that I lost my way. In other words he was saying to not abandon my skill. Then he proceeded to do a detailed but effortless figure drawing. Which blew my mind! After that I could paint and draw realistic animals ( my preferred subject matter ) with spirit. All these years later I can switch from realistic to abstract & in between, always remembering the basics ,whether applying or not, to render my subject filled with life. This is what I love about you! You strive to give your work life spirit!
My weird body clock has done me a HUGE favor today by waking me up at nearly-3AM (Philippine time) to watch this! I'm wide awake, making tea, and enjoying the sketchbook flipthroughs. Also, LOVE LOVE LOVE your look in the opening of the video, Miss Sandi! The braid, earrings, and dress all look so lovely together. You are as pretty as a picture!
I feel like you have had a huge breakthrough lately with your art and you are really finding yourself and coming real close to everything you have been trying to achieve. I am really happy for you.
The page in the large Stillman and Burn book that has the ink drawings of the ladies is one of my favs and then some of the pages after that that had the kitchen things like the potholder and the tea kettles. ❤️❤️❤️💜💛💚🧡but then again I love it all! Lol
Oh, it was like a trip down memory lane seeing some of those early 2020 sketches! I started following along with you then and it’s so lovely to see your expansive collection of work up to now. Funny - I was at the art store this morning and I thought of you as I bought up a bunch of new acrylic inks and soft pastels! I’m really loving playing with mixed media in my sketchbooks - grateful for your inspiration! 🥰
I love how you explained that we will have bad work and good work. I have been known to tear pages from my sketchbook because I thought how hideous a sketch was. Now I wish I would have saved them. Yes you have made me want to explore and have fun while practicing to get better. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach and inspire us. 😊
That was fun! I enjoyed looking through your sketchbook with you. I also really love the one with the lady, the one you didn't paint the other hand, love her expression and the colors. I also loved the lady sitting on the sofa, it was so lovely. I want buy that one... LOL. On another note, that dress you were wearing looks great on you, its perfect with your skin tone, just beautiful. Thank you, this was just so much fun to watch.
Love your faces and figure work. Your growth from 2019 to 2022 is encouraging us to keep at our own work. Sometimes it is discouraging when we do not get the "perfect " piece and neglect to see how far we have come.
Gorgeous figurework, something I don't really do. The A4 sketchbook that I'm using right now is actually from my school A-level art course in 1992. I was flicking through it last year and realised it had a lot of empty pages in it so I'm using them now...that's a lot of progression!! Although I was surprised at some of my pencil shading work from back then, it was better than I remember being!
Yes It happens that is why it's important to keep ones former drawings or paintings , because it helps to measure the Progress and evaluate the then from the present Style and fluidity might even be recorded before more than it is in the present most times especially if one has spent years away from art practice.
I feel like I say this all the time... your videos are so incredibly relaxing and full of inspiration. I always look forward to watching your video while sketching each week. I loved seeing your progression with figures. Hope you have a great weekend and week ahead! 😊 💓
Your new videos are just so well done and your work is so inspiring! I had to step away for awhile (from most artists I follow) because I actually felt like it was stifling my own creativity a bit. We see so many images every day, especially if we follow other artists online, and I felt like I was losing my ability to come up with my own ideas and was too inclined to jump on every new style I saw and copy other artists I admired. I started in art long before social media (or the internet) existed, completed a whole degree in art in that era, and I think I was much more creative then. But, your videos are such a visual treat and I love seeing all the new supplies. (I just bought Unison pastels, arriving tomorrow….)
That is such a great idea to sketch your day. Thank you. I have been searching different free photo's to sketch. I spend more time searching for the right picture when I could just sketch my day. Love it.
I’ve been using my sketchbooks ever since I started watching your videos and it has transformed my art practice! Thanks for all the inspiration! And I’m LOVING your recent figures.
Fun video! You’re prolific. Love your birds, especially the large colorful bird that I think was in sketchbook #2. Your faces are fun. When you do your self portraits, you’re not generally smiling and your smile is charming! I wish I had your tenacity. And just one critique …. You don’t have to keep saying “ it’s just a quick sketch”. You’re not the only one who does that, but as followers of yours, we know when it’s a “quick sketch”…. Thank you, Sandi!
Those first few pages in the big sketch book reminds me of Lynda Barry’s composition book sketches and drawings. If you don’t know who that is, you must check out her books. Amazing stuff! Totally up your alley.
Your channel literally popped up on my feed out of the blue. I am so thankful for your talent and tips you are sharing. Your videos is a huge inspiration to me and at exactly the right time! I don't have enough hours in the day to catch up 😆💜
Loved your newer figure drawings. Can’t wait to see you do one on a bigger canvas. The bold colors you use in the faces a bring so much life to each one.
After seeing your video, I come back to my sketchbook of 2022. I was assuming my art and style didn't evolve at all (and was quite desperate about it) but then I take a look to what I did and I as so proud of me. I did evolve !! And what I saw was great !! I'm binge watching your videos since yesterday, they are so inspiring. Especially those who speaks about your sketchbook. Thank you for that.
