  • Have you ever thought about the story behind your favourite band? How did they create their sound, how did they become a world-wide sensation, how did it all start?
In 1994, three young teenage boys from Newcastle, Dan, Ben and Chris aged 14, entered a competition to record a song at the studios of the station Triple J. Little did they know, when Dan’s Mum filled out the entry form and sent it in, along with a cassette tape and a photo of them on a stoop of a house, that they would become world-wide sensations.
Today I am joined by Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou. They’ve just written and released their book, Love & Pain, which takes you on the journey of silverchair. Silverchair where more than just a band, they were a brotherhood. As they join me for a conversation, I learn about what really made them something special.

Dan is your brother. Don't ever give up on him. Even if it seems he's given up or given in, he needs you 2 more than anything.

I’m a Canadian, same age as the band. When Frogstomp hit, it was like this breath of fresh air, that made it ok to like music again after the implosion caused by Kurt’s death.
They were like a new puppy after you lost your old dog.
They developed into a band that would stay with me my entire life.
I, like all Silverchair fans, truly hope for a day where they are able to reunite and make music together again.

I always felt like Chris was one of the luckiest guys in music, to be able to play along to Daniel’s songs and be part of Silverchair. Like he was living the dream as a fan of his own band. Just having the good fortune to be in the same class as a prodigy. It’s no disrespect I’m sure he’d agree. The intro to Israel’s son is one of the best openings to any song / album of the era. Just badass. Love no association too.

I don’t think Daniel should be punished for branching out into other avenues and outgrown molds. Ben and Chris also went into a different direction doing the family life and running businesses. Daniel is a painter with music. he’s always been eccentric and Ben and Chris were more down to earth and chill. I believe Silverchair ended the party while they were still on top vs prolonging a band or artist like JLo having a midlife crisis or Madonna fully knowing they should retire gracefully or do something new with their fame. but silverchair created albums with richness and depth. they don’t make bands like this anymore at least in the US

These guys wrote music that no other band has ever come close to. To go from their initial style to molding that into the most melodic interesting music with these strange styles and sounds that you can't point your finger on for where they must have received the inspiration. To mold that with a kind of grungy, heavy yet also soft and incredibly emotional sound on both ends... man, there's just no comparison. There is not a band since that can come close. The only band I can even think of that ever managed to come close is possibly Incubus. It was mind blowing. You just think fuck... where did they get it from?

After reading the book and listening to the pod , I think the boys just want there friend back . But I think Dan is not in the same space as the boys are family men now and Dan seem to be bit of a mess from the interview he gave last year .. I hope they can be mate and if the Silverchair comes back great if not no worries .

Just finished the book, and I agree - it sounds like the boys just want their childhood mate back. After reading about Ben's psychotic episodes, and hearing Daniel say in an interview that Ben basically accused him of using his poor mental health to sell records, it is apparent that there has been a communication breakdown. It must have been devastating to have their friend insist on creative control of something they all created. It seems to me that it's Dan's ego that has destroyed Silverchair. The boys spoke sweetly about their mate in the book, I thought, despite their hurt. Enjoy your day mate

Enjoyed this interview! Thanks for the candour. I am hoping that you can recover the friendship with Dan - it is such a shame you are not enjoying life together, after all you’ve been through together.

The thing about Freddie Mercury is funny because I love a ton of Dan's solo songs. I think FutureNever is some of the best music he's created.

Dan has too much of an ego and is dramatic - I get he went through a lot, but it was an amazing a lot. The experiences he got in his life were unreal. Sounds like Dan has such a big ego but also dislikes himself and ruined it for the others.
I dated a famous musician just before he got famous and then watched him get famous until he dumped me because he was a "rockstar" now..he gave me the same vibes as Daniel. Huge ego and thought he was better than others but also disliked himself and needed the attention as a booster.

There's a huge blindspot here. Just doesn't feel authentic because of the underlying bitterness that is obvious. There's not going to be any friendship repair with this out in the ether. There's just no recognition of the obvious truth here.

Of course he is. I like Ben and Chris, i think they are nice guys, very talented, but Daniel is on another level. And he had the charisma , the looks, the little ' extra' that made silverchair what it was.

You 2 should start a new band with a new singer. Clearly Daniel is the issue! Go back to making music more like your first 2 albums bros! Especially the 1st album, didn't realize the political message until recently

Hmm not sure Daniel John’s is “ the Problem” something to consider is Daniel John’s has more talent on his left Nut than these two blokes… Ben’s has a chip on his shoulder because he knows it…
The fact Daniel’s gone on to more success without them proves it… Ben’s talented but he isn’t Daniel ..
It’s so obvious they are using Daniel’s fame to promote the book…
