Hey everyone thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on the two images. It is super cool to see your perspectives. Its quite an even split on people who enjoy the moody image vs the sun image. I think I will try to go back and process the images a bit more and include both on my site. :) If you enjoyed the video make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven't, thanks again!
I love the softness of this stream in the foreground of the darker image, but also the warm light in the midground catches me. Well, it's hard to say, but if I had to choose one, maybe I'd also go for the dark, moody one...
Love the darker one.
Oof, yeah the rapid changing weather on the Faroes is something else. Especially out and exposed. Gives you a renewed respect for nature, for sure.
I like the light on the land around 12:13 the best.
The dramatic photo I feel is better. The foreground pops more and the stream leads your eyes to the island in the back.
Really loved this vlog Michael. That clip of the glowing waterfall defying gravity was hypnotic. This is making me excited to back in Spring.
Thanks for sharing, think I like the overcast photo best. But both shots are really nice. 👏👏👏
Thanks so much for watching! I am probably being a bit to hard on myself about the sunny version.
@@MichaelShainblum I really like both for different reasons, but like you said where the light was hitting was not optimal. Still, so good...
For me I love the one with the light. Fantastic image.
Thanks Joseph!
Very nice video Michael. So much Faroese ;) It reminded of the Raw files sleeping on my hard drive made exactly in the spot you were ;) I think will work on them this weekend :)
I also love the dramatic version of the scene! Great video Michael! Thanks for sharing!
9:06 need to stop the video to leave a comment. I did that crazy steep hike on the grass in Kalsoy... and I can totally confirm it's ridiculously steep haha! and from there we kept hiking towards the lighthouse by crossing the grass.. my ankles were hurting. I can keep watching, cheers :D
Its a fun one, but definitely super steep!
8.00 - the right one. Makes me think grass is better in overcast light unless backlit. KInda not surprising. Warm and cool cancelling each other out
Very nice Michael. Looks like a great trip regardless of the weather. I don't mind the lighting on the second image at all. I like them both. Also, I really appreciate your candid and relaxed presentation in your vlogs. Beautiful imagery also. Thank you.
This is the first video of yours I've watched. I'll be back for more. I really like the way you go through your thinking and processes before, during, and after capture.
if can say, my thought would be that the non sunlight version has a more serene and quiet tone. while on the sunlight version, if you cropped the bottom a bit, the clutter would go away and the eye would be drawn to the mountain at the back, enhancing the image with the colourful splendor, creating a vibrant and dynamic scenery
I like the more lightning image the most
For me a blend with the dark forground and a mid sunny would work, also i think the sky in the not sunny one is nicer.... nice vlog!
Amazing stuff mate I am going in April cant wait.
Fantastic! L love your time lapse. I agree with you about the 2 images of the island, the light on the md-ground is distracting from the overall scene. Great image! Cheers.
I liked the brighter shot a bit more.
Mainly because of the frozen look of the water.
Outstanding, Michael... I am a fan
Awesome vlog Michael, cant wait for my first trip in April, i liked the first moody image of the waterfall because of the detail in the distant islands but preferred it with the shorted exposure water👍
I just love these series of videos!
can't wait for the next one.
Thanks so much man!
Another informative and enjoyable clip. Of the two images, I preferred the darker/first/right-hand/moody one because the camera was located just a little higher so that the road in the distance carried on the task of leading the eye through the picture towards the island. I'd love to visit the Islands - not so much as I'd like to see Iceland, though - it looks to be a spectacular location. But I wouldn't have the heart to go during the time they harvest the pilot wales (if they still do that).
I like the one on the right, the drama is wonderful!
Thanks Sandy! :)
As always, you are the legend !
You keep stepping up your game. Really beautiful poetic shots and videography. You deserve more views :)
Incredible and inspiring. It amazes me how chill and upbeat you are with all the challenges and unpredictability. Not only are you capturing incredible stills, video and timelapse, you're also vlogging at the same time. I wish I had your patience and willpower!
Shane, I prefer the second shot with the lighting. It adds more depth to the photo. The only thing I might consider in the edit is lightening up the clouds in the top of the frame a little to balance things.
