E207-8 - Perfect Pat Hoberg Ejects Alex Verdugo & Cora Arguing a Slew of Correctly Called Pitches

- HP Umpire Pat Hoberg ejected Red Sox RF Alex Verdugo and manager Alex Cora. We look at every pitch Boston complained about that was mentioned, including calls to Verdugo, Adam Duvall, Justin Turner (x2), and Alex Bregman to see that Perfect Game Pat was, well, perfect. I love when Pat "RoboUmp" Hoberg works the dish. What a stud.
Pat is a real man juxtaposed with big cry babies who can’t hit hall of fame pitching. Doug Harvey received a complaint from a hitter on a called strike; his reply to the hitter was,” Hall of fame pitch.”
😂
"We work with numbers, THEY don't" great way to put it Linds
“Sometimes we agree with the box, sometimes we don’t.” Truer words were never spoken!
You’re going to argue balls and strikes with Pat Hoberg?
This is EXACTLY what I thought when I saw the ejection. I thought surely someone didn't....but yep...there are stupid people everywhere.
Pat is a fantastic umpire. Allows the appropriate amount of pushback. Gives fair warning. Is consistent between both teams.
"Give him time; he'll get better!"
"We don't want your opinion, Angel!"
Never argue with Pat! He's the man!
To be fair, Cora didn't really deflect responsibility. He was asked why the ejections happened, he explained it, said it was frustration... A lot of guys (and their unqualified broadcast teams) would be a lot more juvenile about it 😅
"Frustration...our players are man-babies and don't know how to not commit misconduct when things don't go their way. And so am I."
- Alex Cora, if he was foolish enough (wise enough??) to speak the unvarnished truth
Cora acted like a buffoon on the field.
"Alex, get out of here" is a confusing way to eject a player named Alex when the manager is named Alex.
Or an efficient way.
Lol
@@abigah fair :)
The point would have made it obvious to the dugout inhabitants. Up until the point that he lost his own marbles, Cora was a real Chad about it.
No one was confused.
A Cora: He's so consistent. A Horse's Azz as a player. Still a Horse's Azz as a manager. Thanks CCS for showing the world what every Red Sox fan knows.
He came up with my Dodgers and what he lacked in the batters box he made up for with his defense. He was a joy to watch with Cesar Itzuris, another guy with a weak stick.
And ANOTHER EJ based upon correct calls! This is habit forming!
What the Red Sox should be mad about is the terrible defense they have. They basically lost the game by themselves.
It doesn't matter how good sports officials are, people just can't help themselves.
This is why I'm not sure robo-umps will quell the tantrums these guys ate throwing. If they're still making this big a stink about it now with computers calling balls and strikes...
@@kawashi8307 RoboUmp won't fix the incessant whining..See also the minor league ejections for arguing balls & strikes from games that were 100% RoboUmp games
@@teebob21 I worked the Atlantic league first year they had ABS. Players and coaches hated it. They were relieved when it was dropped.
I think the night could have been summed up with the phrase "Fuck off, Alex"
"the pitcher" That's Justin Verlander. He's pretty good. So Cora needs to recognize that Verlander was filling up the zone and that being Verlander he might get a borderline call....if there would have been one.
Alex Cora: We know Pat is right, but we frustrated and we really hate losing. We can't help getting emotional.
Absurd. Makes them two time losers.
Emotional regulation is a life skill typically developed by toddlers between the ages of 2 and 4.
At 3:11 is Cora yelling at a fan???
Yep
Is it a great strategy to get thrown out for aggressively arguing close pitches with the best HP ump in the world? Probably not, but I think we can all agree that he got his money's worth ;)
cha-ching!
Great video, thanks!
Maybe the Red Sox should learn to protect the plate with 2 strikes? Those pitches were WAAAAAY too close to be taking with 2 strikes.
This is where my umpire pov comes in it is the most annoying thing in the world when you’re right but people still argue it’s like buddy the pitch is crossing at his eyes stop crying on the mound
It can get so old. I had a tournament game this year where I thought I was settled in and getting everything, and both catchers said they had no complaints when I asked if they thought I was squeezing or giving anything way off of the plate. But one of the managers was just pissed that his guys were window shopping and was taking it out on me, and about the 4th inning that spread to some of his players and spectators, and then turned into a sh*t show for me. I literally couldn't do anything right. It could be a straight fastball across the apex of the plate right at the middle of the batter's thighs with the catcher just sticking it, and from the dugout I'm hearing, "You haven't been calling that all day! How can you expect my guys to hit when they don't know what is where? You're killing us here!" The spectators were much less diplomatic about it. Games like that make me want to walk away.