Sandi I really enjoyed the flip through of the sketchbooks. All of your sketches are amazing. And wow the newest figures are excellent. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤
yep, practice practice practice! i keep telling younger artist how important this is 😀 art doesnt come easy, you need to make a mess in a few sketchbooks, or even canvass' to grow
Thank you Sandi for your great encouragement and sharing your sketch book creations. I received a couple of gift cards for my birthday and spent them on art supplies! I’ve been sketching, using a variety of mediums! I’ve been meaning to tell you this, I love your little singing moments and that little yeah at the end. Just wanted to say I appreciate your time and talent!
Practicing some figure drawing this weekend for sure. Picked up a bag of old photos (instant family) from a flea market and can’t wait to try out some of the crazy poses and hairstyles.
Love your passion and freedom of putting your art down in a book, on canvas - inspiring and so helpful in building my confidence to do the same. Thanks for sharing, love your work and growth ❤️
Sandi, I love everyone of your books here. Have to say, I adored the different faces that you drew, but was totally delighted with all your sketches in the very first book you showed! You took things, most of us don't even look at twice, to a whole new level ! Just loved this work. I'm always telling artist pals, be sure to date all of your work, regardless, if you like it or hate it! It tells your own personal story! Thanks Sandi for this great reminder !
I always love listening to your thoughts as you go thru a sketchbook. One thing I noticed and appreciated is that the personality of your trees is similar throughout your work.
Great to revisit your routes,I loved the work in your sketchbooks.I find it amazing how the stuff we put in our sketchbooks can change our course we are taking and pull us back to the unexpected. At the front of my Books I always write....DO NOT EXPECT TO SEE GREAT WORK IN HERE.😉
Yayyyy Sandi another great video, yep, I pulled out my sketchbook. I need to get over the fear of messing up my "nice" pages ha,ha... and just go for it, thanks again for the encouragement!!
Wow I just finished your video and your recent figures are AMAZING. I started keeping a sketchbook in my purse and beside my bed since January and i try to do something in it every day, even if it’s just a scribble. It has made me feel more confident when I work on a “real” painting. I noticed how you review your old work and try to pick out the things that are working and not working so I’ve been trying to do that too. It’s a great way to keep steering yourself in the right direction. Thank you for all the great videos.
Hey Sandi! I just stumbled upon your channel and loved your energy and love for art! It encourages me to start journal drawing again while also studying for my first year of massage school! Anatomy and medical terminology this past week have made me anxious, so sketching loosely to release that energy will be great! I loved seeing your two Trader Joe’s haul pages! I work at a TJ’s in Minnesota, and it was uplifting to see your progress and determination within your lines, colors, and portraits within your vibrant life! ❤ Cheers to growth with a cup of ginger turmeric tea! 🍵 🎨 📚
Iam so happy thar I came across your channel it has giving me hope that i can continue doing art I been so hard on myself because iam a bit of perfectionist, comparing myself with other artist
YAY!!! I'm so glad you gave us a tour of your recent figures. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. I've been doing some figures and portraits recently too. Do you have a place you recommend visiting for reference materials? I'm always looking for more quirky things and it's hard to come by. Thanks for sharing all of this with us Sandi!!
I love your work. I am going to have a try with loose portrait scenes on the weekend xo hurry up weekend!!! I want to try watercolour oil pastels and colour pencil mixed media. I haven't used oil pastels since school days. Thank you for sharing your art books xo
I love your latest figure paintings! It’s encouraging me to look back at how my figures might have changed over time. Thanks for the inspiration Sandi!💖
My Friday Favorite video time with you. I am so encouraged by seeing how you're not afraid to let go and try different 'things' to sketch and paint using different mediums. I appreciate that you say there's bad and good and to revisit how far we've come. You are inspiring and helping me get beyond my 'preciousness '. It's a learning and experimenting journey that should be fun. Thank you.
You are amazing Sandi! I alwAys run to my sketchbook after watching your videos. Your art practice is full of fun and freedom and it's really contagious! Thanks so much 🙏
I love your sketches, all the way from 2019 until today. I find it amazing how you can draw like a whole room just with a marker without doing mistakes... Are you drawing with pencil first? I have been working in my stillman and birn sketchbook today, they are my favourite. And thanks to you I have ordered a bunch of inks 😁🙈 Burnt sienna came today (my favourite color) and hopefully the rest will come next week. Thank you so much for another great video 🥰
Thank you so much Sandi for sharing your artist path and inspiring me (us) in each of your videos ! I'm definitely grabbing my sketchbook to draw faces :) 🥰❤❤

I love your latest figure paintings! It’s encouraging me to look back at how my figures might have changed over time. Thanks for the inspiration Sandi!💖
Thank you Jessica!
Thank you.
I’m so glad to hear that! Thank you!
I jumped and ran and got the sketchbook and will definitely start drawing in it tomorrow morning. Thanks for great inspiration!

❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, I just went back through some of my artwork dating back to 1994, and it's amazing how much I've grown, and have created over the years.
You are pushing me in a very good direction! You are a superb teacher!
Thank you 🥰🤗
I love your sketches, all the way from 2019 until today.
No, I don’t draw with pencil first - just jump in!
Thank you for this encouraging video. Surprised at your motion from tight to loose! :)