Love the moody days! I appreciate the fact that you have to be more creative, instead of just relying on epic lighting from the sun. Love the video 🤙🏼
Lol. STOP RAINING! That’s how I felt most the time in the South Island in NZ haha. Either that or it was bright sunshine 😆🙄
Hahaha same here, NZ has some crazy weather!
Also like the moody image better. On the second, I would have liked to see more polarization on the FG to make the rocks a bit darker, This could have simplified the scene I guess
Beautiful image at 4:35, and I agree I do like it more than the second version if it with sunlight.
Hi Michael, virtual hugs from Indian UA-camr. Your photography and videography reminds me of Thomas Heaton, a British nature photographer.
What a place :) I think the 2nd photo for me but I can see what you mean about it being more complicated. But it has more presence for me. Loved the timelapse at 6.10
Thanks so much Steve!
I love the 1st image with dramatic moody clouds. I've been learning from your photos and videos how to see a good image right out of anywhere. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great video. I think that the visual flow in the image with more light is better than the overcast one, it is more pleasant to look at it. Cheer from Chile.
I like the one with the light more. Drama is nice, but light makes it. And this landscape with the clouds is enough drama. But i would prefer a slicely longer exposure for the water in the foreground. But anyway, you did a great job!
I love the light in the midground and how it contrasts with the dark clouds in the back (I'm a sucker for that kind of lighting), but I do agree on the extra light on the waterfall being messy. It just wasn't a long enough exposure to smooth out the water
I like the your first shoot . The sun in the second shot really takes away from the drama. Time laps were killer.✋
That was a nice episode. I could really feel you. Live in Norway we have very similar weather conditions. Looking forward to the next episode. 😊
Hey thanks so much, I really need to come visit Norway!
Norway is a good place for a landscape photographer
Great video, I definitely agree with you about preferring the image without the light. I think the light in the mid ground takes your attention away from the waterfall and the island in the background.
As a novice into landscape photography, thank you so much for sharing that insight into why you didn't prefer the 2nd image due to messy lighting. I would've never seen it that way and deciphered it like that. :)
It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one getting those "shots" like 5-10% of the time LOL.
Thanks for sharing. Love your videos man, always inspiring me to keep pushing and moving forward.
Thank you for the video, really like your way of thinking and interacting on your video. They both have their pros and cons, but to me the image with the LIGHT in the middle ground is far more interesting. It is primarily because the light is only on the right mountain bluff, leaving the left mountain bluff in shadow, giving the impression of time and motion, light and dark,. Far more interesting than if the scene were entirely dark (the first image), or entirely light. Keep up the good work!
The second one for me, love the mood!
Michael,
The first valley-to-sea image has more brood, and presents cleaner visual design. All that said, I would prefer to visually navigate the interesting layers of the second (with sunlight) shot, IF the foreground rock in the stream didn't conjure a childhood scare involving a "Creepy" comic. (My prob, not your prob!)
Thank-You,
Mike
I like the 2nd image with the mid-ground light. I think it pulls your eye into the image whereas I find myself drawn to the water of the foreground in the first. The first one might make for a real nice moody B&W image IMO. Love the video and the killer time lapses. Thanks for including the settings btw as I find it really helpful for learning a good starting point in my humble attempts at time lapse photography. Well done Michael. Awesome locations don’t always mean awesome images but that doesn’t make them any less awesome. Truly other-worldly.
Very nice time lapses. Sure helps to have amazing scenery and weather, too!
Thanks!
I personally like the second photo with more light. To me the color on the grass helps lead the eye to the island in the background. I tend to gravitate to photos with more color.
Great work as always bro!
Incredible 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤙
Bad weather is part of these northern areas. Just fun to watch other people struggling with rain, I feel less alone 😂😂😂
Agree with your thoughts about the first picture. The sunlight adds distraction. Would have been awsome to get it on the island in the background.