@@XXelpollodiabloXX Players and fans will typically emulate the good or poor attitude of a coach.
@@XXelpollodiabloXX I know I’ve seen my teammates parents yelling you haven’t been calling that all day in frustration when the pitch was right down the middle don’t worry you’re doing great as in ump im sure what i do is just laugh at the parents when they’re clearly wrong the first few times but eventually I just wanna leave
@@XXelpollodiabloXX that being said if I’m like sh*t might’ve fudged that pitch I will let people talk to me a little bit because someone has got to keep me in place also this was my first year so I have more left in the tank then people who have worked 1000+ games
@@astersportsleague792 Even the best of us miss pitches. Move on, work harder, and do better....but never let it be an excuse for the Peanut Gallery to do or say anything that is not otherwise allowable
Really what Cora said what he doesn't agree with the service that is used to judge the umpires... which said the umpire had a hell of a game... not to mention the pitchers catching the edge of the strike zone. I suppose they deserve some of the credit. At some point MLB just needs to suspend a manager for making statements to the media that call the integrity of the game into question when the very system used to judge quality says you were wrong about all of them. Is no one in the entire Red Sox organization available to tell him before he makes a fool of himself? I'm sure if anyone the Red Sox org IS watching the numbers and complaining to the league when a plate ump has a terrible day.
They could only reasonably hold managers accountable for questioning the umps if they ever actually held umps accountable for screwing up. Also, it is sort of an old-timey part of the game, I do think they should get penalized for saying really awful things and spending more than a reasonable amount of time on the field after they get thrown out.
Until athletes and coaches become perfect, leave the referees alone. Unless it's Pat Hoberg, they are all flawed humans just like the rest of us (Pat's human, but he's pretty close to flawless, amirite?)
@@IsaacScharpYou're right, the umpires should be held accountable. I think in watching Alex Cora again, he did cop to what his player did... so no big deal there. Yeah the players were upset at the calls. And he did say "we didn't agree with the pitches" but it's not completely clear if he's saying that in the past tense. He could have used much more fiery language insisting they were right and getting screwed. I feel that the broadcasters had no business getting it wrong. I thought the "whatever the box means" comment from Cora looked like him searching for something to say if not downright a plain old dumb statement. If anything, I am certain that he got to see every one of those pitches before that post game question and he knew the umpire was on the money. He just didn't want to say "you know the umpire had a great night, just in the moment we thought there were off the plate. You know, that's just part of the game." Now, do I think he HAS to say that. No. And in retrospect, I'm going to give Alex a higher mark then many other managers who would continue to insist they were right. He tempered his attitude about it.
Let's also not forget the reporter asked him to comment on the ejections and possibly asked about the calls. We don't know that from these clips, but hey, that's what reporters do... they want to stir things up.
So in the end, I think Cora looked dumb for trying to brush off "the box" but also was far more muted than he could have been. I suspect he was already told, or even saw them himself. This probably doesn't reach that "awful things" standard. I'll concede that.
@@IsaacScharpUmpires are routinely reviewed by MLB. It's not even hard to Google this
@@TurnedToast LOL. I said held accountable, feel free to search that on google.
"In for a penny, in for a pound." Once Cora decided to argue balls and strikes, he needed to go Aaron Boone to get the point across and show his players. I did like his honesty afterwards
those pitches were all correct idk why Cora wanted to get himself tossed same with Verdugo
Cora was in a particularly grumpy mood all night. It was just a matter of time.
Cora does a good impression of a tea kettle heating up and reaching the boiling point.
208 ejections. 250 to 275 ejections is definitely within reach.
Who has 208?
@@jeffhembd9471 Alex Cora first it was Alex Verdugo
So, to be clear, people like Cora are making up stuff to argue about? I agree with the box: argue. I don't agree with the box: argue. I'm protecting my players: argue. Is this just another demonstration of that stupid saying "speaking my truth"?
Yes. It’s the same thing when a friend vents to you and you try to offer a solution, but they don’t want a solution. They “just want to be heard”. I stopped trying to understand people a long time ago. Life’s been good.
Is there a half-decent manager in the AL East?