Great video btw 👍
I like the lighter one (on the left) much more because of its colors (comparatively vivid green)
I can understand that, I usually gravitate towards colorful imagery as well. Thanks for watching! :)
Hey just found your channel via a mention from Adam Gibbs. Loved this comparison of the 2 days, same comp. I would probably have been seduced by the 2nd day’s light and chosen that were they my images, but looking st them objectively I totally agree that the first is cleaner and more cohesive without the midground light. Great call. (Of course you could always cheat and take some of the 2nd-day light for the background of the 1st-day image, I’d be curious about that.) but all in all I think you made the right call. Great lesson.
The image with the light !
Hi Michael. As for the two images you posted I do prefer the mores opposed to the one with the light in the near foreground. Would have loved to see one where the light is only casting over the mid ground or the background. I feel when it's casting over the foreground and mid ground there isn't enough separation and lt loses a little depth? Not sure if you agree? Lovely work either way
I agree with you about preferring the long exposure. The lit sections in the other image kinda "block" my viewing the BG and, while stunning and beautiful, distract from the cohesion of the image as a whole.
Thanks so much for what you do! I love your creative process. Pls keep em coming.
Beautiful video, Michael. I prefer the picture with more sun. Maybe I would darken the foreground a little more to make it less dominant.
Regards, Dirk.
Dang you are getting good at this!
Second image works best for me, awesome video Michael thanks for sharing.
Thanks John!
Beautiful mate! I love Faroe islands even though I've never been there
Of the two images that are in question...I prefer the second one. Although it has to do more with the foreground than the light per se.
that sentiment about not always getting the best light every time hit home. my photo location today had a great sunrise but not far enough from the horizon to make the shot work. I thought "what would Michael shainblum do?" and ended up finding some cool texture and patterns in the sand that was more interesting than the sunrise. so thanks for opening more possibilities with your advice.
Hahaha that is awesome! I would love to see what you got!
Amazing long exposure timelapse in the middle of it all. This place is definately on my bucket list. Image with more light is my favourite although the sky, sea and distant island in the image which is darker is better. Perhaps you could blend in Photoshop to come up with the best composition?
Thanks so much Chris. Unfortunately just for my own personal work, I do not blend images taken from different days. But I will be working a bit more with the images from day 2 (lighter) when I finalize the images for my site.
Michael, Enjoyed this very much! Both images nice but I really like the more dramatic first image a lot. The look, feel and mood really work for me. Cheers!
Hi Michael, I really liked the pictures. I prefer the first one. It conveys a better message. Can you explain why you used f16 on the second picture and where did you focus? Thank you. Best regards
I like the more brightly lit image. I think I would really like it more if the exposure had been longer to smooth out the falls and fjord.
The first image works best for me. On the 2nd one my eye doesn’t get past the middle ground.
What a trip! Everyone's been waiting and we all thought you disappeared!
The image (Island framed by Hills) with more lighting is much more visually appealing. I would have probalby taken the darker image in Lightroom and used the Brush tool to lighten the hills anyway.
I love this place..masha Allah
I wish i can be there!❤
I prefer the first image you took with the darker mid ground.....very moody. Well done Michael 👍
Thanks Stephen, glad you enjoy it! :)
Amazing video, definetly on my bucket list now! Would love to know where you get the music for your videos, they work perfectly?
The more dramatic image is my favorite.
Thanks Kent!
On the fence. I like second image and how the light interacts with the fore and mid ground but it feels incomplete. The first is more complete but doesn't grab me as much
Thanks for your thoughts on it Sean! :)
@@MichaelShainblum I prefer the second image as well due to the light but IMHO the foreground stream/waterfall is distracting in both. You were pushing too much into the shot.
I am not a fan of candy floss water but I like the tonalities in the first one. Water in the second shot is much better at ⅓ sec.
I actually preferred the lighter image but both have plenty of drama. Spectacular timelapse!
I like both 🙂
Thanks Al!
Dramatic lighting for sure.
Awe yeah a new Shainblum vid! And right before I head out for a photog session! Cheers for the inspiration Michael! You are one of the reasons I started my own channel, cheers!
WOW on that scene from the next episode! Looking forward to that.