I feel like Cora may have just been trying to fire up his squad
Wow.. 2 ejections all on correct calls. MLB needs to slow this down. As the Atlantic league showed when they went to roboump…. the arguing balls/strikes don’t go away, even though that guy you’re arguing with didnt’ call it either way…
There was even a minor league ejection this year with the full RoboUmp game. The Charlotte manager was ejected in a blow arguing balls and strikes.
Embarrassing, whiny, team with a consistently, wrong, head, coach. If Verdugo was an umpire he would be below Diaz, Bucknor, Hernandez level. He and his players have no business talking to Pat Hoberg except to say "yes, sir...good call blue."
As a fan of the Red Sox, Verdugo was a terrible pick up in the Betts trade. Dude is full of himself, and he's not even good.
Love the Red Sox and Fenway Park. Cora is shameful.
So the guy is accurate on the dish as if the roboump was working the game as well. So roboump is working this game and there are still problems from the dugout.
Bullshit? Mr. Pat Hoberg is not a robot. He’s a human with dignity.
Gotta put on a 'Good Show' so the fans will drink more $15 beer....=))
Yankees broadcasters in the recent Red Sox series were basically going against the Box. It didn't help the Yankees though 😂
On the last one he saw it in the vertical and that was enough to set him off
I’m not a fan of most umps, but pat is almost completely perfect and is the dude that to date has the only recorded MLB perfect game and he never seems like the kind of guy that wants to be the center of attention a la Joe West. It’s a shame we can’t clone 75 more of him to replace every ump. With this guy, there is no need for ABS
Time to say good bye to bloom
SWING the bat!!!! You get zillions of $$$$ to do that...not gripe about a pitch 1/2" out of the zone. I loved to watch Manny San Guillen . He hit SOOO many pitches that were out of the zone.
When the bat company based in Louisville Kentucky makes their product they have in mind the product will be used to hit baseballs. Impossible to hit a ball if you don’t swing.
Manager gets a fair shake, but also need to 'protect their players'? From what lol? Themselves?
They go to fight the umps because their players fight the umps and that fixes it somehow
Name another job where you get berated for doing your job perfectly 🤣
Or more appropriately, where tons of people AGREE with the person who berates you even though you did your job perfectly.
Consulting, and IT Security. Ask me how I know.
Literally anything to do with customer service
Security. If following the client's rules causes bad press for the client, you're toast. Ask the officer in Toledo OH who was arrested for enforcing the IRS policy that non-federal LEO had to be on official business to bring a weapon into the office.
Frustration sums it up. The Sox aren't playing very well.
I'll say it here, like I said it in a reply on the previous video. Until coaches win every game, until a player never commits an error, until pitchers stop hitting players... unless your game is perfect, sit down and shut up. Umps are flawed humans just like the rest of us, they do make mistakes, unless you are Pat Hoberg of course. If Pat's calling balls and strikes, they are balls, or strikes, you can also sit down and shut up. None if this is an excuse to argue, or throw a tantrum. That's reserved for kids, and baseball parents, of course.
My son's HS coach got real with his players. He said, "Baseball is a game of failures, and the ones that push past the failures succeds." Think about that. A .400 hitter is considered a superstar. While an umpire that has a .975 accuracy rating is the worst ever.
@@donh6416great post. Three things will happen in every baseball game. Players will make physical and mental errors. Coaches will make decisions that are errors. Umpires will make judgment errors . Baseball is like life- failure is a good thing because it’s how we learn and get better.
STOP WHINING ,SWING THE BAT
Do a video of the missed call in the rays game to walk off the game
Getting ejected by Pat Hoberg wouldn't look good on a resume.
Think more about frustration Sox offense isn’t hitting with risp and defense one of worse in mlb. What was more funny Pat had a brain fart at home plate on simple tag play he called him out when he was easily safe.
I feel so sorry for you guys having a winning record and being fourth in the division. That’s crazy and I’d surmise wildly frustrating.
First
Not a contest. lol
High and outside to Turner was not a strike.
According to the numbers it not even a buffer zone. Strike all day every day. Robo Pat got it right.
RoboUmp disagrees. It was a strike, all day long, and at every level of baseball.
So the numbers are wrong? Lol,
Apparently you don't know anything about the strike zone. Way to show your ignorance.
How could a hall of fame pitcher throw a great pitch? No way that’s going to happen.