@@PaulFaracePhotography Hey thanks so much Paul! :D
Loving these videos Michael! Always an inspiration. See you in New Zealand soon.
Thanks so much Regan!
Also if I had to pick one photo, its the second one. The light breaking through gives me a sense of power and the sun is pushing its way through those dark clouds and the colorful landscape reveals itself.
I think I like the second image better.. maybe because there was a bit more light. However, I did like the water flow in the first image much better. great images and love the timelapse
Thanks Jesse! Really glad you enjoyed it!
So having seen the second image, the first feels quite flat. Though I want the second image to draw me into the picture and it doesn't quite do that. You're right - if the light had fallen on the distant island then it would draw the viewer further into the picture and that would work better in my opinion.
Both are excellent, but I prefer the one with the light....
As a colour picture I prefer the second one, b & w for the first one?
Nine times out of ten for me, the 10 stop makes great moody images on a stormy day and end up the keeper, the Long exposure pulls me in more and has a great mood. But, maybe an exposure blend with the long exposure, to bring in some of the dappled light (on the land only) from the first image...?
Reading comments below, these were shot on different days, I would not blend them if that is the case. If they were shot around the same day/time, probably would work...
How about a blend of those two photos? The water of the simple image, the midgroundwith the light and than the background of simple image?
I think the differences in tonality would be a bit of a problem. But I also just for myself personally would not blend images from multiple days together. I do not have any problem if other photographers want to do that for their own work. But its just not something I would do for my own.
@@MichaelShainblum fair point. I think that when you blend only the highlight in, the image will be really popping!
Anyway, if I have to pick one, I would take the first, because of the foreground
@@EvilNeedle90 I think I might have an even longer exposure from day two I can play with, maybe that one will end up being the final image for my site.
@@MichaelShainblum would like to see that one as well!
Hello Michael, I prefer the second longer exposure as the movement and the shapes of the water is better. On the left-hand side top of the Rule of Thirds, there is a little island connected to the mainland. For me, I would have liked you to have stepped a pace to the right and create separation between these objects. Stunning location and scene however....
What you are purposing would not work compositionally. Sure you would get separation of that tiny island, but at the cost of completely losing any interest in this photo. You would lose the stream, which is a main element in the image and just be shooting a patch of grass, you would also loose the symmetry in this composition. I am all for as much simplification in a photo as possible, but you really have to pick and choose your battles when it comes to composition. Compromises need to be made sometimes, in order to get the shot. Sometimes fixing one minor element, creates a whole set of bigger problems.
@@MichaelShainblum It would be the same composition with the exception of moving half-a-pace to the right. Once you see that little island touching the side of the hill, I can not take my eyes off it. It would be a simple and minor movement to correct this...
I prefer the moody no light image. You made LMAO about the rain.
Both the pictures are aqually nice, actually what matters is " how much you enjoyed and experience you learned from".
Any tips on how to get details in a totaly gray/flat sky?
I also prefer the second image.
I prefer the overcast without the light.
Thanks Chris!
Better late than never : first of all, that last timelapse was also my favorite part of the video, a lot going on between the rain going towards us and the clouds playing with the top of that mountain. I really am becoming more and more passionnate about timelapse, I feel like it can communicate sometimes better than a photograph the spirit of a place. Specially the weather of the Faroes. (Can I ask you what you used at the waterfall for that jib timelapse ?)
About the two images : the first one feels a little bit too edited to my taste, mostly because of the color cast. I prefer the natural tones of the second one. I think what would have been best is no sun on the waterfall and just spots of sun like you had on the middle ground. But you can't have it all :)
Amazing production as usual! Thank you Michael. Waiting for the ep.3🖤
Would you mind sharing the source of your music tracks/audio..
Hey there Ram, I get most of my music from MusicBed I also got one of the tracks from soundstripe. Thanks so much!
i like the light in the green land, but dislike the darkness sky, so i think in a blending
More lighting - and it's not even close ;)
Been to those locations also, I live here.
When were you here in the Faroes?
Hey there! It was back in September.
More lighting is better at 8:06.
